Actually i have a friend who bought Rift and he only expects 4 weeks of entertainment. Just because its not logical to you doesn't mean its impossible.
Is this just under the assumption Trion is not going to release new content? This might a surprise but they have been in post game raid content since Beta 5. We should have a double digit boss raid pretty soon. The other raid Hammerknell is sitting in Moonshade if you want to go look at it. That is within 60 days accrding to Trion.
Like I said Trion would literally have to stop.
My friend could care less about raid content. He will just burn through the solo and group stuff and move onto the next game.
One of the key moments will be the April period, when the 1 month free period expires. Then we'll learn if Rift will follow the now common trend of high launch peak numbers after which a dip and decline follows, or that it will break away from this trend. Another key moment will be the 3-4 month after launch period.
The ease with which predictions are made on these forums: Fratman: "I'm saying Spring 2012 at the earliest [for TOR release]. Anyone still clinging to 2011 is deluding themself at this point."

You can not say they did a good job just yet considering its only day 2 or 3 of post launch, Free month doesnt end until beginning of april, when that happens then you can look and see if the servers are balanced or not...
So this is where the topic has shifted. Your logic IS people dropped 60-80$ to play a game for one month? Does this at all sound logical?
This is like a buying a new car just to stop driving it because you need to put gas in it. I can understand not driving it because it keeps breaking down, but if it is running smooth and you enjoy why would you get rid of it?
Where is the game breaking qq on the forums? Outside of Saboteur and Mana drain qq nothing is screaming broken game to me yet.
Ha ha, this shit is so funny.
Haters and fanboys alike all grasp to the same asinine arguments.
Fanboys: if a game fails they will say at this stage, no no the game isn't failing because it is to early yet. Wait a while, people will see the games uber value and come subscribing soon, you'll see. (FFXIV comes to mind).
Haters: screw these numbers, they don't mean shit. We will see where the game is in x amount of months. (talking Rift).
Some people can't accept that others can have fun in a game they don't. How ephemeral this fun is, is irrelevant.
Some people can't accept that their favorite is not that special in the grand scheme of things.
Overall the "haters" vastly outnumber the "lovers". To love something involves some amount of risk, and veterans are getting risk avert with every passing launch.

If you wouldn't enjoy being smug so much and would have followed the launches of other big releases in the past years you'd realize that the above observation isn't motivated by "hate" or contempt for a game at all.
It's common knowledge that the ultimate succes of a mmorpg can't be determined so soon after launch. Personally I wish Rift to do well: it might bolster the confidence of the industry and investors in subscription based mmorpgs somewhat after years of financial disappointments. But yeah, it IS too early to tell whether Rift will be a succesful mmorpg. Sub retention rates after a few months will be the best indicator of that.

Only on mmorpg.com and sites like this one. Comes from the large amount of sandbox oriented MMO gamers who hate/dislike themepark MMO's, jaded/burnt out MMO gamers who're in between MMO's, and MMO gamers who're only fan of 1 or 2 MMO's disliking all other MMO's

Yeah, because who decides on what game is fun based on some random unknown persons idea of what a failed game is or not.
It's almost like I would not dare to say that I have played games that someone else, perhaps, did not enjoy.
I am enjoying Rift myself, but with such a quick level we can expect to see numbers dwindle a little sooner than the average MMO. The question isn't IF, but how much. There has yet to be an MMO that didn't bleed a bit in the months following release, and Rift isn't going to be the first not to.
The end-game is really whats going to determine if they are brilliant or not. Its much easier to open the correct number of servers based on box sales and projections than it is to keep players interested once they hit the end game. I haven't gotten there yet, so I can't say for sure, but based on what I have seen so far (I started on first day of head start, no betas) that is going to be a major concern for Trion. If they don't try to stay ahead of the curve, they will need to do some server merges for sure.
That's not to say I don't think they will stay ahead of the curve. I don't have a problem with a quick-leveling game, per say, as long as there is enough to keep things going once the leveling stops. IF Trion can roll out content as well as they polish, then this game will do really well.
It's a little early to be crowning any MMO genius titles just yet, but I will give them this:
They've released the most polished and complete MMO I've seen at release. This game runs like its been out for years. If they can match that quality level with varied end-game content, then this could very well be the next decade's major MMO. Time will tell.
I really hope that *insert game name here* will be the first game to ever live up to all of its pre-release promises, maintain a manageable hype level and have a clean release. Just don't expect me to hold my breath.
Haters: screw these numbers, they don't mean shit. We will see where the game is in x amount of months. (talking Rift).

