I feel ya, but I dont think RIFT is to blame...the more people you have playing a game, the more asshats your gonna run into. Regardless if RIFT is for you or not, I bet after the game launches and people settle into their guilds and have to create some sort of standing for themselves....the community will be better, unless it becomes wildly sucessful like wow, then the amount of asshats will always be present...but I doubt it will be anywhere near those numbers.
I run into several nubs in WoW just about every day...is it because of the game, no...because so many people like it, and it draws walks of all life. RIFT seems like a niche crowd game, should sort out the serious players quickly when it releases. Most popular betas (like RIFT) always have negative people in it...dont blame the game. Kids nowadays are ruthless and most dont know how to show any signs of respect in real life...why would they in a game they arent gonna take seriously?
Didn't I and another say that we thought the Rift community was one of the worst we have ever encountered here on these forums? Yes...we did. What were we met with? People telling us that we we haters and trolls. I'll say it again, Rift's community is one of the worst I have ever encountered in any game and that includes WoW.
Why are you saying it's Rift's community when it's beta players and not retail players? It's even in open beta right now, which means everyone can play it for free for the time being so you're going to run into all the asshats and trolls imaginable in one space for that reason alone. Rift's beta's have all been very huge in terms of how many players they let in all along. So let's reserve judgement on the games real community until after it's released?
I am done with Rift. I really wanted to like the game, it looks great, Trion is putting great effort into it, but today is really the last nail in the coffin.
I know people say WOW has a bad community, and going into it's dungeon browser really shows you the scum of humanity. But this... no matter what little you ask or critizise, I haven't EVER seen such an amount of hate, harrasment, flaming and attack than in the Rift chat channels. Why is it so difficult to just discuss different opinions WITHOUT 30 people jumping at my throat? I just don't want to spent my limited lifetime in an environment with such amounts of hate and agression around me.
It just is the last straw on many issues. Boring "Kill 10 Goblin" quests all over, difficulty & respawn rates, recent rise of bugs and issues... but more than all this the community looks terrible to me. I was just saying my Ranger/Marksman was constantly dying in some places, and the sheer amount of mockery, hate and whatnot was just... depressing.
You know, I didnt want to say this, but I had my 40th birthday today, I feel it's like "ok I am officially not young anymore" and having more days behind me than ahead of me, I made one decision today: I WONT stay in places with mean and inpolite people. I am mortal, my time is limited and life is too precious to waste it in places with unfriendly people. So while in past years I was more willing to "fight over things", debate all over and taking all bad manners, I decided from today I will avoid such places.
Maybe you think about this one time.
Well I think you are making the same mistake many people have made in judging the joyriding beta community as the future core Rift community. If you felt the asshat quotient was the deciding factor in not playing I'd advise trying it again after it goes live if they offer a free trial.
As to the feelings of sameiness with other games, I completely agree. If you are coming straight to Rift from one of the other fantasy MMOs that this game is so similar to, you will most likely burn out fast. For me, with the exception of a short time in a few betas, (CO, STO, Cataclysm, and DCUO) and a couple of months in Fallen Earth, I've been living life MMO free for the past two years. So Rifts sameines to other games isn't that big of a deal.
"Gypsies, tramps, and thieves, we were called by the Admin of the site . . . "
Sorry OP you had such a negative impression and that you didn't have as much fun as you hoped. I think if you waited atleast after the free month you may have seen a better community. I fear that we'll never have good communities in new MMOs ever again, well popular ones atleast. Somehow I doubt it will be that much better at the begining of GW2 or TOR.
Your only bet is to get in a nice sized guild where you like everyone in it and that will be your primary source of community then ignore the rest. Then you are likely to enjoy playing w/e with them.
It sucks that you had such a bad experiance. I have been in the beta since beta 2. I havent encountered the lvl of problems you had, but I havent played this beta round yet. The chat channels have been getting progresively worse the more people they let in. Some people just like to cause problems and get under other peoples skin. All the WOW talk gets old as well, they took this from WOW they took that from WOW. WoW is soo much better I am going back to play that. There are alot of Wow players that just want to ruin others time in this game because they think nothing can be good, other than Wow. I would say give the game a try, I dont think it will be that bad when the game launches and all the non subs leave.
Man, maybe I was playing on the server with normal people. I never had some of the problems you had with community.
Do I expect to see immature people in the beta where keys were given out freely? Yup! And I sure did. But at no point did this game on the three servers I played on come close to WoWs level of "good lord I need to facepalm and shake my head at the same time" sort of thing.
I sure hope GW2 doesn't end up like this. Guild Wars has such a nice community.
Every MMO will end up like this. Guild Wars 2 will most probably fare worse as there is no subscription fee to act as a long-term deterrant to those that may have avoided the game if it cost more. While I am looking forward to GW2, I am expecting the servers/chat channels to be a akin to a sewer.
the reason why the community seems as bad/worse than WoW is because thats what most of the community is right now, players from WoW. With some 'wrost ofthe worst' of other communities as well no doubt. Once the children have to get permission to spend money on it or the man-children don't want to spend their minimum wage on it, it should definitely improve.
Didn't I and another say that we thought the Rift community was one of the worst we have ever encountered here on these forums? Yes...we did. What were we met with? People telling us that we we haters and trolls. I'll say it again, Rift's community is one of the worst I have ever encountered in any game and that includes WoW.
Yeah it's pretty bad. I love the game though, so I don't think I will let some asshats run me off. After all that is ignore and the ability to turn off chat channels.
yeah I just left the 1-9 chat channel. /1 is your region channel it works wonders.

