No MMO ever is going to challenege WOW. its been 7 years now and it is getting boring.....give up. Just enjoy the MMO you play and stop this obsession with topping WOW.
I've been playing WoW on and off since the first open beta. While my guild has been waiting for new content to arrive, many of us have been playing rift. The other day, a few of us did a BWD run and I couldn't believe how much more dated the graphics looked to me.
You mention that WoW has been around 7 years. That's kind of the problem. It may continue to have the largest player base for a few more years, but the game is horrible to look at, and making insignificant changes to how the water looks doesn't really do much to alter that. Even Blizzard knows this, that's why they're working on a new MMO. The next couple of years will most likely give rise to a number of games that will challenge WoW. If you're an undeterred fanboy, good for you, but nothing lasts forever.
And what makes you think that millions of players play WOW for its graphics? its about gameplay and that is why WOW is the king and will remain on top in coming years. it has nothing to do with being a fanboy considering the longest i have played WOW was for 6 months last year. But i also do not live in denial and like to use logic from time to time.
As far as next couple of years giving rise to number of MMOS to challenege WOW, been there done that. Sorry not happening.
Sorry, but how is WoW gameplay "king"? It has no unique features that can't be found in other games. Advertising to casuals and momentum are the things that make WoW "king"
It's the "King" because of it's established, in-depth game play. WoW has a few things, but DEPTH is not one of them, almost all its features are as simple as possible Just look at all the features; raiding It's watered down raiding with "one way to win" bosses, limited to an extremely small number of people, and sequestered off into instances , BGs Really poor unbalanced PvP that doesn't matter because its basically an FPS server that has no bearing on the real game, piss poor compared to DAoC BGs , Arena Yay, something almost every MMO has had since 1999, valor/justice point system rewards aka, extra grind, factions a dumbed down simple version of something every MMO has had since 1997, proffesions ect ect a dumbed down simple version of something every MMO has had since 1997. It's highly developed and the uniqueness what uniqueness? It doesn't do anything that other games don't do better is the quality it has which no game has yet to be on par with you mean, smooth animations? Good to know what the bar for "quality" is now. No I'm not a WoW player, quite and gonna remain so, however not acknowledging their position is just plain ignorant. You claim that I'm ignorant, yet its clear from your post you've hardly played any MMOs.
All i read was DUMBED DOWN and lots of assumptions being passed as facts. A feature doesn't need to be deep to be good. As long as it is simple and works people will enjoy the game. WOW was released 7 years ago and only popular MMO in same genre was EQ. It is quite obvious that WOW did a lot of things right to pull so many players over the years. If not players would be still playing EQ a lot more than WOW. No surprise that even EQ went under drastic changes once WOW became insanely popular. It is time you take a hint maybe?
As a WOW player of almost 6 years, I"m affraid when SWTOR launches, it will be hard for me to keep playing WOW. As a fan of Star Wars and Bioware, these two things combined will probably put every game on hold. I believe the only Blizzard title i'll be playing by this years end if it releases this year, is Diablo 3...that's if i'm not too wrapped up in TOR.
Wildstar (2013) & Elder Scroll Online (2013)
Playing: Diablo 3, WOW, Far Cry 3 & X-Com.
Enjoyed: WOW 5 1/2 yrs, LOTRO 3yrs, GW 1/2yr, DFO 1yr, EVE Online 3yrs, and Huxley (Beta).
Failed to impress: GW2 3months, Tera Online 6 months (best combat system in any MMO I've played) STO 1/4yr, Aion 1/2yr, AoC 1yr, CO, Fallen Earth, DDO, EQ2 1/2yr, WAR 1/2yr, Lineage 2 and FF XI 1/2yr, FF XIV.

I thought the same thing about LOTRO as I am a LOTR fan (and SW fan, of the original movies, not the crap that came later). But then when I played the game it felt so shallow and on rail that I felt it did not catch the magic of the books nor the movies.
I think a similar thing will happen with this game. It is simply very dificult to capture the magic of these two massive IPs, specially if you are doing it the themepark way because Star Wars and the LOTR worlds cannot be depicted like a Themepark if you want to capture the depth and magic of the worlds described in the original media.

It's funny you bring up LOTRO, because I actually did put WOW on hold for almost half a year when it was beta and it launched and then played it off and on, but in the end...it didn't last.
I hope Bioware really shines with this MMO effort and really does bring something amazing to the MMO world. Here's to Hope.

You are reading way too much into things. These types say lots of things in a long day.
Move along, this isn't the vital info you seek.
Aha, that SW reference almost escaped me
But yeah, there is no vital info here. Just found it interesting that they say they will not be directly challenging WoW and then still hoping for 1 million subs and by subs I assume he does not mean box sales because for sure this game will sell 1 million boxes.

