Efforts to kill piracy that potentionaly screw legal customers ( and requiremetn being online screws them if their internet goes down) are bad efforts.
I guess every online game screws its customers then everytime the internet goes down.
So much anti-corporate angst from narrow minded internet heroes.
It's hillarious.
You are either "sucking the corporate teet" or "one of the enlightened few (lol)" that realizes the man is out to get us and steal all of our monies and etc. etc.
It's no wonder American/Western politics are so completely polarized - "business as usual" and "my way or the highway" are the norm in Western societies.
You're either with me or my enemy. Black or white.
Unfortunately, you can't make someone see reason when they are so completely entrenched in their pre-determined ideologues.
You do understand that Diablo 3 is a single-player game with co-op capability, right? Why would anyone NEED / WANT to be online? If it's to buy items to progress through a single-player campaign, they're morons to begin with. That's like purchasing different guns for use in Call of Duty's story mode. Entirely pointless.
I have never really played D2 a lot, but I have been told that there was a HUGE market for D2 related stuff. Blizzard is just getting some of that money now and I am OK with that. It's going to happen so why not make it more secure to do it and have Blizzard make some money out of it.
I would hardly call it more secure, as Blizzard has yet to answer how they'll handle hacked accounts now that real-world currency is involved. If anything, I foresee them 'comping' you with Blizzard bucks.
As for the whole "it'll always happen, at least they'll make money off it now" argument, I look at it like I would local police accepting that there is a Black Market, and taking it over so that "Hey, at least now the 5-0 makes coin off of it now".
Doesn't make it any more right or legitimate.
The excuse that the RMT AH is a ward for farmers is Blizzard essentially throwing in the towel and getting in on the racket. I find it rather disgusting from an ethical standpoint, but they're surely laughing it up from a business one.

SC2, originally, did not have LAN or availablility without logging in to Real ID. Guess what? Pirates fixed both of those.
They'll do the same for Diablo 3.
So, no, there is no significant blow to piriting by limiting the game to ONLINE only.
So according to you every company should just throw hands in air and say 'f*** it'? sorry but that attitude makes no sense. only because we can't kill piracy completely lets stop making any efforts at all.
Playing on LAN is not same as playing online. Two different things. Moreover, by keeping online only they eliminated the offline single player mode so how can hackers create something which does not exist? it is not like Ubisoft's Settlers 7 which had option for single player mode but all you needed was to connect to internet. Don't confuse D3 with some DRM check.
I never said that they should give up, but they only hinder their rake-in of cash by subjecting legitimate buyers to checks.

Get over it, the few MINORITY that would play this game without internet dont come close to equaling the sheer amount of hackers/cheaters/exploiters/super villians that also would. D2 was a joke in battle.net due to this fact, there was no such thing as a legitimate character, as everyone would create an offline character, exploit the hell out of him, then bring him into battle.net.

And yet we don't know for 100% that there will be a lAN option. As far as we know and my guess is that D3 will work like a MMO. You buy game and connect to the official server and the only work around is to play on some private servers.
All in all a good move, even if it just puts a dent in piracy i am all for it.
Efforts to kill piracy that potentionaly screw legal customers ( and requiremetn being online screws them if their internet goes down) are bad efforts.
I guess every online game screws its customers then everytime the internet goes down.
The difference is that when i buy multiplayer online game , its pretty obvious internet is requirement and its natural.
If i buy single player game, forced internet connection is unnecessary restriction to user. And it has been show again and again that as anti-piracy protection it sucks anyway.
If you want see difference you see it, if you dont you stay blind and deaf. You dont mind limitations and new 'features' of Diablo 3, fine it's you. I do mind and i will not be buying it due them. I could live with being forced to be online, becouse i have good and stable internet connection, for me the biggest issue is real money AH.

And Blizzard has made it quite clear for you and thus made your decision easier by saying 'D3 will be online only'. That makes D3 a multiplayer game from now on. So i have no idea why are you judging this whole thing on basis of offlien single player game when that option has been taken out now.
Once again you are confusing D3 with some DRM check because it is not. D3 will work like a multiplayer game or like a MMO.
mods are for ppl who cant play the real game...and buying and selling items for RL money is a intresting perk wich i will be looking forward to...and no offlfline play? well i dont c a problem with that since everyone has the net now a days...only hics n red necks dont
I am looking forward to D3 and how they are going to twist the story line....just hope it isnt a EPIC fail like World of Warcraft....
I will turn it around.
Buying and selling stuff for real $ is sign of nerdiness and retardness while playing with different community made mods is making the game more interesting for those who already grew a little bored with unmodded game.
Stop being ignorant about Internet. Do some reasearch before making claims out of the dark hole. You will know that in a lot of places it is still sometimes troublesome to get internet - and im not talking about 3rd world countries.
The real truth is that no matter what Blizzard does to combat piracy and to combat cheating/hacking, they will still exist in large enough quantity that anyone who wants to MOD their game experience will be able to do so.
So ya'll are really crying over nothing, nothing at all.
But as a business, Blizzard HAS to take the hardline stance against piracy/hacking/cheating and even if these measures only stop 50%, where as more traditional security (offline keys/registration etc.) were to only stop 30% of piracy, they as a company must and need to go with the more secure option.
It's like people downloading infected 3rd party mods for a game, getting their account/computer hacked, and then blaming it on the company that made the game.
"Why didn't you do more to protect us from ourselves?"

