I think we can compare the fans of TOR and GW2 easily, they are both like playdough, one may be red, the oither may be blue but they both taste like poseidon's salty butthole
So when fans say that GW2 is doing away with the holy trinity so that people aren't forced to be tank/heal/dps it really means its done with a wink and a nod when you read into the actual game info. Every fight is going to have tank/heal/dps just with more variety. Which I'm happy about because there's just no other way to do it without combat devolving into a japanese console martial arts killfest.
Actually, if you read the original blog entry about death and healing, you can see their explanation of what they mean when they talk about removing the holy trinity.
They're talking about removing the very stratified, specific roles. For one thing, you simply can't have somebody who just takes all the damage while he's healed, because any class would drop from absorbing all the damage with their face.
Also, there's no ability to target other players, and spells that heal other people are weak. They still have a trinity, but it's a redesigned one.
It's not like there's some big mystery about what Arenanet said. It's supposed to be based more around control/support/dps, with healing falling under support as a minor part of it, and tanking being a sort of subset of control.
Just balanced differently, that's all, but it's definitely not the standard holy trinity. They never said they were removing all roles, but it's hard to line the holy trinity up with GW2 gameplay, it doesn't quite work.
I knew it, you dont give a damn, an obious sign that you like TOR more in a biased fashion.
I hope that you don't lose sleep over my signature.. but then again i don't give a damn

