Where most regular MMO's have some kind of choice or areas where no pvp is allowed eve does not. When CCP finally relizes this and puts in an on or off pvp switch or a pve sever only then alot of folks who had bad experiences might just return and CCP makes a little more money.
An on/off switch would ruin the game. The entire dynamics of null sec/low sec/high sec would be useless. The game is based on risk vs. reward. More risk (null sec mining, for example) equals more reward (higher ISK payouts). If any carebear (of which I was one) could roam around in nullsec there wouldn't be a point anymore.
After all these eyars I am sure that CCP is more interested in the game direction and integrity of it than a few dollars.
And, in the end, isnt that what we all what? Game designers and producers to stay true to the game and their vision? I know I don't want game designers yielding to the masses, or popularity or the almighty dollar. I want a good game that is uncompromising.

CCP provides many dynamics to discourage pvp and protect players that smart players take advantage of. To provide a switch to turn off pvp to allow players to do what they want when they want where they want with no consequences would ruin the game.
Ok if this is true then why do they allow suicide ganking in high section and do nothing ?
It is true and suicide ganking doesn't disprove it.
Ok then lets ask this question ? Why are there 6 pages and counting on what Eve is or is not, somefolks may not see it your way and if more then a few do then CCP might just take a look and say hey what if we did do a pve or on and off switch. We might just fatten up our bank account and get some more folks to hang around ? But because CCP is a business the bottom line might just surprise you.

To blame an entire community on one individual is your fault. There are asshats in every game, EVE is no different. Like many of the posters here said, EVE is a great game, a game of ups and downs. A person's ability to deal with that either makes them an EVE player or not. There is no instant gratification in EVE. Gratification comes after hard work and planning. This is what makes EVE great and its not a game for everyone.
When I played EVE I met great people. The taught me a lot. Within 3-4 months I started my own corporation and built it up. We had great people and some not-so-great people, but we enjoyed playing together. We got war-decced regularly because we were mostly a high-sec PVE corp, but thats OK. We accepted our role and dealt with it. I didn't cry and moan and rage-quit because our killboards looked like shit and we were losing ships all of the time.

CCP are not sell outs. They have no need to cheapen the game with changes like you suggest. EVE is one of the most successful P2P mmorpg in the west, obviously there's a great many people who enjoy the game for what it is.
There are plenty of "play it safe"/"please don't steal my pixels" type of games that currently flood the market, so it's ok if we have a small handful of games that offer something else for those of us with different tastes.

not to bash you monstermmo...but what most of these posters are saying is true.
You played for less than 48 hours, and died twice and quit. Would you do that in LOTRO? Would you do that in Hello Kitty Online? Even if it was in the game mechanics? I'm not going to reiderate all that was said..but you should reinstall, and find the guy that killed you..and send him a thank you note.
YOUR mindset is what caused the grief...how you responded to it. I'm not saying that their isn't bad people, but you do realize this is EvE, right? Have you not done any research whatsoever about this game? Hundreds of thousands of dollars have been stolen, years of scheming, alleged dev participation with a well known alliance....daily scamming, fake market orders...etc, etc.
I dont' know you personally or care to, but you must realize that if you play a game where this is allowed and then complain about it...do you see the futility with your actions?
I hope you find a game that is more to your suiting. Good luck.

Oh, no of course i didnt research it and find out that scams were like a major deal and people are a-holes all the time on that game, i did not know that.
And if i trialed LOTR and any other game and the community was crap right from the start youre damn right id quit. Playing online is almost as much about the community as it is about the game itself. Well ok actually i guess if the game was downright amazing i would stick it out more yeah. It was easier to ragequit since the game itself isnt more than clicking menus. This kind of behaviour is akin to jumping into a pool and complaining that you got wet.

Suicide ganking is consensual PvP in that it's virtually impossible to do if the target makes the minimal effort (aka "flicking that switch") to avoid it.

I've been playing for nearly 5 years and I've never been scammed, ganked or suffered a corp theft. (Nor have I ever scammed anyone or stolen from a corp. I have ganked a couple of times.) It's not at all difficult to avoid these incidents, it just takes a minimal amount of effort to do so.
I still don't get how one person equals "community."
I know for a fact that Eve has plenty of douche bags. I also know for a fact that Eve has plenty of great, nice players who are very fun to play with, and trust worthy to boot.
It is laughable that someone can let such a minor portion of the "community" represent the rest of the community.
Is it like being thrown in the pool and then complaining you got wet? I suppose...IF half of the pool was salt water (the assholes), and the other half was drinkable water (nice people).
reading this and eve'o forums for 6 years has taught me that there are at least 1-2 posts like this a week. I dont' know why I bother answering, I guess it was the earnest in the OP's statements. I guess it's b/c other games aren't structured to allow certain types of behaviors. New players get killed in hi sec or get asked for 1 mil isk with the promise of 2 mil isk return...I guess it's just a "cultural shock" in the gaming sense.
I just don't understand how people can purchase, install, make a character(which takes much longer now), go through the 2-3 hour tutorial and not even make an attempt to educate themselves about the nature of a game. I'm not referring so much to the OP, but in general. I just installed PoTBS not long ago, but I still read the forums for about a week and got a sense of the game...knowing there is PvP in it.
This is the same nonsense on the DF forums, it's all the exact same psychoanalyzing, "are people that gank in game RL criminals, should they're be faster concorde response..blah blah blah."...knowing full well....they can and WILL be killed.
On a positive note, the most constructive criticism i've seen...is why don't mission fits require PvP mods? Pertinent ingame changes that would possible help people that have no experience at all with PvP...make the transition.
Staying around competent, knowledgable and active players is the best advice I can give you OP. If you choose not to return, know that you missed a great game, that possibly wasn't never designed for you.
Best of wishes.

