While not an MMO, Bethesda's Skyrim has taken the gaming world by storm with today's release. MMORPG.com Managing Editor Bill Murphy has been up since the wee hours of the morning putting his new game through its paces. See what Bill thinks of Skyrim. Played Skyrim? What did you think? Let us know in the comments!
The story, without spoiling too much, begins like every other TES. You’re a prisoner of some sort, being dragged to your death when something incredible happens that sets you on a path towards legendary hero status. In this case you’re making your way to your birth-home of Skyrim, get taken prisoner as a traitor to the Imperials who are in the middle of a civil war, and are about to be beheaded when a massive dragon appears and starts flaming the crap out of everything. Turns out dragons are kind of mean.

Heading to the store to buy this.. can't wait! This should tide me over until SWTOR, Diablo 3, and GW2 come out.
I don't know if I'd have enough time to play this before the others come out. It has a ridiculous amount of material. Plus I want to upgrade my system before I do anything else. Sheesh.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
So far im also in camp of saying its awesome and also did not seen any bugs im playing 7 hours now and game looks very good. But some minor things like little handcursor gone now and lvl up im not realy pleased with i loved the sleep way of lvl up it was part of Elder Scroll gameplay but gone now.
Ive been in few dungeons now and thats improved alot compare to Oblivion there all different and looking great.
And i dont like the Map at all.
But movement combat like with 2 hands magic i love alot. Im playing on hardest lvl but its not that hard so far that worrys me also.
But 7 hours is just way to short to judge game.
Still so far im enjoying game.

I think I would lose all respect for Bethesda if they put a panda in this game as a intelligent race. I wouldn't mind much if it was just a roaming creature, but panda I could play / talk to would be such an immersion breaker. But I do want a talking mudcrab that has tons of money. I feel like that would be a good feature to have.
I was actually up till 3:30am, shamefully.
So far, it has been the best of the bunch IMO. It brings back some of the old and a lot of new. I can now say I have a game worth playing till TOR comes out.
How many people long for that "past, simpler, and better world," I wonder, without ever recognizing the truth that perhaps it was they who were simpler and better, and not the world about them?

