Not saying that the game didn't have it's issues before the NGE, but had SOE worked on fixing those issues instead of redoing the game as they did we may not be seeing this announcement right now. One thing is for sure, because of the road they opted to take, we now know the ultimate course that put the game on.
Thanks to Raph Koster (I know you lurk here sometimes my man) and the original crew and original vision that gave me countless hours of fun and entertainment living in the Star Wars universe. Thanks also to all the people that took advantage of the great system that allowed each of you to create the persona that you've always wanted (especially when those persona's weren't of the "iconic" flavor) and thus enriching my game experience.
This needed to happen. I understand some will disagree, but it will indeed give some closure to those still burning with anger over the NGE and it adds a measurable amount of credibility to those of us (myself included) that, while not violently raging over the NGE, knew it was the wrong way to go.
Lesson: Be yourself and do it well. Don't try to flip midway and become something else.
But SW:TOR is the NGE 2.0.
I don't think the closing of SWG really changes anything. SW:TOR is still a representation of the mindset that killed Star Wars Galaxies.
I wouldn't really disagree with you on it being 2.0, but at least it was made with that in mind from the beginning. I can respect that. I won't play it, of course. I also hope that if it does not do very well that Bioware/LA don't attempt to try to incorporate sandbox elements into it thinking they can capture some of us old SWG players that left with the NGE. As much as it sucked for me I wouldn't want those who like what TOR is to go through the same disappointment I did. Even if the vast majority of those players don't give a rats butt about me and the game change I got with SWG.
As I said above, I've thought this needed to happen for a long time. At least now those who preferred pre-NGE might begin to feel less slapped in the face because of the game being still up and running and SOE for the most part not admitting that they made the wrong move.
This proves it in my eye. There are more than few other MMOs out there that began before SWG and are still running. If they had indeed made the right move and had all the subscribers they would lead you to believe the NGE brought about they would more than likely extend the contract. Both SOE and LA like to make money.
"Many nights, my friend... Many nights I've put a blade to your throat while you were sleeping. Glad I never killed you, Steve. You're alright..."

Not really. The NGE was made with the idea that the mythical playerbase wanted clicky, psuedo FPS combat and didn't want to have to read or anything. TOR will have combat that is similar to WOW (which is what the CU combat was meant to be like), and will have a heavy focus on the story, to the extent that you will need to pay attention to what the quest givers are saying and respond to them.
The NGE was for folks with ADHD, tor seems to be aimed at folks who like WoW and play BioWare games.
Great now all the SWG fanbois will flood the TOR site demanding that TOR be more like SWG.
On a serious note, SWG was doomed long before the CU or NGE. It was a crappy, buggy, horrid game that instead of making you luke skywalker or Han Solo you became Uncle Owen.
As bad as the NGE was, it has been confirmed the game was losing 10k subs a month prior to it happening. So while the NGE was an obvious fubar, the preNGE game wasnt doing very well either.
I think a lot of the pre NGE crowd seems to forget this. Granted SOE went about doing changes the wrong way, but I can not blame them for trying something.
They had a game with one of the biggest IPs around. An IP that could bring in millions but yet it had stalled out at around 250-300k I believe. And like Grand_Nagus pointed out they were losing 10k subs a month. Having the biggest IP around and losing subscribers at that rate meant that there was something wrong. And I am sure that it was unacceptable to Lucas Arts also.
As evidenced by World of Warcraft's numbers there were plenty of new mmorpg players that could have been brought in. WoW did it and they did it with an IP that was not nearly as well known as Star Wars. So pre NGE was not the be all end all that some people made it out to be.
Like I said SOE went about it the wrong way and hopefully it was lesson learned. But something needed to change because SWG was dying anyways.

SWG was really a mess when it came out, people were complaing about being killed by Butter flies , the lag was constant (still is) and lets face it SWG was a glorified chat room. I believe sony tried to fix it but it was so messed up it was beyond repair and they made it even worse as if that was even possible. I agree withSnaylor47 the game was not Star wars it was cmon down and lets chat in the game world that looks like star wars but is impossible to play
well I loved this game from the start even with the bugs LOL warping lol "air chairs" even to this day I miss the old game before NGE !
To all the people that say "vets get over it "! Does it not show what the game meant to us that years after we are still talking about it and miss it?
Am not going to say that I am sad that this game is going to me and many more it died with the NGE and to all the people that play it now and tell VETS to get over it now you know how we felt after the NGE and am sorry you lost your game now

You missed it because It was a nice place to chat amist a world that looked like star wars but had no space ships for the longest time and played nothing like people who love star wars wanted it to be like. Old star wars or pre cu if you will was great if you did not like combat, loved to chat in a star wars setting, enjoyed c rafting immensly, loved to lag and did not care anything about star wars lore
SWG died in my eyes the day the NGE was released. Still, it saddens me to see things come to a final end. It's ironic - had they instead focused on what made SWG unique back then rather than try to WoWify it, SWG might very well have been able to coexist with TOR. Well... rest in peace SWG.

