I have a question for everyone here, I got into the weekend beta but I can't bring myself to play it. Not because I think it will suck but because I'm more of a RPG fan then a MMORPG, story means more to me then most things when it comes to gamming. I would hate to spoil any of the story in the game in a weekend beta. My question is from a RPG fans view is this game worth a look at? From what I've read it would seem like you could play this like any other RPG and for me I would play SWTOR as a RPG more so then a MMO and so I'm worrending if SWTOR really has the value of lets say KOTR/DA:O/BG or any other RPG in that range. I played Shadowbane for 6 years so It's not really a carebear thing, it's just when it comes to RPGs or MMOs I rather play a RPG.
The stories are great. Think of this as KOTOR 3,4,5,6 + with multiplayer.
Fulltime beta tester here and I will tell you SWTOR is a sub-par single player RPG. The story is completely static, your decisions have no impact on the out come of the story.
If story is your main reason to play you might not want to waste your time on SWTOR.
Ah that part makes me 2nd guess SWTOR. Thanks for the heads up.
Too bad it's entirely incorrect.
Explain please if you will, I'm trying to get an open mind about this.
I just feel like the story element that Bioware brings (the voice acting, the character development, and flash point storys ect) gets lost in the mundane nature of the mmo part of the game. The time it takes between areas, the amount of mobs you have to fight to get to an actual objective ect seem to derail the rpg experience.
What I feel ended up happening with the normal quest line is that theres points A and B, A being where you got the start of a quest (with cool diologue) and B being where you do the objective (sometimes with cool diologue) But the space in between A and B isnt very interesting, in fact its fairly boring and for me it takes away from the experience having to treck so far and through so many enemies jsut to get to point B.
Flashpoints are a good example of how these things are done well, but I feel like the rest of the game is practically a story grind to get to those cool moments. But that might jsut be me.

I wouldnt buy it ONLY for the story, propably, but from a buying it as a mmorpg perspective it has the best story telling ever in an online game like this, I dont know if any of my choises affects anything, but it sure did make the questing a lot more fun for me, and I dont really care if my choises affect the big picture, I still felt like doing hard and meaningful choises often, if only for the reaction of my companions or other characters, so it worked from immersion point of view for me, and I think that's most important in an RPG, and totally new experience to me in a mmorpg. But yeah, propably not the best choise for singleplayer, if you like SW and Bioware style RPG's and are not broke, give it a go though.

well....let me see if I can do this without spoliers.
You will encounter choices in teh story that can open up areas and quests that you would not otherwise have access to.
You will likely be faced with the choice to kill someone, or let them live. They may seek revenge on you later, or come to your aid. They may even become your companion.
You will get e-mails, and credits / gifts sent to you from the people you help or work for.
And finally, most often the consequences of your decisions will not be immediately evident.
Bioware have stated multiple times that they want your choices and their effects to be significant. I've played through some of the stories multiple times in my few months of testing, and have had all kinds of different outcomes.

Not really. I made all Dark Side choices and my friend made allLight Side choices. Where did we both end up? Coruscant, with the exact same quests at level 10.
We did Escelles (or however you spell it) at 15 with our two companions and chose to throw the engineers out of the bay. The second time we allowed them to live. What was different? Nothing major and once the flashpoint was over it was like we never did it, it never happened.
The thing that really bothers me is frame rate clipping. Objects that are a certain distance away lose half of their frames to allow slower computers to keep up. It made the animations look awful from afar. Reminded me of DAoC or WAR.
As far as exploration, I found it to be pretty guided. I was expecting more open areas, but atleast up until 18 I felt very guided and controlled.
I play a Jedi Sage. I found them extremely OP in PVP. With decent damage and shields and healing, cyclone, and stuns nobody can take me 1v1 in any of the Warzones. I can defend points almost indefinitely versus two players until the rest of the team shows up. The sounds in Huttball are all f!cked up, it's really annoying.
All in all I was pretty on the fence about the game, but somewhat positive about it. After playing it and realizing I was forcing myself to play it after a while, I just can't log in anymore. It's too familiar, nothing new, in space. :

I'm sorry, but your low level experiences in the tutorial and first instance are not going to change what I have experienced through several builds of testing and multiple characters in the lvl 40 range.
And....sounds like you either need to turn your settings up, or get better hardware....I have none of those distant LOD issues you speak of.
As for your PVP experiences....I don't do mini-games...I stick to world PVP. But I've never really had an issue killing any of the republic scum that I've come across....except for this one trooper....but that's another story entirely.
Sorry you don't care for the game. Have fun in whatever you decide to play instead.

Benthon's examples are more true than Wharg0ul's.
I mean if you can put an escapist's mind to it all.. Yeah it can seem like you're mattering to the story.
But if you look at chat at all / walk around areas you've been to / any immersion into that atmosphere can be sucked away. Unless you just HAVE the mind to be able to ignore all the sameness in this game.
I can imagine the end game being even worse.
I used to play MMOs like you, but then I took an arrow to the knee.
Thanks for the small debate everyone, this will at least help me keep an open mind about the game. I do like MMOs so that at least a 2nd thing to look forward to if the RPG parts don't fall in for me, along with being a Star Wars fan. I guess like most MMOs or anyother game the best way to go about this is just wait and see. Thanks again.

