I have really big hopes in GW2 restoring the MMO genre to its former glory
Really? When was the genre comprised of hack and slash titles? Or perhaps you really do mean MMOs which consist of games like GW1. If that's the case, that is one thing. GW2 will undoubtely be good, but dont think for a second that it is a spiritual sucessor to any of the original MMORPGs. Alot of the strategy and contemplation have been removed from this game to appease the ADD youth who just want to be eye f**ked. Unfortunately this game is more along the lines of the MMOFPS style than a MMORPG style. I know many of you want that and want their characters to be digital gods who can do everything and have no need for group dynamics. But I for one will not cheer for the further errosion of the MMORPG genre. You know, that genre that used to exist and that this site was supposed to cover?
And sorry, but I find it funny (and a little vomitous) that so many people are standing in line to be ANET groupies. It is amazing how a group that was bashed (rightly so) and basically a non-factor (for good reason) has become the golden child of developers. Its like the rebirth of Reaganomics. Trickle-down development if you will.
K then , name 1 mmo that is supposed to come out in near future and has the least bit of innovation and hope to get out of the genneric bullcrap that every mmo for the past 3-4 years has been
Prime: Battle for Dominus
The Repopulation
Salem
just off the top of my head.
I can name one...Archeage.AA is actually trying to do alot when compared to other games, combining pvp and pve and building and physics. Some games do a little here and htere and usually look down right bad.Other games do a decent job in the pvp ideas/ships ect ect but have no PVE.
IMO Archeage is the first gmae that truly deserves HYPE,as it at least is trying to do so much instead of 1-2 gimmicks. You can take every game out there and name the 1-2 gimmicks each tries to pull off.......flying/character looks/rifts/invasions/voice overs/personal storyline/dynamic events ect ect ,all sound familiar?
The player models will be sort of low end,but imo it is a must if having large player battles .Besides the lag control players are covered in gear al lthe time anyhow,so high definition player models wil lonly hurt a massive game like this.
You can easily see in the first few minutes how much the game will do and almost all of it will NOT be present in GW2.
My point is not to over ride the topic, but you asked so i answered.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
Why are people all over this game? not trying to hate on the game, it will have its niche but the game play doesnt look special. The voices over quests lack real animation. The PvP looks played out. The graphics are good, but that just means you need a crazy computer for boss fights and large scale anything.
I found these two parts to be somewhat contradictory.
That's because you, like a lot of people on this website, seem incapable of differentiating between hate and mild dislike/disinterest.
If he hated it he'd have said the following:
The gameplay looks absolutely terrible. The voice-over quests are downright horrible. The PvP just sucks.
But he didn't.
He expressed a mild dislike, his opinions ranging from mostly not positive to mildly negative.
There are many more opinions to hold besides fandom or hate, you should try it some time.

Why dont you guys compare those sandboxes with another sandboxes? Theme parks and sandboxes reach to different demographics
That's kind of how I'm approaching it. GW2 is a themepark, nobody is denying that. But being a themepark doesn't mean that it's a traditional themepark. I really do believe that they have examined every aspect of MMOs and are trying to make a game with their own vision. They see the problems with quests and they feel PQs were a step in the right direction, but they're going even further with DEs. They see that quests are isolating, so they're trying to remove all barriers to socialization by making the PVE world griefless (among other ways). They want to put the RPG back into MMORPG as well so each player has a personal story with choices in game and at character creation. I can literally go on and on and on about every aspect of the game and how it evolved from and improved on what came before. The game is nothing like traditional MMOs, it's not even anything like GW1.
It doesn't even really have to be a competition. Like in the ArcheAge video that was linked. I think it's great that they're building the game with THEIR own vision. It's just a different vision. GW2 wants to build a great, innovative themepark and change all the things in themeparks they think they can do better. I think they're succeeding at that goal. The ArcheAge people want to build a great sandbox and bring mechanics from the early days of some of the lesser known MMOs to today. Maybe those goals aren't even compatible, or maybe someone will do both in the future. Who knows. It doesn't mean that one game is better than one another, just that they might appeal to different people.
