I love it. No matter what, WoW is always hated on in some fashion. It[object Window]s like you were wronged by WoW personally or your family was robbed and left with nothing (for those [object Window]smart[object Window] enough to say WoW robbed you of 15 a month, you[object Window]re idiots, haha).
People who don[object Window]t think WoW should be on this list are right in some senses, there wasn[object Window]t a lot of noticeable improvement in game-play and mechanics...DPS still does DPS, healers heal (though different mechanics). However, there was A LOT of improvement. They did a complete graphic overhaul of the old zones (now newly reformed), added DX11 support (which can substantially improve performance), added new content, and added new combat mechanics and stats to try and introduce new styles of secondary stats available (and many other things you may not know about). Besides the obvious revamp of the zones and changes to them, they continuously keep up with the newest hardware and software. If you want some facts, there was a nice test done recently with graphics and processors (mainly linking for the Direct X info) at http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/world-of-warcraft-cataclysm-directx-11-performance,2793.html (a lot of this is testing with different hardware and irrelevant, just interesting!)
WoW haters and people who claim to not be WoW haters yet hate on WoW...well, do a little research. If you know this stuff then maybe you just don[object Window]t understand what a graphic overhaul entails (not sure I do either...oh well). Granted, I don[object Window]t know much about the other games, but I[object Window]m not going to bash them because I[object Window]m a hater...I[object Window]ll just defend/praise a game I know about. And I don[object Window]t even play it anymore...yet...haha. Enjoy your games. That[object Window]s all.
[object Window]
I don[object Window]t hate on wow, I played it for 4+ years but i do think there has been more improvments in DDO then wow over the last year. It[object Window]s kinda sad that the only time this site mentions DDO it[object Window]s to say it changed the f2p model. they are constantly adding new content to ddo, they are tweaking the UI, adding ways to customize your armor look in the next update due soon, So it[object Window]s not that i don[object Window]t like wow, it[object Window]s that i am tired of wow this and wow that when it really hasn[object Window]t done that much to change,
Not a great list at all. From my experience I would vote AION because of the fact that they are FINALLY listening to the western players and the game is enjoyable now.
Where's Global Agenda? They launched and have since put out several major patches, introduced raids, increased the number of maps, added lots of new equipment/pets/etc. They also overhauled the AvA, which was the flagship portion of their title - all to appease their fans. They actually LISTEN to their community.
Umm I was thinking TF2 should be on the list myself.
As much as I love the genre none of the listed did any thing for me in 2010 or 2009 for that matter. EQ2s UI looks better than it has; LotRo introduced a few new features I think it was in 2010 may have been 2009 but nothing to write home about. Honistly MMOs have lost me over the past few years. I am looking forward to Rift it looks to be a good game of course lots of MMOs looked to be good and where worth the cost of the box but not a sub. WoW changed a lot granted and I think they did good with some of the changes I have seen thus far but over all still not doing it for me; over the last year have become reaquanted with RPG, adventure, FPS and RTS games since my prefered genere of MMOxxx has left me wanting sorly
I'm not a fan of the game but would agree that it at least deserves a nomination as Aventurine has put a lto of effor tinto improving the game this year.
I am playing Darkfall, only game I am subbed to.
But it is not very HIGHLY interesting, because it is Very hardcore, full loot, Grind, sandbox, everything player driven.
Like Eve, but then you got the FPS twitch, and the 100's of spells to keep up with, can get overwhelming and drive people away, unless they want a real real challenge.
Which is why DFO have people come back, and have so many dedicated followers, because at the moment, there is nothing out there for us.
Come on Devs, give us a Hardcore game, full loot, FPS combat, Conquest!
you are confusing "very hardcore" with "lack of content"
I was an avid follower of the game pre-release. Was there from the beta days.
However two things killed it for me:
1. The lack of content. The game has great PvP, but then again, there is nothing else to do besides PvP. There is no other means to interact other than PvP. Poor chat system. Leaving little to no opportunity to socialise
2. Lack of a skill-cap/decay.
Neither point alone would hold any weight on it's own. However, DF is a highly competitive mmo hence one cannot afford not to keep up to standards. But because there is no skill cap there is no limit to how many traits can be max'd out. Which leaves the casual player with a daunting grind.
But maybe I'm being a bit biased as I had held a lot higher expectations for this game ...
players of STO and AoC are extremely lucky in that they are investing on a game being developed by people who's genuine intention is to give their customers best immersion experience as possible and not entirely driven by $ monamona mona... MONAY! $
Very high return of investment ROI which should be recognized more but STO tricky start rebuilding reputation is very difficult but possible.
What these two games need a more powerful PR team. Such as Turbine who's putting a lot of effort advertising Lord of the Rings Online. Every gaming website or Tech shit i visit i see Lord of the Rings Online banner left, right and center.
Again, Im very impressed with the flow of improvements + content released by these two small companies. Its almost 2x as much quality stuff compared to larger competition(turbine) or WoW which is taking in 2x more $$$ from f2p+Subs profits but slow releasing stuff AND they have a bigger Dev team!
STO is improving each quarter just like AoC.
Those two games deserved a New and Complete second look.
Most improved MMO of 2010 has to be from hard working people handling these games.
players of STO and AoC are extremely lucky in that they are investing on a game being developed by people who's genuine intention is to give their customers best immersion experience as possible and not entirely driven by $ monamona mona... MONAY! $
I am not gonna say that STO hasn't improved a lot but do we talk about the same Cryptic? The cryptic I know released STO a year too early out of greed and have genuine RMT shops in their P2P games. I mean they are worse than Smed, even he knows that you can't have things that actually matters in the cash shop.
Sorry but I am checking so my wallet still is there after shaking hands with anyone from Cryptic.
STO and AoC for that matter is greatly improved because they launched in so bad shape, like Vanguard. They should have been this good already at launch.
Great for the people playing the games but there is a lot of people who never will start play them because of some really bad launches.
Darkfall was a FAILED. Waited years for it to come out, gave up and said fok it. Went back to EQ then DOAC and WOW. You think Darkfall is hardcore try EVERQUEST 1 with its millions of dungeons, races, classes, skills, ... compare at Allakhazam.com.
EVE is a FAILED. Lack of explorable space station and planets. Logging in to play with a bunch of wussies who do nothing more than - log in , set skills, log off - isn't my idea of MMO!
CoH was bland compared to EverQuest and WoW, the gameplay just sucked and everyone thought WoW was for kids...then CoH is for babies.
SWG? That's a joke...should of had Light Speed along with it AT LAUNCH!
Aion's a joke...ever heard of "...the carrot in front of the mule.." Aion let's the mule die. Loot drop in this game is a joke and I haven't even mentioned that word that someone already mentioned in their post...GANKFEST.
AoC was failed.
DDO failed because it's more lobby based than real world, open world mmo. DDO failed because subscription packages per dungeon areas and yes I played at release and even subscribed 6mos pre-paid. I am biased against any mmo that is lobby based..aka Global Agenda too.
LoTR - FREE = FAILED. Subscription based to open areas?...LAME graphics, lame game play....maybe if it came out just after Everquest - the game might have worked.
Vanguard FAILED at release due to bugs, lags, falling through the world 10000000x per day. Vanguard FAILED with patches and expansions- NERFING loots and mob drops...Bind on loot = FAILED in any mmo.
The reason why most MMO suck and are not on the list is simple...they FAILED at release and now that they are finally playable (what was expected at launch) after tons of patches and updates, they are not considered most imroved...they are finally playableS.
EverQuest 1 never got the recognition it deserved but as far as most improved I'd say EVERQUEST 1 is the one. You want hardcore and variety = EQ 1.
I voted WOW, I loved the game when it was released, I loved the 99% changes to the world in Cataclysm, and all the classes and races are great.
I cancelled my 2 WoW accounts after I got suspended 3 days for (ROLEPLAYING with my Dwarf Priest) : "Any boys and girls out there want to confessed to this priest?"
Cancelled my 2 accounts, took my 3 brothers (another 3 accts), and 2 friends (another 2 accts) and went back to good old hardcore EQ1.
Said FOK WOW and never went back. Them kids played that gme, kids that swore and cuss up a storm but never got suspended.
Talk about re-hashed...Even FFXI's game play was better! What's the difference between these two? NOTHING.
ALL the Final Fantasy series? Great but outdated.
At this rate they might as well close shop and call it quits.
Stupid MMO's (Lazy ARSE mmos) = lack of jumping, swimming,/drowning, bounded in by edges, cliffs, drop offs - meaning you can not walk off any edge, ledge and drop...AHEM Final Fantasy and the majority of ASIAN mmos.
EQ2 FAILED - too many DARN restrictions at launch. Death from crafting also = FAILED.
I agree with you though on RIFT - it does look very interesting, so does Guild Wars 2.I do like the fact that GW2 is no longer lobby based like GW1 and that you pay only once...for the box.
(Biased - lobby based mmo are NOT mmos )
Blade-n-Soul and TERA online looks great but from what I've seen so far they look too twitchy.
I might have voted for AION 3.0 had it released already.