That was really uncalled for. Your hate is dripping out of the sarcasm.
Hate? REALLY?
That makes me a little sad, that you see hate in a post obviously meant as the most light-hearted of ribbing.
I have nothing but love for my fellow gamer.
I understand perfectly well while fans of both games defend their games. It's because for fairly obvious reasons, fans of a game tend to be more well read on the particular game they like, and it's annoying to see people who don't know what they're talking about say things.
You won't find me on the Star Wars forum, saying things like 'I dislike the game because it's basically single player', or 'because the graphics look like things that make me sad', or anything like that.
You should really lighten up a bit, if you see me joking about the way fans of games (Notice I even say fans, not fanboys or anything derogatory... (Though fan is short for fanatic, so I guess that could be considered derogatory, but I digress) defend their own games and it makes you think I'm full of hate.
Hard to lighten up when you try to make SWTOR fans look like complete tools in comparison to GW2. I am interested in both games and i am sick of this back and forth between two sides. What about players like me who visit both forums and have to go through 20 crap posts to find one little nugget of valid information?
I'm sorry, I missed the part of my post where I said '... but when I say the exact same thing about future GW2 players, it isn't with sarcasm at ALL.
No, they truly ARE all gentlemen scholars of amazing refinement, and every word that drips forth from their mouth is like the purest spun gold, shining in the air for all to adore. And despite the fact this sounds like sarcasm, it's only sarcasm for SW:ToR, but the god honest truth for GW2 fans'.
Nah. Fans are fans. If a game doesn't have at least some crazy fans, it's obviously not a very good game, because nobody can get worked up about it. The only games you don't see with crazy fans are games like 'Backgammon for Windows 95'
I think if you look at post history, you'll find more negative things from you about GW2 than you'll find from me about SW:TOR.
Heck, I even like rail shooters, so that's one area I like SW:TOR more than some fans.
C'mon, laugh a little!
Funny because i hardly said anything about GW2 which can be considered negative unless if my opinion differs from your is considered as negative. Sorry for the confusion and if it helps jusdging by your responces here, your mother wasn't lying when she said you were special lol.
Personally I don't think this game is going to be able to do everything people expect but what game does. I like almost every mmo that releases, I'll be trying GW2 just like I did most recentily with Rift and soon to be SWTOR, TSW, etc. It looks like a lot of fun and I hope they can implement even half of what has been talked about.
However I don't really understand how GW2 fans here can think that there is some sort of large anti-GW2 hate going on in these forums. Whenever I check the GW2 forum here its full of positive posts. Certainly not even a 10th of the hatefest that is going on with SWTOR and earlier Rift. Which I don't really understand except that one, GW2, promises to be an mmo that is not an mmo.
I don't think that's going to happen, but then again I don't think Rift/SWTOR are "exact clones of WoW argebargle!11!!" either. I'm sure I will like them all for what they bring and I don't understand why so many people seem to be unhinged either for or against pieces of entertainment software. But if anything on the mmorpg.com forums GW2 seems to be the rare game that has the crazies FOR it instead of against it.
While I can see your point, you also have to keep in mind how much information has been released about the game already.
Now take that information and store it and then go and read how much of that information has been either misinterpreted, misunderstood, mislabled, added to or taken away from, etc etc and read how many of the "crazies like myself" aren't actually bashing people for having a difference of opinion. Only people have inaccuracies in their information. Hell, I spend more time trying to explain things or directing people where to find the correct information than I do voicing opinions. Sure there is a lot of positive posts and negative posts. But when I go back and read I see it is either bad information or people who fail to accept that although not all share their opinion on the game, sometimes they base their negativity on something that was never there to begin with. Like the 2 bloggers inthe OP's link. Just sayen.
The difference is that in the GW2 forums here, what you describe as "how much information has been released about the game already" is described on the SWTOR forums as "hype". To me they are the same thing, but to people on the edges of the seesaw its either ironclad true information or lying hype. Neither game has actually released, what we have for both games is equally possibly valid or invalid. Yet on this forum the unreasonable people tilt in opposite directions with GW2 and SWTOR.
Its odd to see a game essentially get a pass from mmorpg.com forum posters but its even odder to see fans of those games feel that they are also being picked on by those same posters. Its just not the case.
Fans of Guild Wars 2 aren't getting picked on because the fans have read up on the game and know exactly what to expect as the game currently stands. The people who are getting "picked on" are those who over-sensationalize the game based on misinterpreted and misunderstood information released by the developers.
I find myself repeating this a lot, probably due to that awful word "hype" which clearly means different things to different people but...
Arena Net does not release information about Guild Wars 2 until it is in the game and it is working how they want it to work. Then they come out and describe exactly how the system is working currently and show those features in the next demo available to players.
So, with that being said, I'm going to come out and say that all the information released about the game is iron clad true, however, Guild Wars 2 is still under development. So while features may be implemented into the current build of the game right now, it doesn't mean they're not subject to change much like the properties regarding skills and their energy use or the appearance of the Sylvari. And when features are changed/improved or are under the process of being changed/improved, Arena Net tells us they'll release more information on it when they're finished changing/improving.
The gist of what I'm trying to say is that Arena Net is very open about the development of Guild Wars 2 so it's hard to find any statement of the developer talking about a feature in the game that's very likely to not have been put in the game.
So when I do see people who make statements akin to "You will be sourly disappointed when you see that Guild Wars 2 is nothing how you expected it to be" or "Guild Wars 2 is all hype but it remains to be seen if they can live up to these expectations", I really just cringe, because either who they were responding to has legitimently shown praise for the actual features that Guild Wars 2 is offering as shown by the demo footage and blog posts because they researched it, or the person does have very over-the-top expectations about the game that is in no way supported by anything the developers have said. In the former, the respondent is wrong, whereas in the latter, they are right. I'm not sure where I was going with this...
I knew it, you dont give a damn, an obious sign that you like TOR more in a biased fashion.

Hmm, I think we're defining negative in a different way.
If you say 'There is this feature of GW2 that I do not like', then that is what I mean by negative.
I didn't mean negative as in mindlessly bashing or trolling or something.
I think it's perfectly possible to have a legitimate dislike of a particular feature because it doesn't meet your tastes, and to consider that a negative comment.
If I said 'I don't really like the texture of cheap apples', that would be a negative comment, for example.
So listing less liked features would be you listing negatives.
I'm not sure what you think of when I talk about negative. Trolling? Being hateful? Being spiteful?
Here. I'll give you a free negative from me, about SW:TOR.
At the rate I play games, it'll cost me a few hundred dollars just to beat all the storylines.
That's why I don't like sub games. I can't get my money's worth because I just don't play enough, or fast enough.
That isn't saying SW:TOR is bad, it's just something I personally find unappealing. I can even list negatives for GW2! I'm talented that way.
For example, I would really like to be able to switch servers freely to talk with friends, but that's something they've been suspiciously quiet on, and I'm suspecting I'm going to find it a lot harder to play with my friends than I thought it would be.
There is no such thing as GW2 vs SWTOR fans. It does not exist.
The only thing that exists is idiots vs idiots.
I don't care whether that or other particular idiot prefers GW2 or TOR. Any who gets in this kind of stupid argument of GW2 vs TOR or whichever is better is just dumb retard.
I prefer GW2 a lot more than SWTOR. I also prefer brunette girls a lot more than blondes, does that mean the guy who likes TOR and blondes a lot more is wrong? For fucks sake NOO =, it does not.
Stop your freaking ignorance. For me every person that argues about which game is better is just a troll that should return to his cave.