I also have faith in GW2 due to the care and quality going into it. ArenaNet isn't talking about anything unless it's in the game and working. There's tons and tons of demo footage which supports what they've said. They iterate the game a ton and have been in alpha testing for years getting feedback. They've replaced at least one entire zone they didn't think was good enough. Look at footage like the Shatterer (among other footage) and realize that was what the game looked like in August 2010, yet it might still be over a year and a half from then before release.
I don't even love GW1, I just like it so I'm not some diehard ArenaNet fanboy. I just think they've got a great vision for GW2 and a great approach to making it and I'm sure it's going to be a major success.
"Gamers will no longer buy the argument that every MMO requires a subscription fee to offset server and bandwidth costs. It's not true you know it, and they know it."-Jeff Strain, co-founder of ArenaNet, 2007
Wont really know till I play it though. Guild wars really did push the bar in terms of high standards and value for money. I assume they will be doing the same with GW2.
Faith is a strange word to use. I don't feel like I'm leaving anything up to faith, unless you're the kind of person that chalks it up to faith when you see the sky darken, the wind kick up, and the temperature drop that God is about to make it rain. What I'm saying is, if you don't already simply recognize that this game is going to provide an unheard of level of entertainment for the price, you need to check the calibration on your barometer.
Charr: Outta my way. Human: What's your problem? Charr: Your thin skin.
A lot of people are excited about the game and its features. OP even mentions something about PVP, but PVP is something those that have played the game seem to be most excited about.
If you want to figure out why people are excited about GW2 hit up the GW2 website, check out youtube for videos, and other news outlets. If nothing you see there excites you then have it your way. But if you cant understand why other people are excited I kind of think you've got some sort of blinders on. As though you dont really want to acknowledge it.
Because I played GW1 and it is the pest pvp period, no one can argue that with me and change my mind... it was the best PVP. And that is why I have faith in the GW2's.
Well, it's not faith, it's what choice do I have for MMOs that will be coming out soon....
swtor - Will probably be buying, due to friends playing it, not real excited about it. I am not a big voice over/cut scene fan, the companion thing sounds more like a single rpg game, and could turn into a grind for their stuff...I want to do stuff for my guy, not my guys fake friends. The crafting is done by companions....I want to do stuff, not my npc pet...I haven't tried it, so maybe I will be wrong, but If I was spiderman, my spidey senses would be giving me a migraine when I probably hit the 'purchase' button on this one....I am open to being suprised, but I am not thrilled with what I know, with the nda up atm.
GW2- WvWvW open pvp, with objectives, sieges etc....Loved DAoC, hopefully this can give me some of that feeling. Dynamic content...ehh...Guess I have to wait and see, done WARs and Rifts...Will see if it means much more, or if it is just quest loops...Little leary of the everyone can do everything...thing. So what has me excited from what I know so far, the WvWvW...I will admit I have not studied this or swtor to a great extent, due to gw2 being far off, and I am almost stuck just getting swtor anyway.
WoD - Sandbox with some themepark stuff, atleast from what people have speculated and heard...Only vampire clans as playable races, thats a little limiting, could make it somewhat bland to me. I do like a good sandbox or hybrid though.
ArcheAge - sandbox/themepark mix...Depends on how they do it, but worthy of me looking forward to it, just due to it being different, and not so wow/riftish
EQNext - Yeah we all hate SOE, but hey, I played EQ for like 6-7-8 years, something insane, so I am interetsed. Especially if they are going retro, as some suggest. Rumor of f2p, don't like....b2p...like more, but I am a subscription fan myself.
Copernicus - I have liked their thoughts and ramblings, and I like the people they have. I am a Salvatore fan....BUT, if their RPG does not do real good, they will be probably lower on funds, and they may try to play it too safe, and deliver the same old formula that has gotten stale for many, and was stale for me at the end of EQ, let alone having to play WoW or Rift or any of the other games that walk in that mold.
TSW - Looked like they were doing some cool stuff, but it also looks like they may ruin it...Will have to wait and see.
