Now doesn't that seem like a step back? This is 2011. I'm sorry, but the graphics as they stand now, are incredibly cheaply made. There is no reason why they couldn't go for Mass Effect at least concerning model detail, considering that game runs just fine on even older systems.
You don't get the problem. Having awesome graphics on a SINGLE PLAYER game is one thing, but having it on a MMO is another.
Single player - All a computer has to load is the game. Nothing else.
MMO - Your computer is required to take information over the internet and relay the data in game concerning what is happening while you play. The whole problem with doing this while having great graphics is that it doesn't allow some computers to keep up.
Which is taking a graphically intense game is usually bad for most MMORPGs.

I won't say the graphics are outstanding because frankly they aren't. I will say that i would have like to see a more realistic look, but i will also say i'm okay with how the game looks.
The only thing i will correct on is the ToR image is likely taken from the 2009 shot. Thus has had about a year and a half to cook so to speak. We will have to wait and see though.
I'm not expecting a miracle change but i think and i could be wrong here, but i think it was stated the graphics improved a lot from the build shown in ToR.
Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.

If the game proves to be a good one, then I will probably play it regardless. The graphics/art aren't that bad, I guess, but it still drives me insane. I mean, it's really starting to resemble this abomination.

Let's be honest too, while I agree that the art style of Clone Wars is bad, at least it is better than watching the Smurfs on saturday morning like you do when you play WoW. BTW, I am playing WoW right now to take up time until SWTOR launches and the art SUCKS. In my opinion of course. Thankfully I am just piggybacking on a friends account and don't actually have to PAY for the game.
"If half of what you tell me is a lie, how can I believe any of it?"

And what exactly is wrong with the Smurfs?
Haha. Thanks for the picture, but that's my point exactly. Even when you try to "improve" a Smurf it still looks like a lame 1980's cartoon for 5 year olds. Well, with this picture maybe 8 year olds would be more appropriate, but you get my point.

On Topic: I like the graphics/style so not an issue for me.
Gdemami - Informing people about your thoughts and impressions is not a review, it's a blog.
The reality is that as so many others have stated, this is all so subjective. For example, i wasn't so impressed with the AOC graphics (except the water) as much as others are. I actually preferred the graphics in Lord of the Rings Online (minus the animations which were much better in AOC). Some like the Aion type style. Some are drooling over the art style of the upcoming GW2. I know that my guild in WOW who dont even know there is a gaming world beyond WOW never thought twice about the graphics. I still hear comments about how pretty they think the world is or an armor set, etc.
For me personally, I have learned its not so much about which style is chosen (cartoony, realism, etc) as much as how finely tuned that pick is from a technical standpoint. How do the graphics look at 1920x1280. Do they take full advantage of Antilasing? Bloom? Shadows? etc. Just how much detail of artwork is in every square inch of what we are seeing? Do things sway naturally in the wind? How are the physics? Does the color scheme work? Do they run smooth? Does it make me want to explore to see what it looks like when looking down on top of a mountain? From my standpoint, it is possible to have exceptional graphics and animations regardless of the art style chosen knowing the HUGE limitations of an online world versus a single player game.
Whether you like the graphics choice or not, there is no disputing that they have improved drastically since the builds that were released over the summer. I expect nothing but further improvements in the months ahead.

For once I'm glad to see someone agree that LotRo graphics are better than AoC (but the animations). With lower polys LotRo is able to give at least as good graphics, especially the trees. For example in AoC when you activate the physics on the grass it's so overdone that you feel like wandering around in a chopper and the bloom makes your eyes bleed.
Now back to TOR. I would not say the graphics are that lame. They are a bit too cartoonish, especially with the heroic proportions, the colors and plastic like textures used. The big shoulderpads really don't fit a semi-realistic SW game. And it seems there are quite a few fantasy patterns in some design: consular robes, spiky shoulder pads, sith blood elves.
It's too late but would they have tweaked down these above features, the game graphics while still stylized would have been great. It seems they were a bit overzealous in their extrapolations. Finally from all we saw I'd say the environmental artists did a great job, really.
Everyone whined bout WoW's graphics when it was released. The point I think people need to realize is that there is a recession for last few years and the swtor devs want people to be able to play it. Most people only get a new pc when absolutely needed. It is smart on their part to keep the game available to be played by more pc's.