Have you ever looked at the sub numbers of western mmos and that most be lucky if they have >200k subs for that long time SWG had?
This whole "this ip is worth some million subs" is bullshit bcs there is no ip not even "Lord of the Rings" bcs all these ips have never made a cult following first like Blizzard did with their games making themself a name, big fame and a playerbase that was already in the millions - without this WoW is unthinkable and would not have happened!
So if there is any thing we can learn about WoW then it is you have first to build up a foundation, a huge playerpool, the cult following and and to introduce the ip first in single and multiplayergames and keep it alive with patches and activate the community - then you have a potential millionseller!
Btw the subs werent bad, they did release patches that did not fix the bugs and had a major mmo release and still were only loosing so few subs - this makes me wonder and thinking the end is coming - truly they had to do some thing! (sarcasm)
+++++++++++
RIP SWG, you did not live up your potential but opposite to most other mmos you tried and i respect that very much! I hope that SOE shows some real love now and let you go as the Diva you were!

LOTRO was worth a million subs too. It how ever I think failed at two things, one its PvP is absolute Sh!t, why Turbine didn't add and evil factoin is beyond me (Dont give that lore crap when you can heal via musical intrament.), and two it didn't come out as the movies were it waited a few years after the LOTR hype was long gone.
I'm Sad. I'm Mad. I'm Distraught. And..ultimately, I'm helpless and am unable to do anything about this. I am one person out of hundreds of thousands...perhaps millions, who have played this game and love it and have dealt with the deaf ears of SOE.
I recently resubscribed to SWG because of the crafting. This was just before Sony and SOE were brought down because of the hacking. I didn't even know that was going on - I just decided that I wanted to craft, be an industrialist, and SWG is the only game (well, possible exception being EVE - but EVE is just brutal) that has crafting cred. It's sad that no new MMO, or old MMO for that matter, developed something that was so amazing - SOE did something right! Anyway, I was in the process of doing fun stuff crafting wise then bam, 4 days later after I resubscribe, the hack (which actually happened apparently days/weeks before I resubscribed!) brought down the servers. Then...it was wait...wait...wait for SOE to say something about the game. Anything. SOE did not communicate with their player base regularly. It was distressing. Again, SOE did not (does not) listen nor respond.
And now, after managing to get all of my characters off Bloodfin and onto Chilastra, with the hopes of hooking up with my old guildmates...only to find out that half of them were too slow and unable to move to Chilastra which was closed to the Free Character Transfer Service as Chilastra, along with Europe-Farstar, were full. So that's three 'full' servers now on SWG, the other being Starsider.
So, I have a town on Chilastra. I was in the process of bringing the Kue Corporation back online, to be a titan of industry on Chliastra. and now...now I no longer have the urge to try. Where can I go for crafting now? SWG was my only hope. Now, I have to deal with the politics, backstabbing, heart-stopping fear of EVE while trying to acquire goods and move them from null sec space to high sec with 3 wardecs and demands by corporation management and alliance leadership....EVE, it's fun, but it's brutal. No Star Wars Galaxies to save me...
I will never buy another Sony product again. All the joy and wonder that filled me with the Star Wars IP - Lucas Arts has managed to chip away and destroy. I hope one day my fall to the Dark Side is halted...perhaps even redemption will be possible and i will one day again reach for the Light. But not today.
I will miss you, Star Wars Galaxies. May the Valar guide and protect you and bring you peace.
Holy hell, the size of some of your guys rose tinted glasses are amazing.
Seriously if the game itself was 1/4 as good as half of you are making it out to be SOE would never have needed to implament the CU let alone the NGE.
Wow, just wow.
They didn't "need" to.....they chose to.
The original game could have been fixed, polished, had content added and become something great. Instead, they not only wasted time and money re-designing the game TWICE, but TWICE shat on their customer base.
Ever have something that you worked for months to achieve taken away over night?? How would your loyalty be to that company be after that??? What if they did that to you more than once, would you continue to subscribe??

Played wow for over 5 years , maybe 10-20 epic moments ...
The 1st 2 years of SWG i could spend all day telling you stories, and making you laugh your ass off at the stuff we pulled!!!
Its a sad moment but they can never take away the good times us vets had prior to CU....
TOR might do well but if i had to choose Opening TOR or SWG it would be no contest....