I'd even say the after 7 month period because I know a lot ot people that took advantage of the $9.99 per month founders pricing at six months...
Anyhow, I think that people read way too much into server merges anyways. IMO it's a lot better to start with too many servers than not enough.
------------------------- "Searchers after horror haunt strange, far places..." ~ H.P.Lovecraft, "From Beyond"
Its better to merge servers than let them empty and add a cross-server tool for everything in the game (wow). There can be a server-community, but not a cross-server-community.
Pfft ... it's Trion's problem (if it is or becomes one) ... so far they dealt correctly with everything.
*back to play the game instead of wasting time on futile discussion about things we have no influence on or think we know better then the publisher that has all the insight we do not have ...

These posts get funnier and funnier. I've seen trolls from a month ago, turn into defenders of the game and others start moving the goal line to qualify if the game is a success.
Guess what. I'll tell you something about the game that's abundantly clear with factual evidence. The number of servers and how many of them are populated.
It's a MASSIVE success. Now if you want to discuss long term success, you are absolutely right - it's way too early to tell.
But right now in this moment, Rift is destroying most of the competition and has blindsided the industry.
They have almost 100 servers and almost every one of them is medium/high/full. This isn't a minor achievement and it's not something that even WAR was able to obtain at launch. This game has set the bar for launches. One that every other new game to come out will be judged by. This thread is about that, not about the long term server population.
I am in complete agreement with the OP. I thought Trion WAY over-extended themselves with adding 31 servers for launch to the already numerous Headstart ones. I was completely wrong and kind of shocked myself at how well the game is doing out of the gate. I thought it would be bigger than the naysayers, but I didn't expect over a million subs.
If you want to know how I got that number, look at the number of servers and know that traditionally servers hold 20,000 to 30,000 people.
I can tell you one thing that is a promise. SWToR and GW2 better release near perfect. There is no room for we will patch as we go after release anymore.
GW2 had better be beyond perfect. It better be the most perfect game ever released with the way it has been hyped and how the fans have promised it will destroy other MMO's.
SWToR after how many years and how much money? It can not be missing anything or people are going to go after it like vultures.
Trion could have honestly released a pretty bad game with a good concept and everyone would have said, "well they are a new company and this is their first MMO". Instead they have released better then anything I have seen in the past 5 years.
Give credit where credit is due because they elevated the industry so far in what we are allowed to expect from a release.

Yah it's refreshing to see a nice release for once. Hopefully this will do well to remind Bioware and ArenaNet to do it the right way. I don't particularly like the game, but to wish the failure and this and that doesn't really do anyone any good.
You want other companies to do well so it promotes more competition and better products.

Yeah, I think noone can deny it has been a box office hit. Amazing achievement for Trion. And like I said: this is good for the industry, even if Rift isn't your kinda game.
I personally thought they had launched too many servers but i just checked the server status and they are perfectly implemented.
Majority of the servers are medium some some high some full and very few low.
So yeah.. Trion are the new mmo geniuses.
Nicely played.
And you have never played a MMORPG before
1. At launch happy players play much more the first month then they will ever play again. Even if you totally love the game, you simply will not play it as much 3 months from now as you do now. This is true of every game, and every expansion. Servers are always full after an expansion and then are not full after 2 months. Not because players quit... but because players are not playing as many hours
2. MMORPGs are very top heavy. If players are interested in a MMORPG, they play it the first day. MMORPGs are competitive games.. nobody wants to be far behind other players. It is the reason Wotlk sold 3M copies the first day, and only 1M copies the next 30 days. I am not saying Rift is going to lose a lot of subscriptions, it probably won´t since it had a very open and fair beta (as opposed to decieving players like the AOC beta).. but in all honesty.. it is unlikely the Rift will grow much for a few months. The majority of people who are interested in it have played the beta and bought it the first day.
I promise you.. next month, or maybe 2 months.. there will be a lot of ghost servers and the people playing on those servers will be asking for mergers or transfers. I hope the devs already have plans for this.

EU:
7 low
Rest medium / high
US:
14 low
Rest medium / high
And it isn't even prime time for either of them!
Actually I think this number of servers is quite good estimated.. actually more will be needed I'm sure!
People still think this game is a new AoC, WAR or w/e - ITS NOT.
EU launch date is today. It'll be interesting to watch the prime time (6 hours from now roughly)