I would personally like to think that someone who has experienced most of what the game has to offer would have a bit more information than someone who barely made it past the starter planet.
But if you prefer to plug your ears and scream "LALALALALALALA!!" so you don't have to hear the truth, I won't try to stop you.

The best example I can give you from my limited time playing the beta for 2 weekends must've been when I was playing a sith warrior, going after some high in command republic trooper *******part of the story line so watchout here come some spoilers********. Prior to the confrontation with him, I had finished a quest where there was a group of republic soldiers and I chose to spare all of their lives under the condition they would answer my call. I didn't think much of it until I got to the actual confrontation with the commander later on in the game, he had brought many of his own soldiers to out number me but I had the dialog option of calling in the soldiers whom I had spared missions earlier. They came in and helped me in the battle. I know its a little thing, but its those changes to future quests that make me interested in my choices rather than the same old tired quest giver formula.

Definitely cool, but it doesn't really impress me.
Why?
Because SPRPGs have had this concept since like the 90's. Branching storylines are not new, and SWTOR implements them in the EXACT same way that SPRPGs implement them.
If there was some "revolutionary" way that they implemented branching that really affected the MMORPG world, then I would be impressed...but there isn't. You have your own personal storyline that you are on, and every other player has theirs. Your decisions affect only you.
And that's the crux of why I'm not impressed with SWTOR. The game is just KOTOR smashed together with WoW. It's basically a hodgepodge of SPRPG and MMORPG elements that aren't any better because of each other.
That said, it is still good at what it does, and I think many folks will really enjoy it (I may even get it)...but it's nothing really exciting.
Its a little better than what I expected, but If it wasn't star wars i probably wouldn't get it. However for a theme park game it seemed to me to be better than most, i'm just personally not a fan of them. Or really quests in my mmo's at all, i'd prefer to just grind mobs with a group of people i meet. Regardless i think it'll be fun to play through one class with a few friends while I wait for Dominus, which hopefully doesn't let me down.
For me the game ran very smooth and had no lag but sitting waiting for other members to join party conversations was painful, party members lagging to a point of d/c'ing and then waiiting for them to rejoin before moving on.
I won't be buying this game, been there seen it before deja vu. I cant Justify paying a monthly fee for something i've already done countless times before, I will continue with Skyrim for my Rpg fun, Battlefield 3 for my PvP fun and MTGO for my strategy fun.
I was on the fence about SWToR for awhile, but after playing this weeks beta with my gunslinger all I have to say is I want MORE! I think what truly sold me on the gameplay was the first flashpoint Esseles. Doing group content in this game has been very satisfying so far, primarily because of the dialog and just seeing what everyone says. It was pretty funny the group banter we were having based off what dialog option was chosen.
Ontop of that the combat in this game is pretty damn nice, it feels like a solid evolution for standard MMORPG combat mechanics. All the animations felt responsive, flashy, and all abilities felt useful. I'm just grateful to have a sci-fi MMORPG with non twitch based mechanics.
Yeah doing Black Talon on the Sith side was a riot and felt like being slap bang in a Star Wars movie, Bioware nailed that part. The only problem is I had an almighty crash right at the end after the last boss, bummer but still a memorable experience and isn't that what makes MMO play in the end the memories? Hearing my Laight Sabre fire up the first time and jumping into a fight was just epic, another one to cherish.

Friday: I went in with the thought; "alright, this game sucks" before I even played it. So I went in to the game and after one hour I was like; "Yeah this really does suck!".
Saturday: Same. Played for one hour.
Sunday (today): Friend and me decided to play together with a sith to check out the group aspect of the game. Group aspect worked pretty well but the difficulty was really tiring. We were like.. okay, it still sucks.
However, we got to some herioc 2+ quests. We died. We were motivated. From this point on, slowly our minds were changing. And it got better every level. Especially when I got my first companion. I loved it. And before I knew I was looking the crafting explanations. Scenery became better as well. Really enjoyed it from level 10 onwards.
I changed my mind why?
It's Star Wars. And I think they did very well on the "atmosphere" part.
Companions. I love it.
Crafting is something I really dig in this game.
Questing is not boring, even though the tasks are the same as other games.
It plays fluid.
The game supports grouping, as far as I can tell (which is pretty rare these days).

Cancelling pre-order. It felt like the Wolfenstein engine with voice acting.
Sure no matter what you do in the story it is always the same outcome. It isn't a dynamic story that you would see in a single player game. Only thing that matters during the cinematics is the apporval rating for companions and the LS/DS points.

I will still play it and don't regret pre-ordering it. I knew what is was before pre-ordering (had a friend in early beta).
Personnally the game don't run really smooth. Thats the first impression. Then we need to get used to this.
holding mouse right click to do rotation is very bad handled and jerky, we need to learn using WASD/QZSD

What changed your mind? lol
I'm happy someone noticed this too!
Adding to this:
Crude animations.
Stupid two first quests.
Not playable in my computer.
Childish questions and answers (first few) in the story.
Same old mobs doing the same old thing, just standing there waiting to be killed.
Dediced me to cancel preorder, or trying to.
