I'd like to support the original poster here, but personally I think he started off on the wrong foot by saying that the game is really all that flawed. I know he was trying to meet the haters halfway, but wen you meet somebody who's wrong halfway you end up half-wrong, and throughout the thread they're pouncing on his attempts at accomodation as vindication at last.
In the wider scheme of things, I've played MMORPGs that were far crashier and laggier at release. This one is quite playable, its main trouble seems to be that it tests the patience of the impatient... which, in some ways, is a good thing if you don't want to be stuck playing the game with a bunch of impatient spazzes.
And, yes, there's a lot of content missing, but that's actually working-as-intended, they were always planning on unfolding the content slowly as the game grew into it, so as to give those systems more attention than rushing them to release.

The insulting from the fans just gets worse and worse.

First I want to admit I haven't played this game so I don't know anything first hand.
Second, I will say that as far as these forums go, I don't know that I have seen such a large scale negative opinion of a game upon release since STO came out.
Every forumn is negative here. The game is fantastoic a breath of fresh air (or old air).

That's odd, as weren't you claiming not that long ago they were simply holding back on content, and that it would appear in a miracle patch for launch? It seems like a constant moving target, each time something turns out to be complete bull.
Why on earth should people put up with a game with next to no content? They haven't exactly been rushing either, its been in development for several years. The real question is what the hell have they been doing during that period, as there sure isn't several years worth of work.

What a community.
Community is great, we just don't like you.
Kind of highlights the community isn't great. Try being constuctive instead of insulting people. Although that does seem to be all the defenders have as ammo in any discussion.
I was guilty of over estimating SE in the past, but after FFVIII I lost interest in the FF series, it started to lose the appeal for me. I wanted to like FFXIV because it sounded like it could be a fresh change of MMO pace and I was looking for an immersive new MMo experience, but I again over estimated SE and was very disappointed. I have never been so bored by a MMO in a long time; I found it neither refreshing, immersive or fun. And nothing about the gameworld makes it feel llving or breathing.
It's good to see people defending the game they like even if they are constantly referred to as fanbois by those that are referred to as trolls by others. Unfortunately, given the games coming out in the next year or so in the MMO/multiplayer genre FFXIV will have to maintain a strong core subscription base to avoid going f2p. Hopefully, for the game's sake, the fallout after the free month is up will not be too bad.
If SE devs really referred to this game as a game with "mass appeal for the casual gaming audience" (referencing post 27 by vmoped) then they either flat out lied or are very confused as to the nature of the game in relation to their...'target audience(?)'.

Fair enough. However, what else would an impatient spazz call a thing, if not tedious and boring?
The thing is, whenever you buy a means of entertainment, you have a certain expectation to be entertained. That's fine, but only up to a certain point. If you've bought opera tickets and are attending, only to start throwing bottles into the orchestra pit during the second movement shouting, "WTF?! I don't like this old crap, play some goddamned speed metal!" then it's not the fault of the entertainment medium, it's rather because you've blundered into a form of it which was never intended for the likes of you, and the rest of the opera goers will be breathing a sigh of relief when you finally storm out of the place.

No, what actually was going on was that:
The developers were always telling us that they were holding back content for post-release.
We had indications (a tech support email, the system requirements) that indicated the release client was going to be nearly three times the size of the beta client - this turned out to be a misunderstanding, the size referred to was including the installation size and potential downloads.
So we thought it was going to happen earlier rather than later... but it turns out we're still sitting here on holding back content for post-releaes.
There's evidence throughout the game that there's a great many placeholders for things to come.

If i say i don't like you and you feel insulted then you really need to step out and breathe some fresh air. Seriously no kidding do it now.
Just because they made some games-on-rails that we enjoyed playing back in the 90's does not mean that they are making anything great today. As a matter of fact, if you take a closer look at gamer history you will see that the console games were good mostly because it was slim pickings.
We are past the "estimation" period. We have seen the game and the truth is out.
Square is good at making console-style games.
Most of us prefer PC-style games. You know, keyboard/mouse, lots of chat and hotkeys, etc.
Ratings continue to drop with this game. The public has spoken.
Just wait for the ps3 version and you will get a polished game. Then again, Guild Wars 2 and The Old Republic are coming so it probably will not even matterif they fix the game or not.
Well after after about 3 month of the SW launch people will get tired of their massive online single player game. By that time FFXIV will be rolling pretty good.
As for GW2 a person could play ffxiv and gw2 if they wanted to, one has a sub and one doesnt.
FFXIV wont be a wow, population wise, but after 2+ years I have no doubt in my mind that it will have more of an active population than GW2 and SWtor.

