Honestly, this is my biggest worry with the game. I appreciate all the features, the dodge mechanics, etc... All fine and good.
But GW1 was touted as the next breath of fresh air when it was released. Many people were parading it around like the innovation that would change the genre. I was one of the people that bought it when it came out. I uninstalled it in less than a week. Boring gameplay. Everything instanced. It felt like a 2D game with 3D graphics. Your character just kind of floated in the air when casting spells and the melee animations didn't seem to relay any impact. I couldn't get into the story at all. In fact, I didn't understand the quick changes in time and how it was supposed to relate to me. One second the grawl attack, the next I'm 20 years into the future and the Grawl have overrun the place.
I understand that a lot of people liked the game. I'm just not one of them. I will probably try out GW2 when it comes out, but I am keeping my expectations much lower this time.
As a side note - trust me, the gameplay videos looked great for GW1, too, so I wouldn't start basing my opinion of that.
EDIT - I should add that I tried playing GW1 a few times, not just when it came out. Last time was sometime last winter. Same result. Just couldn't get into it. It's like a girl who everyone tells you is so hot, but she just doesn't do it for you.
As said before, GW1 is not an mmorpg, nor did Anet ever say it is. GW2 however is an actual mmorpg so it's difficult to compare them and that is far from the only difference between the two. On the other hand you are right to be careful, no one should have blind trust in anyone or anything.
P.S. The quick change in time was only between the tutorial and the rest of the game and it were the Charr, not the Grawl. A lot of people still hate the Charr for what they did to the beautiful tutorial area which look like shit afterwards so for a lot of people the story actually did something.

Given the fact that GW1 received awards for being an MMORPG it's hard to keep the comparison to other games in the genre down. It's like giving an electric car a Motortrend award and then coming out and saying that it shouldn't be compared to gas engine cars. It already has been.
I don't. As soon as I saw the freakin' anime bunny rabbit things as a playable race I stopped reading about GW2.
I'm sure it will be a [insert superlatives here] game, just not for me.

Comparing is not the same as equating (sp?). Anet has always maintained it is a CORPG. It is not massive, only in towns. Basically it functions like Diablo, with the difference being that there are towns instead of chatrooms.

Not playing the race because of the looks of one of the races... Your loss
Because NCSOFT showed me with AION that they can make a very fluid, virtually bug-free game. Take that solid game and add in the amazing artwork/style/proposed mechanics and you have me way stoked to play GW2

Reading some of the replies in this thread has REALLY turned me off of GW2. The rampant fanboism seen here is sickening.
Thats sound. I mean if the majority of people are excited about a game, and say why, then I guess there's no reason to play it. People have no taste anyways. Only you do. Dont believe the hype. If people are flocking to a game because it offers innovation, change, fun, and seems interesting, then we cant have THAT! Goodness.....I mean if we did that, we'd all be playing something pretty darn good. Too much of a good thing is bad. Yes sir. Mediocre is where its at. Yes....mediocre.
No game is perfect. You have to take the good with the bad. I'll be playing my fair share of SW:TOR in two months, but you better believe I have criticized aspects of its gameplay which I do not like. Almost every Guild Wars 2 thread I encounter here on mmorpg.com is filled with rampant praise for the game and for Anet along with double standards where the criticisms of other upcoming MMORPGs simply don't seem to find their way to this game even though they are just as valid. The number one concern I have about GW2 is longevity, and I've yet to hear anything from Anet or from any forum poster explaining to me how GW2 will retain players over a long period of time given how the game deemphasizes the grind, which is really what keeps people playing these games to begin with. If anything, I usually hear people admitting that the game probably won't have the longevity of a more traditional MMO but that they'll play it anyway because that's what they did in GW1...
I think that's fair. You should be able to look critically at your favorite game.
As far as longevity though, it's kind of a loaded word. "Longevity" often means having to log in every single day just to gear up, collect, and grind to go raiding. I hope GW2 doesn't require this.
On the other hand, GW2 does have a ton of reasons to keep playing:
WvWvW - Taking keeps, and fighting for your server is always fun
Structured PvP - Like TF2, you can jump in play a match or two and then go do whatever
Level scaling - You can go play dynamic events you missed the first time around since the event will scale you down to its level.
Dungeons - I'm sure there will be a few higher difficulty dungeons with nice armor to keep people occupied
Explore - With all of the underwater areas that are easy to miss, I plan on just wandering around a bit
Personal Story - Reroll. Play a new race/class and make a new story.
For a $60 box price, and no monthly fee that seems like a lot of longevity. It does not mean you have to log in every single day however. To me, that kind of longevity is just an uninspired a way to keep gamers paying that subscription fee.
I don't. As soon as I saw the freakin' anime bunny rabbit things as a playable race I stopped reading about GW2.

I’ve been following the development of the game for a few years now and while I have yet to put hands on it I still find myself looking for new videos, posts, artwork, interviews etc.
I’ve played MMORPGs for a long time now and my biggest problem is not with the games themselves but with the community that the games tend to build. I’m sure there are plenty of games that contradict my experience however I find it disheartening that every game I’ve tried in the last 3 years has had the same crowd. People who kill steal, node steal, gank, grief, troll etc. The games don’t do much to make a community of people but in my opinion tend to ostracize players and pit them against each other even when playing on the same faction.
My hope for Guild Wars 2 is that the competition is weeded out and playing as a community comes back. Shared kills, individual nodes, one faction, dynamic events, proximity grouping (sharing benefits from people close by vs having to group) and so on. What this makes me think, and hope for, is that while in the PVE realm you’ll be looking forward to playing with other people rather than seeing them as a nuisance. Throw in things like max level/gear aka skill based pvp and WvWvW, which I am intrigued by and would like to hear more about, and I’m sold.
TLDNR: I have faith in this game because I believe that it’s worth having faith in.
Why are people all over this game? not trying to hate on the game, it will have its niche but the game play doesnt look special. The voices over quests lack real animation. The PvP looks played out. The graphics are good, but that just means you need a crazy computer for boss fights and large scale anything.
I have no idea. GW1 was a complete failure and Anet have been working on creating a sequel and basically improving on what the first game lacked, which kinda means GW2 will be a bigger failure.