I will agree on the cartoonish end, and maybe they went a little too much on some of the factors. But i think someone linked (it could be in this thread) where someone indeed did have that much spikey armor.
We don't know how many armor peices have that look. It could be just that one or it could be several. If it's just the one i think we can overlook one spikey shoulderpad armor piece that you may only have for a couple of levels. As for the *ahem* elfish sith person.
I'll go along with that but i don't think they will act anywhere near as elvish as they do in other games. Really the only thing that makes em elfish is the pointy ears.
You are right on the elfish look and the overdone graphics but i don't see the problem with the proportions, they look fine to me.
Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.

I do not personally have any problems with either of your arguments here since they are so subjective, except that one sentence I high-lighted in red. Have you EVER looked at real body armor? I will agree that they don't look realistic, but for exactly the opposite reason. Here is a suggestion. Jump on your favorite search engine and look up any military or law enforcement photos where they are wearing REAL body armor. I think you will find if anything the armor in SWTOR is undersized, not over sized. We do need to "suspend our disbelief" in this game though, since the technology if it were real, would be so far advanced beyound ours that they may be able to wear flexible titanium spandex and have it more effective at protecting a person than any tank we could ride in today.
In the end, I would say the armor proportions look just fine even if you have decided not to like them.

Remove the lighsaber and tell me that doesn't look like a fantasy character nor make you think about another game, as much as the Warlock priest looking Inquisitor in that pic below:
Now about the big shoulder pads, the only game that I experienced and has realistic armors is LotRo. From my limited knowledge I never saw any military or law inforcement pics with gear as huge and inconvenient than:
or that:
Now about heroic proportions. How about the oversized hands:
In the below pic the waist is impossibly thin and can't possibly support such oversized upper features.
And to say it bluntly the devs stated that they went intentionally that way to give a specific feeling to the game.
For the plastic looking texture, check the washed out Wookiee, doesn't look like fur to me.
Have a look at this creature skin:
All this might certainly be subjective. As much as Darth Jadus looking more like a marvel comic evil fly like character than a SW one.
So the graphics don't sux but some of them don't really fit a SW lore.
There were several play throughs from several different reviewing companies, and dang near every one of them liked the game, so i don't think it's as big of a problem as were being lead to believe. I could be wrong and you do point out some interesting points. However if it was a huge issue, then the reviewers would have stated it. Heck even the ones against it, looking for stuff to be wrong with it, never brought the graphics issue up.
just my input of course, take it however you want.
Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.

A very good point, the fun factor will make or kill the game. And combat, which is the core root for any MMO, seems very fun, story being only a topping, as much as graphics.
I would say everyone knows the artistic take is a bit controversial (same for the space shooter) but none seems eager to point at it. It's busyness after all. However this is a very subjective take
Many people rant and whine about the graphics and gameplay because of some youtube videos, but i say after Dragonage, Kotor and Mass effect I'm gonna trust Bioware to make this game perfect! Just wait for the full release and you will see.

Expect a game that will be fun to play and has an enjoyable story and I think you won't be disappointed. Expect perfection and you most certainly will be.

