There are ways to disguise the monotony of the quests, Rift doesnt try. A zone consists of 20 "fields", each field contains a different type of mob. There is one kill quest for every mob. There is one click on this quest for every field. If you see a different type of mob in the field next to the one you are questing in, you know that fairly soon you will receive a quest to go kill them.
How would you disguise the monotony of the quests?
I think WoW's a greatly made game, I just had to up and quit in 2008 and didn't get that 'itch' like I've gotten with other hobbies of mine. When RIFT came along I was about to level 18 and it hit me HARD. That feeling that there wasn't any substance to wasting of time and effort.
There's going to be a game made for us. One day. Maybe.
Hopefully.
...
A game about a King.
A King who... Is fruit...
Or a Fat Princess MMORPG. That would be awesome.
RIFT's just shell of a clone, everyone uses the term 'standard' if that takes the sting out of it. Then this game is so standard it's painful.
Well, while your avatar screen name and overall RP touch to your posts crack me up, i think we are very diffrent in regards to games.
Im not looking for a specific criteria in a game, in order for me to enjoy it. I can enjoy just about any game for what it is, not for what it isnt.
The boring and stale mechanics you seem to scoff at, well i actually enjoy them, i also enjoy sandboxes. I have managed to like a lot of game that were hated...i loved AoC, i like warhammer, i enjoyed darkfall. but this isnt about those games, this is about rift.
I was saying there was something i couldnt put my finger on, some wrong with rift. Im starting to think, aside from the points i mentioned about endgame and major balancing issues, that its the community as a whole. Now mabey this is where my inexpereience with wow gets the best of me. Im not trying to insult or anything, i have nothing against the community...it just seems like they are all zombies....
Like i said, major balance issues brewing, a lack of endgame exposure and discussion, and an overall unwillingness of the community to really...well they seem like zombies....not real...for show....
Perhaps this is the wow community that i have little experience with, but im adding up a lot of strange occurances in game and related to the community as a whole.
Lets just say this is unlike any beta test i have ever participated in, and im not sure what to make of it. I see a lot of issues forming with rift and its endgame. but the attitude, rather than, lets try to fix it, or discuss is..is hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil...its strange for me.
gives me the willies
Umm you do know the end game, and those that know what it really is, are all Alpha testers right? And as Alpha testers they are still under a NDA. So if your expecting anyone to come out and tell you about these supposed issues you THINK you see forming with the endgame (which you dont know anything about), well I wouldnt count on it.
The community you think are zombies, they just aren't discussing what they dont know anything about. I suppose they could be like some people here and guess, then discuss thier guesses like they are facts and all. Would that make them less zombies for you?
This kind of compliments my train of thought, thank you for highlighting my strange feelings towards the community.
Oh man.
The King just laughed so hard he woke up people.
But that's okay, I'm the King. I can do this.
This went as follows.
"Yeah I can deal with the mechanics, kind of worried about end-game, the people are nuts."
Nut-job "YOU PHSYCIC?! WAT U NO BOUT ENGAMED!? U WORK @ TREEON?"
"See."
The King "Ohhh, you're right."
{Mod edit}
Look, you say a lot, but it doesnt contain a drop of substance, ive seen people banned from this site for much less personal insults as well.
However, it does highlight the rift beta community quite well. Rather that discussing concerns and issues, the people actually testing the game are ridiculed.
Sure balance might be perfect at endgame, but none of us will know that untill well after launch. Is beta not the proper time and place to discuss issues with the content being tested? I guess not.
Dont take it personally when i say the rift beta community is xombie like, because its really more herd like. My issue with how they are acting as a whole, is that once these issues people are having, turn out to not magically dissapear at endgame, what happens? What happens to a herd when they are starteld? They stampede...
What will startle the rift community? will it be a populair and large guild leaving? will it be the realization that some of the issues that are right in front of you during the 1-35 content are actually there from 1-50? Who knows, however its why im am predicting an endgame disaster for Rift. The thing is, is that the comunities expectations cannot possibly be met, as they want both opposite things at the same time.
See the community wants a game that is anything but wow, they say it non stop. However these people are self admitted wow players, its not a big deal and you shouldnt be ashamed of that. However how can you hate a game that you played for so long? You dont. The community seemingly wants a game like wow but also nothing like it, its the topic of every converstation, every... Something is going to give in the rift community, and when it does, its going to be a stampede.
Im sorry you think that my beta testing experience is nothing more than "making shit up" but this isnt my first beta test, and im not in Rfit to lay the framework of my large guild migrating to the game, im not in rift to see which class is best so i can be the best come launch, my reason playing isnt to discover the fastest way to level for some achievement come launch. I am in Rift to help, more or less, make it a better game. I dont like seeing issues in beta make their way to launch, even if i dont play the game. I dont take games personally, i dont wish death upon any game, i hope all games succeed. I worry about rift, not for its solid early game content, or polished mechanics. Im worried of the brewing blancing issues, which are serious, im worried about a secretive endgame that none will publicly test and discuss. Im worried about the communities expectations, and how they will react given anything short of a wild success in every aspect.
Sorry my words make you, and other Rift fans like you, angry...its not my intent. My job was simply to state some issues and possibly have a discussion about them, since in game and on the rift forums is no place to state any issues with the game.....
You lasted longer than I did. I only managed to 24 before I couldn't take it anymore. I realized I kept playing thinking, "It's going to get more interesting. I'm sure of it." But it didn't. Eventually you realize, it's just a video game, it's a waste of time regardless. But if you're going to waste your time, it may as well be on something that makes the hours fly by, instead of something that makes every minute feel like an hour.
More power to the people that enjoy this game, but I don't get the fuss. I'd be shocked and amazed if this game's popularity survives a year.
"Forums aren't for intelligent discussion; they're for blow-hards with unwavering opinions."
A lot of people, including me, enjoy fantasy mmorpgs, along with other types. THe mechanics are tried and tue, having withstood the test of time. Sure it could be a more diffrent game, but its still fun.
I am going to wait the full month after launch to buy, my beta testing...and others ive talked with, see some major issues with class balances...major. Balancing the classes is going to lead to a LOT of angry players...or ignoring the balance issues (it seems Trion is taking this route) is just going to lead to no class diversity, and broken endgame mechanics.
Since no one will see endgame untill after launch, none of the launch crowd can know if they are getting wrist deep into a game that is going to empty out come endgame. I would like to avoid that if possible. So i will wait and watch.

