“Talent trees are so simple and one dimensional now anyone can play these classes.” – but that’s the idea, so that anyone including your mum can play WoW. It falls in line with the corporate mentality expressed by the new CEO at EA, “We want everyone and their mum to be able to play our new games.”
Once they have dumbed down to your mum, what’s next? Well your dog does not play does he? Let’s make WoW suitable for a dog to play! Surely we can get more subs then? It is this sort of cynical, greedy mentality that curses MMO’s today. Anything is up for change if you think you can get more subs out of it.
Your assumption could not be more wrong. As Cata is a restart of things - both in landscape as in class design -.
You have to look at the redesign of talents as a new basis on which they can build again in their next expansions.
That being said: the game designers took care of the experience they had for 6 years now. PvP wasn't even in Vanilla Wow at launch.
These balanced talent points stand above the basic old vanilla wow design (and they take into account the progression the game had in the last 6 years: like dual specs).
The instruments added, so that your mummy can play, are not contradicting the overall new depth of classes in its end game.
As a healer paladin I now have about double the (useful) spells as I had before patch 4.01. That doesn't contradict with the fact your "newbie" is helped in the early game decisions with talent choices.
What im curious about is if the game is now so dumbed down, who are all these people crying about not being able to play their toons now? If its easier for the "non gamers" shouldnt it be easier in general? Ive seen some trade chat that is simply hilarious. So who do we believe? The "hardcore" saying its easier? The " non gamers" crying its hard? Or do what I do and see that its neither harder nor easier, just different with new diminsions of play?
WOW isnt great because it has 12 million players. WOW has 12 million players because its great.

Can't speak to the game overall, but based on past major releases (supporting the upcoming expansions), the player base has always complained that things are too hard. This even occurred with 3.0 when the game was definitely dumbed down (I was playing at that time)...it was really a matter that everyone needed some time to adjust to the changes. Once they figured out the changes (roughly a month for the majority of players), realization dawned on them on how easy things had become and they charged ahead.
To the subject of the thread, the talent trees are dumbed down...it does force people into cookie cutter specs (there is very little freedom left). For the game in general, it sounds like Ghostcrawler did an about-face regarding cc and threat management (essentially removed in 3.x)...which appears to be the bulk of complaints I've read so far. With those 2 aspects of the game restored (among the bigger reasons why I left), I'm actually eye-balling the game again. We'll see how the game looks once Cata is put out and running for a couple of months.

That is indeed where conflict arises. Because CC/Threat is a good thing. The trees are not. Is CC/Threat enough. Definitely one of those things at least worth $15 to try... not worth buying Cata, but definitely worth $15.
I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?

I agree GC went too far in some regards and not far enough in others. CC returning is good, AOE bursting a boss to death was bad.Iit meant you can also AOE burst someone down in PVP . And that was really bad. Now ranged burst is too high though. Healers and Pure DPS Casters are way over the top.
Since he decided to hit the reset switch on talents he should have don the same thing on gear. Simply stated he let burst get out of control and it is just too much. Everything needs to be scaled back down to at least BC standards. That means he has to scale instances from the ground up with the same extensive broom he used on the talent tree. Also he needs more flexibility on the talents. Five points to spare is just not enough and everyone playing the same class is just dum dum du dum dumb.
Contrary to the hype and the justification for this change, there are still plenty of useless and "filler" abilities to go around. They're just spread out more. Progression is completely screwed up. Prior to this patch, you could plan on going to your Trainer every other level and having a Talent Point to spend every level. It kind of gave you something to look forward to, even if it was a gradual building to what you want. Now, you have to constantly check to see when your next ability or Talent can be applied.
Also, being locked in to a Talent Tree until you can choose the top level Talent further displays Ghostcrawler's desire to control how you play. If you step back and look at it, that's what most of the gameplay changes are, shoehorning players so the game is easier for GC's team to manage. This was done for Blizzard, not for the players. Nice spin job, but it's just a smokescreen. Players are so busy managing the new class layouts, Blizzard is hoping you won't notice how little you're really getting when Cataclysm finally hits.
I have to think less; thus I am happier.
All they removed was the annoying, time-consuming crap of adjusting your character. The game still *plays* exactly the same.
Playing: *sigh* back to WoW -------- Waiting for: SW:TOR, APB, WoD --------- Played and loved: Eve and WoW -------- Played and hated: WoW:WotLK, Warhammer, every single F2P
As for the op, i don't think it's dumbing down, because whether you want to face it or not, the talent trees were always this simple. Theorycrafting will still exist, their will still be a gap between palyers that take time to learn about class mechanics.
I mean, lets face it. Nobody was making hybrid builds, or anything. Well i dont want to say no one, but a very insignificant part of the players were. Ppl all did the same thing, get to lvl 80, go read a theorycrafting site, spec their talent points, and never think about it again. The talents never sperated good from bad players, learning how to use class mechanics did.
Exactly this. Most everyone was speced the same in a class for a given role. Everyone would go out and read Elitist Jerks or a sticky post on WoW's official class forums, then spec/gem/enchant/glyph the way they were told. However, a given players ability to grasp that class mechanics was more important than many other factors.
There was a guy in my guild who knew the mechanics for playing a hunter extremely well. He would consistently out DPS better geared hunters, because his grasp of the class was far superior. It was very rare that I would ever see another hunter be able to compete with him DPS wise.
Class knowledge will always be a deciding factor between a good player and someone who is there just for the ride.
Honestly I don't even see why Blizzard bothers with the talent trees anymore. They should just make each class have 3 different generic specs you could choose from.