My bad, I forgot the *hand wave*. XD
I think no one can say how good TOR will go. It would just be ridiculous to claim to know. I bet Blizzard didn't expect 12 million players when they launched their game, either. And on top, I couldn't care less. If servers are active and fun, I don't NEED 12 millions. Why would I?
So there is no real info on an essentially totally meaningless question. Yeah, way to go, fans. XD

There will be a big difference between LOTRO and TOR. LOTRO had story, but it was text based and very limited to just the epic story line. The rest of the questing was the typical click NPC, hit accept and find the spot on the map, kill everything and return. Also LOTRO only had MPVP in one area. So no chance of open PvP or even BG type for those that like it. And last but not least, the combat was boring.
The only thing we know for a fact with TOR is the level of story in the game. It will make LOTRO look like a joke with the amount of lore and story put into the game. Yes it will be in a themepark setting, but there will be more than one way to complete your story. Three choices with every quest as to how to proceed complete with acted out VO in a dialogue scene. A chance to change your appearance as a sith along with titles that have to be earned. Multiple unique stories in the game, one for each class. With different ways to complete your story arc with different choices leading to different endings. A very large game universe with open worlds full of SW IP stuff to explore for SW fans. Just this small part of TOR will be much better than what LOTRO had/has.
All the other MMO stuff we will have to find out about as the game launch phase approaches along with game play after launch. But LOTRO is not even close to the gand scope of story and IP lore that will be in TOR. And as far as WoW, there is no reason to directely try to be a "WoW killer". Just to make the best game you can (everyone has an opinion on what that is obviously) to get as many boxes sold and gamers to sub.
How many people long for that "past, simpler, and better world," I wonder, without ever recognizing the truth that perhaps it was they who were simpler and better, and not the world about them? R.A.Salvatore
With all due respect this is a futile debate taking place here. Subscription wise NOTHING can or will ever come close to WoW. TOR will be a far better game than WoW in every aspect but people must realize that WoW's sub number is something abnormal, achieved under certain circumstances. Which are no more in todays MMO scene.
Personally i would prefer that the big mass of WoW's player base stays out of the game i will play for the next years. The reasons are obvious ones.
what are you people waffling on about!!!!! ALLLLL games of the rpg genre released in the last 5 years are wow clones or wow wannabee's
i think im getting a little tired of saying the same stuff lol.. wow is crap its always been crap and the fact its appealing to the simple minded is just ruining online gameing on a whole..
today's games are all crap. i can only think of one game worth playing and its not even an mmorpg.. thats right folks eveonline is the truest representation of a real massively multiplayer game we have.. its huge and it has the most players in a single server and its online and you cant really play it propperly unless you play it with others. and it looks fantastic and plays fantastic.
wow is simple boreing sludge. how so many people can love that game just boggles the mind. the whole idea of it is just alien to me.
swtor is just another wow clone with a starwars skin and nothing more.. ofcourse the wow players are going to play it, they will because wow is shit and they are all starting to realise just how toss wow is hence why they are all looking for another game which will be better than wow..
swtor wont be a better game than wow. but it will be a newer game than wow and thats all it needs to be a sucess.. it goes without saying that the starwars label is going to sell the game. more people will be dissapointed but more people will be content that they no longer have to play.
this isnt even worth talking about. wow's crap and swtor will be crap too. swtor is wow and wow is crap so that must mean swtor will be crap also lol
it looks crap.. no wait hang on it looks lovely and cartoony but when you watch it in play. it looks like it has a crap feel to it..
auto aim auto hit no missing static combat. rail guided quest chains tunnel shooter space option minigame.. crap crap crap crap..
im probably going to get a suspended account for this lol but some one has to speak their mind or we will just kee getting crap games.
wow sux devs should stop copying it. its ruining the online gameing industry.
I posted here yesterday, but honestly why hasn't this thread died off by now like the 900 billion others like it that have been posted everyday for oh lets see, eternity. I reiterate my point that this discussion is meaningless as you have no actual proof since one game is not yet released, therfore this whole thread continues to be based in pigheadedness and conjecture, not in fact.
WoW, who damn who gives a damn about WoW ? People who like it should keep playing it. End of discussion.
Meanwhile SWTOR is hopefully a success, i.e. gets its 1/2 million players. If it gets more, fine for Bioware. But it would have very little influence on the single player, like for example anyone in this thread.
