I'm really looking forward to some official details on this new time-locked progression server. I am a little worried it will be nothing more then new EQ locked down to the original areas. Will there be an auction house? Fast travel? Easy exp? Mercs? Revamped areas?
I will not go back to EQ unless it plays like it did in 1999 (with the exception of medding in your spellbook to lv 35, that crap they can get rid of).
Already did this twice and it was OK but freakin morons kept rushing through the progression to Luclin and the game started to suck again. They should just make a damn pre-Luclin server and forget the progression crap completely. That I would play but I think I'll give this progression crap a miss this time around.
Bren
That's why it's time-locked this time, so expansions will open up on a set time, rather than like before where uber guilds dictated when expansions will open.
I never played origional EQ.. but im curious about this server. I am an oldschool UO player and never played much EQ. I guess ill wait until I see more details.
Oooh I love the idea of an EQ2 server with EQ1 ruleset I would definitely resub for that. I don't think I will pay a monthly fee for EQ1 again however as I am allready playing casually on P1999 server and loving it. That and the fact that RIFT launches right about that same time and I have allready pre-ordered and subbed for 3 months after. I will check in every now and again to see how its going though. Man CB trains are soooo much fun!

I did the beta test and went right back to UO. . I remember playing a guy. . killing some creatures over and over and gaining a level. I started to feel an addiction coming on. Then I thought about how many of those creatures I had to kill and that the next level I had to kill more of them. I had no idea I was looking at the start of level grinding at the time
I might give it a shot though just to see. Games like Darfall, MO, SWG, UO etc have spoiled me though, despite some bad implementation I don't think I can go back to a game with levels.
Probally not me, I tried EQ1 not to long ago and found the game annoying as hell to play, everything about the UI and controls seemed to have been contrived to be as annoying and non-user friendly as humanly possible. Needless to say I didn't play it for long.
If you want a grind there is tons of free to play korean0devved mmorpgs out there that can give you that. Can't say they'd be as good as EQ though heh.
"An MMORPG could be completely diffirent from WoW. Just look at games like Dofus, Wizard101 or EVE. But as it is, most of the Western MMOs are trying to succeed by out-WoWing WoW. It's like an army of 10 sports games made about same sports, and barely none about other sports. WoW clone is an accurate description of those games, it manages to convey much information with only two words." -Poster on mmorpg.com

I think its an amazing idea. I stopped playing EQ 7 years ago. I wasnt around for the very beginning. I joined right before Velious came out. With the time lock, this is gonna get my buck. You can buy all the expansions released up til now on Amazon for 20 bucks too. My main hope is at least 2 - 3 months are given to each of the first 3 expansions. After that I could care less what the time line is.
Just to question the philosophy. Army of Socrates.
Oh Everquest. Yon Norrath first introduced the King to a hobby that has widdled away many important hours from his most precious days.
I would love to give this a try, but I cannot for the life of me take a step backwards; when I am most graciously hoping for something to come along soon and carry me many steps forward.
She shall be a most prized mistress of mine, but I long for something a little less... 1999.

Certainly the UI is annoying. The grind is better than it used to be (and it isn't a grind to everyone).
What early expansions of EQ have going for it though is some of the most varied combat dynamics of any MMO on the market. The holy trinity was a lie created by the player base. You could pretty much fill your group with any combination of players and have at it (out side of raids).
Forever looking for employment. Life is rather dull without it.

