For women its different. A "sexy" female, is one that is cute, slender, and curvy so the media shows that. The only difference is, as with almost everything else in life, the average male doesnt cause any drama or try to victimize themself over b/s that doesnt even make sense. Guys dont cry in a couch eating a gallon of ice cream just because the media creates this perfect male image of a ripped rich smooth talking guy while they are broke and can barely even climb the stairs to their 3rd story efficieny.

P.S: Thats a guy from Frogster saying that, from germany no less. They dont have the same hypocritical reservations about sex as Americans.
Despite how I phrased it my argument was not specifically towards the hyper-sexualisation of women, but towards using sex to sell games in general. In retrospect I also should have posted this in the General board instead, because my gripe wasn't just with Tera but with the entire industry.
J0K3R_3D, you make a good point that men react differently to idealised portrayals of men than women do, but to say that men aren't affected by media images of the "perfect man" is wrong (not that you did say exactly that).
Personally I'd like to see a game with a less idealised portrayal of people, but perhaps that's just me, and perhaps a product like that wouldn't sell.
Also, it's relevant and worth noting that Bioware have decided to allow players to create fat male characters, but not fat female characters. I'm not implying that this is necessarily a sexist decision, but it is interesting.
P.S. I noticed the guy was German and was confused by it. Thanks for explaining.
Anyway, people seem to be misinterpreting me here. Personally I find this kind of thing to be crass, but not bad enough that I will stop playing a game. I'm also concerned not just with TERA but with the gaming industry as a whole, in which this kind of design is all too common. My point is that it alienates a whole potential audience, and is holding back the medium from being taken seriously by the wider society. Sure, this is a problem with society as well - people need to be more open-minded and less easily outraged, but we're not exactly helping with this sort of thing. Did anyone actually watch that video I posted? I'll post it again just to be sure.
Hmmm. You're really pushing for folks to watch that video, but fail to bother with its comments?
The most liked comment says: "I'm a woman that plays video games and I don't mind the rampant objectification in gaming. It's distracting, but I don't actually mind the half-naked women.
The problem I have with gaming is the male demographic. Even the nerds act like a lot of whining, sexist, hostile frat boys. I keep my mic turned off because I get sick of getting hit on or getting the racist and sexist commentary.? If male gamers want to see more women, they need to do some growing up."
I think that pretty much sums up a lot of the females I've played with through the years. Some of them, of course, love the attention and use it to their advantage, but that's another thing altogether...
Point is, if you really watched the video yourself, you'd note the main point the guy hit on, which is that it's not even so much the objectification of women, but that gaming itself looks like a boy's club from the outside, at least from the female perspective. When you read that comment above, well... I'm sure most of us know exactly what she means. Who hasn't wanted to slam their face to their desk while listening to some douche in vent try hitting on something with a female voice the second they join? It's emberassing, and that's just the tip of the iceberg.
At any rate, I'm like a lot of the other replies here; I'm more bothered that the run animation itself looks like shit. Forget that it shows her rear.

You mistake my meaning, and this is a problem I see in general with people's perceptions of such things. Let me try to clarify.
I love the Asian style of art in general, and I love anime. Andin fact, most of the women in anime are strikingly attractive and usually wear short skirts. In fact, I enjoy wearing short skirts myself, as I said before. That is not at issue. I like the men carrying massive weapons, and from what I have seen, I like the combat style.
What I do not like is the way this character runs in an unbelievable manner *just* so we can see her panties. That's it. They call her the "naked chick" and they tout this as a feature. The entire point here is to show off the woman sexually. There is no other reason behind this design decision. And that is where my problem comes in. This decision was made to attract horny adolescent boys that have never seen lady parts in real life, and disregards how women, or, I hope, more understand men would feel about this. The real problem here has nothing to do with the girl in the game world, but in the decision-making process in the real world that led this to happen. It is incredibly misogynistic and defies a generation of progress for women's rights.
And more than that, that I hear you say to "grow up" with regards to this issue, I have to explain that to do this, and to like this, is incredibly immature, and shows baser desires and baser ideas of what is attractive (to clarify, panties =/ sexy. there are many more ways to make these women sexually appealing, and many animes currently do this without needing to always show underwear.)
And I can tell you, for myself, and for my girlfriends, if we see a manboy playing a game like this, or we see those posters of models on your walls, that is a strong and immediate turn off. This is not because of the woman, but because of the immaturity of the man to display it in that way. I would be willing to wager large money on the idea that most of you boys saying this is okay do not have frequent sexual contact with women in the real world. (Don't bother arguing with me on this point, we will get nowhere, you won't change my mind, and you know yourself whether this is true.)
TLDR:
It is not the art that upsets people in this case, at least me. It is the fact that the men who did this in the real world thought it was okay to make a woman run in a way no one would in order to show off the panties, and that there are people in the gaming community that think it is okay.
"It's a game" is not an okay response. This is not about the game, this is about men designing this game and believing that it is okay to do this.

