I'm a web developer. I've created 100's of websites, some with reasonable traffic, others with hardly any.
All of them get 'attacked' almost constantly, usually email spammers trying to use my sites feedback forms to distribute unsolicited emails.
I have several servers and veiwing my server logs, every server is constantly being hit by people trying to access the ssh root login.
What I'm trying to get across to you is that this behaviour is rife on the Internet. Incarceration or fines are no deterrent to these people.
It's pointless putting the blame on 'hackers' or 'script kiddies'. Yes they're an inconvenience, but in these days where so much of our life revolves around the Internet and online services, isn't it time the service providors shoulder the responsibilty to ensure this type of thing doesn't happen?
Mr Web Developer, please drop some wisdom on us. How does one ensure this type of thing doesn't happen? Considering nothing is 100% secured period. No security is flawless or hack proof. Nothing to do with the internet is secure or safe or can it be made safe.
The most popular security software programs are very easy to get a copy of and make your own private network and sit and learn how to break it. You know how I know this, this is how we test Network security system for the company I work. When its time for us to get a new one, we create a developer network and try hacking into it with all the ways that we know.
Please get this thought your heads, COMPUTER SECURITY IS NOT AND NEVER WILL BE 100% secure. PERIOD. No matter how much knowlege you have, or how much money you can throw at it, your computer security is hackable.
Please stop blaming the companies, you act like these companies just put a computer on the internet with no security in place. Wake up, use common sense. I am willing to bet that SONY has millions upon millions of dollars invested in their security system and it can still be hacked.
Microsoft the software giant has been hacked and are you going to tell me that Microsoft must have bad security setup?
Hmm, lets see just one area where Sony failed... the biggie here would seem to be NO ENCRYPTION on personal data - that's a childs mistake. Should I blame the hackers because of Sony's failure to adequately encrypt sensitive data?
This particular incident with CCP appears to have been a DDOS attack. A high profile company like this should PLAN for a DDOS attack, there are ways of dealing with all but the worst DDOS attacks these days.
You are right, COMPUTER SECURITY IS NOT 100% secure.
The right approach is to PLAN for DDOS attacks, plan for your sensitive data getting into the wrong hands, plan for that rogue employee leaving a trojan in your system!
Of course, you don't need to plan this way - just lock up all the hackers, that would work (sarcasm).
IT IS GOING TO HAPPEN - JUST BE READY FOR WHEN IT DOES

locking up hackers does work though.. today they arrested a member of LulzSec and with luck, his computers will contain data that will lead to further arrests.... as for protecting a system, there is only so much that can be done.. without totally isolating a network from the Internet, which.. if you intend to carry out business on the internet.. is impractical, CCP did the right thing.. when the DDOS attack reached a certain threshold they took their network offline.. . as for Sony.. well hopefully the various other MMO companies will have learned a few lessons from that.. i would hope that Sony has at least. But in the meantime. seeking out the Hackers and locking them up is probably the only really effective remedy..

you are naive, if you think locking up hackers will solve anything you really live on a world on everything is rainbows and unicorns, locking then up will not make it stop, it can just for the shear dare get even worse, hackers do it not for money, they do it for knowledge and to be know, if anotehr hacker know what you did and what you can do for then it worth a lot more then anything, plus lulz sec from what i take notice right now is a lot more then 3 4 guys, and a lot of then don't live on the same country. but hey just be happy if fbi seize some servers who can take you favorite site or game out because they want to try to hunt a person down who they can even get close or prove its really him.
also take notice a lot of hackers know each otehr over the net, so chances for one hacker know the real name and living place of anotehr hacker is pretty slim. another thing, even if they are locked up tehy will leave soon after when fbi or anotehr company hire then to work to keep they network secure, or you really think all network security peeps are school boys who never hacked a thing on his live? maybe some, but I can sure tell you they are not the top dogs.