I agree with you, but I predict people will be 50 by the end of the headstar, I do wonder if endgame will be unlocked during the headstart.
Certainly isn't an innovative game by any means. Still, rather fun though for what it sets out to be.
Some of you people seriously need to take a break from mmos altogether. You're simply burned out on the genre as a whole. It is stunning you can't see this.
1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.
3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.
Why is the argument always that people are just burned out on the MMO genre when confronted with poor reviews? Perhaps some people just don't think Rift is that good of a game. Or perhaps people are just burned out on all the poor clones of other games. I think most people who find Rift dull and bland would gladly dish out cash for a quality MMO so the argument that they're just burned out on MMOs in general doesn't hold weight.

First off the devs are re-doing the entire starting zones.
Everything is in beta and the rift spawns have been changed from beta to beta, meaning the devs are testing out what is best.
Complaining about the normal quest's is like complaining about shooting in a fps game, sure it could be done better but only because it isn't a revolution going on in this game it doesnt mean anything, just that it is a standard feature for an mmorpg.
Seriously guys, if you played mmorpgs for 10 years and tried every single game that is out there I understand if you are tired of the same old type of mmorpg. But to actually write 100+++ posts about is beyond me..... maybe it's time to take a break from mmorpgs for a couple of years ?
If you are so tired of these mmorpg feature don't blame rift, wait for you revolutionary mmorpg but I do belive you have to wait a long time for it.
Rift isn't a revolutionary game, WE GET IT!.
It is still very good and fun. Dungeons are awsome and really hard, Rifts are an option more or less, and you can use that as a second way to level if you don't want to do some quest, if you only play rifts I understand that you get tired of them.
Me and some friends have been questing a couple of levels, then we did rifts for an hour, quested, did a dungeon, a couple of warfronts, played some rifts and then back to questing. It is definitly fun that there is a another option to do them and they way we played the game offered a rich variation.
The pvp is also fun and way better than a couple of other mmorpg's I've been playing, sure there are some balance issues but even oh-mighty-WOW still has balance issues.
Me and and atleast 3 of my friends are buying the game and we are having fun at lvl 27 +++.
why are you guys still playing MMORPG's? it's clear that you're tired of the genre.
I'm not tired of the genre, I tired of the EQ's, WoW's, the themepark so called MMORPG's. Rift is no different. If you enjoy it, I am happy for you. Play Rift.
Why can't innovative sandbox mmo's launch as polished as Theme parks? Is it the risk involved in making the sandbox or niche mmo that decides its cost? These are obvious questions, but pertain vividly to this genre.
Probably because no matter how crappy a themepark MMO is, it makes money. I believe Conan, CO and STO all made money despite being failures.
There's no way someone is going to bet like 50 million on something that has never made money compared to something that always makes money. Eve has made money but it's been a very long development that started out very small.
The only thing that will stop that cycle is some rich guy with balls or if consumers just stop paying for WoW-clones.
Also, it seems that games do worse the more that they deviate from the WoW model. The more a game is like WoW (with a twist, like Rifts), the more money it will make.
This is bound to hold true with Rift as well. If it fails to make any money, maybe producers will start to look at being more innovative, or more likely, just get out of MMOs completely because they're too risky.
You're not the only one, the quest system is absolutely terrible.
Agreed.
Im not sure if people are reading the quest text, i though that went out in early 2000 (the year) with being helpful and friendsly at endgame and helping out new players for fun, but they seem really forgettable.
Yeah theres some story, but i really dont care if boars are eating dudes crops, or if things are haunting an area much to the dislike of the lovable villager.
Im finding myself turining in a full set of quests at the quest hub im at, and then cringing when i turn my last one it, and giant green " ! " icons pop up over everyone head again....damnit now i gotta go back and kill all that stuff again to get whatever i need for these quests....