To answer you top question..... then NO, we're not talking about the same thing... Actually I wasnt even referring to Crytic at all. I take it that you didnt read the entire post or even the 2nd paragraph. In which I commented that Turbine who's doing the killing. Cryptics shop is like juvenile petty theft while Turbine's store is to robbing US Federal Reserve.
Read my post above. It's an overhaul. If that's not improvement, then please describe what improvement means. WoW didn't have a rocky start I guess, but you can consider the graphics themselves just...not good, so that aspect was (and will always be) rocky. I cannot count how many kids complain how cartoony WoW is, and yet hearing an experimental DX11 support and such doesn't get any attention. But with the improvements to those graphics and many other things, it's still improved. Let's not nitpick on the phrases used by the description, whether it had a rocky start or not, a game can improve. I wish someone would post details on some other game improvements done so I can compare and vote, or compile the ones listed. I'm too lazy.
I don't have to explain what "improvement" means. It's clearly stated in the title paragraph of the column:
These are the games that got off to a rocky start but made steady and wanted improvements due to the diligence of the development team.
Only mmo i played this year, and after a long year break when back seen alot of new content and really enjoyed my time in Kithai and T3. Good luck for destiny in Tier 4.
LoooL they used the screenshot of my char on the Aion article!... Nice.. besides I voted aion and so would you if you've played it before and after the expansion!
Comments
SUBJECT/ not my favorite Mmo but the most improved in 2010.
Most improved in 2010:
1° world of warcraft
2° Aion
3° STO
Cataclysm is very impressive (i mean not only the addon but all the changes made by Blizzard)
-------------------------------------------
(My favorite MMO are: 1°DAOC, 2° Lotro, 3° Vanguard)