A single server can maybe handle 10,000 players. So even with 1/2 million players, TOR would need at least 50 servers, and it shouldnt be much of a problem to find a server with a solid population to enjoy the game.
So really the only people who should actually be bothered about TOR being a "WoW killer" at all are the investors. For the players, they have NOTHING to gain from this.
1. If WoW would actually get killed, that would be one game less on the market. Not good for players.
2. If WoW would get killed, i.e. a large number of players would switch from WoW to TOR, WE WOULD HAVE TONS OF WOW PLAYERS IN TOR. Again, thats bad. FYI, the WoW crowd arent exactly the nicest and most mature kind of players around.
So yeah, I hope if there is a WoW killer, I hope its not TOR. I want a nice community. Not a bunch of gearscore cretins.
Personally I hope TOR will attract many people who havent played a MMO before. That would very likely lead to a much nicer community.
I dont understand why are ppl so eager to top wow...seriously
i played wow in retail for 5 years. never found content as easy to clear as Cataclysm. for me the game killd himself. also my entire guild quiting help. eheh
anyways.. i must admit im not 1 bit concerned about Tor trying to top wow. I am certenly gona buy the game and subscrive! right into day 1!u can bet!
tor is done amazingly! the polish done is absolutely beutiful. as many of you just roll over other games i dnt expect ppl to understand. im on the Arts business and matters to me a LOT. and i assure no other game feels the way iv seen TOr screens.
every update seems to pull me more into him every time.. this is a game that sells himself for quality ppl.7
i tried rift in beta.. just.. sigh* what a lame excuse for an MMo, was that?! what was gona kill wow?
just stop trying to "defeat" wow. wow comunity is a shit! and mostly kids.
anyway stop been offtopic. what i mean is that i couldnt care less about it! this game totally rocks! im sure gona play and sub from day 1!!!!
cant u see what an amazing game this is becoming?!
also gona rock on GW2 eheheh. my 3 future epic games =D 1º TOR 2º GW2 3rth BF3 YAY
EA is proclaiming that TOR isn't challenging WoW because it's the respectable thing to say of your competition in the corporate world. The truth is that every MMO developer dreams of at least challenging, if not toppling WoW. It would be a terrible blunder of arrogance for an executive of a major game corporation to alienate potential customers by pulling a Joe Namath and making a guarantee that TOR will be the new king of the MMO realm. It is in EA's best interest to be civil toward a rival game that has long established itself as the top P2P MMO, when their game has yet to even enter the open beta phase.
There is no doubt that EA is hoping to make a run at Blizzard's cashcow. EA and Activision/Blizzard are the two biggest game publishers on earth. Trust me, EA wants to steal the MMO pie from its top competitor. I would say that this sounds like something of a shift in gears, as last year's E3 interviews with BW developers contained the phrase WoW almost as often as interviews with Blizzard employees. Perhaps this is why a corporate executive, who is a little more versed in handling PR, did the interview rather than one of the game's developers. Perhaps someone at EA finally decided that Daniel Erickson's annoyingly snarky personality wasn't doing their marketing strategy any favors.
With the amount of money EA has invested in TOR, you can bet that there is an internal research team dedicated to performing and examining all kinds of market research, and making projections for what the company can expect out of the game. There is both an enormous amount of hype and vitriol surrounding TOR, and much of the latter is a direct result of comparisons between TOR and WoW. Perhaps something that EA's market research team is reading in the tea leaves is telling them that it would be beneficial to avoid fueling any associations with WoW.
As I've stated before, my personal projection for TOR is 1-1.5 million boxes sold, and around a 50-60% subscription retention rate by the end of the first year, which EA has stated that those numbers would be considered a success, but those figures don't begin to compare to Blizzard's pet monster. Only time will tell.
Since they are two completely different Genres (fantasy vs Sci-Fi, arguably the king of Sci-Fi) I dont see why people are bothering with the comparrison.
There are some MMO players who prefer sci-fi, there are some who prefer fantasy & some who enjy both. Its the ones who like both that EA will hope to get away from WAR.
Hardcore fantasy fans are more likely to be lured away to other Fantasy games like Rift etc.
The constant, repetitive determination from the MMORPG community for a 'wow killer' gives me a headache. There's no such thing as a wow-killer, wow will kill itself eventually. Nothing can do it for us.
TOR will be popular, the end.
'Compete', and 'Kill', are not the same thing. If you think the saber rattling for mmo's is bad, you'd really pull out your hair if you read articles and news bits on upcoming MMA fights, or pre-game fantasy football hype. It's not going away because people love a good battle cry.
In a perfect world, there would be no such thing, but this isn't a perfect world, and a good thing too because that would be boring. So yeah, not the end.

