The reason is simple: if Rift succeeds it will send a message to every MMO company that innovation isn't needed and players want WoW clones. I don't want WoW clones, so for me and everyone else who doesn't, Rift failing would be a good thing.
AKA "I want to force everyone to enjoy the same games I do."
A message has already been sent. Dozens of mmo's have been launched with very innovative ideas and failed because new ideas take time to work out the kinks. The market has proven it does not have much patience.
I like Rifts approach. I think it's smart to launch a game with a proven formula and just concentrate on doing it better than everyone else.
Once the good foundation has been laid then they can move forward with new ideas because if they fail they will still have the solid foundation to keeping things going.
why do people insist that rift is doing nothing innovative? theyr invasion/dynamic rift system is something i've never seen successfully implemented in an mmorpg. at first glance the game seems pretty linear but there is a fair amount of quests you can get access to only if you actuallt explore a little and find the quest hub. also, the more and more i tinker with their soul/skill system the more i fall in love with it. at first i thought all the skill trees were more or less the same, but i was very wrong. mixing and matching skill tree combinations can make you feel really unique, and if the nerf bat comes along and decides to balance a few skills you are not in danger of having to reroll your toon again- you just find your new different combination. also, since you can easily switch builds, i can play whatever original build i really enjoy when i solo, but when i group up to do a raid i can easily switch into the most efficient cookie cutter build to help the team as much as possible.
Most memorable games: AoC(Tryanny PvP), RIFT, GW, GW2, Ragnarok Online, Aion, FFXI, FFXIV, Secret World, League of Legends (Silver II rank)
I just think its good for the fantasy mmo genre that theres another game that looks like it could potentially be extremly popular .Monopolys are never good I hope one has ended here with the release of this game . Month two will be the teller though .
This does not mean active and paying, but is a sign of extreme interest in the game by the
MMO community.
RIFT™ HEAD START KICKS-OFF TODAY AS TRION ECLIPSES ONE MILLION REGISTERED ACCOUNTS
Names of Rift public servers revealed on the game’s official forums
Trion Worlds announced today that more than one million accounts have been created to date, signaling a high level of interest for the company’s first massively multiplayer online game, Rift™, which is scheduled to launch March 1st in North America and March 4th in Europe. The news hits just as the game’s Head Start period begins, giving pre-order customers advance playtime before servers officially open on launch day.
Launching with 28 Head Start servers, Rift will feature dedicated realms for PvP, PvE, and role-playing players. Servers are live today, coinciding with the game’s Head Start period, which lasts until the game launches on March 1st in North America and March 4th in Europe. Find the official server list on Rift’s official forums at: http://forums.riftgame.com/showthrea...48#post1198848
I signed up for beta 7, decided I didn't like the game (I haven't been back to this forum til I just saw this thread on the mmorpg.com home page) after a week or so.
I'll just say that I asked to have my account removed along with my personal information. I got a huge flame thread going of people shit talking on the official forums (yea they wipe beta characters but not accounts, and the forum accounts are also the same login as your game account aka a great place for brute forced chinese gold farmers to start; and they were already advertsing in beta btw) after I asked where to delete my account after not finding an option in the forums, the support section or the account managment.
So basically, I'm just posting to say, yes they're counting beta accounts, I turned in a ticket on the 21st . I got this on the 22nd, and haven't heard anything else since:

As far as I know, my account is still active although I've not tried it they haven't notified me anything else. I think it's really pathetic that it takes a "Tier 3" support team to remove an account.
Notice I didn't even go in to my opinions on the game, those are in other threads both here and there if you care (you don't )
Currently Playing: Perpetuum MMOs Played (most time spent to least): World of Warcraft (BG/Open world PvP focused), Lord of the Rings Online (PvMP focused), Warhammer Online (BG PvP focused), Global Agenda, Age of Conan, DC Universe Online (PvP focused), Runes of Magic, Allods, Aion, Fallen Earth
I signed up for an account. I don't play nor do I want to play rift at this time.
Smoke and mirrors.
Let see how many servers they open up and how many they can keep open. That is the only true indication that a games is doing well. Everything else is guess work or "creative number crunching".
BINGO!
WoW came so early, I thought this one would slide but you made it happen.
These arguments have been seen and they're so old and moot I'm coffing dust.
Remember when Aion released? It had so much hype, and it was so new and shiney...
How's Aion doing now?
Well?
In west it's doing well, comparing to other MMORPG games. It could do better, but afterall it's eastern and niche in west. There's no need to argue about that fact.
Remember when Aion released? It had so much hype, and it was so new and shiney...

