Why can't innovative sandbox mmo's launch as polished as Theme parks? Is it the risk involved in making the sandbox or niche mmo that decides its cost? These are obvious questions, but pertain vividly to this genre.
Its because when a sandbox is made, post UO, its not supported by those who want a sandbox.
Some game types have a proven track record of making the big money, others dont, guess which one are brining in the big investment and racking in the money?
This is why, untill we see a big hit sandbox, they will continue to be low budget productions by indy or small gaming companies.
All it takes is one big hit however....
Mabey those who are so supportive of sandboxes in forums should subscribe to one already out, and possibly overlook the lack of polish and minor attractions and convieniences left out?

Big hit sandbox is the key - I agree. Looks around for a Dark Age of Camelot 2 (I dream lol)
Hmm do you also go to Toaster lover forums and constantly repeat your opinions of a certain Toaster in any thread remotely related like many people do for games in these forums?I'm tlaking aobut both sides of the coin here not jsut positive or negative opinions.
I'll answer your question when you ask one that makes sense. I played the stress test today, which actually went very well compared to other stress tests I have played through before. I am talking about Rifts not some "other" game. I've been playing Rift for a number of weeks too so I certainly know enough about this game to be talking abotu this game.
The question makes perfect sense I just used your analogy about liking some toasters and not others and applied it to how people behave toward games here.It was worded to include all people who behave this way and did not single you out or indeed accuse you of it whether it is apt or not.

People behave the way they do towards games because they know what they like, and they know what they don't like too. You don't have to be in the creation process to know whether or not you like something or think something is of value. Developers and publishers don't get brownie points for trying so hard and giving it "heart" anymore than other industries do. Your idea that you have to make something of equal or better value to voice an negative opinion is just a sham.
parrotpholk-Because we all know the miracle patch fairy shows up the night before release and sprinkles magic dust on the server to make it allllll better.

Now you seem to be confusing me with someone else I never stated you had to be able to make soemthing to be able to criticize it...or praise it for that matter.I have no problem with people voicing their opinions about games I like or dislike.my issue was with the way people tend to try to use thier opinions here as blunt weapons to bludgeon opposing views with constant repitition in any thread remotely related.
These game got lot of fanboys and i don't know why! in chat channel, they keep arguing RIFT is better than WoW or WAR. i told them "no way" and all the boys will start to attack me......
and they thought the enemy invasion thing is a very good idea but COV / COX had it before, anyone remember alien invasion event? NCsoft is very smart, they ended the event in one month period because they know it will get old real fast. players will get sick and tire of invasion....
oh man, you can played all the way to lv 33? actually at lv 10, you can roughly guess how this game is.....answer? same old "kill these" , "get that" , "talk to this" , "interact this..".
Honestly i just re rolled on another server as i felt myself getting a little bored.. This time i rolled Guardian Inquisitor / Cabalist / Purifer and all was going well till around lv 8.. When i started loseing to mobs in 1v1's that were same level for me.. My bread and butter skills took 2-3seconds to cast, and i had to stand still while doing it.. Makeing the combat extremley boring.. And i noticed it was sort of that way as a rogue too (even tho bard was fun.) Long story short after around 20 cheap deaths i'am calling it quits for beta tonight, ill re-roll a warrior tommarow see if that class is fun.. ATM my biggest problem is the combat is boring as snot, hopefully that changes in the higher lvls and during pvp.
I'am certainly not canceling my preorder just yet, but i'am ALOT less excited about Rift then i was before this beta began.. Might just be best to call it quits on the beta all toghether and just wait for the release 'n see what happens.
Currently Playing: Rift + Starcraft II + Gears Of War 3 Beta

As far as I know, I posted once in this thread to a person that claimed you had to make a game before you could critcize it then you seemed to get a bit unhappy with me about repeating myself for whatever reason.
parrotpholk-Because we all know the miracle patch fairy shows up the night before release and sprinkles magic dust on the server to make it allllll better.
I'm level 33 in that 30/35 zone Scarwood Reach and I'm bored to tears.
The rifts are always the same, the dungeons are pretty boring and the questing is just like WoW. Kill X, Give item A to NPC B. I have done like 200 of those kill quests by now. Jesus.
I have to credit Rift that it was hella cool at around level 14. But at 25-35 it sucks because you've seen it 10000000 times in other MMO already. The zones also become less and less good.
I had this DVD of Disney next to my keyboard and popped it in for some background music, got so bored with Rift I started watching it instead.
Some of yall are going to say that I'm just bored with the genre. I don't think that's the case, I'm bored with the run-a-mill quest MMO that keep copying each other.

