The Elder Scrolls (and Fallout 3) aren't about beating the main quest. It is about exploring the world, roleplay you actually live there (optional), doing the many (tons) of sidequests...and whatever other stuff there is to do in an Elder Scrolls game. Not to mention PC users can download mods that can greatly expand the games length.
But, compared to 75 minutes for Fallout 3 (which I still haven't beaten, because I never play Bethesda games for beating them and I have over 600 hours on FO3)...that tells me there is a LOT more content in Skyrim, than their previous games (in terms of length anyway).
I have never understand how a rush through can be a joyfull gameplay experience. It takes anything fun out of the game...i played many games 100s of hours and in maybe 20% of them i have ended the mainquest bcs i play that long that i changed the os, some hardware, started new bcs of patches that improved and added gameplay and mostly bcs if i end a mainquest i evnetually have no reason to come back and play again

If you're playing an elder scrolls or bethesda game for the main story and nothing more.. you're playing the wrong games.
Both Oblivion and Fallout3 (same with NewVegas even though Obsidian did it) were notoriously short if you only followed the main story. I can't say for sure how short since i've never been able to ignore the worlds and any the side stuff they put in there, which imo has always been done much better than the main story.
Meh. The article did say the QA playtester played purely for speed and the main quest, just like he did for FO3. As others mentioned, the central quest lines for Bethesda RPGs are pretty short. It's just the players get lost in the game world, i.e. sidetracked with all sorts of stuff, and the game doesn't force you down that main quest.
I hadn't beaten Morrowind for like 1 year since I was doing other stuff in the game, esp. with mods adding onto and altering the game itself.
IIRC, when Oblivion came out, there was a bit of hooplah around the fact that it was faster, easier to beat the game as low level as possible than having a high level, fully decked out toon. It was because of the auto-levelling system adjusting NPC type, quality, and gear based on player level. So even common roadside bandits were decked out in the best armor, late-game gear. It also, IMO, destroys any reason to develop my character. One of the first important mods for Oblivion removed the auto-levelling feature. It was a godsend of sorts.

I agree. Trying to speed play this game is like saying [name of beautiful woman] sexed in just 2 minutes! How fast can you get it on?
You should get a job at Fox new network or something for providing useless news and giving them a dramatic twist....
The post DOES say the following....
" Bethesda has claimed it will take players around 30 hours to beat the game's central quest, not including the time it takes them to father (or mother) a dynasty of lizard children."
These games are true RPGs. Well, as close as one can get without having a complete sandbox. :P
This is why Bethesda > Bioware. The main story doesn't matter one bit, because the world itself is more important.
Give me a bethesda MMORPG!
Bethesda would completly fail at an MMORPG. Speed levelers will be more vast and care less in an MMO. It's fine to be good at a story but power gamers couldn't careless about story and they drive MMOs into the ground or atleast into Freemium.
i spent the $60.00 on Rage Anarchy Edition. from ID. i got 40 hours playing it through one time. it was beautiful. the AI is amazing, the combat and weapons were spectacular. The driving part of the game is so clean and responsive and fun.
It was like going to disneyland for a week, for 60 bucks. and i will say i had more fun in Rage in 40 hours from start to finish, then the years i have played MMOs. I have finals next week then im going to try it on Nightmare level. It was scary in parts which got my hair up, and reminded me i hadn't finished Dead Space 2 yet.
Favorite mission, was Jackal Canyon. i have never seen anything so pretty. favorite game aspect about Rage, was the AI. two mobs in a room, one with his back to the other. i shot the one behind. he dead. the other turns around and says " did you hear what i said? hey!! he's dead. what the ...."
pure enjoyment. that's how i like my games. like a good book i can't put it down.
I also vote for a Bethesda MMO. or an Id games MMO. actually a combination of Id games combat, Dead Island theme, set in a bethesda designed world. would be primo.
These games are true RPGs. Well, as close as one can get without having a complete sandbox. :P
This is why Bethesda > Bioware. The main story doesn't matter one bit, because the world itself is more important.

Replace "Bethesda" in your post with "Bioware" and you'll make my point for me.
Bioware does story. Bethesda does worlds. Which one fits better in an MMORPG?

Bioware does story. Bethesda does worlds. Which one fits better in an MMORPG?
Yes, cause you know MMOers give a crap about "worlds". Thats why they have mounts to get through it quicker, flying mounts to skip over everything and instant teleports to ignore it completely. Yeap, sounds like worlds means a lot. Derp.

So now by your own admission people do not like story, and they do not like the game world.
What exactly do people like? And in which of these areas would a Bethetsda MMORPG be lacking?

The thing that drives people to play MMOs is building up ones character but they are not interested in spending hours listening to whiny NPCs or running 10 miles to do a quest that gives them little reward for it. A company that specializes in single player RPGs like Bethesda or Bioware don't know the troubles of making an MMO and will resort to copying WoW to fill in the lack of knowleadge. Now we will have a WoW clone with elements of single player RPGs that you have to pay 15 a month to keep playing. Though Beth and Bio will do initially well simply based on the fact of their names but yeah, single player turned MMO experiences might work but I am pretty sure people will skip the aspects that make them special to concentrate on building up their characters.

Generally don't most like having snazzy phallic objects with big numbers to lord over other people's pahllic objects with not as big numbers in order to prove they are the best at getting phallic objects with big numbers?
More or less, stick people in a cube with lights that blink and a ticker that counts up every time they whack a mole on the head and you'll get more subs than some one who gives you a pretty narrative or painting to enjoy.
I think that's his point, dunno.
Generally I actually like the idea of bethesda and bioware MMOs, depending on whether or not they see with game mechanics need to be changed to make it work/fun.

A 2 hour long main plot any game is a little disappointing, but obviously being an Elder Scrolls game it doesn't really say all that much given that there will hopefully be alot of sidequests and content to play through.
Comments
Someone who has been testing the game for a year knows the main quest by heart.
I am Shocked.
Have a sense of humor, no need to get ALL MODDY ! A Simpson's quote shouldn't be worth a warning. You are lucky anyone is bothering to read this rag.
2 and a quarter compared to 75 min for Fallout 3? This game is gonna be pretty epic.
OMG...yeah by the QA and Dev that now the game inside and out.

That's what I was thinking. I also have to wonder what the difficulty was set to (if there is a slider like Oblivion).
People do Rubik's Cubes in 5 to 10 seconds.
I could beat Fallout 3/NV in about 2 to 3 hours. Yet I still managed to get over a hundred in each.

how is this an issue? i could play oblivion through in under 3 hours if i wanted too...yet i have over 110+ hours logged into it.......
its not always about the destination, its about the journey.

You are just ripping yourself off if you buy a game just to beat the main questline as fast as possible.
Not buying the game is beating it!
I want to get the new arkham game that's coming out but think the game might not last long.