First, grammar and spelling.
Then, I dont think TOR will top WoW. I'm not saying this because I think TOR will be a bad game by any means, but that TOR simply can not go from 0 to 12 million in 10 seconds flat. Its impossible. The reason WoW was so popular is because it opened up lesser known ideas in ways that new people to the genre could understand them. Now that WoW has become so mainstream with actors, musicians, and other popular figures playing it, its going to be hard for anything to top it as long as its still going.
You can not compare GW2 and TOR saying one will beat the other because of the different payment styles. TOR is likely P2P, GW2 is B2P. What this means to the consumer is that they can play both at the same time with zero extra financial burden minus GW2's box cost. People are likely to pay for one mmo at a time, but many would play more if money were no issue.
But I do not think TOR is some amazing new game, or what you claim it to be. It is pretty close to what we have been getting lately, just done better. Full game voiceovers will get real old real fast. I will admit they are likely going to have more content than say Rift or DCUO and CO. The fact of the matter is though is that its just the same old stuff.
Games such as Archeage is where the genre is heading. And hopefully pushing ideas and the limits such as Archeage hopes to do will break this long standing plague that has been on the MMO field.

2 points!!
1 / why do people feel the need to be school teachers all the time. you cannot make people be naturally good at spellings and grammer so stop trying. some people really just cant do it, time to accept that and move on matey.
2/ why dont you just say swtor wont top wow because swtor doesnt have 6 years of extreme advertising campaigns under its belt like wow has.. wow is on the tv every god damn day.. see my point.
and please please wind your neck in with the whole school teacher antics, where do you guys get off trying to grammer police the interweb lol. its so unbecoming!!!
and just to back you up. swtor is exactly the same as we have been getting since the launch of wow.. and thats wow clones. swtor is indeed another cast off of wow.

2nd. i wasnt comparing TOR and GW2 , i said i wana play them both. lol? <- i sugest u learn to read.
and i agree on rift.. i played beta and i raelly thought the game was severely boring. even more then wow became with time

Please check the defenition of Genre, Science Fiction & Fantasy. A Fantasy fanatic who loves playing an elven mage (a fantasy fan) is not going to find something to satisfy them in SWTOR unless they happen to also like science fiction.
I also said two different Genres not "two different games" which is what you got out of what I typed somehow..
It is what it is, someone who loves reading Tolkien is not automatically going to be interested in a Star wars knovel, however they may well be interested in magician, tomes of fire or one of many other fantasy based books.
Where did this mentallity of desiring the downfall of something successful come from? All these people who want to see WoW 'dethroned' as the most popular MMO need to get over it. I'm rooting for SW:ToR to do well, but not because I want it to kill WoW. Rather I'd like to see it be successful because I'm a fan of Star Wars and I dig BioWare games.
So yeah, they shouldn't be challenging WoW outright. They should be their own game and make their own success and not worry about pulling subs away from other companies. Once you start trying to directly compete with someone, you begin adopting their style. If anything innovative is going to come out of BioWare, it's going to be because they weren't trying to compete with the big game on the block.

My gaming blog

Retired: EVE, SWG, STO, EQ2, Ryzom, AO, LotRO, FFXI
Currently Awaiting: SWTOR, TSW, ArcheAge
And hopefully pushing ideas and the limits such as Archeage hopes to do will break this long standing plague that has been on the MMO field.
nooo they are not two diffrent games. they are two sides of the same coin. they arte both fantasy. one is sort of supposed to be set in space but it isnt really and the other is well set on the ground in the past supposedly. see the point!!! they are both fantasy genre games. fantasy is the unvellievable and both games possibility of realism is unbelievable so they are both fantasy games. its just a fantasy of the gamers that swtor will top wow.
Is that the same analyst that forecast DA2 would sell over 4.5Million? (lol)
So was DA2 a failure ?
Anyway, SWTOR wont top WoW for a very trivial reason: It wont release in Asia.
There is simply no chance in hell SWTOR can top WoW without being present (and strong) in the asian market as well.
1st. i am not english, therefore i cba to have good gramar and spelling. im really sory about that, couldnt even if i wanted.
2nd. i wasnt comparing TOR and GW2 , i said i wana play them both.
Star Wars is NOT Science Fiction. Its Fantasy.
Yeah there are no elves and dwarves. You dont need them. Alice in Wonderland had no elves either, but still its Fantasy.
And there are mages, and magic. They just call the mages Jedi, and the magic is called the Force.
Science Fiction is a genre that explores how the future might be.
Fantasy is a genre that explores fantasies, especially magic.
So yes, Star Wars clearly has some Science Fiction elements, but the core is Fantasy. The "Force" is a clear variant of magic.
Thats why Star Wars called is SF Fantasy, or Science Fantasy, or Space Opera - a subgenre of Fantasy, not of Science Fiction.