Again I just used your Toaster analogy...I never once stated it was directed at you personally...and once again ti was directed at both sides who are equally as guilty and on more thna jsut this game inparticular but every game "discussed" in these forums.A lot of negative reaction stems from this behaviour. But I do agree the poster you responded to's logic is faulty...if what he said was true most professional critics would be out of work.

You're bored of MMOlite games.
That's understandable.
Any reasonable and sane person is.
Some people dont mind, personally i like the standard mmorpg setup, mabey because i never played wow, or a birth defect. But i enjoy it.
However im starting to enjoy rift less and less, and its not becasue its the boring same old.... some else isnt right.
Im calling and endgame disaster in Rift, right here right now.
I got this wierd feeling, over the lack of endgame hype from trion, their six month preorder sub pack, and the more than obvious balancing issues. Balancing issues no one wants to talk about, no one wants to hear about. Balancing issues that were addressed by trion by nerfing all the racial abilities and across the board class nerfs (if you nerf everyone what did you really accomplish?) Or the fact that beta testing will be capped just short of endgame...isnt that something that should be tested at least a little?
Something doesnt jive right about Rift anymore, cant put my finger on it.

Why didn't you pick up WoW?
You can answer that outloud if you like, no need to type a response. Because all of those reasons should apply to RIFT as well since it's just another CTRL-C CTRL-V MMOlite 'eh'. How many of these ehs have came around with a cool gimmick? Plenty, plenty plenty, many, most. Why aren't you playing those? Can't put your finger on it?
You're smarter than that, the King declares it so!

Well during wow's hey day i was playing anarchy online, believe me i tried to get into wow, rarely made it past the trial, i think i subbed for mabey a month in vanilla. By then it was such an established game, and there were other games out there. I dunno, i never could get into wow. I can say from what i saw it was a great gaming engin, and it was supurbly made, but still....could never get into wow, even if i tried. However i still find the same old boring mechanics everyone seems to hate...fun
Those mechanics are tried and true, withstood the test of time, and if they get stale, well no one is holding a gun to my head saying "you must play a mmo" so i take a few months off, or play another type of game. But the same old mechanics of Rift are not whats turning me off from it.....other things are afoot.

Sorry to have caused confusion.
Oh I see. I guess I misunderstood your point too. I am sorry for that. I wasn't really comparing the two products so much as saying, I can't build a toaster myself, but I am perfectly capable of deciding if one works or not. I think a lot of people will like this game because it's going to be a realtively clean release, it's simple and the idea behind it is interesting. Other people will not like it beceause it lacks some depth other games have, it's a little repetetive and the more exciting features, Rifts and Invasions, are so common place that I think it might cheapen the experience. I've been playing for a few weeks now, and while I enjoy the unexpected, they play out very similiarlly each time. I've lost track of how many Rifts I've done, at leat a handful invasions. I probably will not buy the game, but my emotional response to the game isn't really negative so much as just not for me, hope others like it sort of thing.

I think WoW's a greatly made game, I just had to up and quit in 2008 and didn't get that 'itch' like I've gotten with other hobbies of mine. When RIFT came along I was about to level 18 and it hit me HARD. That feeling that there wasn't any substance to wasting of time and effort.
There's going to be a game made for us. One day. Maybe.
Hopefully.
...
A game about a King.
A King who... Is fruit...
Or a Fat Princess MMORPG. That would be awesome.
RIFT's just shell of a clone, everyone uses the term 'standard' if that takes the sting out of it. Then this game is so standard it's painful.

Even though I have pre-ordered the game i do share some of your concerns,as well as some of my own like class balance.I'm hoping that what is shaping up to be a polished and smooth release leads to Trion being able to build upon this solid base as opposed to recent games which the devs spend the first year scrambling to make the game playable and stable.
I have only played a few characters up to low 20s myself despite being in every beta event,I'v emostly been playing with builds and classes and deliberately not seeing too much of the levelling content so as to not burn out when I have to play through it again(Yes I think the lack of mulitple levelling area is a cocern).I've palyed enough to know I enjoy the basic mechanics and since I cannot see the end game content feel no compulsion to level further honestly.

