WoW killer Huh?

Luthor_XLuthor_X Member Posts: 431

That in itself is a bold statement, but I keep seeing it bounced around on this (and other) forums.

Please nicely explain why you believe it will / won't slay the behemoth.

Personally, I think the only thing that will kill WoW is time itself.

GW2 has no sub fee so you can play it and another MMO for no additional cost. That's why I think no. Why quit one if you can still play both?

  • BoltonsquadBoltonsquad Member UncommonPosts: 403

I also voted no, ill still raid 5 days a week in WoW once GW2 hit, but ill play GW2 casually if i have time.

I was one of the people that said AoC would kill WoW...

I also believed that WAR would do it...

I was certain that Aion would be the One...

This time I'm keeping my mouth bloody well shut.

Theres only 1 thing that can kill WoW this far into it and its WoW itself, no other game released unless by Blizzard will kill it.

How can GW2 kill something it was built to work around?

No game has killed any other game as far as I know.

Playing now: Cities: Skyline / Ori and the Blind Forest / Banished

I dont know why people would even want any game to kill WOW, in all honesty labeling something as such is nonsense.  I like Guild wars they go after a different audience, imo games that are coming out now will be a fresh air to the genre. I would like to see all games succeed, but only time will tell.

How could you tell if it did? It will only be box sales, not sub based. So no numbers to compare. We all know box sales don't say anything about the game. And without a sub base to go head to head. You can't say if it did or not.

It will be a fun game for many players, but that is all.

WoW will die of old age before anything else kills it.

Farmville 2 will kill WoW, not GW2.

    Playing: Starcraft II.
Played: Tibia, Ragnarok Online, Ultima Online, Guild Wars, World of Warcraft.
Wanna play: Guild Wars 2, SW:TOR, Final Fantasy XIV, Diablo III.

i really hope wow doesn't die though, cuz can you imagine how many whiny players will migrate into other games? (including guildwar2) and make everyones lives misrable by trolling like there is no tomorrow on forums, and ruining the game for everyone with whatever ways there is to ruin a game for others??? (not to insult wow players, but i heared most wow players are or act like children... not to offened anyone though >.>;)

The truth is, we don't want a WoW killer, what we truly want and will benefit from is a WoW contender. Even more than just one. In doing so, it will make companies compete for us, the gamers. Competition is ALWAYS good for business and the customer is the winner.

Someone needs to come along and show Blizzard they aren't the only ones who can put out a quality popular game. Hence making Blizzard get off their laurels and actually start to innovate.

Mark my words, either no one will compete or someone or more than one will and you will see a handful of games going head to head and the only issue you will have with it is which game to play on which day.

Nah, GW2 will have its fair share of whiners/trolls/flamers if it attracts large enough of a player base. That happens to anything exposed to too much of teh internets.

    Probably this.

Don't want WoW to die anyway. On the contrary, i want it to stay successful ... and provide competition. Forces companies to continue to develop and refine their IPs. Also means more choice. Overall, more win for consumers.

Edit: guess Elocke beat me to it image

Being the WoW killer means being able convince all the current WoW subscriber to give up their progress in WoW after years of grinding.

    That...seems impossible.

Ugh. I vote for consolidating all 'WoW killer' threads into one for now and forever.

They keep popping up, very often by posters that didn't post in GW2 forumsection at all, and besides that, having thread after thread of discussion whether GW2 is a WoW killer or not is beyond ridiculous and plain annoying.

well, the problem there is that  games get so hyped on various attributes of the games in question, and then when the games finally appear, we end up disapointed, even if the game is a decent one, but by ramping up expectations and extolling a games virtues (that may not necessarily exist in the final game or changed in some way!) players end up feeling cheated, i sometimes wish people wouldnt hype games so early, how long is it before GW2 is released 8 or 9 months? not that i think the game will be another STO or APB (apb... what a disaster and all that hype too...though never thought a game would do worse than STO!) personally i dont think GW2 will affect WoW in any way, probably a different demographic in any case, but it will i think, be a reasonably good game, GW1 certainly was, and i dont see any reason for GW2 not to be as successful as GW1... but i think the games popularity would be increased with... dare i say it.. less hype... besides, 8 or 9 months.. kind of tempting fateimage

GW2 just announced a new record number of Subs (reintroduction in CHina) 12 Million

When the expansion arives in the western world they could even make 15 million with the return of many previous players enthralled to have a look at the new content.

Untill the release of GW2 and SW:TOR  there will be a steadilly decline of numbers... But when these huge projects are as good as many expect then WoW might become smaller then 10 million subs again... loose actually 1/3 th of their subs, which is huge and may even force them to do server merges. But still neither GW2 nor SW:TOR will come close to that 10 million of subs in the first year after release.

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

I gave it up pretty easily.  I don't even dislike the game and I didn't need another MMO to pull me away.  My friends are still playing it but I have no interest in joining them.

    So it is possible.

Probably not, but has the best chance, let me explain :

WoW is additive, in other words it was build in a time that MMO's were still new and refreshing. PEOPLE WOULD PUT UP WITH LESS CONTENT.   Now no one can ever compete, because of the amount of content it gained.

However, GW2 may have the best chance if done right.  Meaning if it's launched as a FULL GAME, FUN...and remains FREE.  Then it will have the best chance of being the WoW killer, more so than any other.

I hate to say it but Vanguard could have come close.  WHY because they went for broke and lost. MASSIVE WORLD all at once.

    WoW= Full, and Fun

GW2= Full, Fun and FREE ( If this happens, then it has one up )