I really get the feeling that you either don't play WoW or have not -played it for a really, really long time. There are many other comments that make me think this, but the one is red is one example.
The second line in red is already addressed when Cata is released. You get 10 points. Not 5 points.
I think it's a little of both personally. They are streamlining the talent tree's but at the same time taking alot of the customization away from us. I AM NOT a cookie cutter player. I specifically spec my char for how i play and I do feel like I've lost my individuality w/ these changes.
Example 1: My tank druid..I never took the mangle debuff and consentrated more on my aggro stats. now i have to take all these talents i dont want to get to the ones i need. I see druids having to talent onto imp stuns just to get to their next tier.whens the last time you saw a raid boss that wasnt immune to stuns lol
Basically I still see alot of bloat even tho the tree's have been streamlined.
Tanking I think needed this as it was just toooo easy. especially when they took away the pos req on swipe. this will force tanks to pay more attn and cycle thru targets therefor adding a little challenge.
dps seems to be way off the charts. I wanted my priest to be a facemelter again. but wow, dropping ppl in like 6 secs is crazy.
One the tpic of dungeon ezmodeing. Well, i think alot of players need to look an the mirror. when gearscore came out ppl started putting benchmarks on gs for dungeons. Well, when you can do an icc run with 5k gs and you request 6k gs's it kinda takes away from you're "i want hardmodes" philosophy. lol
INb4 "umad u only 3kgs": i have done icc and have 6k gs'd chars.
Overall i think the patch has its merits and flaws and I'll just hope the continuous complaints will have blizz working to improve the flaws.
Dumbing down obviously. WoW made its fortune by dumbing down already simple game mechanics and advertising their game to people who don't normally play games. Same as the Wii. And they'll continue to do it. There was never anything complex about WoW.

That's not really saying much at all. And no, word on the street is, WoW is easier than ever, which is impressive, because it was the simplest MMO on the market when it came out.

Word on the street is false. Perhaps the solo experience is easier for some classes, but nothing else is.
Have you played WoW for an extended period of time?

Nearly put me to sleep, but yes. What exactly would you say is hard about it? And please, don't say raids, because WoW raids are quite a few degrees lower than raids in real MMOs like EQ and DAoC, instances make everything easier.

Word on the street meaning people like you and your friends who spread rumours and false accusations about anything and everything. WoW has ALWAYS been a very easy game to play. Them "dumbing down" or making the game accessible to everyone as the rest of us call it, is making them millions of dollars in a raised subscriber base. At the end of the day they are a business. Theyre not going to make it mind blowingly hard or tedious just because a select few gets their rocks off on it.
That will just cause a substantial loss in subscriber numbers and therefore profits.

The tactics are more complicated. Especially in PvP. With the new abilities they are adding, it's going to make combat even more diverse and interesting.
And I will say raids. Because hard mode raids are extremely difficult. Very, very few people are able to complete them. Hard mode Lich Kind was no joke. Hard mode WoW raids are leaps and bounds above EQ and DAoC not only in difficulty, but in complexity as well.

Used a scroll of resurrection recently on my old WoW account. I wouldn't say the mechanics are more complicated than ever...although I can understand why many players of WoW would say that. The return of the need for cc and threat management is probably new to a large percentage of users since it has been largely missing from the game for nearly 2 years. Some of the changes I've seen so far are rather interesting, but I personally wouldn't call them particularly complicated.

I did not answer to the poll for the simple reason my answer was not listed: (roughly) the same.
I mean there is no real improvement, except for those who like easyness (reforging), and there is no disapointment, except for the people stuck to keep what they used to do.
The game remains as it has always been: the most accessible MMO in the history, and thus the most successful one.

The classes are more diverse in an overall sense. As people pick up the 3 abilities between levels80 and 85, it will get even more diverse.
And I agree in a way. I don't find any MMORPG that I've ever played very complicated. EVE might be the exception and I love that game. I find this one to have a better overall gameplay diversity and feel to it than most others. Comparing this expansion to say, BC or vanilla, I'd say it's far more complex and interesting.

Yes, it is infuriating when mediocre uninspired unoriginal titles become smash hits simply because Blizzard has a massive marketing budget and made the game easy as dirt, when good innovative push the envelope titles waste away. And the fact that you're happy about that shows that you don't care about the game industry.

That's just sad. Seriously. An MMO without CC or agro management...and it's doing well. Blizzard has hundreds of employees, what do they DO with their time? Obviously not come up with exciting game mechanics. They probably spend all their time playing other MMOs so they can figure out what to steal and water down, then shove into their giant Borg Cube of WoW.

Whew, those really are just pure WoW hate posts. Any form of objectivity appears to have been crushed under a pile of bitterness.