I have zero doubt they will add things, and the game will improve. However, they should have waited until the game was actually in a fit state to release. All they've managed to do is alienate a high percentage of players that were genuinely interested in the game.
It may be a sign of the times, but first impressions matter a great deal. People lose faith, and just don't look back.

I'm under the opinion that they did wait until the game was fit for release, and the players they've alienated are mostly those who wouldn't have liked the rest of the game anyway.
Of course, "completion" in an MMORPG is a subjective thing, but I draw the line at, "fully playable, servers up the majority of the time, there's enough content to keep the player's occupied, client doesn't crash all that often, client can be used to the expectaitons of the intended audience" FFXIV met these conditions.
I think Square is being overestimated... not the other way around.
I wanted to like FFXIV, but there are so many inconvenient time sink mechanics in place that I can tell that I am 'just wasting my time' while playing (lack of AH, xp cut off in a grind leveling system, etc.). I'm sorry but I do not have the time to search hours in a horribly laggy interface for an item and still not end up finding it, this is ridiculous and you are blind if you think this is actually a good idea.
I have played every Final Fantasy available and it wasn't until after FFX that I started 'giving' their new FFs a chance. All the new FFs are terrible to the point where I don't even finish them unless I feel I need to get my moneys worth out of it. FFXIV marks the first time that I will not spend money on an SE game to give it a chance, those days are over.
This kind of reminds me of the band metallica... they were great in the early days but they are terrible now but I still bought their new music in hopes that it would be better (after their last album I finally wised up and said "no more").
I hope SE learns from this in the future. I am not a lab rat so don't use me and my money for testing, that is what this release is, a beta test.

Of course you are entitled to that opinion, but I have to disagree. There is next to no content for people to judge what is intended for the future will suite their interest. With the current market there is always "the next thing". People won't simply wait, they'll just play something else.
As you point out, currently its a game full of place holders. A game that's had several years of development simply shouldn't be in this state. Place holders are usually present in alpha and early closed beta, not at release and especially not to this level.

omg! i had the same idea when i watched some gameplay-videos. Old Republic will fail as MMO. you can be sure about that. when the game is released and after 5 month it fails quote this guy and you know he was right.
As you point out, currently its a game full of place holders. A game that has several years of development simply shouldn't be in that state. Place holders are usually present in alpha and early closed beta states, not at release and especially not to this level.
You're looking at it the wrong way. These placeholders aren't there because the game is incomplete. These placeholders are there because Square-Enix fully intended to release the game planning ahead for post-release. Those placeholders we see are there because they had decided, long ago, that they would like to have the game in release for some time and see how things shook out so they could custom-tailor the content that goes into those placeholders appropriately.
Considering Final Fantasy XI did the same thing, and performed rather well, I'm inclined to believe that this was the case.

That doesn't matter. Its a bad decission on their behalf. The game's simply not in a release state, so why should people pay and play the waiting game.
That doesn't matter. Its a bad decission on their behalf.
Yes, a bad decision on their behalf.
Heaven forbid we consider the decisions of some of the most advanced game developers on the planet, of which Square-Enix surely qualifies, to be beyond the undrestanding of the average gamer forum poster.

