Meh, to be hoenst I prefer static combat in an MMO over the alternative any day. Shooter mechanics feel far to floaty in MMO form, not to mention how annoying it is to track someone while they're bunny hopping around, when you have lag to contend with.

As you will all see by my posting history, I do not post often but have been around for some time now.  I played SWG since early 2005 and like most fell in love with it and hated what the NGE brought.  After seeing this live video it reminded me of playing SWG NGE being played by an absolute idiot who knew nothing at all about Star Wars.

My question is though, how the hell is this game any better than the current version of SWG other than some more diolouge for your character.  The graphics and game play looks almost identicle to what you have on SWG right now.  Why the hell would I pay for this.  I know I will get responses of "well then just don't play", etc...  but the question is what the hell makes this better than SWG in its currents state then this other than the diolougue???  Honestely, WHAT???

Overall it looked great. Loved the landscape and Jawa companion. Didn't like a few things:

    - Short agro range on equal levelled mobs

    - Silly animation of the speeder bike thingy: leaning over while turning should be in the opposite direction to counter the momentum like on real bikes. Now it looks like it is tipping over all the time.

    - A whole lot of surface clipping on the tail of that bison-like creature towards the end.

    - No cries and grunts when taking damage, only in the dying animation. Just a tiny twitch in reaction to a vicious bite doesn't look so convincing.

Hope they get to polish it a lot more before launch.

on the plus side tatooine is less of a boring waste land than swg however i'm sorry but the assertion that this i wow in space...esepcially the combat is very true. fluid or not the combat is uninspiring. why don't force push useres interact with world objects instead of spawning a rock? seriously it's gonna be a good star wars game if only because theres nothing else on an mmo scale to compare to it. I will probably play after to retail box is discounted and quit after the free 30 days unless the community is really that engrossing

    so say we all

What makes it better? Maybe the fact that TOR will be a concise experience, and not Frankenstein's Monster?

If you have already came to that conclusion, I don't think anyone can change your mind.

I assume you read up on the game, how it works, watched the live demo, among other things.  And you came to this opinion.  You seem...jaded, by the last line in your first paragraph.  That's fine. You may not enjoy the game, nor like where it's going.  It happens.

Hopefully, the combat we saw is a result of a few people, only pushing enough buttons to give a demo; would good players do it this way or would we see kiting/ranged tactics/movement?

We won't know for sure until it launches.

Well seeing as how most abilities were designed to be used on the move, even ones with dynamic effects like blocking,  the combat being "static" is something you'll likely see a lot of in demos and with new players.  That isn't always representative of what you'll see in say... a PvP scenario with people who had a chance to level up their own characters.

Videos looked good, with some small caveats,  but I've also seen enough of SWTORs combat to know this isn't all there is.

You need to check your perscription,  SWG has, and never will in any way compare graphically with TOR. I sir DID play SWG from beta up till NGE, and this in no way reminds me of TOR.

They stated during the live demo that the graphics had been turned down due to bandwidth issues at E3, even turned down they look tonnes better than SWG. There are plenty of other gamelay videos kicking around that look plenty better than the live stream for proper comparison.

Honeslty, I am one of those that loved SWG and hated what it became with the NGE.  Am I expecting a new sandbox Star Wars experience?  The answer is NO.  Would I love that?  Absolutely but I am not stupid enough to hold out hope that it would ever happen.  I love Star Wars and all that Bioware has created with the ip previously.  What I am hoping for is an experience where I feel I am a part of the SW universe, etc.  in an MMO.  From what I saw of this video though, it just really looks like a revamp of SWG in its current form, meaning SWG going the WOW route.  I log into SWG from time to time and seeing the video looked like it could have been taken right from the current incarnation of SWG.  If that is what I want, I would just rather log into SWG than buy into this.  I was hoping for a different game other than just the diolouge and paths (which I can choose in SWG by myself and don't need voice overs for).  Can you honestly look at the video and tell me it is all that different than the current SWG???  If so, then I am missing something for sure.

Well lucky for you SWG is still there... for now.

