And how successful are they? most of these small company MMOS either shut down or struggle for existence. Better ideas does not always make for a better MMO.
Most companies were small companies with good ideas at one time. The companies shut down due to other fatal flaws. Ask anyone about certain aspects of VGSOH and they will say the ideas are great but the game is complete shit because of the lack of dev support. Or look at old Blizzard who took something that people already did and made it better with some good ideas and succeeded in both MMO's and RTS. Its not hard for these large cap companies to make good ideas, they just dont want to.
The good ideas which worked. Recently a lot of companies have tried different ideas but it didn't work out. End of the day it is business and when you are investing 80 to 100 million in projects, can't blame the companies to stick to ideas which work.
Now when small companies of today will come up with ideas which work i am sure you and i won't need to argue about it and their MMOS would be a sure hit.

Sorry, so SWTOR will have random PERSONAL NPC's standing in a personal hub taking material from you in exchange for armor. Totally different.
Nope again wrong. I suggest you do some research or atleast wait for a trial/demo because i have no idea where you are geting your info from.
Alright, since most people assume this game is another wow clone with the same boring gameplay and same boring linear quest grind, lets talk about the new and unique things it brings. Aka talk me/others into calling it something other than a wow-wannabe.
Only Unique feature I know of, is the class based voiced over "storylines" Anyone wanna add to this?
Will there be mass pvp with land control? preferable with the best gear being from pve raids (none of this pvp gear shit like wow has). I hope their is because if not thats just total fail when you have 2 factions that been at war for centuries. Is there much char customization in terms of skills? or will everyone of the same class pretty much be a carbon copy?
Past the years when I've heard people complaining about mmorpgs there's always the top complaint: Boring (quest) grind. Or boring wow grind. Major issues being wall of text npc's giving rat ear collection quests over and over again, against boring auto-attack enemies.
Changing those two things is major. At least the story part should be okay with Bioware, VO's and all. Also they've been saying the enemies wont be just one-at-a-time-autoattack enemies. That should be the backbone. I dont know how unique people find space ship player housing or riding your speeder bike etc, yes I'm talking about a sci-fi setting since there is NONE up to date mmorpg sci-fi setting (please dont mention EVE it does not cut, it's just a space flyer with non-character gameplay). I know there's alot more than that to the game, things that I dont know or just mentioning the huge game world with tons of planets but these threads are kinda pointless untill we've tried the game and can really tell how it feels like.
I know it's easy to bash new (mmorpg) games when the haters always like to use the card "what new does it bring" and nothing qualifies what the game brings, especially before the launch when you dont even know how it's going to be. I also understand it in a way because most of the released mmorpgs ARE boring crap, but I dont feel it's fair towards a major game company like Bioware against these never-heard-before-studios pouring out B-grades. Or I could just say that when a new modern warfare is released it brings absolutely nothing new to the fps genre but sells millions and is called awesome? Why is that? Is it just good quality or what? In tor I see a lot of new things, or old things that works different way, or old things that I dont want to see changed/broken just to be different.
Oh and there's also the fact that you cant call it a wow clone since wow did not invent anything by itself, it simply had a known and rich/potential game world to kickstart it The stupid term came only because the game got so popular. Play RPGs or mmoRPGs from 97-03 and you see all the wow features are already there including in Kotor and other Bioware's titles.
Now can we have a dozen more of these threads please, every day untill the game launches.
What I like about MMO's is that openness and the ability to team up with a large number of people. What I dislike about MMO's is that they're nothing like the single player RPG's, MMO's are static and lack any kind of story driven importance, too often the quests are so generic and uninteresting that I find I grow bored of MMO's quickly unless they have good PVP since the PVE isn't interesting enough.
I've always wished an MMO to have the great qualities of a singleplayer RPG, a good story, interesting questing and this is what I really like about SWTOR. At last an MMO which will be story driven, questing will feel meaningful.
Cover system, 100% Voice over content, Crew skill based Crafting, companion characters that actually react to your dialogue choices. Multi player dialogue system, Social rewards system, rail shooter mini game, pre launch guild mandates actually transfered into game, Moral compass measurement (Light and dark side) impacting gameplay mechanics, outdoor instances with seamless transistion to and from the open world, ability to partake in party to npc dialogue without being physically present, unique content per class making up a sizeable portion of the game, there is probably more but basically a lot of new things just not world altering things.
Cover system yeah that is kinda new for a mmo, but fairly useless if your not a class thay shoots, Crew based crafting is just having npc's do it for you, seen that many times, Companions are just glorifed pets, Multi Player dialog system is going to be more of a curse/annoyence than anything.