SKYeXile
TRF - GM - GW2, PS2, WAR, AION, Rift, WoW, WOT....etc...
Future Crew - High Council. Planetside 1 & 2.
Do think AOC deserves this one. A bit too late im afraid, but AOC is now the game that it should have been at the launch.

Once again, no Darkfall. I shouldn't be surprised anymore.
vote sto

Aion and AOC - Was crap, still crap.
EVE with tyranis - I vote for most useless expansion ever (but it's atleast free...)
CoH - Never played it.
So cataclysm gets my vote

Oh yes, I forgot one thing,

Dark fall...something out of the 80's?
J/K - Darkfall failed.
1) WoW
2) AoC
I think STO should be on this list, and would've been my vote. The progress they've made since release is amazing.
Yes all those games had really rocky starts.
SIGH!!!
Star Trek: Online should be an option...
I voted for WoW. The game is a lot more fun now.
I don't have to explain what "improvement" means. It's clearly stated in the title paragraph of the column:

None of the above!
DDO really improved - they have been putting out new modules, new gear, events - sooo much quicker since going F2P. Hands down the winner!
<p align=center><a target=_blank href=http://www.nodiatis.com/personality.htm><img border=0 src=http://www.nodiatis.com/pub/20.jpg></a></p>
voted for Age of Conan
