i've played WoW, EQ2, DDO (before f2p), Vanguard, L2, Aion, AoC, CoX, Warhammer, and currently playing in the Rift beta. while communities DO vary on the personality-type pie chart, i have to say that the 'asshats' are in every game, and someone who is 'finished' dealing with them, needs to hang up the mmo towel. might as well stop any platform of online gaming, not to mention, any and everything that invloves group competition in real life.
i can't stand it either, but i ignore it because i know there is no escaping unlikable people in such a constant form of social interaction. maybe in 10 years (after i catch up to you) i will be in the exact same boat, and be at the point where i too will decide that gaming is no longer worth it. but i won't be foolish enough to try and convince myself that some magical, happy, fairytale of an online game exist, where no one is ever rude and untrusting, and every one i meet will bring smiles, flowers, and chocolates my way.
i do truly empathize with your post, and i'm not acting like you are wrong to desire a positive enviroment, but i AM curious to where you will go to find this perfect gaming community. most people online just want to murder your pixles and nothing more. and you expect kindness 100% of the time? i'm sure you can find a game to suit you, maybe in a good guild, or on a quiet pve server, but to expect everyone to act decent, all of the time, shows a personal lack of insight in human nature.
i 'try' to not let idiots ruin my good time, but i also notice that i get less tolerent when i'm not very immersed in the game. i really feel like you are just posting another 'rift hate trollbait thread'. so if you will excuse me good sir, i will return to underneath my bridge, and remind you that if you don't want to be trolled, stay away from their bridges.
Didn't I and another say that we thought the Rift community was one of the worst we have ever encountered here on these forums? Yes...we did. What were we met with? People telling us that we we haters and trolls. I'll say it again, Rift's community is one of the worst I have ever encountered in any game and that includes WoW.
The only problem here is you don't know the Rift community. You started following the game late like 80% of the people posting in this forum and that was about the time you starting hearing about a beta. THe real Rift community was around with the game LONG before then. Long before the days when this very forum was getting maybe 5 new posts a day (and I know as I was making 3 of them).
No, what you "think" is the Rift community is every other fairweather johnson who hopped at the chance to play another beta and that came in around the same time you did. These are the same folks who read your blog and followed you where you go. The same folks that argue with you everyday on these and other forums. The same folks that hop from game to game to game just to say how it doesn't compare to other games.
The same people that won't be around once the game launches and their free ride is over.
There are tons of guilds out there that were around before this influx of all of...well...YOU... full of great and creative people. I know as I talked with them on the O fourms, I've read their ideas, listened to their opinions. I still talk to them, and am guilded with many of them.
No, I won't call you a hater, or a troll. But I will tell you that you don't know the Rift community. You kow all the flies that were drawn in to stink up a new game as it happens with any game and beta. The good thing is the majority of flies like a free meal and thus will be gone shortly.
"Many nights, my friend... Many nights I've put a blade to your throat while you were sleeping. Glad I never killed you, Steve. You're alright..."
The community on my server wasn't bad at all. I don't remember the name of the server, but it was a PvP-RP one. In fact, someone brought up DAoC, and 10 people immediately chimed in on how great the game was and how it was their first game, including me. People were also very helpful with class and soul combination questions. So I guess what I'm saying is that if you like the game, but hate the community, there are a long list of servers with different communities you might want to try. Besides, this is an open beta event, so it has people that won't even be playing leaving once launch begins. On top of that, there's really no good reason to complain or get frustrated with a game over chat, because anyone with any kind of lengthly experience with MMORPG's would know that only incites fanbois or haters to start flame wars. It's like mentioning a very controversial opinion about politics or religion around people. It never ends well.
Its fine that you do not want to play the game. I am not trying to convince you to do anything,
However, there is always the option of joining family oriented guilds or MMO vetern guilds that have a lot of maturity and respect. Then seriously just close the general chat and have a great time with your guild.
This is what I am doing and I am having a awesome time with my guild.
Just my 2 cents,
Playing: PO, EVE Waiting for: WoD Favourite MMOs: VG, EVE, FE and DDO Any person who expresses rage and loathing for an MMO is preposterous. He or she is like a person who has put on full armor and attacked a hot fudge sundae.
Aside from constant comparisons of Rift with other games, I don't see much of an agressive atmosphere, especially given that this is an open beta phase and especially since I'm on a PvP server.
to me the community is the least of its problems.... I just went and bought a new pc 2 weeks ago one especialy for gaming. A pretty top notch machine . Plays COD Black ops on the highest setting. Can you run it program Showed i hit well over recommended setting for Rift , but i have to play on the lowest graphics setting to hit atleast 20fps. WTF is up with that?
So ya i will be avoiding this one for the time being.
I play on a AMD 6000+ only a dual core 4 gigs ram ATI 4850 I just logged out and was getting 40 fps on high. Seems each persons' mileage will vary.
I play on High settings and get 40+ fps outside cities. Mid 30s and up in cities.
Mileage does vary indeed. Some people think just b/c it's happening to them it happens to everyone. Or they look at their rig and forget there is a whole lot of internet inbetween them and the game's servers.
"Many nights, my friend... Many nights I've put a blade to your throat while you were sleeping. Glad I never killed you, Steve. You're alright..."
Aside from constant comparisons of Rift with other games, I don't see much of an agressive atmosphere, especially given that this is an open beta phase and especially since I'm on a PvP server.
Experiences may vary, but those were my experiences with EU servers, generally I found them to be on average of a better quality than US ones.
As for Rift beta, same applies, experiences vary, I didn't have the experiences on the servers I played that the OP had.