Well, while your avatar screen name and overall RP touch to your posts crack me up, i think we are very diffrent in regards to games.
Im not looking for a specific criteria in a game, in order for me to enjoy it. I can enjoy just about any game for what it is, not for what it isnt.
The boring and stale mechanics you seem to scoff at, well i actually enjoy them, i also enjoy sandboxes. I have managed to like a lot of game that were hated...i loved AoC, i like warhammer, i enjoyed darkfall. but this isnt about those games, this is about rift.
I was saying there was something i couldnt put my finger on, some wrong with rift. Im starting to think, aside from the points i mentioned about endgame and major balancing issues, that its the community as a whole. Now mabey this is where my inexpereience with wow gets the best of me. Im not trying to insult or anything, i have nothing against the community...it just seems like they are all zombies....
Like i said, major balance issues brewing, a lack of endgame exposure and discussion, and an overall unwillingness of the community to really...well they seem like zombies....not real...for show....
Perhaps this is the wow community that i have little experience with, but im adding up a lot of strange occurances in game and related to the community as a whole.
Lets just say this is unlike any beta test i have ever participated in, and im not sure what to make of it. I see a lot of issues forming with rift and its endgame. but the attitude, rather than, lets try to fix it, or discuss is..is hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil...its strange for me.

gives me the willies
Umm you do know the end game, and those that know what it really is, are all Alpha testers right? And as Alpha testers they are still under a NDA. So if your expecting anyone to come out and tell you about these supposed issues you THINK you see forming with the endgame (which you dont know anything about), well I wouldnt count on it.
The community you think are zombies, they just aren't discussing what they dont know anything about. I suppose they could be like some people here and guess, then discuss thier guesses like they are facts and all. Would that make them less zombies for you?

This kind of compliments my train of thought, thank you for highlighting my strange feelings towards the community.

In all fairness, this industry has earned the response of gamers typically being skeptical, cynical or just not willing to give the benefit of the doubt anymore. Just look at a number of PC releases this past year, not even talking MMO only.
parrotpholk-Because we all know the miracle patch fairy shows up the night before release and sprinkles magic dust on the server to make it allllll better.

Huh, I think you got a point. See when I enjoyed WoW the most the King was on a dial up connection, yeah the game worked well enough for questing and small group content. Could even on a good night go into a capture the flag game and have a blast.
Then the King excitedly upgraded his connection speed to epic.
Only to have the forest of WoW shoved back enough to see all of its trees.
Those trees were pipe-hitting idiots playing in the same video game as me. They lived it, breathed it, this and that is. Shoved remote controls up their rectums for it (True story, vid on the net. Where everything is true.)
See I'll merrily admit the game isn't as polished as anyone is willing to say. I was a beta tester, I was sending back feedback and I happened to make the mistake of going into the general chat 1-9 and asked if anyone could duplicate the problem. LO! The King got pumbled by retardation. The thought of there being a problem with RIFT was enough to send a dozen people after me.
They were promptly set in to place.
But yeah, I dub thee a wise vizer of the highest order.
Those people are crazy and I hope the game can keep its servers going to keep the haphazard half-wits all congrigated and corrgulated in the same place for a very long time to come.

Oh man.
The King just laughed so hard he woke up people.
But that's okay, I'm the King. I can do this.
This went as follows.
"Yeah I can deal with the mechanics, kind of worried about end-game, the people are nuts."
Nut-job "YOU PHSYCIC?! WAT U NO BOUT ENGAMED!? U WORK @ TREEON?"
im confused, is this a thread on how rift has the same kill this, get that, blah blah blah or that EVERY PvE MMO to date has... i have an eq2 account and it repeats the same damned quests in the game itself. just change the name of mob or item you need to get. i havent played a single pve mmo INCLUDING eve that didnt have the same damned quest... so again im confused. what's all the complaining about?

Sounds like lots of folks want something other than mindless killing I guess. But yeah, the quests in Rift aren't any different than all of the other mmos out there. So if they are complaining about that then they should be complaining against the industry standard.

There are ways to disguise the monotony of the quests, Rift doesnt try. A zone consists of 20 "fields", each field contains a different type of mob. There is one kill quest for every mob. There is one click on this quest for every field. If you see a different type of mob in the field next to the one you are questing in, you know that fairly soon you will receive a quest to go kill them.

Which FF Character Are You?
Currently Playing:
Rift + Starcraft II + Gears Of War 3 Beta
As far as I know, I posted once in this thread to a person that claimed you had to make a game before you could critcize it then you seemed to get a bit unhappy with me about repeating myself for whatever reason.
parrotpholk-Because we all know the miracle patch fairy shows up the night before release and sprinkles magic dust on the server to make it allllll better.
You're bored of MMOlite games.
That's understandable.
[mod edit]
Again I just used your Toaster analogy...I never once stated it was directed at you personally...and once again ti was directed at both sides who are equally as guilty and on more thna jsut this game inparticular but every game "discussed" in these forums.A lot of negative reaction stems from this behaviour. But I do agree the poster you responded to's logic is faulty...if what he said was true most professional critics would be out of work.
I guess if anything I guess I took exception to your use of liking a toaster or not as an analogy to liking a MMORPG or not and the subsequent behaviour exhibited in these forums based on such likes and dislikes.
Sorry to have caused confusion.
