SWG died in my eyes the day the NGE was released. Still, it saddens me to see things come to a final end. It's ironic - had they instead focused on what made SWG unique back then rather than try to WoWify it, SWG might very well have been able to coexist with TOR. Well... rest in peace SWG.
I'm a big ol' fluffy carewolf. Be afraid. Be very afraid.
On a side note SOE has said they would be pulling the plug on Vanguard and Pirates of The Burning Sea to consolidate and help alleviate the financial burden that they acquired.
To bad, what will they do now for another MMORPG to put on the station access? Possibly EQ Next can take that spot, we shall see if they try buy another title.
When did they say this, and where is the link so I can read the statement? How do they pull the plug on Pirates, they don't own it? (edit: or develop it)
Now MMORPG.com will have to make two channel for SWG vets; one for pre-NGE and one for Post-NGE. When the game is official gone, some of the post-NGE vets will get an idea of what the pre-NGE vets were going through.
In my opinion, the pre and post NGE games were two different games. Even if I enjoyed the post-NGE, I missed the pre-NGE more.
The NGE contributed to the downfall, however some people enjoyed what was left of the game. But lucas arts, have forced sony to end it before the new game comes out, in order to focus advertising on that, and also the people who played SWG simply because of the Starwars lore, will be forced to play the new game.
It also makes me wonder if they are trying to avoid any negative publicity regarding the new game in comparison to SWG, because it has less features, worse graphics, less areas to explore, etc etc.
All in all, it feels as if lucas arts have said; you cant have this one anymore, you can only have this shiny new one, of course you have to pay for it, and it looks worse, and there will be less social interaction systems in it, so you will probably lose some of your friends.
And also, although the NGE was "dumbed down" it still featured many sandbox elements, and we will be seeing a game which has sandbox elements, being swapped for one the is entirley themepark.
My only hope, in order for something good to come out this "business desicision" is that Sony and lucas arts show some good will and opensource the server code, database, Pre NGE server code, original design documents or maybe Raph can now?
sony could do with grass roots publicity that would offer, but they are pretty short sighted so its very unlikley.
-Flicks through the 2003 collectors edition art book one last time, puts away the pewter zabrak model, thinking of what could have been.
My first mmo... stumbling around Tatooine amazed and completely lost until I got up the courage to actually interact with others... my world was never the same from that moment on. Many, many adventures... Krayt hunting... guild drama... Rancors spawning in the middle of camps... seeing my first in-game lightsaber (nearly wet myself)... and of course all the cantinas. Great times!
Tried NGE for about a month but left for all time.

" It's a kindness. Like a blind old incontinent sheepdog, he's had his day. Take him out to the barn with a double-barreled shot-gun and blow the mother away. And I'm only saying that because I'm so fond of him."
I thought this was an appropriate reference, hope some of you are familar with the origin.
Farewell SWG, we had our good times and bad, I'll never forget you!

Sarcasm FTW dude.
Dude, don't do that! Actually I could care less if either of them closed, it just seemed odd that I hadn't read anything. Sending in my sarcasm meter in for repair as I type.
most of what you say is true except for the fact that pre-cu the sub base was increasing and at it's peak had the record number of subscribers for mmos at the time untill wow. only after cu did it begin the hemorage people.
As bad as the NGE was, it has been confirmed the game was losing 10k subs a month prior to it happening. So while the NGE was an obvious fubar, the preNGE game wasnt doing very well either.
i already replied to this but i forgot to quote it so people would understand what i was talking about.
swg only lost sub at that rate after cu. before cu swg had the record number of subs out of any mmo at the time before wow.
Even though I never played SWG, I respect the historic place it holds as an MMORPG. R.I.P SWG, you will be forever remember nostalgically and for what you once were.
This probably is Sony and Lucas deciding that the game is dead in the water when SWTOR comes out. With the contract expiring next year anyways it would not make sense to renew it. SWTOR claims its first victim. I can see this being the future for a couple of older games unfortunately. Not just because of SWTOR, but also GW2.
Kind of sad to see it go, I have a lot of history in SWG before NGE (yes including becoming FS but I remained TKA/Smuggler/Combat Medic as Jedi didn't appeal to me). However it doesn't really surprise me, though I had thought Vanguard would close its doors first.
Because flying a Minmatar ship is like going down a flight of stairs on an office chair while firing an Uzi.
This is horrible horrible horrible. Should have tried ftp before dumping..One of the few MMOs on the market that had unique features to offer.
I am sure this was a Lucas and Bioware thing. They did not want SWG out there confusing the market and the brand as they launch SWTOR. And there aren't enough remaining fans / players keeping the game alive to in any way cause a stir over that decision. It's that simple.