Indeed. A well geared pair of rogues could ping pong a mob whilst a decent healer had to pay attention and a good crowd controller kept things nice and calm.
Oh a many a' good nights at the Lake of Ill Omens stabbing gobbilty tounged goblins in the back.
Hmm, you citizens may be making this King weigh a heavy option on his brow...
I want to play for sure. But, as others have stated, it will depend on which parts of the original they include and which they don't. I also want info on the subscription model and the cost to purchase the game. If I have to buy all current expansions just to play on the progression server, I hope I can find an all-in-one package for a decent price.
There is an all-inclusive package right now on sale from Amazon. It includes 30 days of free gameplay for a new account.
..and for SURE am I going to be in-game on the launch day!
First character? Hmm.. I am tossing between Druid, Mage, Wizard or Enchanter. Whatever it is I will start in GFay. There's nothing like listening to people asking for help when they get lost in the trees (especially at night time) trying to get back to their group, or the "Train to Orc Lift!!" (and if you are at Orc Lift, scrambling out of the way), etc. Good times.
Has anyone seen a good FAQ on the progression server? There are a lot of questions I would like to have answered.
Currently the community is waiting for an announcement regarding details on the new server. Something was slated to be posted on the 12th, but they are a bit overdue.
I've included discussion threads from the official forums throughout this thread, so you should be able to glean a decent amount of information there (as much as anyone knows to date).
EQ1 and Vanguard are up there as my favorite MMOs. EQ1 was my first. I started during the Velious expansion so it would be great to check out all the old world dungeons that I bypassed. If only this had come out six months ago I'd be hooked again, but I just reserved Rift. If Rift flops I'll definitely be back, probably with a Shaman.
Oh I so wish it's a 1999 reboot (as such) I would be back in a flash,
if as others have said its just zone specific , ie all new content is in like loot and such just not exapnsions zones until time based then I wont be playing. This is a perfect time for sony to give what we have always asked for, a 99 reboot, will they deliver? hmm
I must say im intrigued by the idea. I stopped playing back in 2004, just after the OOW expansion and havent been back since. For me it would really depend on the ruleset of the server. I dont think we need to revisit the whole hell levels, spell book medding and spells every four levels thing they had back then. Some classes were pretty poor back then aswell, ranger and SK's come to mind, will they be the original or balanced versions? A lot of questions, hopefully they will release a comprehensive faq soon.
Its been a long time and my memorys are no doubt heavily rose tinted - but I havent found a game since that relies quite so much on specific class roles in a group. EQ2 and VG were both in the same vein, it seems to be less and less so these days and I see little in the current crop of games really focusing on grouping and class's roles within a group.
That said the actual graphics and UI may well turn out to be such a shock for me ill never be able to get back into it these days. If i was happily playing a current MMO id probably never consider it, theres just seemingly nothing on the market for me right now.
"I dont think we need to revisit the whole hell levels, spell book medding and spells every four levels thing they had back then"
You see I differ on this, I long for them back as this made it mean something when finaly made it to top lvl, you worked for it. Seems a tad strange to want an old school mmo back but with modern (wow) easy for kids ruleset.
I have always wanted to try EQ out, i see people talking about places and even items that i recognize from EQOA, like the Rubicite armor in CT. that stuff was removed from EQOA drops and i think they made no trade lore to those that already had it. Along with the 2 horned ripper (2 handed sword caster only), Cerimonial vestments (all/all white robe), spectre robe (all/all black robe) among other items that no longer drop in eqoa.
does EQ have an Alchemist class like EQOA? leather wearing claster that throws potions to do dmg?
I'm seriously debating it. haven't had any mmo sink it's teeth into me the way eq did. I just jumped into a project for classic eq nostalgia and I really think I'm down for the new official progression server if it's definately timed release and not a joke like the last uberguild trophy hunting progression server experiment soe did.
Grouping in Old school mmo's: meeting someone at the bar and chatting, getting to know them before jumping into bed. Current mmo's grouping: tinder. swipe, hookup, hope you don't get herpes, never see them again.

Just my opinion
Not sure where in my post i stated i wanted a easy ruleset, bonus points to you for managing to bring WoW into the equation aswell - bravo.
Im really not sure what staring at your spell book medding brought to the game, it was just a badly thought out mechanic from the off - by all means sit down to med, but having a lot of your playtime taken up staring at the spellbook? Apparently hell levels were a bug and were just artificial bumps in the levelling process that really added nothing to the game except sheer frustration - lets face it levelling wasnt exactly brisk as it was and you certainly worked for your levels.
EQ and UO are my favorite games of all time, but I don't know that I want to 'replay' the game, when I already know whats coming and where to camp, and what everything does....Part of original EQ's mystery was that they didn't tell you a lot of stuff and you had to figure quests and other things out for yourself.
I think people will get bored pretty quickly, with a time lock progression, since they will know where the loot is, the camps, strats, and when expansions come out, they will know everything.
I may be down if they did a restart and it was going to be fresh with new unique content, I would be open to that idea.
It's been so long. Loved EQ back in the day. What does EQ have today, compared to newer titles, that justifies $15/month?
it promises exactly the same thing as all the others for that sub... fun (if you find the particular game fun).
Age of the game has nothing to do with it.
Sure it does. You just answered my question, though it wasn't the answer I hoped for. I was watching from the periphery and thinking it would be great to have a modern EQ . Just as if asking what does a 20-year-old car have to offer that justifies the same price as a modern model; "transportation". Okay. I cant see myself paying more for nostalgia.