Well i didnt mean it literally perfect but every game that has Bioware name on it is pure gold so i expect SWTOR to be gold too.
Remove the lighsaber and tell me that doesn't look like a fantasy character nor make you think about another game,
Actually, I think the red skin, yellow eyes and vestigal face tentacles look kind of neat. On top of that the Sith Purebloods are actually crossbreed of humans and the original sith, so this look is rather fitting. Now if these face tentacles protruded a foot beyond the head, maybe I could understand you position, but as is, it looks more like you are exxagerating. Keep in mind though, the only real difference between Fantasy and SciFi is the level of technology.
as much as the Warlock priest looking Inquisitor in that pic below:
Your complaining about that? I've seen more "far out" stuff on runway models on TV. After the Star Wars Prequals this even seems iconic of Star Wars now. Is it different than the original Trilogy? Sure it is, fashions change, no biggie.
Now about the big shoulder pads, the only game that I experienced and has realistic armors is LotRo. From my limited knowledge I never saw any military or law inforcement pics with gear as huge and inconvenient than:
I spent 13 years as a United States Marine. I did a LOT of training for Riot Control and I can tell you from experience that the real problem with this picture is that the shoulder and knee pads are the right size and everything else about the body armor is undersized. Good armor is big, heavy, and unweildy. It has to be in order to actually provide protection.
or that:
I will admit that this armor's shoulder pads are a little over done, kind of like ceremonial armor used back in the Medieval Ages. That stuff was so overdone as to be completely useless for protection, but it looked really nice. hmmm . . . Shiny!
Now about heroic proportions. How about the oversized hands:
This is a very old picture which can be proven when you look at the picture of the same Smuggler you provided below. They did resize the hands in that one. So I am not buying the heroic proportions argument.
In the below pic the waist is impossibly thin and can't possibly support such oversized upper features.
Ummm . . . ever see a picture of Angelina Jolie before they forced her to gain weight for the movie "Wanted". She made the girl in this picture look FAT. It really is hard to argue this picture though since she is bent over which enhances the chest and twisted at the waist which also enhances the chest, as well as, changing the look of the waist and making a thin person look thinner.
I do need to add that I used to do a lot of Martial Arts training while in the Marines and the only person that ever beat me in a sparing match was a girl with this kind of build. She was FAST, NIMBLE, and FLEXIBLE as heck. All in all, this is a very realistic body type. Just not a common one.
And to say it bluntly the devs stated that they went intentionally that way to give a specific feeling to the game.
Having a specific look and feeling is a good thing. It creates a certain perception of the game. Basic human nature states that perception is reality and so this game could be an exact clone of another gameplay wise, BUT we would perceive it as being different because of the art style. Good.
For the plastic looking texture, check the washed out Wookiee, doesn't look like fur to me.
I don't particularly like this wookie's look either. If I had done the art, I would have given him a more dusty look so the hair looked more real, but I also recognize that any particular breed of animal has a variety of coat looks and it radically changes what that animal looks like. If the Devs take advantage of THAT it will be a good thing for all of us. Variety is the spice of life after all.
Have a look at this creature skin:
What is wrong with this creatures skin? You don't like that it has a slippery, slimy look to it? Not everything has human type skin. Slugs for example have a very moist type skin, while fish are scalely and slimy feeling/looking. Repitles on the other hand are scaley and dusty looking on average, but snakes can range from a "slippery" look to a dusty look. Again, variety is awesome.
All this might certainly be subjective. As much as Darth Jadus looking more like a marvel comic evil fly like character than a SW one.
Yes, your statements are very subjective, being based solely on how you feel and not looking at a larger picture. My statements have also been a little subjective, but at least I am looking past my own feelings and comparing things in a less subjective way.
So the graphics don't sux but some of them don't really fit a SW lore.
OK, this statement is entirely incorrect! I'm not trying to attack you here, but if you only compare the art style of this game to the original movie series then you would be almost correct except for Darth Vader. Unfortunately, the Prequals (no matter how you feel about them) are part of the "Star Wars Lore" and this art style fits in pretty well with them. In the end though, this game is based what . . . 3,500 years before the movies? They could have gone in a completely different art style and still been able to say that "Hey, stuff changes over several millenium?"
OK Deewe, my answers to your post are in GREEN above. I got rid of the previous text since it didn't really apply.

