If the Indiana Jones references weren't a jump the shark moment in Cataclysm, Panderans and Pokemon mini-games certainly were.

According to the whiners, WoW has jumped the shark countless times. Before it even launched people thought gnomes as a playable race was stupid and childish. BC it was the retconned space goats. WotLK we had non stop complaining about how overpowered emo knights were. Cataclysm it was OMG the game has been dumbed down and they're just handing out free epics! Now it's people who apparently take issue with pandas. But are okay with cows and dogs as playable races.

So keep jumping that shark, Blizzard. I predict they will jump it all the way to record subscription numbers with the launch of MoP.

I'm sure it will.  They are obviously selling out to their biggest demographic, the Asian market.  As long as the Chinese are ok with playing a panda, they will have huge jumps in that area.  North America... that could be a different story, unless you count the pre-teens that will be begging Mom and Dad to play now.

Pre-teens beg to play call of duty and other "cool" games. Just listen for 30 seconds on x-box live for proof.

Adults play what's fun, so as long as the game is fun, it'll sell like crazy.

Co-workers opinions, MMO-champion polls...whatever. Check the likes and dislikes on the trailer. Eek.

Not that the Youtube community is very nice. And I'm still convinced most of the people clicking 'Dislike' will eventually go out and buy it.

My wife and I will be getting it, but we won't go the midnight release like we did on the other expansions. We're just not as excited as the others. Interested, yeah. Just not all excited.

I just don't think Blizzard has all their resources on this expansion for WOW. I think the more veteran developers are working on the new MMO and they left the amateurs to run the expansion portion of WoW.

The big deal I don't think its on the new race for many people(even though I think its dumb) but the fact on how the expansion is implemented. I will list reasons below from what I heard on the preview on why the new expansion is bad.

    1. The Pandarens as they call them will be able to be on horde or Alliance. Horrible decision IMO so how are bgs gonna play out when you see Pandarens running around everywhere or in world pvp. Disaster right there!

    2. No main Villian this time around they said. Well that's great lets add an expansion for the sake of adding a new race and more daily quest grinds and repeating bgs. They should have stuck with having a main villian like every other expansion. Disaster again right here.

    3. If you thought the above was bad then be prepared for #3. That's right you guessed it, a whole rework of the talent point system. Converting the talent point system from WOTLK to Cataclysm was bad enough. Now they are chopping it down even more and words can't IMO describe how bad this is.

P.S. I'm not trying to convince anyone whether to buy it or not , I'm just stating my opinion on why I think this expansion will fail. If your are still buying it , then have fun all the power to you, you will need it thats for sure.

I would give you a guest pass to SWOTR, but then I wouldn't be able to find a way to live with myself afterwards....

I much would have had a selectable Pandaren race instead of the Goblins. Seriously. Alliance got the Worgan. We got...............Goblins. Uglier than sin and just as annoying as Gnomes. We could have seen fist weapons more implemented in the game thus adding more equipment content. Oh well. Maybe one day. But by then it may be too late when games like GW2 and TERA come out. WoW with as much as it has set a group of standards in the MMORPG industry, is outdated. I would love to see a second release with lets say for starters, a major graphical overhaul with a more in depth character creation.

Getting too old for this $&17!

If you want my honest opinion? they are just milking what's left of the subscirber base. They are putting more resources and time into the new MMO they are developing. They just left a few coders and stuff to do expansions for WoW and took the best  developersto work on the new mmo.

GW2 was selling char plushies and have their own cute race in it. And guess who is buying those plushies? grown ups. I am sick of this generalisation and two face talks by GW2 fans, tera fans (popori look like teddy bears) and other players on how Panda are too cute and childish when most of them would be the first to play above races and buy that plushies for their room.

It is all ok as long as it is your favorite game.

I thought the Popori were the five year old girls, not the teddy bears. I could be wrong.

My fiance doesn't really keep up with blizzcon, but she has to be the most devoted blizzard follower. She loves it, took almost 4 months off out of her 5 years subscribed to focus on college, and she never unsubscribed once because she believed in what they were doing and how well they represent the ideals of the players creating the best game imaginable. I informed her Friday pandaren where coming to wow as the next expansions race. She wishes I was joking. I have never seen her so pissed, and now she gets sick even looking at the wow logo on her desktop. To her, this isn't just a possible fault of expansion, its trust and millions and millions of dollars from all the players being abused to create content that many will be unable to immerse themselves in, content that completely downplays any mood that the more and more "epic" connotation behind each expansion, and the destroying of 7 years of balancing, tweaking, and definition as the death of our talent system is played like. it should be the best news of our lives.

Pandas are vicious creatures too. One bit me head clean off one time.