I just started playing EvE here on Saturday and thanks go out to Icelander for the 21-day trial.
The hardest part of the whole experience this past weekend was that the download from the site. After the character customization, and all the personal tweaks that I did to my new character and got myself launched into the game has been really good.
The help channel for the noobies has been lively and informative, I already been podded by the NPC pirates once already...lol (to no stupidity of my own). Right now I have 4 ships in the hangers and a bunch of goodies already piled up. The best thing that happened to me this weekend was when someone sent over 10 million isk to me...no note, no message, nothing...I didn't even ask anyone in any of the chats. It was just given to me.
TBH...it was a very pleasant surprise. Right now I am still sitting over 11 million isk and still growing. The tasks (jobs) that are offered by the NPC’s are good and to some point a challenge to learn. Some of the jobs are kinda redundant, but I really like the time frame bonus isk that you can get if you come in and complete the quest under the allotted time.
The only thing that I have to say that I am having a hard time wrapping my brain around is the real time training that the game promotes. I guess as time goes on, I will come to understand and appreciate this method of training compared to the instant gratification from other MMO’s that are out on the market.
Otherwise, I really like the freedom that you get from the game to choose the path that you want to take your character on and the choices that you make do have an impact on what is offered down the road to you.
I look forward to many months of enjoyable play time in this space sandbox.

Incursions are a big step in this direction. You need omni tanking mixed-role fleets with good organisation.

Unlike in other MMO where character progression and gear is main focus of the game, in EVE those are merely resources.
You will meet multi-million skill point characters flying same ships as you are flying now as a new player. There isn't any linear progression in EVE, just different challenges requiring different resources and approach.
Think of everything as tools you could use to achieve your goals.

to further expound upon this ...you can train all races weapons and ships. Therefore it is entirely possible to fit a battleship with "healing" mods, electronic warfare(which comes in four different flavors), etc. Not just guns/missiles. Skill progression allows you access to these. If you train your racial ships/weapons only..you will be able to fly 9-10 different ships with various kits.
In a few more weeks, if you choose, you could train frigates/cruisers of another race. Now you have double. Skillpoints therefore are nothing more than keys. You may come to find out that you prefer smaller/cheaper ships even though you can fly big, mean, evil capital ships.
Just run a mission or two, get familiar with how turrets work, basic things. Find some friends..you'll be fine. Oh, you might get killed a few times, don't panic. It happens to all of us.
Cya on some random gate, hopefully you are in a hauler and alone...:P

No .. not letting new players have fun is the fault of the developer. New players are under no obligcation to do research and hard work. It is a GAME.
In fact, you say it yourself "hard work and learning". if that is a prequsite for this game, then no doubt this game is niche and "not a game for everyone" or even most people.
Obviously the tolerance of frustration has to be high even to attempt to enjoy this game. Most people may rage-quit after a few wipes on a boss of a "normal" MMO (and generally i will quit if the group cannot even deal with trash).
Thank you both Gdemami and CactusJack for the additional information. Like I said, I have to unlearn what I have learned from the other MMO's that I have played in the past.
Tonight is going to be day 3 for me and lets see what I can get done...I might go back to the start and knock out some of the starter missions just to get some additional isk, and rep. Been reading the EvElopedia in between work assignments and got a deeper understanding of the game and the mechanics.
Also, been reading up on the fourms as well and getting some good tips and help on finishing up and building rep with the NPC's.
I might as well put my two cents in as well. As for new players I am one, just started the trial two nights ago ( I've had two trials in the past one 3 years ago and 1 one year ago so this is my third of course) and I like the idea of no switch for off pvp. I'd say for having open world pvp, it gives a challenge and I suppose that can be a killjoy for some but honestly I think its all a great expirence, not to mention I can't play hours on end so the skill leveling system is incredible. (leveling mechanics to get jury rigs right now ).
The Tutorial system is great I can't complain, though I'm not entirely sure where I will be going after I do all the career advancement tutorials, I'm sure I'll figure it. BUT anyways back to the topic, if there was some game I could compare this topic too where the company tried to change things up a bit and make a few extra bucks and things went terribly wrong and ruined the game...hmm what could that be....can't seem to rememb....ahh yes Star Wars Galaxies and SOE. Although the changes SOE did to SWG were very drastic unlike a simple pvp off switch it would still affect the base community thats supported it for several years and drastic change is just not an option for such a conrete community. BTW the community has been great from what I've noticed anyways, lots of help and aside from having a crappy community like one of the above posters said, every game has them and WoW is chalk full of them since every asshat and their grandmother could play the game with half a brain. True story.
And anyways as for the pvp...I look foward to doing some bounty hunting
"And as for the record, I obviousely didn't read the very first post :X but I'm coming from the same sort of sitatuation as he is and this is mostly a reply to whoever said lets have a turn off switch for pvp. "

