Fast travel is fine as long as there's still an incentive to go out and travel across the world (dynamic events may come into play here, we'll see) and we don't end up sitting in the one big central hub waiting for dungeon groups to pop up.

I was curious so I actually went and watched that video.  For a little while, I was very impressed.  OMG!  Look at him pointing at that little dot and saying that's a sniper!

Then I realized... oh.  Hey.  That sniper probably isn't going to be sniping you from that far away.  I'll admit, if you're playing Tatooine and every few steps you drop because you just got head-shotted by a sniper your computer resolution doesn't even let you see, I'd be rather impressed with the game for actually being the first MMORPG to get long distance sniper rifles right.

It would be annoying as hell, but it would be cool in its own sort of 'Wow, they had balls to do that' sort of way.  Too bad it's probably not going to be like that.  If it is, I'd appreciate if somebody dropped me a line and said 'That video where the developer had a mostly static camera, and was looking at the world from developer view?  That's all real!  IT'S REAL MAN.  It's just like that in the game, and those tiny enemies far away?  They're shooting at you for hours while you zig zg across the dunes trying to get to them!'  Because if that's all true, I might just pick up SW:TOR even with a sub. :T  Since so far all I've seen is developer viewpoint mostly static screenshots of environments, I'll wait to be impressed. :x  Show me a video with really long draw distance where it's actually somebody playing the demo?  There's been demo stations of SW:ToR, so surely you can pick out at least one, to prove I should be more hyped?

    so I watched the vid, and at first this "blue mist" the op was talking about  was so far away i thought it was the freaking sky. then the guy moved a little bit and WAY off in the distance, a castle formed. the op's argument is invalid. i won't go into why, I don't feel like typing what I've seen people say, and then the OP just say that those are not valid arguements. {mod edit}

Most people seem to be missing this when they talk about fast travel.  There is an incentive to walk from place to place because events are intended to be stumbled across, even on subsequent visits to the same area.  There's no guarantee an otherwise quiet area doesn't actually have an event lurking in the background waiting to be triggered.  You may not see it the first time through, but you may on a second or third visit.  Even then, you may come across part of an event chain that you never saw before, although you ran it to completion earlier.   With branching chains, you might simply discover a new branch altogether.

ANet will also be adding in new events on the sly.  They'll be putting in new ones in patches without disclosing it, so the only way to discover them is by wandering into it.  That likely won't happen if you fast travel everywhere.  Lastly, some events have triggers that are hidden or that don't clearly indicate what it is they are activating.  The only way to find out is by looking around, and that could mean walking all across the map.

There is plenty of incentive to walk from place to place, and I'm pretty certain that there are enough of us explorer types out there to keep most zones somewhat inhabited.  At last, ArenaNet is giving us armchair Magellans a reason to explore the world.  And not just for the first time, but repeatedly.  With the potential to discover something in the world that no one has seen yet, many of us will continue to crawl the landscape, months and years after the first time we've unfogged it on our map.

It's nice to have the option of fast traveling somewhere to meet with friends that we want to play with at a given moment.  Spending 20 or 25 minutes getting from one place to another simply to meet someone is just a drag.  Options are a good thing.  It never ceases to surprise me that so many people want fewer of them rather than more.

Thank you for making me feel a little less crazy.

When I want to explore, I run around and explore.

... but if I want to play with my friends, all that territory I have to pass by becomes an obstacle, rather than my friend.

Really, there are games out there which i dislike but i can still see it's qualities regardless. Claiming GW2 doesn't bring much to the fantasy MMO formula compared to existing and some to come games is rather bold. Many already answered to your post as nothing but trolling and i have little to add to those since they reflect my exacts thoughts and some more.

GW2 is good in many ways for fans, non fans, developers and so on. It will probably raise the bar for future games to start doing something good for a change instead copypaste old concepts and name them innovative. The amount of deceived MMO gamers is high for that same reason and it's no surprise they see GW 2 as their big fix.

Anet on the other hand is a valued dev team for the quality and originality of the first GW and their constant statments about ingame features and transparency about what they will do and what's done, give them even more credit.

Did I watch videos from a different game? I only ask because each of the videos I've watched makes the game progressively more appealing when compared to any other MMO I've recently followed. I've been watching a few too, since I really want something to move onto.