yeah it will...no doubt. It can only get better lol.
Same stroy, every launch, every MMO since WOW opened the market to the casual player.
I am not even playing the open beta b/c I know how it is and I remember it from AOC and WAR. No surprise here. To me, the surprise is that people are still surprised by this and let it bother them.
Rift has no community right now. Its community is the same you find in a line waiting for stores to open on the day afetr Thanksgiving where people will trample each other to get that extra $20 off. The people right now are trying the game and only messing with it b/c they are bored with their game.
Please do not call this Rift's community and do not expect this to be the people who play the game at launch.
Have you thought for a moment that perhaps the community you hate is not the actual community?
I mean...seriously, you know?
The beta, forums, here, elsewhere, etc - they are all riddled with trolls looking for the game to fail miserably. Are there a bunch of people that seem to fly off the handle at a moment's notice? You have to take into consideration that your criticisms may have come after something else - or - they may have been the repetition of something stated a billion times within the past few minutes.
I'm not going to defend "them" - but to be honest, I am not sure that I have ever actually run into "them"...are you?
I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?

Whoa...take a deep breath...
I know its hard to spin it, but yes, the community was bad in beta, and right now its probably the worst of any game right now.
So mabey a large portion leaves for launch? Seems theres a good chunk of people, on every server ive seen, acting less than desirable. Its not just chat, if interactions while playing, grouping ect.
So if all these people leave, i gotta ask, how many people are going to be left?
To the OP, if you don't like the game don't play it, that's cool. But if you enjoy the game itself and are letting what is said in the chat dicatate your fun... Come on. Are you really 40? A mature person knows better. Stop taking yourself so seriously and don't read chat if it bothers you so much. Why even have a general chat tab open anyway? It's fucking useless to any part of the gameplay.
I'm about the same age as you, I find all of it mildly amusing, but then again, I tune into the chat window probably for one or two minutes a play session, I mostly hang out in vent with my friends and ignore the blather of a general chat channel in an MMO.
I dunno, maybe that's just me. I'm not the sensitive type. I long for the old days when men were men and didn't whine like little girls about frivolous bullshit like this.
I generally do not go about making comments in public channels . I cannot understand how you are all this sensitive. I am 50 + housewife who plays video games and I don't understand how you have all grown up that you can have this much of a problem with people being rude. Where do you all live that you do not encounter hostility when you criticize what other people like. Then you act like it is rare. Well it must be nice where you live.
Generally be prepared to accept hostility your life will be much better if you get thicker skin. I pugged my way to 60 in WoW ...been abused like mad as a priest in WoW and I did not give up this easily. If you think games in the coming months will miraculously get a better community you will be in for a shock. Learn to deal and also take the fact that your attempts at putting down what others like will have consequences. If you cannot handle that then perhaps you should stop making comments in public channels. What you expected to have an intelligent conversation with mild mannered individuals that commisurate with your point of view ?
Of course you are thinking why can't I make innocuous statements that are thinly veiled criticisms well you can as long as you are prepared for the consequences. If others take offense that is what you have to accept because for every action there is a reaction and often the reaction is an overeaction. I used to play Everquest a millenia ago and got into some bad fights but now I hardly bother any more. Simply not worth it.
I respect your decision of not wanting to waste what is left of your life on this but I will not let a poor community destroy whatever game I might like because then I might not have any more games to play. I avoid participating in public channels unless I am in a bad mood and itching for a fight . Generally I read them and talk to individuals who are interesting and more sane than the other rabid dogs.I have made friends like that.
Yeah hopefully the trolls don't actually buy the game... Find a good active guild and just leave guild chat on. I pretty much do that on all MMOs I play anyways. Don't let the nubs put you off playing a good game
All I can hope and pray for are forums that you can only post on if you are subscribed to the game, that should reduce the number of Trolls in the forums at least.
I've had decent luck so far on the deepstrike server guardian side for an overall enjoyable experience. But I agree...if you stay in any of the general chats you get a good taste of madness...though for me, its NOT as bad as it was at Aion launch. We shall see how things actually are once open beta is over.

Aye, I also decided to avoid playing in the open beta and just wait for headstart. Every open beta I have been in has been pretty much teh same thing over and over - obnoxious people just there for a free game and fun at others expense or the people who do nothing but talk about how much better/worse GameX was compaired to this one... Once they have to pay it all usually quiets down and those who plan on staying tend to settle in nicely while the asshats move on to the next game in beta like locusts looking for food.
I have seen this same trend in AO beta, WoW beta, EQ2 beta, AoC beta, WAR beta, etc etc. If a person begins to think that open beta community = game community, then they haven't really ever experienced a beta before.
There are 3 types of people in the world. 1.) Those who make things happen 2.) Those who watch things happen 3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"
to me the community is the least of its problems.... I just went and bought a new pc 2 weeks ago one especialy for gaming. A pretty top notch machine . Plays COD Black ops on the highest setting. Can you run it program Showed i hit well over recommended setting for Rift , but i have to play on the lowest graphics setting to hit atleast 20fps. WTF is up with that?
So ya i will be avoiding this one for the time being.

This thread is like the main reason why people are rude ingame! They find it funny if they make you mad... it's why they do it.