    ... I got better.

I will never understand this angle.  From a storytelling standpoint having a major villain threaten every time one falls is just lazy. , and also gives little room for the conflict to develop between horde and alliance.  Now the shit gets to hit the fan.

And Im also betting we see an Old God before the expansion si through having a major effect on the events.  What you dont know is coming is often far more interesting than what you do know is coming.

Ummm  ...were we to think when a developer is asked they would respond with yes our content is a joke please don't play it?

He SHOULD have been asked that if this was such a serious race in the LORE chain why 9 years to get it into game? That is when it first appeared in any context inside of  BlizzardWarcraft 3.So they needed 8/9 years to hum and haw over something serious?

I think most are no dummies, their lead artist loves them, and the timing release right after the movies seems far more than coincidence.

I mean lets be serious here a monk class to boot, could it be anymore obvious?

Then the Panderin supposedly left the friendship of the night elves because they didn't like them weilding magic, yet one of the Panderin tribes used earth magic, kinda contradictary LORE there in Wow.They were docile but magically became superior swordsman class, hhmm that is a quick step in the LORE history.I tohught i read soemwhere they overtook an insect race to rule their land, but Warcraft Lore says otherwise talkin gabout Tauren race and one other,so who knows where their Lore goes half the time.

Then to boot the panderin race has been inscribed in Wow lore as more a Samarai/skilled sowrdsman definitely not a Shaolin Monk,so again this is copying the movie flat out.Weather or not Dreamworks was inspired by Warcraft i don't know ,their inception of the Kung fu panda came about the same time or right after  Blizzard's Panderin,so who really knows. The Dream works guy apparently went to China to study their culture and background on the Panda,so if is true ,he definitely took it more seriously than Blizzard did,who waited 8/9 years to take it serious.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

Kung Fu Panda or not, having a fat bear dressed in a dress/robe/whatever and doing karate moves is just plain childish and silly. I can't see many self-respecting men (or women?) play such a character. So for sure this is targetted at children.

I mean just the fact that they hade to publicly come out and say that this is not a joke just proves how silly the whole thing is, or being received at least.

  • alakramalakram Member UncommonPosts: 2,301

Everybody is making fun of him, he is now a Sad Panda... er... I mean, Angry Panda.

When you need to make an statement about your next race / expansion not being a joke you need to really stop yourself and check what you are launching as your next expansion. Not that I care too much about WoW and it's lore, just is fun to post about all this Panda thing.

I've met a Pandaren while doing the WC3 campaign. I've read up on Pandaren heroic deeds and involvement in the war, and I know all these things before there was even a movie called "Kungfu Panda". I've also read numerous times of fans hoping for a playable Pandaren race on blogs, Blizzcon write-ups, and WoW forums. For me this isn't surprising at all.

  • redhamaredhama Member Posts: 4

To be honest, I am quite excited about Pandaren race. Since World of Warcraft was released, I have been waiting for this day. Warcraft 3: FT got me pumped because if I remember correctly you could get "Mercenary" hero from neutral vendor, who was Pandaren Brewmaster? It might feel lil' bit kiddy playing with Panda character but who doesn't want to be old sake drinking panda who is master of drunken fist?

It seems this expansion doesn't have that cliché big villain thing.  I am glad they left that out. Villains like Illidian and Arthas was so cool and epic to kill but Deathwing... he is not just interesting imo. I hope they would revive Open PvP and heat the flames of war between Horde and Alliance. Make World of Warcraft live by its name once again!

Of course I didn't think it was a joke. We Fly Spitfires already predicted this in August of this year: http://blog.weflyspitfires.com/2011/08/28/mists-of-pandaria-predictions/

Within the WoW concept it all makes perfect sense.

ah christ you are playing World of Warcraft.... how could you SERIOUSLY start the "not grown up enough" or the "too choldish" line on this game?

get it or not, who cares

Lets see if I get this right...

    1. Pandaren as an april fools joke - funny give you that

    2. center of the next expansion including a Chinpokomon System

    3. Lead writers and designers!!! have to speak up about how "serious" this race is gonna be. For the first time in history they're also asking for patience and to please come on board joining the ride.

Am I the only one thinking Blizzard has lost it? I understand why they are making it avaiable to both races 1 race = less development time = cheaper...

Not that I care that much anymore but I really thinkin Blizzard is going downhill way to fast. I mean these guys had the burning legion, emerald dream to do next and all they can think off are some drunken kungfu pandas?

I knew, things were about to go downhilla fter Kaplan left but even I'm surprised how quick they've lost it. Also Metzen und Didier have to question themselves if you have to speak to the public about the seriousness of an expansion you're doing something wrong, period.

