No it won't.  Even if everyone quit the game tomorrow, they would still have over 1 million registered accounts.

Indeed. I cant stand rift anymore nor do I like Trion's marketing strategies. My account that I created for beta/forums is being counted in that number. Everyone that signed up for beta is also probably being counted, even those who didnt actually get in or chose to leave after testing the game.

Active subs are all that matter, because thats what equates to money.

I too have to wonder what' the deal is with "registered accounts?"  That number means absolutely nothing.  I'm registered.  I played during almost all of the beta weekends. I didn't buy and I'm not playing.  AND....I'm not the only one.  Registered accounts is not an accurate measure of ANYTHING except for initial interest in the game.  It doesn't tell you anything about anything really. I realize it's too early for them to release any subscription numbers, but I have to wonder what the point is in releasing the number of registered users since....well....it doesn't tell anyone much.

Meh watch about 10% or 5% of that stay after the first free month. Initial numbers mean nothing really. Gotta see numbers after the free month which for most mmorpg's they are lucky ot keep 10% of the people after the free month. Rift lacks really anything new or revolutionary, its yet another wow clone/been-there-done-that mmorpg on the market. I tried it and I don't see what all the hype was about. It felt far too generic to keep me intersted for long.

"An MMORPG could be completely diffirent from WoW. Just look at games like Dofus, Wizard101 or EVE. But as it is, most of the Western MMOs are trying to succeed by out-WoWing WoW. It's like an army of 10 sports games made about same sports, and barely none about other sports. WoW clone is an accurate description of those games, it manages to convey much information with only two words."

And yet....they're counting you and me (and many others) in with their "registered users" number.  Just goes further to show how little that number really means.

all game companies do that. Even Blizzard who really doesnt need to. Dice did as well. As did Valve. Maybe it is to please the Investors. They like big numbers lol

    You have a point. :)

    Got it.

I'm glad the game experts take the time to explain these things to people.  I wasn't sure how that worked.

Your like a Robot that hears something and just repeats it. The reason why people spend $50 on a MMO and quit the first month is because there's no content or the game doesn't run properly...

Rift has a lot of content and has a very Robust End-Game and the game just run's smooth like butta. So no you won't see the weekend warriors leaving Rift after the first month.

Simple fact is the game is just a lot of fun to play...

    Best Regards and Happy Hunting...

This does not mean active and paying, but is a sign of extreme interest in the game by the

    MMO community.

RIFT™ HEAD START KICKS-OFF TODAY AS TRION ECLIPSES ONE MILLION REGISTERED ACCOUNTS

Names of Rift public servers revealed on the game’s official forums

Trion Worlds announced today that more than one million accounts have been created to date, signaling a high level of interest for the company’s first massively multiplayer online game, Rift™, which is scheduled to launch March 1st in North America and March 4th in Europe. The news hits just as the game’s Head Start period begins, giving pre-order customers advance playtime before servers officially open on launch day.

Launching with 28 Head Start servers, Rift will feature dedicated realms for PvP, PvE, and role-playing players. Servers are live today, coinciding with the game’s Head Start period, which lasts until the game launches on March 1st in North America and March 4th in Europe. I'm gonna quote one of my post, regarding these "veteran MMORPGers" and why they say that this game is shallow:

"Man I love the nostalgia filter. Every bad gameplay design, inconvenient, outdated features and fucked up balancings just need to pass through that filter to become "deep gameplay"."

1 million registered accounts, eh?  Sounds pretty similar to Warhammer Online and Aion, eh?

Funny you should mention those games because I even went so far as to pre-order them, whereas with RIFT I am only one of the million "registered" and....I am not playing, nor have I played ANY of these games beyond beta. And guess what....I'm not the only one.  All were games I took great interest in and found VERY quickly that I didn't care for them. I did learn through these precise games....NEVER EVER to pre-order.

I'm a UO vet, an active EQ2 vet, and I have played in many many betas both open and closed. Registering means you're interested and that is ALL that it means. A game can have millions of registered users and end up with only a few hundred thousand actual active accounts. Personally, I think numbers at this point are ridiculous to even consider. TRION is basically using registrations as bragging rights. I'm unimpressed. I will be impressed with REAL numbers that are a million or greater in six months.

I find this entire consideration of numbers at this point to be superfluous and really just insincere.

Meh, anyone with any experience in the marketing tactics of MMOs will know that the 1 million quoted is a hollow figure.

The reason marketeers keep using that tactic is because there remain enough people who hear "1 million" in relation to a game and think they're in danger of missing out on the next big thing. So they buy both the "lie" (even though Trion didn't lie about the no. of registered accounts, strictly speaking, they just didn't correct the implication that those accounts were all actively subscibed) and into the hype, and they'll buy the game.

I honestly thought by now that anyone with any interest in Rift would have already tried it, but I'm getting messages on FB from friends asking about it - the marketing is working, and it's catching people who are not normally interested in MMOs, which may have been part of the plan.

Old tactics, but they are working.

Some people are impressed with big numbers. Nothing you can do about it. Point in case, look at the bigger MMO and how it's tutted as the best thing ever because it has the numbers.

1 million accounts really means nothing. Or very little I suppose. It would mean absolutely nothing if it was Bioware or SOE. Trion is an unknown developer, so to gather this much interest it means lttile at this point.

1 million nomads come across an oasis and they all sip it dry.

was it because there was something special in the water?

    or

was it because they were just so fuckin thirsty after having been dehydrated in a fucking desert that they just needed a fucking drink?

as to whether or not they will get botulism from the water is yet to be seen...

  • ZorlokZorlok Member UncommonPosts: 132

Not that the game is released is there any way to get a "real" number how many people are actually playing it?  How many people can actually be on each server?  Do companies like Trion release this information to the public?  And if they do where is it posted?

  • GolelornGolelorn Member RarePosts: 1,395

If this is copies sold, then that is impressive, for sure. The real test, imo, is how many active accounts after 3 months.

To bad that trion is just like Turbine with we have a million registered accounts.   Turbine pulled that same type of lie.

How about Trion saying ok our of those million registered accounts how many of those are actually playing/paying customers.

Yes we seen that lie before.    Turbine, War hammer, AOC.

He he I hate to say it but registered don't mean paying.

Yeah, I am extremly curious about all this as well.  SO far the shards seem to be pretty full.  About hald of them are "High" the other quarter is at "Medium" and the other 25% is at "low".  I dom't mind numbers like that at all.  I want to play a game that has a good population so hopefully my server will keep up.  I am curious to see where the game will go from here.  I don't see the game failing in any way just becuase of the game play.  It is built realyl well and I see many poeple, who are in game, loving it.

I want to see the servers, "Shards", keep going up.  I'll worry once I see merges, and so forth..

No, this is not copies sold. It reads "registered accounts." That would include anyone that registered for an account on the site, including people that played during the beta who paid nothing. It's just registered users, nothing more, nothing less, which is why I don't think it's very valuable information beyond just showing that there was/is a lot of interest in the game.

Except this post on their forum from the community manager, has Trion Worlds really started hammering this information?

If not, then it's more a case of news websites and certain forum users making a big deal out of it. I don't see any 'evil marketing plot' or 'lies'...

Hey its trion's cm,  what else do you want to say,  this is not users who said this but it is folks from trion who siad it.

When the comunity manger makes that kind of statement shes talking for the company,  unless shes just talking for herself, and that makes it the same type of lie we seen other games say.

I don't dought they have 1mill regestered but thats is ot what is playing,  and they are trying to sucker more folks in going hey look we got a million,  thats kind of deciptive advertising.