P.S. In regards to heerobya, I agree that they're required to take a firm stance against piracy. This, along with other recently announced changes, however seems to suggest that they're a tad hypocritical and simply seeking to settle while making a buck or two. Which, from a business standpoint, is not a bad idea.
This is where the conflict stems.
Diablo 3 is not an MMO. It's a story-mode game with 4 simultaneously players maximum.
There is nothing massive about the game, other than when you are logged in that you have to ability to purchase from the AH and talk with friends from Real ID. There are your perks! You can buy stuff you don't need, and talk with people who you're probably already playing with.
If they were to treat it like anything, it would most likely be like a console multiplayer game with lobbies and sessions. That would make sense for requiring a connection.
The ONLINE only mode is there solely to thwart pirates. It's a model proven to be ineffective.
P.S. In regards to heerobya's post: I agree that they are required to take a firm stance against piracy. Though this, along with some other recently announced features, make them seem more interested in getting a cut of the deal rather than handling the issue. Very savvy from a business standpoint, that I will not deny.
diablo isn't a single player game. just because you can complete it alone, doesn't make it so. every single diablo was given the ability to be played online because playing with other people is far more enjoyable than playing on your own.
and given the fact that diablo 3 will be online only, doesn't mean that you can't play the game alone. it just means you have to be connected to their servers to play it.
and i for one, would hate to play diablo alone. the replay factor goes down the drain. there's no perks to getting to the end of the game, there's no reason to sit around and farm items. you beat the game, now you have nothing to do. you just wasted $60 on a game that is only playable once.
whereas in the ONLINE universe, you can play with your friends. you can participate in auction house trading. playing with other people brings an interesting dynamic to the game. difficulty scales, making it more challenging.
and the new arena system which gave a whole new reason to farm items/trade for items. this will bring in a whole new playerbase to fill the pin-prick the single player blizz-boycotting haterbase has made to their profits.
blizzard's decision to legalize item trading is justified, and i'm sure they will make regulations to kiss farmers goodbye.
blizzard's decision to also make this game online-only is justified, piracy will be deterred entirely, just like with any online-only game.
blizzard is embracing the fact that the vast majority of the worlds population has access to the internet on a regular basis. there's no reason to knock them for doing so.

Blizzard is seen as a prognosticator of the future. If they are putting player to player real money transactions in one of their flagship games, it could have a far reaching impact on the entire mmorpg genre.
I got one of those broken hilts in WoW, which I sold on the Auction House for something like 15,000 gold. If I could have sold it for $500, I would have. I don't think I could have though...I probably could have gotten something like $50 for it. But what about some purples that I'll probably never wear? Would I sell them for enough to pay for my subscription? You bet!
But all this depends on the real money auction house being successful.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

You do understand that PVP is a moot point in D3, huh? The devs themselves said they had absolutely NO intention of balancing PVP. At all.
I say only that much because trying to convince you of the rest when you're already so predetermined isn't worth the effort.
And please, I'm not a Blizzard Hater. I actively play World of Warcraft to this day, but that doesn't mean I'm inclined to be in favor of every decision they make.

This realy made my day. In D3 we will have :
a) PvP arenas
b) real money AH
I gues this is realy dream for all true PvPers . Now you can spend all your easy/hard earned cash to crush some n00b in arena to prove your skillz . Simply briliant move by Blizzard .

i can almost guarantee you it wont be a moot point for long at all.
blizzard will see everyone hitting level cap, grinding/buying/trading the hell out of the best items in game and making arena EXTREMELY competitive.
blizzard will have no choice but to create some sort of pvp balance, if that will even be necessary at all in the first place.
a game with so few classes/no healers/so few availible skills will have significantly less balancing issues when it comes to pvp.
You've been almost guaranteeing me for the past hour.
Not that I believe the Devs aren't past going back on their word.
For the time being, given the literal statements of Baishok on their own website and in interviews, they have absolutly no intention of balancing the arena or making a ranking / ladder system.
If you joined Diablo 3 for competitive PVP, you picked the wrong game.
Diablo isn't a PVP game anyway, never was. I highly doubt they'll put much effort, if any, into the PVP.
Edit: That said, Blizzard still can't even balance WoW and it's been over six years. They're not going to do any better with Diablo.

i dont think blizzard will pass up the opportunity to rake in a new playerbase/more cash simply because they said they don't want to.
and i didn't join the diablo universe for competitive pvp, i joined it because i played the last two with my friends and it was the most enjoyable experience i've ever had in a game. once the arenas become competitive will just be icing on the cake for me.
wow was never supposed to put so much focus into pvp, but they saw its potential and created one of the most fun/competitive pvp experiences online. also one of the most frustrating.
and wow is inherently harder to balance simply because there are far more usable skills, more classes, and healing classes. this by design creates a hell nearly impossible to balance.

Judging by Starcraft, I honestly doubt they would give Diablo 3 LAN capability.
That said, I foresee the connection becoming available regardless of whether or not Blizzard gives us the option.
Modern responsibility 101.
4 players is far from being a massive multiplayer game, so why is this game gettin so much hype on this site. f blizzard
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
honestly, the only way I found diablo 1 & 2 fun was online play.
LOL if you realy dont work for PR department Activision/Blizzard, you should send apply
Agreed, lol.
i dont think blizzard will pass up the opportunity to rake in a new playerbase/more cash simply because they said they don't want to.
and i didn't join the diablo universe for competitive pvp, i joined it because i played the last two with my friends and it was the most enjoyable experience i've ever had in a game. once the arenas become competitive will just be icing on the cake for me.
wow was never supposed to put so much focus into pvp, but they saw its potential and created one of the most fun/competitive pvp experiences online. also one of the most frustrating.
and wow is inherently harder to balance simply because there are far more usable skills, more classes, and healing classes. this by design creates a hell nearly impossible to balance.