Because their developers are just as uninspired, but they at least try, and generally the technology isn't apt for the vision just yet.
But who's to say Teala or I or anyone else who sees RIFT for the piece of crap it is isn't playing other games and enjoying them? Your assumptions is full of first syllable, and a lot less of the latter.

It holds weight with me. Considering the bulk of the complaints can be made about any mmorpg out on the market.
You can color it however you want but when I read these topics it reeks of burnout. Plain and simple.
It has nothing to do with the fact the op didn't like the game. I don't care for it a ton myself.
1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.

I think honestly if you look at reviews and sub numbers, it could just be these clone titles suck.
In fact; the King declares that these clone titles just suck.

hahahaha!!!! that's rich! ya ok, the technogology isn't apt even though there were great MMORPG's 10 years ago that you all were happy with. hahahaha! but 10 year later the technology just isn't there! thanks man i needed a good laugh.
I think honestly if you look at reviews and sub numbers, it could just be these clone titles suck.

Yeah, right, feel free to point out which games failed because they were clones. Those games failed because of a multitude of reasons - almost none of which can be attributed to being a clone.
Frankly, I declare this overused fad of throwing around the clone term as the tantamount of supreme suckiness.
1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.

To me it only means 'I have nothing to say so I'll make tons of posts to repeat this wow-clone mantra until others believe it's a fact.'

This experience mirrors my exact sentiments. At some point for me--and I can't quite determine when, but it was during Rift's beta--that iconic "!" changed from a symbol of child-like wonder and excitement to a foreboding omen of more boredom to come.
I had thought it was of WoW that I had grown tired, but I guess it must just be the quest system in general. At the same time I cannot declare with particular adamancy that I wish to revert back to the archaic, open-world, grind style MMOs. I appreciate the context that quests have given MMOs. They provied a reason for slaying those 20 orcs. I have always been one to immerse myself fully in the modern MMO's lore, bathing in this context. But at this point in my MMO career, t hat context feels transparent. I honestly wouldn't care, and perhaps wouldn't even notice, whether my quest text reads, "Empower this magical wand with the essence of the 4 sacred idols that reside in the shadow troll camp to the north east." or, "Go click on those 4 rocks over there." It feels and plays the same.

I think honestly if you look at reviews and sub numbers, it could just be these clone titles suck.
In fact; the King declares that these clone titles just suck.
The King has spoken, reign supreme he shall. Die slowly will Rift.
um....was i talking to you? Mr. Nosey...
hahahaha!!!! that's rich! ya ok, the technogology isn't apt even though there were great MMORPG's 10 years ago that you all were happy with. hahahaha! but 10 year later the technology just isn't there! thanks man i needed a good laugh.
Yeah, right, feel free to point out which games failed because they were clones. Those games failed because of a multitude of reasons - almost none of which can be attributed to being a clone.
Frankly, I declare this overused fad of throwing around the clone term as the tantamount of supreme suckiness.