I played in the beta for Aion, and continued to play for 9 months afterwards. I played in the Rift beta and have no intention in playing it ever again. If I was a good representation of the common player, then Rift will suffer a fate worse then Aion, but I don't think that everybody is like me. There just isn't enough room in this world for that much awesomeness. :P
All of my posts are either intelligent, thought provoking, funny, satirical, sarcastic or intentionally disrespectful. Take your pick.
I get banned in the forums for games I love, so lets see if I do better in the forums for games I hate.
I enjoy the serenity of not caring what your opinion is.

Why is it that gamers seem to thrive off a culture of failure?
Instead of embracing a company's milestone (albeit probably an internal one) of having 1 million people interested enough in their product (during the development phase and post-release) to create an account, people have to shit all over it like there is some sort of evil conspiracy lurking behind it all just waiting steal their children.
For years now we have been complaining about over-hyped games and their shitty launches, and the first time we get a game that looks like it is going to be able to be reasonably successful and have a solid launch and what do people do? They crap all over it. We deserve the shitty games we get, because people can't appreciate the good ones when they come along.

I dont care if the game has 10 000 accounts or 10 000 000, game works fine for me for now and i dont regret the money I spent on it.
There are 26 EU servers and those seem to have que most of the time all of them and this is head start,im sure they start at least 26 more servers when the game gets released.
My guess is that it will be something like 4-500k copyes sold at release.
1) I believe the release stated "PURCHASED ACCOUNTS". You don't purchase a beta account. Learn to read and comprehend what you read.
Bah, I need to learn to read. Read someone else's post and not the original. My bad. Still, an impressive number.
2) For those saying "nobody was following rift until 2 months ago", Um, excuse? Plenty of us who are indeed somebody have been following this game. Word of mouth is a large part of how this game got to 1 million PURCHASED ACCOUNTS at pre-release. Just because some thought it was another fail/sameoldsame/clone game and wanted to talk it down without even playing the beta doesn't mean Trion/Rift didn't have a healthy following before "2 months" ago.
While not purchased accounts, the majority of the above still remains true.
Ok, sure, I'll give you that hardly anyone ON THIS SITE was following it, but this isn't the only MMO site out there. As a sampling the majority of my guild avoids this website yet all have been following the game since mid to late last year at least. Some longer.
Kudos Trion, keep on doing things in a straight-forward, honest way and making the cynics and pessimists look bad!
Brave of you to admit you were wrong.
Yet silly of you to state that Trion posting a press release regarding ACCOUNTS(as we understand their definition) as a "straight-forward, honest way" of marketing... Cryptic were dicks when they did it, and Trion are dicks for doing it now. And wow, is it bad for Trion to dance like Cryptic does.
If you're enough of a moral creature to admit you were wrong, you're enough of a such to admit that argument is absurd.
Still, I hope you got past the queues and managed to enjoy some time in the game you love!
Marketing teams are like politicians across the board: Liars. Yes, I get that. That said, Trion's marketing team is not the summation of the trion dev team. Unlike many of those posting here I've had interaction with the Trion dev team for months, not just last month. Read into that as you will. That stated, in my experience they have been nothing but straight forward and honest. It is for that I made the comment I did in the original post. I said what I said (and mean it), you added the "of marketing" part to it for which I am not responsible.
Yes, I have no issue admiting when I'm wrong. I have seen Trion work and interact with their community throughout the process, alot longer than most around here and on that I know my initial comment is right.
"Many nights, my friend... Many nights I've put a blade to your throat while you were sleeping. Glad I never killed you, Steve. You're alright..."

Just means it'll be the quickest and most rapid fall from grace when everyone realises how shallow it is as a game.
Just means it'll be the quickest and most rapid fall from grace when everyone realises how shallow it is as a game.
No it won't. Even if everyone quit the game tomorrow, they would still have over 1 million registered accounts.
Indeed. I cant stand rift anymore nor do I like Trion's marketing strategies. My account that I created for beta/forums is being counted in that number. Everyone that signed up for beta is also probably being counted, even those who didnt actually get in or chose to leave after testing the game.
Active subs are all that matter, because thats what equates to money.
there is already too many damn people playing Rift so i could give a rats butt about how many accounts there are. I come from many small game communities like vangaurd, FE, TCOS and there are just too many damn people!!!! aaaaaa!!!
Rift is doing well thats all i can tell you.

1 million accounts will be disappointed.
The box sales will tell the real story....
Another good indicatot will be the queue times on launch day. See how many people bought the game that werent fanboys like me and preordered
I am playing Rift and LOVING it, but as people have said, "created accounts" doesnt really mean much.

Trion has is in no way released fake number: They said have 1 million registered accounts, not copies sold. You can't pin this on Trion.
Doing about 3.3 million subs worldwide. Only about 200k less than Warcraft. I'd say they're doing pretty good.
Yeah. It may not be doing great in NA and Europe but worldwide, it is a success.