Most of the stuff there is nothing new, other than the cover system, and the 100% voice over. Care to try again? XD
I am not asking for a 100% innovative mmo, I just want one that feels like a diffrent experence, not one that feels like god knows how many other mmo's, we honestly do not need anymore mmo's that play like world of warcraft, but that seems to be all that is being released, and rarely if ever do they try to incorporate anything new into their games.
I mean you can have generic mmo combat like WoW, but you can do something to spice it up, kinda like what guildwars is doing with their cross class combo's, sure at the core its the same thing but at least they trying to do soemthing diffrent. I also didn't like the SW: Kotor games because I thought the combat was stupid as hell, Never seen people with such bad aim with a gun, I know its a game but still when they shoot at u and somehow totally miss you its just not believable. Then again I might go to my local torrent site and dl the 2 kotor games just to play thru something I haven't yet.
Why would anyone waste their time trying to convince a sandbox gamer that a themepark game is a sandbox?
Edit after you added to your post:
This is a Thempark game based on the KOTOR time (300 years later). It will have the same dialogue type questing as in ME. That makes the questing vastly better IMO.
Classes will have many more options than other MMOs. There will be 16 advanced classes based on 8 base classes. Out of the base classes, 6 can be Tanks and 6 can be Healers and all can be DPS. As well as a mix and match of DPS/Tank or Stealth/Healer or Stealth/Tank. And each class story is completely unique with no overlap. As well as each faction is completely unique with no overlap in content. That is in classs and open world questing. Not Operations (Raids) or some Flashpoints (dungeons) and Warzones (BGs).
Combat gets rid of auto-attack, but adds multiple attacks with a skill. As well as reactive combat for PvE. PvP has some new features as in Tanks using taunt type skills to decrease the damage by 50% on all but themselves. Many of the demo players say the combat feels right. But it will not be more FPS with active dodge like GW2.
There will be an entire planet for just PvP at end game and something like WARs PvP lakes(not confirmed). As well as an entire single player planet (you can still group, but it is desigend with SPG in mind) for end game. Crafting will allow for 1 or 2 crafters per faction to be able to make gear at least equal to raid gear. Plus something they talked about today that will decrease the need for the gear chase for everyone. But it will not be anounced until it is working in game.
Companions are more than pets. The have their own story arcs and dialogue based on the choices you make in your class story. The can be love interests if you want. They can be sent on missions for you. And we learned that they should have something like DA:O for activly changing their AI. And can be customized in every way but sex and build changes.
But you are correct. This will not be a sandbox or a FPS type combat game. It is adding in an actual BW SPG RPG level questing system as in ME for a MMO. Other than that, it is just a refinment and adapatation to the Themepark MMO features we know. But it won't be limited IMO as other games that have tryed and failed as in WAR, AOC and LOTRO.
Others can add a lot more than me. But some people will not take the info and believe it. It will always be a WoW clone to some. Nothing we can do to change that. You either believe what is said or you don't. Simple as that.
Hmm now this has me intersted, I'll have to check it out. Bu thow can their be no overlap on the class story quests, since there are 8 base classes, I assume the story is going to be the same for each class till you branch off. Which from what I see goes 1 of 2 ways, since there are 16 adv classes and 8 base. But still, this can be nice. I'll have to look more into it.
Last decent Sci-fi mmo I played was anarchy online, I did not care for swg in any form, found the combat kinda lame in old SWG and it just got worse when they tried to wowify it. Eve and perpetuum i'd not consider much of a game since your mostly accessing spreadsheets to do everything, though Perpetuum wasn't as bad as Eve was in this regard.
Being a pessimist is a win-win pattern of thinking. If you're a pessimist (I'll admit that I am!) you're either:
A. Proven right (if something bad happens)
or
B. Pleasantly surprised (if something good happens)
I am not going to go into great detail as there is far too much to seriously list what BW has innovated into MMO's with this up and coming title. Big one is companions programable AI (al a Mass effect 2) They will not just be a passive or agressive pet, you will have so much customization just with them.
The crafting system is also very unique....
"The King and the Pawn return to the same box at the end of the game"
What makes this game "unique" is the amount of story this IP has to bring with it. Already books have been published with stories about people, places, and things you have and will see. I played WoW a very long time and I enjoyed having story to build a relationship of where I was in the game. I am playing RIFT right now and with no point of reference or history, it feels a little empty and I don't really care about the characters or places, just going through the motions.
As for the weather debate, how long did Blizzard wait to release weather for WoW? 18 months? Oh Wow, it's raining in Stranglethorn. No buffing or debuffing, just graphics. Morrowind has/had better weather....
Why would anyone waste their time trying to convince a sandbox gamer that a themepark game is a sandbox?

