    Fuck that, and fuck Steam.

EA's move is a smart one for them, and good for everyone else involved. Steam is trying to become a monopoly, and Origins is one more roadblock towards stopping that.

I'm a fan of steam mainly because i buy my games on specials. It also (usually) cheaper than retail stores where i live for new releases. Yet i think there needs to be more competition in the digital download market. Monopolies are rarely good for consumers.

So while its good to see EA provide an alternate model i hope its by offering a better service rather than just making its titles exclusive to Origin. Instead of stopping TOR from being sold on Steam why not offer a slight discount or exclusive pre-order bonuses. Give the consumer the choice to decide rather than forcing us to use Origin and customers will be satisifed rather than feel cheated.

My only gripe with it is that it sets a precedent for other developers/publishers to start doing the same. My favourite part of steam are the sales ie black friday, christmas etc and i'll be disappointed to see them have less variety. Other than that i couldn't really care where i have to download things from as long as they still max out my connection.

Valve removed Crysis 2 from Steam because EA is offering exclusive game content (DLC) to customers who purchased the game through Origin.

It is against the Steam policies for a company to provide content for their game that is incompatible with the Steam version of it. Which is why Valve removed it.

I think it is a fair policy by Valve, but it should be highlighted that EA did not remove the game, they aren't that stupid.

Now you got EA updating the EA manager but taking away digital games and making them exclusive. I'm all for them doing w/e they want (I won't fuckin use it) to games coming out, but when you list something on a service and take it away that's some bullshit.

I believe that's where the OP is saying it's strong arm tactics. Valve exclusively sold Half life and portal series, but they never listed them elsewhere and then took them away that's where the line is drawn.

For those who have Crysis 2 on steam I'm sure its still there to dl and play but you can no longer purchase it on the steam store. Which is a lost sale for them cause i wont buy it on origin that's for damn sure.

"Crytek has an agreement with another download service" which violates some new rules imposed by Steam, resulting in the "expulsion of Crysis 2 from Steam," according to comments made by EA to Giant Bomb."

    I guess blame steam?

You don't know what Crytek did to violate the terms.

Games are rarely pulled from Steam, but when they are it's for a good reason.

For example, Dawn of Discovery was pulled from steam (no longer puchasable but still playable if already purchased) because Ubisoft, the company in charge distribution of the game in NA, refuses to convert over and release the latest patches of the game which were made by the developer and released for the EU version of the game. To my understanding, this violated Steam's terms, which my best guess is that a developer cannot restrict/neglect to make patches or DLC available to the Steam version of the game.

That could very well be what Crytek did, but with it's new upcoming DLC. They may have refused to make the Crysis 2 DLC available for the Steam version, even though they plan on making it available through other online content providers.

In any case, this is EA we're talking about. I highly doubt they're completely innocent in all of this.

I think you misunderstood that line there, I'm not trying to blame anyone, I couldn't care less about Crytek or Crysis, not my type of game, hardly use steam either, it's really a none issue to me.

This isn't really a matter of picking sides but more like a matter of having to install another program to run the games that I want to play.

Or you can just use both like a normal person. You act like you are choosing two diffrent ways of living your life or something. Its just another program that you never need to use unless your buying the game. You can still add the game to steam if you are socialy disturbed and need people to chat with during your playing.

Steam, SoE Launcher, Origin, soon we all will have plenthora of third party programs installed in our hard discs. All will be constantly running in our background, scanning our computer, checking the legitimacy of our software installations and so on. How can you defend Steam and bitch on the other I wonder? Same crap really.

There are two sides to this debate; from the developer and from the consumer.

EA would like more control over its games while still being able to expand its market and continue to reach its customer base adn expand it. Creating, running and maintaining a system like origins is no small feat so they had to wait for a game with a strong hype and following to launch in order to be able to draw the customer into using it. Will this hurt their sales? Potentially. Steam is a brand name now for online downloads with "lifetime" acessibility and redownloading. it reaches out to millions of users already and not allowing them to use their social online sales center of choice can be risky to alienate some potential customers. So why would EA choose to do this? Having their own system allows them to set their games at their own prices, to monitor usage, to collect personal user information to help them in their own marketing and development strategies. There is nothing inherently wrong with a company selling its own products. We haven't seen this as often for the sheer fact that most developers don't have the necessary library or funds or stability to pull this off. AND cause their bottom line is getting their product out to as many buyers as they can to maximize profits from it in the first 6 months of a games life before the next big title comes out.

How ever you choose to buy or not buy this game and any future EA games is up to you. The success or failure of Origins is up to you. Welcome to the power of the buyer. If Steam has your heart and soul then by all means bycott spending money on EA. It is annoying to need more bloat ware installed on my computer but I think the old girl can handle one more piece of crap. If it becomes an issue then I will uninstall and decline any future purchases from EA.