The mmorpg.com site is maybe a good example of this: before the open betas and the main mass of mmorpg.com posters started flocking towards the Rift forumsection, the Rift section was a prime example of maturity and reasonable debate, with most of the posters in it people who were genuinely interested in Rift, not just because it was the FOTM new game on the block. When the regular mass of forumposters and frequent posters dived onto the Rift threads, it became the usual polarized debates and flamewars as you see with a lot of mmorpg.com forumsections.
The same with the ingame open beta player population, I expect it the community as it can be seen now in open beta to be different from how it'll be post-launch and especially after the first month has expired.
The ease with which predictions are made on these forums: Fratman: "I'm saying Spring 2012 at the earliest [for TOR release]. Anyone still clinging to 2011 is deluding themself at this point."
Have you thought for a moment that perhaps the community you hate is not the actual community?
I mean...seriously, you know?
The beta, forums, here, elsewhere, etc - they are all riddled with trolls looking for the game to fail miserably. Are there a bunch of people that seem to fly off the handle at a moment's notice? You have to take into consideration that your criticisms may have come after something else - or - they may have been the repetition of something stated a billion times within the past few minutes.
I'm not going to defend "them" - but to be honest, I am not sure that I have ever actually run into "them"...are you?
Whoa...take a deep breath...
I know its hard to spin it, but yes, the community was bad in beta, and right now its probably the worst of any game right now.
So mabey a large portion leaves for launch? Seems theres a good chunk of people, on every server ive seen, acting less than desirable. Its not just chat, if interactions while playing, grouping ect.
So if all these people leave, i gotta ask, how many people are going to be left?
Simple answer to a simple question. The people that will be left are the ones that like the game and plan on paying to play it. All the trolls, the haters, the freebies, and anyone else thats just there to talk smack and get a month of free e-peen juice will have left. And I say good riddance to each and every one of those people. You know, like the ones saying the soul system is unbalanced and going to destroy the entire world and that Rift wont last more than 10 days past launch. I actually went back on these forums and seen someone who claimed less than 30 days ago that Rift wouldnt sell more than 10k copies, 10K you believe that?
No way, even riddled with WoW players, is the player base in Rift worse than WoW itself. So lets all take that deep breadth, step back from the speaker the trolls are preaching over and take a quick look at reality. And if your unsure what reality is I recommend clicking some of the names of the posters in this thread and reading where they stand, really stand before you follow them.
(DISCLAIMER - The use of the word YOU in the above post is not directed at any one person in particular, but towards those who fall into the category itself - there is no personal attack here, neither intentional nor implied.)
I keep getting invites back to beta but from what I saw it was so generic, yes lovely graphics and some nice shiny but I believe and hope MMO players are starting to think for themselves and beginning to expect more.
We all can forgive bugs and problems like that but if a game doesn't inovate or try to be original why do I want to go back through another generic game.
I know people say WOW has a bad community, and going into it's dungeon browser really shows you the scum of humanity. But this... no matter what little you ask or critizise, I haven't EVER seen such an amount of hate, harrasment, flaming and attack than in the Rift chat channels. Why is it so difficult to just discuss different opinions WITHOUT 30 people jumping at my throat? I just don't want to spent my limited lifetime in an environment with such amounts of hate and agression around me.
Don't base your opinion on a game community of what you see in a beta.
A true game community takes a few months to form. Sure Rift might get a horrible community but there are some real jackasses that always shows up at betas to complain and insult, a lot of them will be gone after a month.
Lets wait to complain about a games community until it actually have formed.
I think I'm done too. I might mess around a little more ingame but I doubt it.
It's basically just another gear grind. I've already done that too many times. I will agree the game is beautiful, performs well, and has a good UI. They clearly put some thought in the game and it will probably be the most polished mmo launch we've seen in awhile.