I'm not quite sure what you're asking here. The advanced class has nothing to do with the story, the story is written with the base class in mind. So basically there are 8 different stories, 1 for each base class. There is no branching off of any sort, each class will have thier own story from beginning until level cap or beyond (It's unclear to me if the class story will end before or after reaching level cap).
There is an average of 200 hours of storyline/questing per base class. This does not include world quests, group quests, or flashpoints all of which make up the majority of gameplay time. Also if I understand correctly each class story has 3 chapters.
I'll just say everything SWG was supposed to do and failed miserably at.
well, SW;TOR isnt trying to be SWG so it doesnt matter that it fails at it.. the focus is on storyline etc, its a themepark after all, SWG was a sandbox.. so of course SW;TOR is going to fail at that.. though you could say.. it was in trying to turn SWG into a themepark that caused that to fail.. doesnt mean SW;TOR will though.. SW;TOR might lack a great many things that SWG had, but just because SW;TOR lacks SWG's flexibility isnt necessarily a bad thing, and its quite possible that the storylines in SW;TOR will make up for lack of a space simulator etc, that SWG had, and the complex crafting etc.. just because SW;TOR fails at being the next SWG... isnt necessarily a bad thing.. just .. a bit disappointing for those who were hoping for something progressive

There is nothing new or unique to SW:ToR , but thats just me , for the years ive been following sw:tor , thats what i can conclude, wouldn't exactly say voiced over storylines is considered new or unique.
Oh there is the cover system which is quite new .. though it's really hard to see that playing out for me at this point. I can see that one thing making or breaking pvp.
Not sure if you can say the cover system is new at this point as the Original Stargate gate was to have it and demo'd it in one of their mini-films.
Deep story unlike any other MMO. Voice overs unlike ever done before in MMOs. A companion system with more depth than the usual 'pet'. A cover system I haven't seen in mmos before (correct me if it has been done before). A different crafting system (Though I'm unsure whether it's deeper than the usual MMO crafting).
IMO the game seems to bring a whole new level of immersion unlike anything other MMO's have achieved. That alone is a plus in my book. The ability to shape your story to such a level as normal BIoware games is new and amazing thing which has been missing from MMOs

If you havent tried wurm online or the original SWG , then you truely dont know what immensive crafting system is, its nothing new or unique what SW:ToR has in place, the companion / pet system, well the old beastmaster from SWG pre cu also precedes whatever SW:ToR has in place, the game brings nothing new or unique, not even the voice over.

Do i have to name a certain amount or just one, does it have to be of certain importance or big enough change? cause if it's just naming one thing it does new thats easy if i just have to name one thing
Morphing system based on allignement
There i'm done. I can go on though if you want.
Seemless zoning in and out of instances
Choreographed combat.
Multiplayer dialog
Being able to change another persons quest even if it's not your own
I'm sure i can find more but i think thats bringing enough to fullfill the nothing new or unique claim.
One has to be really careful when using the words nothing new or unique because that can easily be discredited if one has the resources and evidence to prove it. Now i'm sure people will just shrug these off as fluff but even at that. It's new and unique so it still refutes that claim.
Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.
Is ToR going to be good? Dude it's Bioware making a freaking star wars game, all signs point to awesome. -G4tv MMo report.
BioWare's story telling in both content and presentation is already unique, it is their innovation in video gaming that they are bringing to the MMO space.
Take a game like Mass Effect and replace the BioWare storytelling with a WoW-like storytelling and see how many people would play it.
Pretty Obvious difference there.
Other than that, all people that say "the crafting is like WoW only the companions do it" are wrong. You have to level up your crafting, and that can only be done over time, since there is a predetermined, set amount of time it takes to level up the crafting, it is more like EvE's crafting thatn it is like WoW's. You can't get to 50 in TOR, go buy all the mats you need and get your crafting to max lvl, if you get to 50 and try to lvl crafting in TOR, it will take just as long for you to lvl it up as it will for a lvl 1 guy that started crafting the same day.
Starships. Say what you want, they are unique. They are very similar to the starships in KotOR and Mass Effect and are a hallmark of BioWare games. They aren't a rip-off of some other mechanic somewhere else, purely a BioWare thing.
It is so hilarious to me how many people complain about lack of day / night cycle.. If that really is your deciding factor to play or not to play a game, thats just sad. I personally could care less about day / night cycle, because I am a gamer and I know for a fact that after at most 3 months, I wont be caring at ALL about the graphics and will be grinding/raiding for the best of best gear and what not.. If you are sitting there admiring the sunset and snow flurries in a game after a few months, you probably suck and are a perma-noob lol
Im going to play the hell outta some Star wars, and if it sucks Ill uninstall it after a few days / weeks (just like I did RIFT), but Im betting on it being great, and since I absolutely will not be playing GW2 Ill have plenty of time to make a decision to play SW long term or not.
P.S. Why do people think that because THEY have some idealistic view of what the "perfect" mmo is, can I not enjoy a story driven linear theme park mmo? Is it impossible to imagine that some people MIGHT just like that sort of thing? SOME people are so pathically simple and single minded. I LOVE sandbox mmos and I LOVE action Mmos and I LOVE themepark linear mmos.. I guess that means I LOVE mmo style gameplay? You are seriously loosing out on alot of fun if you limit yourself to 1 single genre of a genre of a genre..
But then again, I dont go to forums about someones game they are looking forward to and try to talk it down and convince them that a certain game sucks and why..
Im too busy playing / conversating with positive individuals to have time to troll, if I had that much time to waste posting about something I will not play, You would see me in the Gw2 forums, probably in a heated debate about how hype and doctored screenshots do not equal some earth shattering world changing game lol

