Fans of Guild Wars 2 aren't getting picked on because the fans have read up on the game and know exactly what to expect as the game currently stands. The people who are getting "picked on" are those who over-sensationalize the game based on misinterpreted and misunderstood information released by the developers.
I find myself repeating this a lot, probably due to that awful word "hype" which clearly means different things to different people but...
Arena Net does not release information about Guild Wars 2 until it is in the game and it is working how they want it to work. Then they come out and describe exactly how the system is working currently and show those features in the next demo available to players.
So, with that being said, I'm going to come out and say that all the information released about the game is iron clad true, however, Guild Wars 2 is still under development. So while features may be implemented into the current build of the game right now, it doesn't mean they're not subject to change much like the properties regarding skills and their energy use or the appearance of the Sylvari. And when features are changed/improved or are under the process of being changed/improved, Arena Net tells us they'll release more information on it when they're finished changing/improving.
The gist of what I'm trying to say is that Arena Net is very open about the development of Guild Wars 2 so it's hard to find any statement of the developer talking about a feature in the game that's very likely to not have been put in the game.
So when I do see people who make statements akin to "You will be sourly disappointed when you see that Guild Wars 2 is nothing how you expected it to be" or "Guild Wars 2 is all hype but it remains to be seen if they can live up to these expectations", I really just cringe, because either who they were responding to has legitimently shown praise for the actual features that Guild Wars 2 is offering as shown by the demo footage and blog posts because they researched it, or the person does have very over-the-top expectations about the game that is in no way supported by anything the developers have said. In the former, the respondent is wrong, whereas in the latter, they are right. I'm not sure where I was going with this...
See this is what I don't get, what you just described is exactly the same for SWTOR or any unreleased game for that matter. I can't argue with any of what you posted. All any of us have is what the developer tells us, which may or may not change at actual release. Why does this elicit 10 times more craziness for SWTOR? Its not as if its being developed by a 3 person indie company. And believe me, on this site at least GW2 sees far less hate ... the SWTOR forum is a daily barrage of copy cat "Why I hate SWTOR and all who want to play it" threads heh.
There's no need to defend GW2, I'm not talking about its fans or the game which I will be playing, I'm talking about people who like to troll the mmorpg.com game forums. Its just odd that GW2 sees so relatively little of it compared to any other unreleased game.

I heard they blew all their budget on the voice acting and didn't have enough left over to put WvWvW in at launch.
It would've required Arena Net to bring 1000+ demo machines to show off WvWvW at Gamescon... which, for obvious reasons, was not possible.
Or .. since if they are working on WvWvW back home, they have to be testing it. So they could have just brought a film of said testing, which would have at least been better than nothing. I think they are just doing what all the other companies are doing and rationing information between the (almost too numerous) conventions.
Unfounded conspiracy theories are fun, except when they are lame =/
Yeah obviously they are keeping stuff away. Like the last profession. The game is not out yet. They felt structured was in a better shape to show than WvWvW, and that's that.

yeah this is probably pretty accurate but can you blame them? imagine if they released as much information as the public actually wants and then saying "It'll be ready when it's ready" If Anet releases too much info some will take it as a sign the games release is apon us and if that turned out to not be the case there would be an uproar.

I think the e-sport aspect is great, i have nothing against this. I am pretty sure this was setup this way just for the PvP demos. I didn't see anyone having a lot of options on looks, gear, skills and such so I am pretty sure it was a generic setup to keep the people flowing through the booth rather than giving each person a lot of time to customize. No you won't have to have a seperate toon to play the PvP and PvE content if that's what you were asking.

Well, whenspeaking of why SWTOR gets trolled more often than GW2 (which is hardly ever), I would say it's because of how SWTOR is being presented to the public.
From what we've been shown, SWTOR looks like another quest hub based mmo with talent trees, locked in character roles, etc. It's a clone of what other games have done in the past, and it looks like just another post-WoW era mmo. If you look at the amount of times fans have been burned by big promises only to find that it's just WoW with a different skin, well it's not hard to see why people have become jaded.
Between what is being shown of GW2 and SWTOR, GW2 looks like it's moving in a different direction. Different system for handling various forms of pve, less defined class roles for each profession, and if GW2 is like GW1 then also a lack of an actual neverending gear grind.
At least that is my perception of how things are unfolding. Both games will have success, but SWTOR will always receive more hate as just another "wow clone".
As for critics worried about GW2. I haven't seen anyone considered to be mainstream have any major complaints about GW2. Whether this is telling or not isn't clear, because anyone can be enamored by anything for the first 40 min of a demo. However, what seems to be true is that ANet has captured the minds of those who have grown weary of the post-wow era mmos, and finally have something to be excited about.

