All that was meant by the quote in the interview was that DMO would have a shallow learning curve, that it would not be prohibitive to new players much the same way as WoW.

Yup, but you know how haters are, take something twist it and try to enflame people.

Its nice to see a mass of rational posts though.

for all you idiots that think they know absolutely everything about the game when barely anything has even been released, Gamesworkshop oversees everything they do and if GW doesnt like the idea then it doesnt get implemented.

I agree GW is very protective of their IP. I actually like that Vigil has been very secretive with DMO. Any idea or concept that is released through the press is an opportunity for 'other established mmos" to copy.

As much I would like to know whats going on with DMO, I prefer this "keep it in the low approach" than the overhyped WAR approach which resulted on many fans dissapoinment.

The general 'non-surveyed' idea I have got from talking to players is that many fantasy players dont want to play a futuristic game. Fantasy also seems more popular. While WH40K does have fantasy elements, it is still essentially a gun toting futuristic game.

While I would not be suprised if WH40K gets plenty of subscribers, I would be suprised if many come from WoW.

  • fansedefansede Member UncommonPosts: 960

I sense GW is really trying to make sure any game they endorse or deal with does stick to their canon. EA/Mythic apparently had to work to get new mmo classes like Zealot approved.

That being said, if you sink millions into a game, and you seen how WoW makes billions. It is hard to stray from that model..

Except for obvious reasons like "majority of those players are chieldren, who prefer fantasy" - tthere are many people who don't want to play a fantasy game, especially seein how many around these days and no decent sci-fi.

But in the end normal* mmo players mostly care about combat mechanics and gameplay, so be it fantasy or sci-fi - as long as it got decent PVP it will do.

Warhammer 40k universe is unique in that it's almost like fantasy but everything in it feels sci-fi like, most of the "magic" is explained and have strict rules of how it works etc. so it's best of both worlds

I guess fantasy lovers will play as Chaos and sci-fi fans will play Imperium so both will have a good reason to hate each other image

Would be a perfect free for all sandbox pvp game.  However, it will be a kill 10 (space) wolf quest game instead.  Yuck.

Wrong, you are a product of your parents. School... go there, you learn things. (sometimes).

How can you act so smart, yet miss the sarcasm in the hyperbole? Settle down, little guy. It will be ok.

The issue was the gross overuse of the word "clone" around here. If I didn't have some fundamental understanding of "clone" I can google it like the next guy, and I used the term in the same context it was used to which I replied.

Don't get your panties in a bunch.

"levels" in and of themselves dont make a game suck by any possibly means, it makes a game maybe to not your taste, but that is entirely subjective.

To say ou wouldnt play it before we even know very much (or almost nothing) about the game is your choice, but i think the nerd rage on this forum is pretty hilarious.

Reminds me of people who hated the LoTR movies becuase they didnt follow the books exactly.

If you truly loved 40k you would deny what companies have been doing with it (With the exception of the dawn of war series and the last one "Space Marine" but they are made by other company)

But no problem, play your 2 faction game I can already guess what the faction will be, Imperium + Eldar vs Orks + Chaos

Have the Eldar allied with the Imperium before? nope, truces had been made, but an alliance? please

And if the chapter is the Black Templars, an alliance would be like burning every single piece of lore ever made by GW, as the black templars would never make a truce with xenos, nonetheless an alliance

Tainted Orks? could work, but how the Orks would be an indepedent race in the game then? They would be under control of chaos anyway...

Dont get me wrong, I want a 40k mmo, but one made for 40k fans and not randomly casual ex-wow players

An alliance does not imply that the races involved love eachother. It just means they are working together for the time being. Probably because they need to in order to survive. When the alliance is no longer needed, they might go back to fighting eachother. It makes more sense for imperium and eldar to form this kind of alliance than any other combo. But this is nothing new.

What if.. And bare with me on this.. What if this game is simply trying to use a formula that has been proven to work? Whatever you accredit World of Warcraft's success toward there is no denying they have/are doing something right to have racked up as much subscribers as they have now.

If you look at it from a business perspective:

Would you rather trust in a method that has shown time and time again to bring in profit?

    Or...

Would you trust in something new that could possibly create a massive lost in money?

Not too much is even known about the game yet; definitely not enough to start slamming it into the ground as if everyone has been playing it for months. I say give the game a chance and just see what happens; that doesn't sound too bad to me.

Let's not judge too harshly way before closed/open beta... But then again they say the beta is a completely different game.

orcs dont ally with anyone, the only reason the orcs havent already over run the universe is theyre too buisy fighting each other to be bothered with wiping out everyone else.  should the orcish waaaaagh ever be fully united under 1 warboss, there wouldnt be a force in all the cosmos that could stem the green tide.

You talk blasphemy, heretic! The green menace shall be crushed as any other threat posed to the Imperium, the Emperor-God shall see to it and we, the Space Marines, fear incarnate, shall deliver his divine will !

As I have said before DMO = Eye of Terror online. Its all been in the game before and it will again.

The one thing that baffles me is the selection of black templar... like everyone else. But if the inquisition tells them that they will do something, they have no choice. doesnt mean they have to like it, but they will have to comply.