ill be honest i haven't read through the whole thread so sorry if this has been mentioned already.
there will be pvp gear. they have said it will at most give a 10% advantage in pvp over equal pve gear. they don't want gear to be the over riding factor but want pvper's to be rewarded for their hard work. as for mass pvp with land control, its unknown. we have heard of pvp areas with objectives but thats about all we have heard. at comic con they said we will hear more about pvp within the next month. my guess is it will be talked about at either gamescom or pax.
not sure what kind of customization you want in terms of skills. once you choose your adavanced class, 3 skill trees are opened up to you(2 unique trees to the AC and 1 shared between them) that you distribute points into. i'm guessing this isn't what you are looking for but this is what we have. as for gear customization, no real appearance customization for gear outside of the color matching system that matches the color of all your gear to your chest piece. this can be deactivated if you don't want it. in terms of stats, all gear has slots for upgrades. in some cases these upgrades can be a huge impact since they said at comic con that if you wanted, you could hold on to your first lightsaber through the whole game and just keep upgrading it. also not just lightsabers can have their color's changed, blasters bolt colors can be altered as well.

Then you're blind. I've tried both and yes they are amazing. However, if you reread my post I only mentioned a different crafting system, NOT an immensive crafting system like SWG's. The level of connection you have as a player with your companion is unlike others in MMOs. Now, please mention a game with same amount of Voiceovers and cutscenes. Escpecially with the same importance as in SW:TOR. Choices that shapes your character - that's immersion. The game is unique, but not next gen. No one claims it to be so.. But you cannot deny that SW:TOR isn't a game with a unique set of ideas and new changes to the old system.
Since when did they say there wouldn't be any space content? From what I have read in the past, it is something they plan on but not going to be in for release? Did Bioware come out and say they weren't going to do it at all now or something?? As for pvp, they have stated, just recently from what I have read, that there are going to be pvp servers so on those servers there will be world pvp(not sure where I read it at, I have been all over the place reading and listening to interviews lately, but I do know one of the devs talked about having this in place).

Ah....no. Initially they never intended to have space combat at release. But of course people complained about that so they added space combat as a mini-game tube shooter, which looks pretty fun to me if you simply look at it for what it is and not what everybody hoped space combat would be. Personally I never expected space combat at all. You have to keep in mind that this game is based on the Kotor series which also only had space combat as something of a mini-game.
Yes there will be pvp servers and yes you have every reason to expect to be ganked on any world that both the Republic and the Empire will be playing on. The starter worlds and the capitol planets are still safe zones tho.

as of comic-con things like pvp space battles are still on the wall of crazy(wall of crazy are all things they would like to get in post launch) so no they haven't said it won't happen but they aren't promising that it will either. and yes there will be pvp servers with open world pvp and open world pvp areas on pve servers where the only reason to go there is for pvp. you can also flag your self for pvp on pve servers but the areas i mentioned flag you automatically for pvp.
4:28p: Question: Will there be space pvp? JO: Not for launch, It's on the big wall of crazy. SR: You get to do PVP combat on a space ship, does that count? Audience: It's a start.

I've always wished an MMO to have the great qualities of a singleplayer RPG, a good story, interesting questing and this is what I really like about SWTOR. At last an MMO which will be story driven, questing will feel meaningful.
Either way, you can't lose! Try it out sometime!
If you're really interested in info about the game this thread has everything we know so far about swtor.
http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=300223
List of SOE lies
It's funny because WoW didn't do anything new or innovative either but look how successful it was.
Not sure if you can say the cover system is new at this point as the Original Stargate gate was to have it and demo'd it in one of their mini-films.
SWG (pre-cu) - AoC (pre-f2p) - PotBS (pre-boarder) - DDO - LotRO (pre-f2p) - STO (pre-f2p) - GnH (beta tester) - SWTOR - Neverwinter
List of SOE lies

How would space PvP work, anyway? I thought the ships were stuck in a funnel of sorts like Star Fox?