"If half of what you tell me is a lie, how can I believe any of it?"
Remove the lighsaber and tell me that doesn't look like a fantasy character nor make you think about another game,
Keep in mind though, the only real difference between Fantasy and SciFi is the level of technology.
=> Right still they really look like WoW blood elves.
as much as the Warlock priest looking Inquisitor in that pic below:
Your complaining about that? I've seen more "far out" stuff on runway models on TV. After the Star Wars Prequals this even seems iconic of Star Wars now. Is it different than the original Trilogy? Sure it is, fashions change, no biggie.
=> Maybe I forgot to say episodes I-III while part of the lore have some really /facepalm features... and this guys does not belong to SW in my book, especially with the skulls on this robe and the brain texture that you can't see on the back of this helmet.
Now about the big shoulder pads, the only game that I experienced and has realistic armors is LotRo. From my limited knowledge I never saw any military or law inforcement pics with gear as huge and inconvenient than:
I spent 13 years as a United States Marine. I did a LOT of training for Riot Control and I can tell you from experience that the real problem with this picture is that the shoulder and knee pads are the right size and everything else about the body is undersized. Good armor is big, heavy, and unweildy. It has to be in order to actually provide protection.
=> Saying the body is undersized is another way to say the shoulder pads are over sized Please post pics of that really over sized riot control and medieval armor because from my knowledge Apart very few display/ceremony armors I don't know any one. (In that pic the shoulder pad is at least a feet an half long and about a feet wide)
or that:
I will admit that this armor's shoulder pads are a little over done, kind of like ceremonial armor used back in the Medieval Ages. That stuff was so overdone as to be completely useless for protection, but it looked really nice. hmmm . . . Shiny!
=> I don't know any medieval armors with shoulder pads that goes down as far as the middle of the forearm.
Now about heroic proportions. How about the oversized hands:
This is a very old picture which can be proven when you look at the picture of the same Smuggler you provided below. They did resize the hands in that one. So I am not buying the heroic proportions argument.
=> Your take but not only it's obvious but it's been pointed out by the devs. Sorry I can't provide a link
In the below pic the waist is impossibly thin and can't possibly support such oversized upper features.
All in all, this is a very realistic body type. Just not a common one.
=> I also saw once an anorexic girl with way over sized breast and it was weird and disturbing. So yes it does exists but it's not natural either. at least the one I saw had implants.
And to say it bluntly the devs stated that they went intentionally that way to give a specific feeling to the game.
Having a specific look and feeling is a good thing.
=> Right, I'm just saying this iconic and cartoonish looks would better fit a comic game than a SW one. But I agree this is a matter of personal taste.
=> Looks like a cheap plastic doll. Let's hope it's just a placeholder until they come out with a much better texture.
Have a look at this creature skin:
What is wrong with this creatures skin? You don't like that it has a slippery, slimy look to it? Not everything has human type skin. Again, variety is awesome.
=> This was just another example and plastic looking textures are nice unless they become commonly associated with too many things. If I remember well the Ithorian and the rancor also had plastic looking textures too.
All this might certainly be subjective. As much as Darth Jadus looking more like a marvel comic evil fly like character than a SW one.
Yes, your statements are very subjective,
=> Indeed, as much as yours. But that's normal. Graphics are a matter of personal taste.
So the graphics don't sux but some of them don't really fit a SW lore.
OK, this statement is entirely incorrect! They could have gone in a completely different art style and still been able to say that "Hey, stuff changes over several millenium?"
=> They mostly fit the clone wars episodes, but barely ever the prequels. Well apart the blood elves, spiky or oversized shoulder pads and inquisitors with skulls all around: mostly everything I'm concerned about...
OK Deewe, my answers to your post are in GREEN above. I got rid of the previous text since it didn't really apply.
Deewe, I find it kind of funny exactly how much of my counter arguments to your OP you had to edit out to support your own counter arguments to me. Up until then I was actually enjoying our discussion and thought something good *might* come out of it. However, when you have to have to edit someone else's post to make your own arguments it shows me that you are not interested in an actual discussion. It also shows that only your opinion matters to you, instead of trying to see other peoples points of view. To be honest, you had actually convinced me with your arguments about the plastic wookie texture/colors and I applaud you for that. Unfortunately, you have also convinced me as well, by editting out some of the "meat" of my own posts, that the only thing you are worried about is winning an argument, not having a discussion. With that being said I think I am done discussing this with you.

Okay, better example: Faces.
KOTOR
TOR
Now doesn't that seem like a step back? This is 2011. I'm sorry, but the graphics as they stand now, are incredibly cheaply made. There is no reason why they couldn't go for Mass Effect at least concerning model detail, considering that game runs just fine on even older systems.
Man i love this thread. Its just pages and pages of fuss. Always makes me laugh.
Groovy.
Is ToR going to be good? Dude it's Bioware making a freaking star wars game, all signs point to awesome. -G4tv MMo report.
"If half of what you tell me is a lie, how can I believe any of it?"
Quit spoiling my childhood memories! :P
On Topic: I like the graphics/style so not an issue for me.
Gdemami -
Informing people about your thoughts and impressions is not a review, it's a blog.
There Is Always Hope!
I don't know what everyone's complaining about! These in-game graphics look amazingly detailed and realistic:
Always read the small print.
These are the CGI trailers, not in game footage.
Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.
Is ToR going to be good? Dude it's Bioware making a freaking star wars game, all signs point to awesome. -G4tv MMo report.

"If half of what you tell me is a lie, how can I believe any of it?"

So the graphics don't sux but some of them don't really fit a SW lore.
My only input to this is this:

Awesome vid
Expect a game that will be fun to play and has an enjoyable story and I think you won't be disappointed. Expect perfection and you most certainly will be.
Well i didnt mean it literally perfect but every game that has Bioware name on it is pure gold so i expect SWTOR to be gold too.
Awesome vid