The developers who made GW and the ones who made Aion are completely separate. And while Anet has essentially been made NCSoft West they are also essentially independent. I do not believe NCSoft proper has much of anything to do with how they run their development and Idon't think Anet had much effect on Aion's development.
Yes they are both Studios published and now (but not originally) owned by NCsoft, but there is no way the 3 main founders of Anet are being told what to do in development by NCSoft guys. They would leave I guarantee it.
I believe there was some contact between Anet and the Aion developers during the western "Beta". But Aion was copletely implemented in Korea by koreans for koreans at that point. Anet only helped with some admin and talent to westernize the interface and advise on leveling.
It has its potential to finally try some new ideas in the MMORPG world, which has largely become stale. Sure, parts of it has been done before, but if nothing else the event system draws me in. Sure that to has been done here and there, but if the world is truely persistant, and when places are lost it makes a true impact, that will impress me.
I actually have no faith at all in this game. I like a lot of what they're saying and trying to do, and if they pull it off I'll definitely be buying and playing this game. Will they actually do it? I have plenty of doubts about that one.
Faith? Nah, but I do expect the game to be fun. For me, it's not really because of the game's features (although most are pretty cool), I really enjoyed Guild Wars trilogy and I see no reason why GW2 will not be up GW1 standards. I still play GW1 every now and then, will be nice to move on to something new.
Been skimming through the thread and I find it so pathetic how people are constantly refered to as "fanboys", just because they are biased towards a paticular product. Why are we, the well informed GW2 follwers, not allowed to say shower GW2 with praise, when it is on it's track to be something we may actually fully enjoyed.
Like me. I'm currently playing Rift and while I enjoy some aspects of it (enough to max out 4 separate characters), there are a lot of things that just piss me off and GW2 seems to be the only game that's fixing those issues. Like not being able to play with a friend who's on a different quest step, or the PvP being unbalanced & unplayable with my Rank 2 Cleric. I just can't shower SW:TOR with praise, because even though it will be a game I'd enjoy (just like Rift), it's still riddled with the same issues I have with Rift. So I guess I'll be refered to as a "GW2 Fanboy" because I can't name a feature I don't like about the game... yet.
I agree 100% here and not just about GW2 this goes for every game. Just because someone posts positively about a game it doesn't mean they're some blind lackey for a product. It's those that get bent out of shape because someone makes a point about a game that may not be overly postive that are the problem. Even then I hate words like fanboi so I don't use them. I prefer to call them yes men, as that's exactly what they are.

My faith is basically comming from the fact that all basics and the engine were made by Jeff Strain, he is still the best guy making MMOs now and I am also looking forward to his new project with Undead labs.
ANET have a surprisingly good and experienced team. while I am sure not everyone will like the game I think it will fit me pretty nicely, I loved the first GW and feel that items have gotten too much spotlights in modern MMOs.
I think though that most raiders wont like the game at all, all massive fights are none instanced and anyone can join together with the fact that you can't grind yourself a huge advantage by getting OPed gear.
And unless things have changed a lot since Jeff quit, I think some casuals wont like it either since I think it will be more difficult than most modern MMOs, at least stuff like dungeons and the really high level zones. Being a casual does not mean you suck and some casuals in GW have completed really hard stuff like Drok and the hard mode but some casuals do indeed play bad and they will eventually tire, but since they are casuals that will be after 6+ months.
On the other hand do I feel that making a game for everyone is a huge misstake, since that leads to many compromizes and it is better making a group really happy then everyone content in my book.
No game is perfect. You have to take the good with the bad.
I'll be playing my fair share of SW:TOR in two months, but you better believe I have criticized aspects of its gameplay which I do not like. Where the hell of you been? There is tons of criticism about GW2 just read through the pages and read the threads you will see a lot of comments that are not just rampant praise! Plus who the hell cares the only valid criticism about a game pre launch is that you do not like the design choices of the developer. Any other criticism about the game is idle chatter that does as much good as breathing toxic gas, in other words it does no good.
I also have to say I find it humorous that you are going to play a game because fans speak out for the things they like, well have fun not playing any games ever again. You better skip Skyrim, Battlefield 3, TOR, ME3 because you can find fans praising those games to if you look! If you do not skip those games that will make you a hypocrite and we both know you do not want to be that. So have fun never playing a game again!!!

I actually agree with both of you here, while how people feel about a game shouldn't influence how I feel about it. I also think having too many yes men around in a games community can be severely detrimental to it's development, I can't say that's not what I've been seeing a whole lot of when it comes to GW2 (yes men).
I've been on this forum for a long long time, not once have I seen a game with this amount of unquestionable support and so many gaurantees of a great game by any games community.
Oh yes, we are all yes men after all only yes men would present the positive view of a game design in thread filled with negative of said design. It could not be that we like the design and we feel like adding that view point to threads when the opposite is expressed! Believe me I will vote with my dollars if GW2 turns out not to be fun by skipping the expansions to it. But it will be a cold day in hell before I apology to you or SuperXero89 for liking the design of a game and supporting that design!

Amen!
Apparently it is because we are not allowed to say we like a game anymore without saying the bad parts about it with the same breath. In all fairness, after all we GW2 fans must be stupid enough to believe any game we like is perfect and without any flaws, otherwise everyone would not be calling us “fanboys”.