Your post is about as close to torture as you can get while keeping it legal. I'm in the SWTOR beta this weekend so I've been holding off on getting Skyrim till after, but it gets harder and harder by the hour to keep myself from running down to gamestop.
skyrim MMO please. Best single player game of the last few years!
Doubtful it would happen. Bethseda have said a few times that they won't even do multiplayer for TES as they want to make the best single player games of the series as they can. I think i'd prefer them to stick the single player rather than risk messing up with an MMO, they make some of the best single players around.
Got it off steam and played for an hour last night and few hours this morning. So far it's pretty awesome but I'm not really crazy with how inventory is handled at all. I also like a hotbar.
Also there is a graphical glitch? that makes the end part of my characters nose kind of pixelated. I tried adjusting AA to no apparent effect. It was also present before and after upgrading my drivers.
Performance is good. Graphics also are good, but the textures could be a little better in some places. I would love more graphical options to play around with in game.
I love that I can switch from first person to third person.
Where's the manual!? I like a manual so I don't have to google every question I have. Would have been nice if they had included a pdf file, or maybe they have. It wasn't in the usual Steam drop down menu when I rightclicked the game.
Definitely happy with my purchase.
Its good.
I just picked up my Collector's Edition this morning from Gamestop the damn box was bigger than a PS3 console box, the statue was super sweet and is now sitting in my corner of other statues from other collector's edition games and soon Darth Malgus will be joining them as well, the artwork book is extremely nice and the super giant map is super as well just can't wait till I have time to play the game :P
If you played Oblivion, this is more of the same. So you already know all the great things.
And unfortunately most of the bad things are the same.
I still find the UI very , very clunky. The hotkeys and swapping with the Q button is just ridiculous for the PC.
The level Up UI is also atrocious. Never have I wished more for a simple, Tree based talent system before! You press Up to progress to the next level, and then maybe press left, or maybe press up (W) again to get to the branch of the tree that you want. Or hey....sometimes you press back (D). These things are annoying me no end, but I will muddle through as of course there is nothing like SKyrim around.
It's just fantastic!
Purchased on Steam.
Absolutely amazing game, has surpassed all of my expecations so far.
I'm going to have a hard time tearing myself away from it to play SWTOR later this evening, I woke up early this morning just so I could play as much as possible (wife is out of town, perfect timing) on my day off lol.
Is combat playable in third person?
I'm glad I'm not the only one having this problem!!!
Finally got into a weekend beta test, and go figure it's sitting right on top of what was supposed to be a marathon Skyrim weekend.
Something is wrong when you change the settings. Initially I was getting 60 fps. I started playing around with different settings, low, medium, high, ultra, etc. Tried with AA on/off, Anistropic on/off etc.
Every time I'd change the settings it seemed like I was getting lower fps. Now on high where I was getting 60 fps I am getting 7.
I7 2.8
8gb ram
win 7 64
ati 5800 series with 1gb vram.
Not sur what the deal is....
The controls annoy the hell out of me. Console port BS On the flip side it's Bethesda's TES . I would play with 2 bricks strapped to my hands smashing my keyboard if I had to
Game rocks, hands down best 60 bucks I have spent this year on a game.
PS. UI mods (I would bet) are going to be some of the first mods to hit this weekend. Definitely looking forward to that lol.
I got off work at 4am and went straight to Wal-Mart to get a copy. I played it until 6:15am. A lot has changed in the mechanics, so I'm still figuring it out. I can't get into the Dual Wielding thing though, because the camera is flying all over the place when I'm fighting with two weapons and my stamina depleats at around 3 hits. I also can't figure out how to block with two weapons equiped. It says to hold the L1 button, but all that does is Power Attack with my left hand.
Also, the author should post a spoiler warning. Telling how things go down the first 30 min of the game ruins the experience. I"m glad I already played through that. I was surprised not knowing anything going in and getting to experience it all. If I'd of read this first, I'd of known what was coming and wouldn't have been so pleased and surprised at the same time.
I would say PC hands down due to the modding that will come in the next few years. I have no idea how modding is for the PS3, but I personally know I don't have enough space on my PS3 hard drive to even put them on.
Responding to the above poster about the leveling up. Yeah, it's a bit non intuitive. I only just realized I can click on the "star" under the perk name in order to buy it. It's a bit clumsy. So, overall this game is incredible but the UI team needs to be fired, lol.
I prefer the PS3, because I don't have to worry about any non-combatibilities, plus it still looks good on there. Also, my computer is 4 years old now, I think, and I wanted to play this now. Oh, and my 32 inch TV provides a better view than my 22 inch computer screen.
Yes, it is verry much so playable in 3rd person. At least melee and Magic. I havent tried bow yet.
So uh, I said I was going to hold off on buying this because I didnt want anything like oblivion. Then the EU players where complaining about the UI clunkyness for PC and I was sure I wouldnt buy it. Then I went to a buddies house thismorning when he called and woke me up telling me I HAD to come over and check it out. He knew I didnt plan on picking it up at least for a long while.
Needless to say after I got back home I got it on steam. It has some aspects of oblivion but it feels about 80% diffrent to me in the first hour or so I played at his place. The UI is far form clunky. Alittle diffrent but its not NEARLY as bad as some are making it out to be. Q to bring up your favorites that you mark from your inventory. Your favorites can be anything. Not having the hotkeys is alittle anoying but if you play WASD format its accessable enough. If you dont like messing with your mouse to select things (which admittedly could be improved) the arrow keys work just find.
TLDR on the UI: Its not nearly as bad as people are saying. Not even CLOSE to FF.
But yea. I was steadfast in not buying it. After playing it for an hr at a buddies house I bougt it. Its just that damn good. By the time I put 60+ hrs in by monday I'll know if I put it on Morrowind level which was by far my favorite of the series to this point.
My PC on Ultra gets FPS of around 30-50 on 1920x1080 which is good enough :-). I have 580Ms in SLI with a Core i9 and a Solid State Drive. Later Im going to pick up an xbox controller, as I do feel like the interface would be easier with that, though until I try I don't have an opinion. Im going to hook it up to a 70" Sharp/Pioneer Elite. I haven't played much, but the graphics are awesome IMO. Also, everything just feels smarter, be it the NPCs, or the way the world flows. Even though the 3rd person is better and I actually prefer 3rd person games, this game is an exception. I just feel like it was made for 1st person. MMOs are better for 3rd person. I think even without the xbox controller, remapping the keys would make the game just as playable as in Oblivion which I had no issues control wise with the PC. There is no way in hell Im going to sacrafice ultra settings on a console or not dive into the mod community in a couple of months. I still have to finish Oblivion and I just got another invite to SWTOR, so WHERE IS THE FREE TIME DAMIT!!!! lol
There Is Always Hope!