We need a MMORPG Cataclysm asap, finish the dark age of MMORPGS now!

"Everything you're bitching about is wrong. People don't have the time to invest in corpse runs, impossible zones, or long winded quests. Sometimes, they just want to pop on and play."
"Then maybe MMORPGs aren't for you."

    Cow-people (tauren)? Fine.=Minotaurs

Boar-people (razor-fens)? No problem.=Gullin Asguardian boar god from norse myth also boars feature heavily in celtic myth

Snake-people (naga)? Nifty.=The Gorgans in greek myth as well as plenty of equivelents in other mythologys from all over the world

Demon-goat people (satyr)? Neat.  =Satyrs actually don't need and explanation as they already exist in established mythology and are not a creation by Blizzard

Deer-people (centaur)? Peachy.=Cernunnos  the horned God from celtic mythology

    Bird-people (rocs)? Cool.= the harpies

    Wolf-people (worgen)? Super-cool. =werewolves

Space-goat people (draenei)? Sexy.= the god Pan

Panda people (pandaren)? OMGWTF IZ THIS NONSENSE BLIZZ!? No real equivelent in western myth and nothing I can find in asian myth either .

I don't understand this at all. Why are people flipping their s**t because of this?

I've done my best to answer the questions for you .

Basically because they don't really fit and were originally concieved as a joke race by Blizzard . Also the fact they are a monk class which echos the shaolin monks and at a time with Kung Fu Panda is fresh in people minds so it will appear to the average(not the ardent WoW fan who will think anything Blizzard do is without fault) mmo player they are aimed at children more than adults (I liked Kung Fu Panda myself but its was fine in context as a light hearted childrens movie) or a cynical ploy by Blizzard to appeal more to the Asian market . Both of these show which direction WoW is likly to go in future . Everything else you've mentioned by can be found in celtic, greek and norse myth all of which are standard to the type of fantasy WoW is based on where as Pandas are not .

Thats a huge turn off to many potential and current players .

I do not think so. Love, literally idea, and barely can wait to play panda monk. They fit into wow well as elves, orcs, worgens, .... We will see if this will attract more pests... ops, small children :-) into wow. Hope not, 50 here with grown kids. But I'm still more disturbed by adult pcychos or hormone dopped teens in wow then kids.

Here we go again. You can see self-respecting men/women playing all the silly immature things in the game now, but you can't see them continuing on playing more silly immature stuff?

The game has always been targetted at youth (12+ rating is your first clue). However, you don't have to be young or immature to enjoy it. Your "fun" is your "fun" afterall.

A question for the Kung-Fu panda bandwagoneers: If Kung-Fu panda did not exist, in what way would you deride the panda in the xpac?

I agree that it is a bit strange maybe even sad that Blizz had to speak out about the next expansion and how it isn't a joke. However I put that blame on some of the players, because right away they aren't hit with an OMG BIG BADDY! They are confused and don't know what to do. And it must be explained to them to chill da eff out and let it unfold.

Also it doesn't seem like you truly understand why they added Pandaren to both races. Less dev time? No way! Imagine if they added this race to just horde, or just alliance for a minute... We would be hearing at least 50x the hating we do now. Saying how it isn't fair that X faction has the Pandarens.

This has easily been one of the most requested races, and the reason it was an april fools joke is because it was so popular I could imagine. idk I just feel that only time will tell the success of this next expansion, but from what I have seen/read/talked about it is shaping up to be pretty successful

To me the very fact it was an Aprils fools joke at one point and the fact Blizzard have had to come out and say its not a joke speaks volumes . As for the numbers of people requesting this as a class well theres always a very vocal minority in these games and its not always a good idea to give them what they want .

I wonder out of 12 million people how many actually emailed Blizzard asking for this . I wouldn't think it even approaches 100 thousand .The average player doesn't bother with that sort of thing . Its a bit like complaints to the BBC  in this country the vast majority will watch a program and not give it a second thought but theres a few that will write complaining about it or praising it .

For Blizzard to make this annoucement they must be quite concerned at the backlash they are getting. Many fans of the game will have you think there is not much decent over this idea but I'm still playing WoW and I would say the community is pretty much split over the proposed expansion pack . How many will think its time to leave is anyones guess at the end of the day but a lot of players have kept playing thinking the grass will be greener in the future . This expansion seams to be incredibly lackluster .

Some people would pretty much swallow anything Blizzard put out that they would even accept robot chickens as a playable race which shot metal eggs out of their hind quarters and would be in these forums argueing how brilliant they were and how they fitted into the lore much in the same way they are arguing for the Panderians now .

For me and many more though for things to change in Warcraft that it will take a change at the top and for the current people in charge of Blizzard to be sacked .