Why are people all over this game? not trying to hate on the game, it will have its niche but the game play doesnt look special. The voices over quests lack real animation. The PvP looks played out. While I don't ride the same bus as those saying "[GW2 is]restoring MMOs to their former glory!" and all other evangelic stuff, and while I also don't ride on the same bus as those who loved GW1, you've gotta be either blind or have a completely different taste in MMO if the manifesto video didn't spur your interest. If a video isn't enough there's a consolidated fact thread about GW: http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/287180/Everything-We-Know-about-GW2.html
Doesn't sell the game by itself, of course...but it looks like a pretty good stab at the long-awaited Next Big Thing.
I'll drop my fifty (sixty?) bones on it. Worth the wager, I think. Yup.
Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.
Reading some of the replies in this thread has REALLY turned me off of GW2. The rampant fanboism seen here is sickening.
Thats sound. I mean if the majority of people are excited about a game, and say why, then I guess there's no reason to play it. People have no taste anyways. Only you do. Dont believe the hype. If people are flocking to a game because it offers innovation, change, fun, and seems interesting, then we cant have THAT!
Goodness.....I mean if we did that, we'd all be playing something pretty darn good. Too much of a good thing is bad. Yes sir. Mediocre is where its at. Yes....mediocre.
No game is perfect. You have to take the good with the bad.
I'll be playing my fair share of SW:TOR in two months, but you better believe I have criticized aspects of its gameplay which I do not like. Almost every Guild Wars 2 thread I encounter here on mmorpg.com is filled with rampant praise for the game and for Anet along with double standards where the criticisms of other upcoming MMORPGs simply don't seem to find their way to this game even though they are just as valid.
The number one concern I have about GW2 is longevity, and I've yet to hear anything from Anet or from any forum poster explaining to me how GW2 will retain players over a long period of time given how the game deemphasizes the grind, which is really what keeps people playing these games to begin with.
If anything, I usually hear people admitting that the game probably won't have the longevity of a more traditional MMO but that they'll play it anyway because that's what they did in GW1...
Yea I can understand where you are coming from. GW2 is pretty far out and the developers have talked a pretty good game. In fact they've talked a VERY good game. Will they deliver one? Time will tell.
I think what gets people excited is the video demos and things we've seen. They look great (to fans anyways). Longevity is a factor but I think there might be more of it here by far than in GW1 being that the level cap is set far higher as in a traditional mmorpg. PvP is sounding really fantastic.
So far there's just been very little to complain about. Im not a fan of the teleportation mechanic, but then again thats pretty much the same thing you are doing every time you take a flight point in WoW, just instantly instead of a long flight.
Its just a little difficult to get reasonably down on this game at the current time because I think most people like what they are hearing (not playing). You know a lot of games have hype and developers talking and there's plenty of people that DONT like what they hear even before you've played it.
I guess a lot of the hype is coming from the developers "talking a good game". They're saying things a lot of players wish mmo devs would have said years ago but havent. Their theory is darn sound anyways. What kind of game they actually end up delivering remains to be seen. But what little people have been experiencing at game shows and conventions also looks really promising.
So there's a lot of hope here. But its good to be pesemistic at times. Smart even.
So far there's just been very little to complain about. Im not a fan of the teleportation mechanic, but then again thats pretty much the same thing you are doing every time you take a flight point in WoW, just instantly instead of a long flight.
That's the thing that I think gets under peoples skin a bit. If a lot of their decisions (like no mounts, insta teleporting etc) were being shown off by someone else there would be a crap ton of complaints about it. If anyone else was presenting DE's ( public quests) as their overall major PVe feature, you'd hear a lot about how it's just going to be a huge zerg etc.. No true social aspects yada yada yada. A prime example is segregated PVP and BG's, FC/TSW is getting a crap ton of crap for that right now on it's forum.
The fact of the matter is every game gets a whole lot of flak they really don't deserve, GW2 isn't, at least to the extent everyone else is.
For every minute you are angry , you lose 60 seconds of happiness."-Emerson
Will GW2 be perfect in every sense? No. Is it everything I ever wanted in a MMO? No. Will GW2 have many features that MMOs do not have all in a single game? Yes. Will GW2 offer me more that I do want to see in a MMO than any other MMO I ever have played? Yes.
GW2 will not be perfect, but It will be a great game. A game that will have most of what I have been looking for. Have I ever said or thought this about another MMORPG? No.