I'm with you 100% on this one, it's both a ridiculous look for a running animation and harks back to some archaic notion that it's OK to portray women as nothing more than sex objects for the male gaze, stupid move on the developers part.

Why do you do this? I'm not sure if you realise that but do you understand that this is a prime example of a troll, not a hater, a troll.
Besides, talk me about sexual contact! A woman that lurks gaming forums and makes troll comments must have a very serious and sexual life.
On a serious note: I just see this whole "art style" thing humorous at best.
This is absolutely not hot, sexy or anything alike.. its just cheap. Nothing against beautiful girls in mmorpgs but this running animation doesnt turn me on at all. And what makes it even worse is that even female heavy tanks look like hookers in Tera. That is just ridicolous. I really dont have problems with female characters displaying skin but not if they are wearing an armor which is supposed to protect them. It feels ridicolous then.
I gonna link to a picture of gw2 female characters just to clarify what I mean:
No.5 is totally haaawt and No.2 is short before ridicolous and the most I can accept for heavy armored female chars. The char in the centre is what I want my female warriors to look like

I agree. I am a grown mature woman and I play female chars. I saw the same thing in Lineage 2 and said "Ok, that is so ridiculous ... let's skip this". That stupid hentai anime "Yay I can see her pants when she bends down" is making the developers deciding to do this look ... childish and laughable.
And watch that ridiculous hip swaying when she does her spell. Are you kidding me? Can I have a grown-up version instead of this prepubertarian giddy thing?

Again, assuming she is insecure because she finds this offensive. That is part of the problem.
Paterah: I am not saying all men who game are like that, but the ones that gravitate to that sort of sexist objectification of women are. I am not sure why saying that is the mark of a troll, because it has been proved out time and again both with professional studies and my own experience. The most striking example so far are the people in AOC. Revolting. Which is a shame, because I love Conan.
I am not trolling, or at least not trying to. I am trying to educate young men on this idea. My mother and her mother worked hard to move society away from this. Look at those GW2 characters. Women can be gorgeous without being ONLY sex objects. I can be a sex object. Sometimes that is what I go for, but I do not run around TRYING to show people my undergarments. That is uncouth.
As for my sexual contact, you are assuming a woman that games does not have a sex life? That is a pretty broad generalisation, do you not agree? That would be if I had said all men who game are like this subset that want to see the panties. I am not going to go out of my way to prove this out for you, and I doubt you will believe me anyway, with this attitude, but I know it for truth and I think it you can accept it, it will help you. I am an attractive twenty-something. I am not a supermodel, but if I went to a disco, I could leave with a handsome man. Not least because I am a good dancer as well as a good PvPer.
Finally, this is not art style. I love the asian art style, and I do not mind their tall, thin female characters who wear short skirts. I am tall and thin and I wear short skirts. But I do not let everyone see my business, you understand. I can be attractive without showing off all the goods. It is something called decorum. I do not need to log in and see a ridiculous man (of course, this is much more rare, because men are usually the ones designing things) in a banana hammock. I get my sexual gratification in the real world, and therefore I have no need for pixels.
If you want this sort of thing, they make porn for it. Some of it is pretty good. It does not need to be in the game where it breaks my immersion by its misogyny and pure ridiculousness.

It is a game and there is nothing wrong with this design. Point. You are the only one that see the problem here, not all cares or have the same vision about these "movements". I see you aren't gonna to play this game aniway but find a better argoument to QQ about because this one about pixels is pretty ridiculous and redundant. Also about "adolescents who like the skirt" or "if i like the game i'm a boy without a life" are you serious? Lol, you are the first one that have a dirty mind if you think so. You know nothing, never, if you think that pixel in a videogame have an influence in the real world you are the first one with serious problem in real life. This is the most stupid and pathetic thing i read in a forum.
So again give us a favour, if you are so bothered move to another game and stop this nonsense.

WTF? No subscription fee?
I'm with you 100% on this one, it's both a ridiculous look for a running animation and harks back to some archaic notion that it's OK to portray women as nothing more than sex objects for the male gaze, stupid move on the developers part.
warhammer had worse on some female char.
by worse i mean running even more bent over and without the skirt.
If you don't like it, don't play it. Or play it, and choose a mail character.
Or, you could whine and cry and attack anyone who plays the game.
The char in the centre is what I want my female warriors to look like
Congratulations, that is called difference between western art and eastern art, want a cookie?
Played: Pretty much any fantasy MMO, some did not even make it to release ...
Favorites: UO, EQ2, Vanguard, Wurm Online, Salem, ESO, Creativerse
Playing: ESO, Creativerse, Guild Wars 2
Anticipating: (sigh) ... maybe Ashes of Creation
I agree with you on this. It definitely doesn't look good to typical insecure women.