Duh, most MMOs are just another gear grind.
It will be hard to find something that isn't the only 2 upcomming that isn't seems to be GW2 and WoDO. Well, possibly TOR as well but that I wont believe until I see it.
10 years ago MMOs were about grinding levels, now it is gear. But it is always risky to leave the working model, Rift will do fine as it is, if it wanted to be about something else than gear it would either fail or do better, but it is a huge risk to take for the investors.
wow a post about a game community that does not exist yet, unless you consider all the open beta scrubs the future community of this game.Wish some of you could of see the real bet a server community and judge by that instead of declaring doomsday for something has not even form yet.

I really really tried to like it. REALLY. But I realized I'm totally burned out of the kill-x-mmo's. Really burned.
So I sit back and wait for a CIV type mmo.
Best of luck and have fun in the game, for the ones who enjoy it!

As one of the burned out on kill-x-mmo people too, I like it, its worth a try since it definately is NOT one of them.

All of this, and people still think I'm silly for saying that I would pay extra $$ per month to play on a 'mature' server. I would.
I understand that MMORPG's are 'games' and 'games are for kids'. That's the usual response that I get whenever I discuss the idea of 'adults only' servers.
It's not that I want to kill all of the fun or that I want an environment that is serious 100% of the time. But the type of trash that's running through our games these days, we shouldnt' have to tolerate or accept it.
Unleash the banhammer already. If I were a CSR, I would watch the chat channels for a while, locate the offenders, then start silencing them. I would take away their ability to speak in public channels for 'x' length of time, based on the content of their spam they may be silenced for hours/days. 2nd and 3rd times they did it, I would make sure they knew they were warned and that I intended to ban their accounts permanently if they didn't stop. 3rd time... banned for life. I would add another twist... I would be sure to capture chat logs and email them to the player. And depending on the age of the player, those logs should go to the parents of the player.
And I hear the statement: 'it's a game...it's supposed to be fun'. The statement is correct. It is supposed to be fun.... for EVERYONE, not just the immature.
Aside from constant comparisons of Rift with other games, I don't see much of an agressive atmosphere, especially given that this is an open beta phase and especially since I'm on a PvP server.
EU has the problem of having many languages. People are more reluctant to type english when they don't need to, unless their native language is english - or like you - can express themselves fairly well.
And Germans and French don't even like to adapt and simply demand their own servers. On those servers you see a very hostile community on PvP servers.

@OP:
1. it is an open beta, which often attracts the worst of the MMO gamer community.
2. open beta community =/= post launch community
3. in general, chose RP PvE servers for on average better ingame community
4. In general I've better experiences with EU servers than US servers