Everything I've seen and heard so far from the dev panels to the gameplay makes me want to play this game. I generally favour Eastern art styles but I admit the GW2 has grown on me so even that isn't a factor.

Ultimately though until I actually get my hands on the thing and play it I can't say whether it's a disappointment or not.

Ive come to recieve a good amount of entertainment out of retarded threads like this one.  To me it is a testament to this site.  No matter what game is released or upcoming, it will be bitched about relentlessly, no matter what it is.

Its already announced free to play. With anything from the new from the original guild wars sohuld give this game an absolute buy.

There was nothing revolutionary about tanks either. All they did was stick a gun on a motor with some metal plates. Oh wait...

EDIT: To clarify: something may seem simple and obvious, but even things you think are small can change a huge amount.

No 1 game will please everybody!

Once the majority of gamers learn this then the MMO genre can get back to growing in diversity.

Waiting for:EQ-Next, ArcheAge (not so much anymore)
    Now Playing: N/A
    Worst MMO: FFXIV
    Favorite MMO: FFXI

The most disappointing thing about GW2 is the lack of release date.  I want to know so I can start counting the days ffs!

Personally, I'll be disappointed for 2 reasons:

    1) The Rangers/Thieves probably won't get Jarate

    2) There probably won't be a defensive turret building class until the inevitable Ritualist class comes along with the Cantha expansion.

See what I did there? I'm turning the whole ANet blog mentioning TF2 on it's head. Instead of complaining that GW2 is just a generic/derivative MMO, I'm complaining that this is a generic/derivative TF2 clone!

    Sux2u GW2 fanboys!

Listen, I understand you may feel GW2 is not going to live up to your standards. I have the same feelings about SWTOR.

.However, I question why you are so passionate about GW2 being a huge disappointment. Honestly, it should be par for the course at this point, so no big deal if that is the case.

No, if you want passionate then you should hear me on vent after I read 50 posts about how great and revolutionary that GW2 or any new MMO is going to be. If you wanna know why I post, it's mainly out of bordem but the reason I feel the way I do is cause I am tired of people accepting such minimal improvement on our MMOs and acting like it's great that we are getting the same game over and over again. Rift is a prime example of my feelings. It's a clone of WoW and WAR in one and EVERYONE knows it but people still act like it's a great game. There are so many flaws that have been improved in WoW and WAR that Trion didn't think of adding before release that just shows we will have to wait years for Rift to be on par with the games it's cloneing.

So... you think GW2 is a minimal improvement on the traditional MMO?

    This is not a game.

Improvements are improvements and in such a stale genre like this they should be encourage.

And compared to most other games in the genre GW2 is a huge step forward.

No, everyone will not like it. Yes, they could have done it a lot more revolutionary.

But the fact remains: at least ANET tries to improve the genre. Few others even bother.

And comparing GW2 and Rift is just unfair, besides a silly mentioning of the world next gen have no one really said that Rift tried to do much different, most people already knew a year ago that it was pretty traditional and would use a lot of basics from games like Wow, but with a better character customization. If you were surprised that Rift is like it is you havn't payed attention, Trions idea was to create a game pretty much like Wow but with modern graphics and they did just that.

ANET is trying to change many of the constant in the genre, quests for one thing have been more or less the same since I first started playing Meridian 59: A questgiver in the city told me to go and kill 10 rats (first quest I ever did, really), I did so, went back to him and got a small reward and some XP. UO tried something slighly different, GW2 is trying the same.

No more full quests logs, just thta is something almost every MMO have suffered from since '96.

Have you seen any of the videos? Quests are still in the game, they just call them "Personal Quests" and act like they are different. Plus replacing more quests with Public Quest  .. oh I mean "Dynamic Events" isn't innovative. They took an idea from Warhammer and tried to based a game around it instead of making it apart of normal gameplay. Not innovative in any way, they just limit ways you can level.

Waitwaitwait. It all make sense now.

You're butthurt that they took a saturated MMO feature that you loved out of a game (quest grinding,)  and replaces it with a modified feature that appeared with limited success in another MMO!

And now you're venting your frustration by calling the game derivative!

    Double rainbow of sense!

Listening to the interviews with the devs it sounds like they made the game they wanted to make. Then took the time to put in elements that people are familiar with to teach people how their game works. Smart developers.