I actually wanted to pipe in on this comment as my first and only defence of FFIV. Don't take this the wrong way but thats a pretty ignorant statement. "Release states" are merely in the eye of the beholder. If you weren't able to log in to make a character, sure you can say its not ready to be released. HOWEVER, you can log in, you can create a character, you can do quests, you can craft, you can explore, you can play with friends, etc Im sure the list goes on.
I do not agree with SE's nose up to NA/CAN/European clients and I am completely baffled by the need to handicap a able MMO by putting a console presence around it, but I can agree that MMO's are about growing.
It's like playing in the Beta of your favorite IP, you get to watch the game mold into something better each and every patch. Again though, this is SE. The only thing stopping me from buying this game in 3 months is the shitty UI.
In the wider scheme of things, I've played MMORPGs that were far crashier and laggier at release. Oh geez. Now you are comparing the people that find this game tedious and boring to people that throw bottles at an orchestra and yell, "WTF?! I don't like this old crap, play some goddamn speed metal!"
I guess the insults and condescension will truly never cease from the FFXIV community.
The opera thing was just an analogy to try to better explain to you how an impatient individual may feel uncomfortable if they attempt to enjoy an inappropriate form of entertainment. Personally, I thought it was a pretty apt analogy considering this was the precise topic at hand.
It's interesting how many people I encounter on forums who have discovered it's easier to act offended than it is to hold up their end of a discussion. Sometimes even moderators fall for this "I'm offended" act, which is a pity, it's really hard to hold a rational discussion when you go diving for mom's skirt whenever you don't like how it's turning out.
I could act real offended here that you seem determined to put the boot into anything FFXIV related, not excluding the community, that any malevolence you may be getting from them is clearly mere reciprocation, as you seem determined to pester them about how wrong they are to like the game they like, but I really don't want to sink to that level.
to me it seems like 1/2 of the complaints people have been spewing about this game seem to be nitpicky complains that will be changed in less than a week.
people seem to forget that Square has never made a numbered Final Fantasy game that was not premium QUALITY. Square makes odd design choices and people often disagree with their "Now for something completely different" approach to game design but they always have functional games that work the way they are intended to work. Square has one of the best art teams in the industry, the quality of animation and texturing in this game is impressive and it would be silly to think SE isn’t putting the same effort into the coding.
the technical problems currently facing the game are average for a a recently released MMO and will probably be fixed within a few weeks.
if your going to complain about the game, complain about DESIGN issues you dislike, not technical issues that will be fixed (this is how most MMOs should be judged at release, when is the last MMO that had no issues at release)
FFXIV is defiantly a Niche game, its not for everyone, its for people who enjoying spending their time inside a living-breathing world, not for people who want to play competitively. However, that does not make it a “BAD” game. It just makes it not for you.
I myself find the game to be pretty enjoyable despite the tech issues. The market system defiantly needs fixing, but I support their choice not to have an AH. (AH systems normally reduce entire cities to hundreds of people sitting around a window, the bazaar system can also lead to cool moments of finding “deals” that just don’t exist in the AH system, it does take a little longer to find things your looking for, but who said that shopping cant be part of the MMO experience?)
The combat is slow and relatively boring in the beginning, but around Rank 15 I had enough buttons to push that I have been entertained every battle. It is not FAST, but do we really identify combat in MMOs as faster=better? If so, we would all be playing Lineage 2, and nobody would be playing EvE.
And with regards to guildleves, once you start to party up with other people from your linkshell/guild doing a full set of Guildleves can take 5-6 hours+an hour for crafting, that gives you up too 7 hours of leves. Every 36 hours, then factor in sleep; that gives you more than enough content every 36 hours.
FFXI was a quality MMO, you may not have agreed with its design, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t quality.
FFXIV will be a quality MMO, it just may not be your thing.
SE is not the beat all company when it comes to MMOs. Yes we all have the right to be mad and upset at SE. You're quote right above WILL be a quality MMO when it SHOULD have been launched when it WAS a quality MMO. Honestly I like FF14 and I'll probably play it all he way up to the point and beyond when its a quality MMO but I hate it when people try to cover a developers butt when they make a bad choice. Lets face it they should have given the game 6 more months in the oven.
So honestly please stop trying to defend the game, state the facts for what they are. FF14 is a good foundation for an MMO but it is an incomplete MMO. FF14 will be a good MMO but it needs a lot of work. Lastly only diehard fans should be playing it right now because if nondiehard fans get on they'll just become upset and begin spreading lies and negative propoganda about the game. So to anyone who reads this and is on the fence about the game. Don't buy it unless you're willing to deal with some short comings for a while untill FF14 gets upto speed. I'm disapointed that SE even launched FF14 this early.

Actually...right now we're waiting for the server maintenance to finish. But that's generally true, yes.