It works how?
You can't lock up every hacker. There's a new one born every minute. Some, if not most hackers operate from countries outside the laws and jurisdiction of their targets.
Also it SHOULD never work - imagine the complacency that would leave.
This world is becoming increasingly more reliant on computers and online information. Not having to constantly improve your security just leaves a gaping hole ready for a future armageddon.
Of course, hackers when caught need locking up, but that should never take any responsibility off of service providors for not doing their utmost to secure your data in the first place.
dont do the crime if you csnt do the time, it applies to bouth sides of this questions i think, Sony and Lulz have to do there time now. Also if i am right are not most of Lulz in there late teens or early twentys the time of life when one thinks he knows it all, If that is true then thye will make a mistake <becouse> they are <think they know it all> so smart and skilled. I guess when life hits them with the 2by4 beteen the eyes they will learn that they may not be as smart as they think. There is alwasy someone faster, smarter, stronger out there...so look out.

Always? Sure, if you have an infinite population to draw from. Other wise, at any given time, there is someone who is fastest, smartest, strongest ect. Not to mention, that if they aren't after money, and know even the basics of op sec, its MUCH more difficult to track them down. Thats especially true because those working for government (just about any government) do not tend to be the best in many of the technical fields involved.
Simply because one can throw millions or billions of other peoples money at a problem, doesn't mean one is going to get the best solution to a given problem, or the best people for that matter. On the other hand, as I stated before, simply because one can "hack" a given system/network, doesn't mean that one should. But going into hysteria over these types of things, simply plays into the politicians hands.
op!with the way smartphone service provider it will get way worst before it get better.for now the wired industry is targetted but the may problem here is wireless in lot of country!basicly the wireless iindustry is like the golbin in wow!dont know what i talk about .check on youtube.basicly it is greed pure and simple and if fcc or crtc check the technoworld a bit they would see that the issue here is just money it has nothing to do with being max cap.it is only an excuse to justify their practice, worst a lot of city in usa and some in nc tried to do the RIGHT thing and put wireless network in their city .what happened they were sued by the same corp that said they were maxed .i dont get it if a corp is maxed (cant take more costumer because of bandwith cap)why would a nc city be sued by the wireless industry?i dont have to respond to that you know full well why.it is a bipolar monopoly.the only difference is the fact that many corp have it,but the simple fact is in this mather it is one of the only area that is a monopoly,oh corp will whiune etc but in the end if fcc said why are your friend suing nc city if you cant follow up the demand?simple answer is thwey have a good monopoly verizon is aranged with att, sprint etc all the major and it is stable price wise, garanted overpriced (compred to cable)why wouldnt they sue city (hell city are trying to help the citizen but get sued by industry dont know about you but being sued for doing the right thing should be illigal at fcc or crtc.but then no surprise there when those crtc and fcc guys get out of there they will need boss ,and att, verizon, sprint (us side)and bell, roger and telus on ca side will be their perfect employer .and since they will have turned their eye to the fly on the corner of the wall instead of doing their job ,i bet they will be rewarded for turning a blind eye on an obviously over charged situation.i said it before .wireless shouldnt cost more then 1 $ a gigabyte.is there a way to prevent this?lol check the cloud dust the american industry put out ,the guru said:i know lets get out the old wap techno nobody will see anything lets put it unlimited and everybody will be happy!yep techno so old everybody had forgotten about it.and if you use smartphone and use 100 gigabyte a month(average user these days ,unless your grand dady or grand momy)your dont get afordable service.and for those user dreaming of augmented reality?
no can do?not because the techno isnt there or ready soon, but becasue only king and his court can afford this at 10 $ a gigabit
well if the ones doing the hacking, keep it up they will get what they don't want, and as you said it plays in to the the politicians hands and you are right in that, and as i said the hackers don't see it that way, tend to think that < as a general rule young people feel like they know more than older people do this is as in atttuide> I can do what ever i like, like man the company/government/school /etc deserves what it gets. And so it goes untill life plants a 2 by 4 between the eyes and they wake up.
DDoS attacks are like putting a hose in someone's window and letting it run. Is it wrong to do? Well obviously. But all it does is leave a mess that can be fixed easily. It's not a real hack, but it's sure as hell is an annoying one.
