Why are people all over this game? not trying to hate on the game, it will have its niche but the game play doesnt look special. The voices over quests lack real animation. The PvP looks played out. The graphics are good, but that just means you need a crazy computer for boss fights and large scale anything.

first time Ive seen a MMO that, to me, looks fun to play without sitting with the controls myself. but really read the other posts on this forum we have had this topic alot :P well would think its been spoken to death already this game
It's not a WoW clone.

There are many reasons, but a lot of are just simple gameplay mechanics, the lore and artstyle for me.
Because I played it enough at PAX 2010 and 2011 that I could tell it will offer more than past titles and thoroughly enjoyed it.
For one reason only.
ANET seem to be reading my mind and making an mmorpg out of my thoughts.
If that's not good enough, I don't know what is.

ArenaNet devs are the only devs so far that understand what a MMO should be like, what needs to change, they understand perfectly what is wrong with MMO's today and why, and how to change it, and they are doing what is necessary to fix it, no matter how risky it is. Moreover they dont throw promises at us in vain, like every single other MMO dev out there, they take their time and make sure that every thing we see works by the time we see it. All you need to do is listen to them, and get infected by the genuine enthusiasm and inspiration. They are indeed reading my mind, that's why I back them up.
Not to mention GW2 gameplay videos sweep the floor even with the PRERENDERED cinematics of SWTOR.. that is the level of genuine artistry and skill this game contains, even at this early stage.

Should be obvious.... my opinion apparently is drasticly different than yours.
This game was nowhere near on my radar because I did not like GW1. I fell for their manifesto (click this) hook, line and sinker. Since then I've become a fan of ArenaNet.
We're all rooting for them to pull this off.
I have faith in ANET
when it launched, Guild Wars was my favorite online game
(and this was from someone whos played diablos / starcraft/ Everquest / DAOC / wow / etc)
I would buy any game by ANET
EQ2 fan sites
This is exactly how I feel.
GW2 marks the first time ever that I have not been bored to death watching real, uncut gameplay from an MMO.
And I'm not talking 5 or 10 minute videos. I've watched three 40+ minute videos in their entirety and still wanted more when they were over.
By contrast I can't even sit through the first 2 minutes of an SWTOR gameplay video.

For me, a big part of it is ArenaNet's design with cooperative gameplay in mind. I started playing MMOs when FFXI came out, and while every game has their jerks, the bulk of the poeple that I encountered were fun and I had some good times while grouped with them because we all shared the same goals. We were all pretty much working towards the same objectives as a group and you helped others because you knew that in time you would need help too.
I am looking forward to getting back into a game that rewards people for coming together to overcome adversity. Where people will band together to fight back a horde of undead, before they lose access to a town (and its resources), rather than just kill their 'ten rats' before they run off to to the next hub. I am looking forward to not being penalized for helping or grouping with others. I am hoping that ArenaNet can bring the multiplayer factor back to the GW2 community. We have enough Massively Solo-player Online Games as it is.
And I am also looking forward to not having to fork over $15 a month to get this.
dunno for me GW failed to hook me as besides guild vs guild pvp there was nothing to keep you playing, it was like playing starcraft just with avatars trying to look like an mmo (for me). on top the combat system tho super balanced was boring as hell.
this are 2 key elements they basicaly failed totally with GW1 at least for me. it's to be seen if they suddently will turn 180° and can make what they couldn't back then. i totally think ANET are super talented and a very decent dev team but i for one am not sold to that they know what it takes to make a good mmo as of now.
basically i do not understand all the trust as well
I don't have so much faith in this game personally if your meaning I think its going to be a holy graal. I'll bet it will be fun and popular, but I'm not letting myself get falsely hyped up for something that I might get bored of. That being said, considering it is just a one time cost (unless they changed it) its probably something I would buy. It won't have a free trial most likely, or if it does it will probably come out a while after release. Either way its sure to give some fun even if its only decent to me, being able to pick it up and enjoy simply the original game.
Hopefully its good at least... GuildWars 1 I bought for the same reason and I barely played it. It seems like it will be moderately fun to me so i'm expecting it to be able to provide me with the occasional entertainment for my ADD and possibly a solid game I might play a bit more often then I expected.
The whole post is wrong. Sit down boy, you got an F. Next time make your homework
They are not. Its just the usual marketing hype.
not-a-wow-clone originality, and it looks polished, not some clunky amateurish niche MMO. that's enough for me to look forward to trying it - but its been a long time since I've had faith in any game, no matter how good it looks before its out. Been burned too many times.
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.
ArenaNet.
I think that 90% of sceptics don't really know them. Yes, GW isn't a perfect game, but the way it was delivered and supported is IMO really amazing. They showed they actually DO give a damn about their players, without milking their wallets. And this is a rare feature these days. Mix in a ton of talent and you got yourself one amazing dev team.
Eat me!
During the pink day in Lion's Arch yesterday (in guild wars 1) several devs came to play with us. It was amazing what crazy stuff we did all around the town. Thousands of players forming a heart around devs, forming a word hope (for breast cancer research), chasing them around forming a huge snake, many of us transformed into golems and formed a huge circle around players. It was awesome. We had a really nice chat with them. They said they are working day and night to prepare this game for beta, which I can feel from the way they said it is very very close.
btw we raised over $10 000 for breast cancer society.

