This question may very well be the primary concern of Blizzard with Cataclysm, or so have I come to think in time.
This weekend I was with a friend and we were discovering the worgen and goblin starting areas. Along with the new mechanics (talents, specs etc), it seems that most classes are now not only much more "able", but also much earlier in their leveling process. Considering how Blizzard very nicely integrated the two new races' storyline into the main setting of WoW, and how they managed to re-draw most of the NPCs and questlines into a new "global leveling path", I must tell you, frankly, that we were quite astonished. Blizzard is doing a fairly good job. And this is coming from two guys who never stopped exploring other MMOs ever since we left WoW some 3 years ago. That matter of the fact remains: though we're not particularly attracted by WoW's design as a whole (calling for innovation, looking for "other ways", and so on), it's difficult not to be tempted by Cataclysm when you're retired of WoW whereas still an active MMO player.
All of this pertains to the leveling process, the re-discovering of Azeroth for those of us who spent a sizeable amount of time in Vanilla, the re-imaging by Blizzard of the core "hooks" of the game. Starting a character is now a totally guiding-and-holding-your-handprocess (if it weren't already, but I assure you there will not be one human unable to play this game as of Dec, 2010). Most questing add-ons have been integrated into the game, making questing more likely to immerse you into the game's world (no need to Thottbot anymore, ever), and I give a big +1 for that. Especially when some other MMO find it "normal" to ask you to essentially marry with fansites in order to progress.
I haven't tested the HL content (Lv 80+) yet, but all starting areas have convinced me that Blizzard, contrary to my initial guess before I tried Cataclysm (TY@Angus1984), is proposing not just a cosmetic lifting of old Azeroth, but rather a remake of a game that could have been that if it were to be released in 2010. The picture I get, to rephrase, is this one:

no, every expansion costs money, wich i would rather spend on something else.
Like FF 14 or APB ... )
You know these kind of posts makes me smile: the "competition" on the MMO market became worse actually over these past years.
FF14 was part of the Holy trinity (FF14 SW, GW2) that would destroy WOW for the Xth time in 6 years. (X even stands for a double figure these days).
It dropped from the lists one week after publication. It was curious to see how C. and some others quickly replaced it with some other unpublished hype..
Yep, up for the next dud in Beta.
OP: welcome back in the game that's published.
I voted no but in Reality I would actually vote
Hellz NO NEVER EVER
Frostmourne would rust away before I even considered coming back to this steaming pile
I've not played the game since the pre-WotLK patch; not because I was unhappy with the changes (enjoyed the Hunter and Warrior changes then if I recall correctly) but just general tedium.
The new expansion seems interesting and as a fan of Warcraft before there was a MMO Deathwing was a favorite character of mine. I like a lot of the changes to the system even tho' some people decry it a simplification. (Honestly.. Was WoW ever complex? WTF..)
I'm just not interested enough to subscribe again since I'm happy playing City of Villains with my crew and even tinkering around in DDO, LotRO, and a few other casual games.
I'll play WoW again, but it'll be well into next year I figure.
Not a chance. Leaving back in Jan 2007 was the best thing I ever did as a gamer. More power to those of you still playing or considering returning.
I am coming back for Cata, and recently resub'd since 4.0.1 came out. Overall, I do think Blizzard is on a much better track than they were with Wrath. You can read more detail on my experience here - http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game/15/view/forums/thread/295689/Resub-Review-First-Impressions.html
For me, if it was the same mechanics as Wrath, but just a re-imaging of Azeroth, I would definitely pass. Pretty scenes and a nifty storyline are nice...but if the mechanics become too easy mode (Wrath removed the need for cc and trivialized threat), the game isn't worth it. However, it appears that Ghostcrawler learned a few lessons from Wrath and has restored some of the more important aspects of game mechanics (need to mash more than 2 buttons again)...at least for the end-game where it is most important if you want to play the game long-term.
The game still has some short-comings, but all games do. I've played it enough to see that I should be able to enjoy the game for a year or two again.
While I'm somewhat intregued to see what they've done with the old world, and I'd enjoy leveling up a new character in it I'm sure, knowing that its all designed to rush me to an endgame model I don't care for will keep me away, so put me down as Rather Not.

I stopped playing pre BC, just started again last week with my girlfriend.
It is much different now and this is the last time to expierience the original content, which used to be pretty tedious.
i leveled a paladin and it was very fast and i never really struggled soloing elite or group quests. (61 in 3d played, apparently it gets even faster after cata)
in the old days you had to be careful about what you were pulling, now i wouldn't fight less than 3 at a time.
not bad changes to me, and apparently cata is supposed to be even more alt friendly.
die.
I will not come back for Cata. I had fun playing WoW (especially at launch; lvl`s 1-60), but I`ll never go back. The fun started wearing off with Burning Crusade, and the fun stopped during WotLK. I liked many aspects of WoW and I think the game is well polished, for what it is. I hope the people that return to WoW enjoy Cata.
probaby will, but mostly because all the newer mmos to date have been very disappointing.
all things considered 2010 has not been a good year for mmos. WoW is still king and by a long shot. it will be nice going over the old zones but i'm pretty sure this time arround i'll get bored within 2 months at the most.
still hoping for 2011 to bring out some decent mmos that can give WoW a run for it's money......or, my money actually
untill then WoW will have to do.
My WoW days are filed away. Like an old Playboy Magazine. At one time it was exciting. Now, its something I'm ashamed of experiencing.

