Archeage Closed Beta reviews! gets it right where Tera doesn't?

http://aaportal.net/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=52&Itemid=73⟨=en

Check out the two reviews on here, it seems a well funded experienced team is finanally creating the Sandbox/Themepark hybrid I've been waiting for.

- Flexible characters

- Interactive/destructable world

- Dynamic weather and beautiful graphics

- Territory control and conquest

- Lots of sandbox features

- Huge seemless world (x3 times size of WoW is being thrown around)

Many archeage videos worth looking through in this channel

Another aspect that Archeage seems to have gotten right.

In Archeage there are 10 ability schools, a character may learn all of them but only have three active at a time. It costs a significant amount of money to switch these schools but allows for long term character development and the flexibility to do what you need if it's worth the cost.

Tera it seems you can only vairy within your own archetype.

Player conquorable cities, on one continents players are also capable of building their own cities from scratch. Houses can be made public or private and linked together to form villages and towns.

Ahhh fixed in the OP now, thank you.

I was supprised to see Tera lacks technologically compared to Archeage, given it's huge budget. No doubt Tera will be a huge success but for more experienced gamers Archeage will definately be a breath of fresh air.

Maybe.. But the game's graphics aren't as good as TERA's.. It may appeal to a broader audience because of it's more forgiving system requirements, though.

Can't say I expect much from this game. I've been burned one too many times on Japanese Games and I'm afraid to try any others at this point.

looks very interesting, the artwork in the clicky is some of the best I have seen, anybody who read any of my posts can tell you quickly that's how I determine a game is crud.

I loved the screenshots,  would be interesting to see some game play vid.

The only drawback to it was all the screenshots showed Korean writing, unless there is an English option filter that puts the game out of my preview, as well I don't speak or write Korean.  So hopefully there is that option.

One has to ask is this like other Korean games  where grind is king?

Isn't ArcheAge the one with the full scale Sailing ships?

Thanks for the link, was a good read.

This game seems like its going to have alot of technical obstacles ahead of it, cryengine 2 with no instancing and planned 'sieges'? people struggled shitloads with cryengine 1 in Aion etc, and that was instanced to hell.

Nonetheless I like alot of ideas in this.

The whole article seems to be really against Tera for some reason, we'll have to see.

    Korean MMOPRG...

The pics that showed a lot of players in 1 area all looked the same...

    If it is FTP.....

    Grind Fest INC!

has nothing to do with TERA other than also being an MMORPG....

I've seen two videos for ArcheAge.

In one there looked to be a lot of cut scenes mixed with some gameplay.  The gameplay looked horrendously boring and grindy.  However, the purpose behind the boring and grindy gameplay might be very interesting.  It's hard to say how the meta game will actually play out.  It could be very cool.

In the next we got to see some combat and looking at it all I could see was grind.  Not very interesting at all.  There was one bit where a guy hopped on a horse and then backed it up to have it kick an armored guy on a beach, but then it looked like his horse got speared and died.  The armored guy's buddies all sat around on the beach watching him get kicked by a horse and didn't do anything.  This game's strengths are not the combat or the mob AI.  At least from what I could see in the videos.

There are castle sieges, ocean combat with big boats, sea monsters, etc. which would be a lot cooler.  We need a better picture of the overall game I think.  The solo combat could be grindy and boring, but it also might only be a small part of the game.  Perhaps owning a house and gardening or farming could take up a lot of time - Farmville with awesome graphics and combat.

Tera focuses on combat, which looks very exciting.  And there, we need more information too.  What else fills out the game?  Is it well rounded or is the combat awesome and the whole meta game horrendously boring?  How can you even tell from the available information?

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

Archeage is game to appeals to former EQ1,Utilma,EvE,Mortal Online,Darkfall players

Tera is for gamers who wish WoW had more open exicting combat style, better graphics and little more freedom in the world.

Compare them is apples and oranges they are primary targets are not the same people. For some reason people don't seem to understand just like all military shooters or futuristic shooters have similarites,Alot of Asian MMO have similarites.Just like Runes of Magic,Allods,Warhammer and Rifts all look like WoW but because game have a similar looks grahically does not mean they are trying to do same thing.Tera and Archeage are not trying do samething it is like saying Gears of Wars and Bulletstorm are trying do the samething.

I hope gamers embrace Archeage because it is the first time i have seen a modern Sandbox game have above average graphics fallen earth,Mortal,Earthrise,Darfall all don't make you go wow.It is a big budget sandbox game.Whether you have burned in the past by Asian games take a long look at this game,It sucess could open door for more of it kind.

I admit, I only looked at the pictures. Still, I can't imagine a CryEngine 2 MMORPG. That's like shooting yourself in the foot. Who could run it? Lol =(

I'd play the game just to play as one of those races. That's a beautiful race.

Aion and Entropia both run on the Cryengine 2 FYI not speaking of the games themselves but its a rock solid and highly polished MMORPG engine if used right

Umm.. Aion runs on the CryEngine, the same engine used in Street Fighter IV PC and Sonic and SEGA'S All Star Racing, as well as FarCry. The CryEngine 2 is used in Crysis.. So by what you're saying, this game has the same engine as Aion.

If this game used the CryEngine 2, nobody could run it at a respectable frame rate.. Lol

I'm going to update the OP with some video links so they can get a better idea of what Archeage is about, I do think its reasonable to compare with Tera. Although mob AI appears to be slow and weak all we've seen so far are the starter mobs in begginner quests, perhapes high-end mobs will be more advanced.

As for the graphics, eaither get a rig with 64bit, 6 ram and a good graphics card or tone down the settings lol.

Its meant to be an uninstanced world and everything too,  its just so perplexing,

Nah. If this game uses the CryEngine then it'll be easy to run. The CryEngine is a very flexible Engine and can run just about as well as WoW. Now the CryEngine 2.. That's a different Story.

There's a reason people test their new hardware on Crysis. A very good reason.

The engine doesn't have to be poorly optimized and can and will run on machines with less than the best components.  A few things that bother me about this game are.

    1) its Korean and they dont know how to make a game that isint a complete grindfest. (you are more than welcome to prove me wrong here but i cant think of a single one including Aion)

    2) Sounds, someone posted the other video of this game yesterday and i hate listening to the female voice sounds where it sounds like a 12yr old girl is getting punched in the gut or molested because it sounds like one of the 2 in every Korean game i have ever played.

    3) It's F2P which means it was originally developed to be F2P which in Korean terms means we are going to make every task in game so ridiculously tedious you will use our cash shop or /wrist.

  • thorppesthorppes Member Posts: 452

Well the game is been developed by a very experienced team with a decent budget. Any link on that FP2 you're claiming? I haven't seen any word on it myself.

    (Op updated with some videos)

  • StoogeMonkeyStoogeMonkey Member Posts: 185

the budget this mmo must have, and they base their model around haveing a huge amount of people to get any income because of a f2p model, even though they cut off a huge portion of their possible playerbase by using cryengine 2, i mean seriously how many gamers would pay for a $1500+ rig and not be financially comfortable enough to pay a sub? F2Pers generally have low end systems.

edit: wait... is it f2p or not? :/

  • elockeelocke Member UncommonPosts: 4,335

I have to say, this actually looks far more interesting to me than Tera. Maybe this will be the game that the "east" gets right.

i would laugh my ass off, if after TERA, RIFT, GW2 and SWTOR the new Messiahs finally comes from Korea ;)

however, after we will know the truth about the above mentioned big four, there will be still hope. thats good to know.