Its another thing the so called "critics" did, they don't understand the game and still make an opinion, instead of researching on it.
Basically, you create a character and can start PvPing right away, you get boosted to lvl 80, all skills and traits set, and any weapons avaiable, being all the same in terms of stats. Your armor also gets died a certain color, depending on your team.
When you come out, you have that char that you just created, can keep on lvling it if you want, but what you do outside has nothing to do with the structured PvP system.

accually, thats got me thinking... how wil we tell peop[le apart in WvWvW, will they dye us colours also? or will they use another way

That's a good question we will have to wait to find out. Could be 3 different colors or maybe their outline is red or different colors...

They havent released any info on this, so I wouldnt know, better wait for WvWvW presentation than speculate
Ye i think thats the all point here, stat wise we already knew they want to level up toon in a e-sport setting, if you don't understand this i don't think there is anything to talk about.
Now when it come to visual, its also very important to have the team color very visible, thats maybe why they choose to just have to remake a toon entirely for the event, its just way easier like this. And here i don't know where to stand, if you need to be able to spot the other team on first sight, some individual visual is still very important to me. Even in most fps you can pick quiet a few visual to give your toon some personality. Here i understand the critic really, i would rather have my normal toon visual (my prefered color and armor, and that shiny weapon of mine) even if that mean the character have to wear some stupid red party hat for exemple.

You don't have to create new toon. You can play with your main char anytime you wish. They just had premade chars for PvP. Tho i suspect you could make new char and jump straight into pvp with everything unlocked.

Yes so if that is the actual reason then they will most likely NEVER be able to do a WvWvW live demo at any event. So that means they will have to show a VIDEO of WvWvW instead, something it seems they should have been able to do for the biggest Euro gaming convention but didn't.
So that means that either WvWvW is in no fit state to show, IE they can't live up to their promise of massive battles ALA AOC, which I doubt. Or that these two twonk bloggers we are making fun of are actually correct and WvWvW will not be in the game at launch or at all, again something I seriously doubt. Or the most likely reason, just like the final class details, WvWvW wasn't shown, is that they want something fresh left over for future news releases and for the other gaming conventions they still have to go to. So they highlighted PVP this time round and put WvWvW on the back burner to wow us with at a later date.
I'd really like to think they are just rationing the game information rather than to think they really have a couple of years or more of work left to go before we get to see the game.
"Gypsies, tramps, and thieves, we were called by the Admin of the site . . . "
Personally I think the only way they can demo WvWvW is in a late open beta weekend. Of course to do it they have to have three worlds populated with at least hmmm 1000 characters each? Would be a nice last hurrah to the open beta period and probably provide some nice stress testing. Only problem I see is that everyone would be low level and it really wouldn't give a sense of what WvWvW will really be after launch.
That said do I actually care of they demo WvWvW? - nope - would rather play the game sooner and discover WvWvW after launch.
Personally I'm fine with everything they've shown so far and am actually not wanting them to spill too much more information - getting to the point that it seems like there will be very few surprises.
Open World Pvp in Guild wars 2 with 1 faction is so stupid unless they put it like Lineage 2 . when u kill some1 u get flagged, ur name turn red and purple and when u get in town u get rape by the guard,
lineage 2 was good at that, i think u had to hold Shift to attack some1.
but open world pvp at release date lol mass death at the spawn
maybe they should add day like open world pvp week where u can kill anyone anywhere would be cool but other then that i dont see open world pvp in guild wars 2 since 1 faction again each other sound stupid to me
anyway that was only my opinion what u guys think?
~The only opinion that matters is your own.Everything else is just advice,~

Gaming conventions aren't a place to show videos of something the players won't get their hands on, to be completely honest. It's the reason Arena Net didn't go to E3, because that was for press only and wouldn't put the game in the hands of the fans.
It's more than likely a few reasons, but Arena Net did come out and say specifically that they could not show WvWvW at Gamescon because they did not have enough demo stations. It could very well be that the game is not in a fit state to show. Who says this means they can't live up to their "promise"? The game won't be released until it's ready, and this includes World vs World vs World being fine tuned as much as possible before they release it to the public. And they're also going to do closed betas which would be the true test for reaction/improvements for WvWvW since they'd have enough people to observe the battles play out.
They will likely never be able to show WvWvW at a gaming convention but can certainly make it playable during any closed/open betas.

"I am not a robot. I am a unicorn."
This thread makes me laugh. Then my head starts to hurt and I have go read something else.
accually, thats got me thinking... how wil we tell peop[le apart in WvWvW, will they dye us colours also? or will they use another way
That's a good question we will have to wait to find out. Could be 3 different colors or maybe their outline is red or different colors...
My theme song.
They havent released any info on this, so I wouldnt know, better wait for WvWvW presentation than speculate
"I am not a robot. I am a unicorn."
Ye thats what i understood too, i just didn't used a very precise language. Thats what i meant create a new toon just for the pvp event purpose.
Sigh.
Bloggers count as critics now, too?

There are really 13 pages for this? Well done OP.
When you say Critics, I thought you meant Critics, not random bloggers.
How much WoW could a WoWhater hate, if a WoWhater could hate WoW?
As much WoW as a WoWhater would, if a WoWhater could hate WoW.