That actually has me worried too, because a lot of their emphasis is on building communities, but they understand these two conflicting philosophies in regards to cross-world friends.
However, I'm confident that they're in favor of being able to play with friends over the community building, and will likely only restrict temporary access to WvWvW for people who moved to another world/server because that's generally where the server switching problems apply.

Sure I agree with what you said, I'm looking forward to GW2's implementation of these mechanics. What is perplexing is how on this site there can be so such a wild swing between the representation of and reaction to essentially two different flavors of the same core mechanic. As someone said upthread, I guess its just the cool kids thing going on at Internet High.

Well, there's advantages to the particular implementation Arenanet is using.
For one thing, it means there's not really any waiting for one particular class to come around.
It's basically a change in game design philosophy.
The idea is that you can play with anybody at anytime with any character.
It's really just two different design ideas and philosophy. They are the same in several ways, but it's the differences that are important.
Hey, but some people really LIKE dedicated healers, so there's obviously pluses and minuses to both styles.
... but I wouldn't say it's just a 'cool kids' thing. It's a difference in taste. Maybe some people are doing it because they think it's cool, but some people genuinely have problems with the standard holy trinity design, and are glad to see something different.

See this is what I don't get, what you just described is exactly the same for SWTOR or any unreleased game for that matter. I can't argue with any of what you posted. All any of us have is what the developer tells us, which may or may not change at actual release. Why does this elicit 10 times more craziness for SWTOR? Its not as if its being developed by a 3 person indie company. And believe me, on this site at least GW2 sees far less hate ... the SWTOR forum is a daily barrage of copy cat "Why I hate SWTOR and all who want to play it" threads heh.
There's no need to defend GW2, I'm not talking about its fans or the game which I will be playing, I'm talking about people who like to troll the mmorpg.com game forums. Its just odd that GW2 sees so relatively little of it compared to any other unreleased game.

Now this I can agree on. While I don't know enough about every detail about the game to warrant commenting on the TOR section, i do try to pop in and get the jist of what's going on. It is really hard to get accurate info on TOR at times because lot of the threads do become a flame war. While I have more than a few things I dont like about it, I don't feel that I won't try it at some point when I want something different. I try to give MMO's a shot so I can form my own opinion.
While I do share the frustration with the game that some of the people feel the need to state on a regular basis, and that is that it feels a lot like other MMO's out there with very little in the way of actually new, I don't understand why so many continiue to knock it or pit it against another game to show why some think it's inferior. I do see what you speak of and it is rediculouse. But it is that way for all games so you just have to learn who to take with a grain of salt, and who to block altogether.
I heard they blew all their budget on the voice acting and didn't have enough left over to put WvWvW in at launch.
It would've required Arena Net to bring 1000+ demo machines to show off WvWvW at Gamescon... which, for obvious reasons, was not possible.
Or .. since if they are working on WvWvW back home, they have to be testing it. So they could have just brought a film of said testing, which would have at least been better than nothing. I think they are just doing what all the other companies are doing and rationing information between the (almost too numerous) conventions.

Anyway, to the OP, I leave you this.
when i use to go to school they let me ride a short bus that had all sorts of specal people, i sat at the frotn because the front is the most special. and all the kids use to say how it was the special bus so it must be true
He's right! It's a fact that Guild Wars 2 will not have a single subscriber! Le gasp!
Protip: Guild Wars 2 does not have a subscription fee, therefore you can not subscribe.
SERIOUSLY!!!
To each their own dammit.
This guy is a great example of that.
RIP Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan and Paul Gray.
Or .. since if they are working on WvWvW back home, they have to be testing it. So they could have just brought a film of said testing, which would have at least been better than nothing. I think they are just doing what all the other companies are doing and rationing information between the (almost too numerous) conventions.