Looking at *these* videos you only get to see a small part of the combat,  but if you take into consideration,  no auto attack, different mechanics for each class,  different specs for each class and hybridization of each class,  alignment systems aside from a faction system, abilities and gear for those specific alignments,  the cover system,  jumping that is an actual jump and not an emote,  true LOS detection,  dynamic blocking and parrying...    this is just having to do with combat mind you....

yeah, the customization is so much better than the original SWG, so right (sigh)

That damn lil jawa better be packing a rocket launcher.

All good nitpicking points, my apprentice. (and welcome back btw). To add my own worries to the mix, they have talked up the quest giver voice overs quite a bit, but notice what he did while his character was experiancing one? He decided that was the perfect time to talk to us. I'm sorry to say I think that is going to be how many people treat all this hard work, hard work that actually limited their dev team from bringing us some other game features, they will just ignore it. They will get up and grab a sandwitch, or check their email, or have a slash, (or worst just space bar out) then just come back and follow the quest marker from point A to point B. Though really that is more a criricism of the modern day MMOer's mindset rather that the game itself.

Also as to combat looking static, yeah I agree it does. That is always been one of the major problem of games involving ranged combat. It always boils down to your toon and the world mob stadinding point blank and just firing or punching away at each other because the game AI does not react logically. Even when it comes to player vs player they usually just circle one another until one of them is down. It looks like Bioware is no more able to figure out how to get around this major stumbling block than all the other games that have come before. About the only predominatly ranged combat game I can think of that had combat moves (and traps) that could counter this kind of behavior was ...and I actually hate to make this example... Classic Star Wars Galaxies.

Oh well. I'll take static combat over a game where you just bunny hop around like a couple of brain damaged rabbits on L.S.D. any day. >clicky<

This was basically my greatest fear realised. I am now quite dissapointed with the obvious direction of the game.

I may buy it and play through the bounty hunter's story but it has definitely lost priority to me Vs my other most anticipated title which is Battlefield 3.

Looked fine. Nothing special about the combat imo. I'll still buy and play the game though not impressed with the footage. Not like the awesome cinematic trailer they just released...but that's a given. My main complaint.....get someone worth a shite to demo your damn game....I don't understand why a 40 minute demo has 30 minutes of the player travelling over a fuggin desert on a speeder. Tatooine is huge....great...I get it....now, show me something else already.

Well you can always go back and... eh... well no,  you can't.  The combat was always pretty piss poor in SWG, even pre-NGE.

You asked how it was better than SWG as it is NOW,  I gave you just some of the reasons, and then you try and compare it to SWG THEN.

The mixture of classes was great, sure,  but talk about monotony....  spin groups were terrible.  In the end,  SWG as you want it to be is no more, and SWG in its current form is light years behind what BioWare is putting together,  save for possibly the space combat,  which BioWare shall grow - in time.

Actually yes he can, though how he can isn't allowed to be discussed on these forums.

People are going like or dislike this game for their own reasons. I'd advise not getting into the Classic SWG vs SWTOR argument, Masked. It just undermines any rational criticism on your part. What SWTOR is or will be has "bleep" all to do with another game.

I hear you bro and I hope that this game is great and I know that I will be playing it on day one.  I guess my point was that looking at the video, it just made me see SWG in its current form and not much anything else.  I know that it is not the same game for sure, but it just had the same feel from what I saw and if that is the case, why waste the money if I can play that now.  Just my 2 cents is all.

True, for example you could see in the live demo no shadows at all.

People are playing other games, but that's not going to stop them from chiming in on TOR. Things are going to get much worse as the launch date gets closer and closer. Post launch, it's probably going to get so bad on these forums, that anyone with a squeamish personality will be better off steering clear of anything TOR related.

    This is nothing ;)

    This is the sad truth.

Honestly, if you want to really enjoy the game, don't go to the forums post launch. DO NOT... just enjoy, read some guides online by the knowledgable and fun-folk and enjoy yourself in game. Going to the forums is like a virus or disease that spreads - and the whine always outweighs the good posts.

That said, so far the forum has been pretty good here... but I fear its not launch time yet and I suspect what I say will be true when that time comes :(