Here we go again. /facepalm
Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.
When my first true love came to pass (DAOC) i played ever title out there hoping for a NEW love of a game. I dreamed like many that Warhammer was going to be DAOC 2.0. What a dissappointment. I played the Original series of Guild Wars titles and never found the same game energy namely because it was an all instanced game. I also thought the combat mechanics were inferior. Having those pick your own AI friends was boring as well.
I've tried over 90% of all the MMORPGs released in the past 10 years and I don't even think Guild Wars 2 can bring back the feel for us who played first generation PVP based MMORPGS. Games used to be made up by mature adults as players and now thanks to WoW and alot of irresponsible parents to pay for there kids game subscriptions( electronic babysitters) its dominated by alot of fat kids who never leave the house, exercise or what not lol.
With that being said i can only hope that GW2 rolls into a more non instanced open world MMORPG where PVP is its primary focus. If it has battlegrounds or anything thats instance and team based like WoW i won't waste a dime. I never liked the PVP instances in the original Guild Wars. Lets hope this game is the next generation of PVP based MMO's. I am not going to get too excited about it until after its released and some stellar reviews start popping up.
@OP The game looks a little different from the standard WoW type of mechanics. The genre is so innovatively stagnant thats all it takes.
GW1 wasn't an MMO, but Anet weren't trying to create an MMO when they made it and they weren't promoting it as being an MMO either. GW2 however is an actual MMO and is very different from GW1. They have already shown and let people play the game multiple times so what they're saying aren't just empty words.
Everything we currently know about PvP: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Player_versus_Player
There is no actual open world PvP however WvWvW takes place in a big persistent area (although seperate from PvE) where 3 servers fight in 2 week long battles with all sorts of different goals such as taking over mines and protecting caravans, guilds can also take over, hold and upgrade keeps there. It's also going to be massive (as in hundreds of players).
Espescially the gameplay of this game is what it makes very special... its a good ballance between traditional MMO and FPS gaming, much more active then traditional MMO's
The world itselves is totally Open and very Dynamic as in changing all the time around you...
Classes are very tweakable, and choosing other traits and skills will make the character feel and play totally different..
The active combat system is espescially suited for PvP, much much more active with much much more movement in both PvP instances as Open world PvP areas.
Anyway, this game brings alot of those features to the game i have been wishing for for an awesome long time..
- DAoC like Pvp (RvR)
- More action orientated, where player skill > Item stats
- challenging PvE
- Great background stories that make you heroe feel very special in every sense of the world..
- Artsyle is a good mix between reallity and cartoony
- Combat is much more active then other MMO;s
- Character tweaking instead of Armor tweaking... You can have several builds accessible for your character ... and switch them on the fly out of combat
-Minigames for community building.. (and a lot of them)
and much much more.....
Do i have no worries? Sure i do, I really hope that the trinity less combat system workd out as well in PvE as it will in PvP... No more tanker/healer will be quite a step..... if it works out fine, its the best thing happened to MMO's... Just need some handson experience to see how it feels.
The game plays nothing like the oprriginal GW or even WoW..... It plays like GW2, the most orriginal MMO we have seen in years...And thats its huge selling point for those that have grown a little tired of the traditional MMO. (not that there is anything wrong with people that still love them)
Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)
many cool features offered by gw2.
for comparison just like someone said in this thread - i cant even watch through swtor videos.
im huge fan of star wars, but that gameplay is just... pfft.
hacking away 500 times with lightsaber at human target and only taking 1/3 hp that way really goes against my logic how star wars game should be. then again i still feel nostalgia for jedi knight: jedi academy which i played for 4 years multiplayer, one mistake and you were dead. compared to those 500 swings at swtor? i mean what the heck?
guild wars 1 tho... now that was (and still is) completely different from any mmo that ive played. some actual teamplay involved rather than dps, stunbot and healbot. if gw2 is gonna have such drastic spells like gw1 had... im completely sold.
mesmer still is one of the most unique classes that ive played.
Please stop comparing GW2 with GW. The game has a totally new combat mechanisme... The only thing the same is the Lore and background stories of Tyria.
I feel exactly this way....
This is the only thing i keep hearing from all those people with hands on experience.... cant be a bad sign, can it?
Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)
Don't worry about drakwon hes one of the people thinking the overhyped game which shall not be named will take the #1 spot, ya know hype buyers.
Personally I've lost interest in GW 2 for many reasons and their focus on targeting the FPS crowd but applaud Arenanet for trying to be different and finally doing away with stupid handholding quests. I think GW 2 will do fine but a lot will depend on what they are offering in the $hop and how they are planning to keep nonaltoholics busy with one character.
We need a MMORPG Cataclysm asap, finish the dark age of MMORPGS now!