Eve doesn't really compare to your standard mmo model so hard to give a relation to one.
What you do in eve is what u want. Wnat to mine a system dry do that. Want to explore the eve galaxy(huge btw) do that. Want to join or form a corporation and try and take over the galaxy do that.
As has been said play through the career agent missions and they'll set u on the right path to get u going aswell as giving u some decent isk and gear to start with.
Best advice i can give is read the tutorials when they come up(u can also repeat them whenever u want). 90% or so of the questions u see in rookie help can usually be answered in the tutorials

Missions are terrible. I can't conceive of anyone actually enjoying them for heir own sake, although some people claim to.
That said, if all you want is to endlessly grind PvE quests, why go to a game that's explicitly a PvP sandbox? If I subscribed to WoW and whined that it didn't allow me the freedoms that EVE does, whilst saying that I wasn't interested in quests and raids, then the existing peoples would be justified in questioning why I was playing WoW in the first place.
EVE isn't your kind of game, and it probably never will be, any more than a steakhouse is likely to have a good vegetarian menu. Why do you keep coming back to this forum to complain about it? It seems like a waste of time at best.
Even with the trolls and disgruntled newbies, this is a great thread. From what i've seen it completely depends on the attitude of the person playing. As a word of advice, dont take losses too seriously/personally. Usually if i kill a new player and they convo me to ask questions and learn, i'll throw a few mil their way to replace their loss. The better the attitude you have, the more respect you'll gain from the community.

high sec suicide ganking: hmm.... it's like the RL police won't respond in time when you get shot right outside police station.
the bottom line is that, some of the griefing and scamming is allowed in Eve because (i think) the dev wants to make it more interesting. IMO, the game will be boring if majority of it is fool proof.
Eve does have a steep learning curve though, you have to read a lot, ask a lot of questions and think a lot. last year, I tried to plan to setup a moon mining operation for my small corp. The amount of planning and research that we as a corp has to do is crazy. Thank god for all the third party programs like eFit, evemon and stuff.
So again, Eve is not for everyone, and it is definitely a game that requires a lot of reading and thinking. But that's just the way I like it, to keep little kids that just want to find the best gear with max level running out to click some buttons.
oh, and btw, you don't have to have a lot of skill points to be useful in PvP IMO, when I was a n00b, i just manage to fit a fast frigate with some Electronic warfare mod and my whole job in the fleet is to jam the target ship radar while flying in orbit of the target ship.

You do realize that missions are not the only PVE content in the game right? (or did you mean that you can't run quests and enjoy them?)
I mention that because you could say that industry, exploration, wormhole running, market trading, mining, transportation of goods and even scamming are all PVE content.
From my viewpoint EVE has tons of PVE content for players to occupy their time with and never have to fire a shot to pursue any of them. (though some folks may try to shoot at you)

Please dont get me wrong ive already gone over how impressed i am by the game being pretty cool for just clicking on menu's.
Thanks for that post tho.

Great post.
This kind of behaviour is akin to jumping into a pool and complaining that you got wet.
"Mr. Rothstein, your people never will understand... the way it works out here. You're all just our guests. But you act like you're at home. Let me tell you something, partner. You ain't home. But that's where we're gonna send you if it harelips the governor." - Pat Webb
Exactly. I don't play SWG anymore. The developers changed it. I would play it (as would many others) if SOE returned the game to it original vision.
Gaming since Avalon Hill was making board games.
Played SWG, EVE, Fallen Earth, LOTRO, Rift, Vanguard, WoW, SWTOR, TSW, Tera
Tried Aoc, Aion, EQII, RoM, Vindictus, Darkfail, DDO, GW, PotBS
Suicide ganking is consensual PvP in that it's virtually impossible to do if the target makes the minimal effort (aka "flicking that switch") to avoid it.
Give me liberty or give me lasers

Again, thanks for the help!

Looking for that next MMO
Also doing the free trial again and has improved since the last time i did.
"What you do in eve is what u want" ... really?
I want to go through some PvE content and have fun. The missions do not give me that.
Give me liberty or give me lasers