Maybe, maybe not. I highly doubt SWG ever surpassed EQ. Either way, the point is the game was in decline before the NGE. Sure, it was SOE's fault, but the NGE isnt what sent the game downhill. That was already in progress.
Pre Cu was the best time ever i have had in an mmo to date.I have never seen an update to a game cause so many people to unsub from it like the cu did.The guild i was in on Farstar server went from being very active to a dead guild in a matter of days some of the guys in the guild had like 3 or 4 accounts and all cancelled all of them such a shame. But then when whole posts are removed from the official forums and people got banned from posting on swg just because they did like people points of view on the updates what do you expect.I went back a couple of times but there was never anyone about a shame it did not get to go f2p but then what LA wants LA gets with regards to anything to do with Starwars.
Would the last person out please turn the light off.

CU was the hill, NGE was the cliff.
I will not play a game with a cash shop ever again. A dev job should be to make the game better not make me pay so it sucks less.
More people played AFTER CU, so you "vets" need to just get over yourselves. This game sucked from the beginning, the updates helped but it was never a good game.
Of course EA and LA wouldn't want people to confuse SWTOR with this unfinished pile of garbage.

Funny thing is though before the NGE Sony had a chance to win people back with desired and "wanted" changes. However they chose not to listen to their community. Before the NGE sony could have thrown on a bandage but after the NGE they'd ripped a hole so deep and wide into their player base that people just kept flowing out of that game and into others and a frightening rate. The game went from thriving/declinging to graveyard/dead in almost a month or two. Its sad though, a little more content with the origonal game they'd built and the game could have gone strong for many more years and perhaps would be continuing on along side SWTOR... no though it looks like SWTOR will have to carry the SWMMO banner on its own.

Im not going to pretend we did not have problems with player population before the NGE. The CU was the first hit, I saw 2 of the big guilds on Intrepid fold due to lack of members. I watched as BFG (bestine front gaurd) died, an dthen there was that rebel guild on lok it fell apart as well. I remember this one guy was the best slicer in game, you wanted him slicing your stuff.
I know folks who sold their holocron jedi accounts when the CU hit, I remember some of those going for 800 bucks on ebay. I stuck around until the NGE, in fact I played a few months after the NGE but at that point I had lost all hope that we were ever going back. I remember the lies, of oh we deleted the database, we don't have a backup so forth and so on. However 10 subs a month is a small drop in the bucket compared to about 85% of your player base leaving.
I hate it for the current players, you got to be a dire hard in the wool swg player to have stuck with it this long.

RIP SWG both games.
part of me is glad that its being put to rest but im also sad that my favorite mmorpg will be gone. flurry crashed. so many people on right now.

Sarcasm FTW dude.
Shame to be honest. Currently its the best MMO I've ever played, before and after the NGE.
What a waste...
Get a good dev team on this game and it could still make money.
Its such bull that they released the NGE and then quit onthe game.
Released the NGE, quit on the game,a nd started SW:TOR.
The NGE is SW:TOR now and everyone is just eating up with a spoon.
While the original vision for SWG was burried and now killed.
Goodbye my old freind.

Only Sony can take a brand like Star Wars that is making billions for everyone around the globe for decades and ruin it like this.
No fate but what we make, so make me a ham sandwich please.