I could treat it as new title, see how well done MMO can be and leave the whole genre behind in disgust how the rest is lame, I guess.
It will be painful coming back to old chars, I could not play my old hunter when BC came and it will be even more painful holding my old Rhok again now, they abandoned further individual challenges even before vanilla release. The MMO audience has changed, back then you pretty much assumed the PUG guys are capable and they usually were. Our understanding of the genre changed, there is no exploration of the genre itself any more, not in this direction. Oh and the pointless PvP raids just for the fun of playing a game. Strange thing is I have bank carefully packed for when I return. I never returned.
Going back to WoW would a be a good end to my MMO journey. May be it is time. The genre is going nowhere.
I said goodbye to my old toons. I shall roll a tauren paladin. Enough said.
I just resubbed this month, checking out the class changes before cataclysm hits.
And tauren paladins FTW!
No, it will be the same boring game with a bunch of lil kids playing it. Adding more areas, goblins and worgen are not changing the base concept of the game much. Also, Blizzard has lost control of their game to the gold farmers when you see lvl 1 toons dancing in the air in the major cities. Huge security issues there. I sometimes wonder if the gold farmers can hack the game to that point, I wonder what they can access on the client end? I am happily playing Lotro and loving it!
nope im so done with wow and happy to wash my hands of it
nope.. All the reasons for leaving WoW last year are still there, and will continue to be there after Cataclysm.. I'd rather spend my money on lottery tickets instead..
I am going to make it a point to torture Tauren Pallies in PvP.
Besides, I used to keep an eye out for tauren females just to listen to their funny death cry.
For Cataclysm? Yes.
For the Cataclysm Lite that they are doing? It is very difficult to say yes and lends itself well to a no instead.
If it were a case that they were going to work the missing items from Cata in during the next six months to a year, I could see getting Cata at that point.
You do not need to purchase Cata to get much of what is changing...which just seems silly. Heck, if not for how Blizzard screwed those that will not be reaching 70 with the talent trees... those that have just purchased the original WoW box appear to be getting the most out of the changes with Cata - not those that bought Crusade, Lich King, or will be buying Cata.
That just rubs me wrong...
I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?

How many people long for that "past, simpler, and better world," I wonder, without ever recognizing the truth that perhaps it was they who were simpler and better, and not the world about them?

Problem is i think Ivvy is that you do have too much time on your hand .
You are already sold and will try it , but i think judging on your post , it wont take long before you quit again .
That is nothing new , i seriously recommend you to try the game on your own .
When you play as a couple (Friends or RL related) somebody has to make comprimises .
Maybe you should try cataclysme on your own , see if you like it .
You going to buy it anyway , if i read your post right, you are already sold.
To your question .
No people who usually quits MMO like wow , miss it very much , but suddenly they realise its not the game they are missing .
Its the social interaction that keeps people hooked , its the people that keep other people hooked.
When they return usually they have to start from 0 again , not in toon but in interaction with others .
While game like wow is great and fun , its like every other mmo a timesink , but without people around to annoy you , cheer you , frustrated you , make you feel happy , the game would be stale mate fast .
catalysm is pretty good- well the Worgen starting area in particular. But as I've found- even doing this Beta if you've tired of WoW intially the likelihood is you're tire again. So maybe wait for the 10 day catalysm trial to give it a go.
Nope not going to play Cata, quit at 72 in wotlk, nothing new.
Same stuff different jacket. so No
Only meaningfull change for me are rated bg's and the fact that now there will be a need to find a mature and friendly guild to play in organised premade rated bg's and get rid of pug raids.
Archaelogy isnt by itself a reason to play and pay sub for a game ,it just adds abit to flavour.
Bad news is i got disapointment a lot by the new talents . They restricted your choises even more ,oversimplified the builds, which kills the depth and freedom of choises a player MUST have in an mmoRPG.
Also they didnt implement the Titan's path which would be an extra + on character depth's development system.
Arena is still there which is a +.
Dont know how combat mechanics will work (hunter got rebuild on its combat mechs energyinstead of mana pool),along with all new skills ,i guess u have to cap 85 lvl and raid+pvp to check ow it will go.
All in all i get a fewling of rather not coming back but maybe. But that will be up from the rest mmorpg's that will come too.
If GW 2 or Tera,or Rift delivers what aoc or ddo or lotro failed to achieve i surely wont come back to wow for cataclysm.
Instead i predict a cataclysm for wow.
It is odd that standing before the gates of a massively played realm based RvR zone like Lake Wintergrasp with its dynamic landscapes and destructable towers and fortresses, you dream about a game that's not even published.