I grow weary of the perpetual lament that every major game is a WoW clone.  Its like ppl are just trying to find reasons not to like games.  Does it have quest/quest hubs, multiple races, a GUI where you use abilities... my god its a WoW clone.  What were the clones prior to WoW.  Maybe no games existed in the firmerment and the world was devoid of MMOs.  Who knows.  Enough already.  Most games have quest hubs, multiple races, a GUI for abilities.  Its not unique nor pioneered by WoW.  Mind WoW did an outstanding job back when it came out, and has managed to maintain its status through hard work of its developers and its player base.  Stop hating, and enjoy games for what they are, and not some perceived relation to another game.  If its a WoW clone but fun.... Woot... I have a new fun game.  Its as simple as that.  If you are in fear of playing something that ppl will call a WoW clone, stick to Indie games which seem to have a greater ability to deviate from the classic WoW, Everquest, etc mold.

Sorry for the rant, but it seems that as soon as a major release is announced, it seems to be a race as to who will post the first thread on how its a WoW clone.

I self identify as a monkey.

So, why do you still go "ZOMG i can't wait for this game!" when they release more and more horrible gameplay videos for this game?

For those of you that literally missed it: Linky

[edit]: Just to point out, you are NOT a Warhammer 40k fan, or Warhammer in general, if you're waiting on this game because it's "Warhammer 40k". Warhammer fans are FAR more intelligent than to give money to a company that is trying to COMPLETELY destroy the IP as a whole.

"I've spent lots of time in WoW. As a WoW fanatic, I'm going to go right to 40K as soon as it comes out. It's very friendly to the WoW player," Bilson says

He said its going to be "very friendly to the WoW player". I would say your blowing his statement just a little bit out of proportion. Give me a break. WoW is a casual friendly MMO,  and the devs are hoping to create something equally accessible so they can get some of that much coveted market share...Relax.

So, as a fire warrior, I will be able to trade my BoE Bright Lance to a space marine friend that wants to respec as a devastator. I will exchange it with an Iron Halo, so I can enchant my headpiece.

You are right, I can't think why Warhammer fans will hate the game.

I agree with the OP, completely indifferent about this game at the moment. There is still lots of time for that to change however.

Ive been a GW fan for a long long time (I remember when the company started....)

THe only constant in Warhammer and 40k is that lore changes.... They change lore to sell minis and army books. So If things gent bent a bit in a MMO its not a huge deal to me.

There are going to be some huge changes coming in 40k (The Emperor is going to die)

You'll spend years trying to educate the ignorant masses of this fact, unfortunately. And nobody will listen because dates are TL;DR.

Warhammer Fantasy Battle (Tabletop game from Games Workshop) came out in 1983. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warhammer_Fantasy_Battle

Warcraft: Orcs & Humans (RTS video game, otherwise known as "WarCraft 1", from Blizzard) came out in 1994. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warcraft

(Hint, the very first WarCraft came out 11 years after Warhammer)

Warhammer 40,000 (Sci-fi adaptation of Warhammer Fantasy Battle, from Games Workshop) came out in 1987. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warhammer_40,000

StarCraft (RTS video game, from Blizzard) came out in 1998. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/StarCraft

(Hint, the very first StarCraft came out 11 years after Warhammer 40,000)

So why, you ask, would anyone who understands chronology, dates, or even basic numbers think that Warhammer is somehow a Warcraft ripoff?

Most of these people, I imagine, would have encountered WarCraft as a video game before they encountered Warhammer as a tabletop game. I am in this category, as I played WarCraft II long long long before I even heard of Warhammer. But I'm not an idiot who thinks that my own experience and exposure to things dictates their existence in the universe.

P.S. What's so special about 11 years, Blizzard? We know that ~10 years is your particular development cycle for a game (see StarCraft II)....hmmm....

Currently playing: LOTRO, Guild Wars 2.
Have played: EVE Online; Champions Online; Age of Conan; City of Heroes/Villains; Star Wars Galaxies (pre-CU, pre-NGE); World of Warcraft (Vanilla to Cataclysm); Hellgate: London; Warhammer Online; Lord of the Rings Online; Vanguard: Saga of Heroes; Star Wars: The Old Republic
    Wishlist: Mass Effect Online

Umm, from the video I watched it didn't seem SO much like WoW.. But even so, let's take a step back and ask ourselves something..

What else would work in America? The "future" is here and it brought with it millions of players, no company from this day forward will neglect to realize that.. They don't look to games like Everquest and Ultima as pioneers of the industry, they look to Blizzard and WoW because of the amount of players it has amassed.. WoW is the image of "success" in the industry..

And we have already walked the road of change before, and players like us continue to destroy companies who actually try something different and risk it all doing so.. Even small indie developers get smashed by the followers of the mainstream. Look at Runes of Magic.. An absolutely OBVIOUS tick from WoW, the developers even said what their intentions were in an interview and look at the status of that game.. From a F2P standpoint.. HUUGE.. Probably the second highest revenue generating F2P game other than Maplestory..

Basically WoW has become a template, and companies will apply any different skin or texture available to create and sell us more of what we "want"..

No we ALL don't want it, but I think the millions of people playing WoW and paying Blizzard make a stronger statement..
