Do you really think that they're not paying attention to the biggest MMORPG launch in history?

The truth may be puzzling. It may take some work to grapple with. It may be counterintuitive. It may contradict deeply held prejudices. It may not be consonant with what we desperately want to be true. But our preferences do not determine what's true.
For the sake of clarity: we've talked about closed beta and by that we mean that there is no public information about how to get in, as we're selecting the candidates carefully. We will not reveal any more information apart from what we just said.
EDIT: to be even clearer, there won't be any webpage for getting into the closed beta and we won't reveal how we're selecting candidates.

I literally nearly fell down laughing with that one. Epic! Thank you so much! Really.
Can you, or any of the other GW2 Fans, name an MMO that has launched with as many pre-orders? Hmmm? Didn't think so.
You maybe to young to remember ever MMO launch for the past 5 years. Each one claimed to be the biggest in history.
That's a lovely little argument that does nothing to disprove the fact no MMORPG in history has ever lauched with this many players. I'm not claiming this will be the wow killer, and I won't speculate on retention rate or possible growth. I am speaking only of the launch.
What is your purpose here NMStudios? Why are you so upset?
ArenaNet has their own schedule of development and now closed beta is on that list. What in the world does this have to do with another game and another developer?

lol Upset? Hardly.
Companies pay attention to their competition, that's normal. I simply do not believe that their timing is anything but strategy. I also believe that it was a poor decision on their part, because the hype for SWTOR is just too big.
I'm not upset, I'm not complaining, just commenting.
I smell a decidedly obvious bout of trolling of GW2 fans. I wouldn't hold out hope for closed beta beginning soon if I were you, at least not until we get something from the blog.
That link above is a Q&A with a dev, the quote I gave was a direct quote from that dev, what more do you need?
Intellect from the people I'm talking to?
Think about it. I could create an account named ArenaNetTeam anywhere, just as I could claim to be Jon Peters or anyone. It should be obvious to anyone that information isn't official unless it is linked to a verifiable source.
You'd make a bad Wikipedia Editor.
This is an unverifiable source, and until I see someone from ArenaNet claim that this is them, I see no reason to believe why this isn't just some random person on the Internet having fun. Because that's the nature of the Internet, and these are the sorts of things that happen. Anyone can claim to be anyone. You could post on another site using my name, but it wouldn't necessarily be me, if you get my drift.
Now please understand here that I'm not accusing you of trolling, which I think you might have taken to heart, but rather I expect you to realise that the person you're quoting may be someone trolling you.
---
And frankly, I'm at a loss for words at the people who're actually buying that this is real. We've had successful trolls who've pretended to be people for months, before. This is a known thing on the Internet. How quickly people forget.

I think you are paranoid, or chasing windmills.
If you have followed GW2 for any length of time then you would know that 1.) the last profession would be announced before any beta announcement and 2.) they would annouce the closed beta before the end of this year. So does it make sense it to announce it now or at Christmas time?
And besides, this closed beta means nothing to everyone here except make it an official milestone in the games development. It has nothing to do with any other game. All they are doing is following their own schedule. And besides, didn't SWTOR change their early access days like a week ago anyway? Really you are seeing something that is not there at all.

Uh..I wish Twitter wasn't down right now or I would quote one of the writers saying that he has to get his wife's computer ready for closed beta. So according to that, only family and friends are being invited to that beta. I'm sure they will post more later, but there ya go. Unless you are really good friends or somehow related to the Anet people, good luck getting a beta invite. Just be patient and hope closed beta goes well and goes swiftly so we all get a shot at testing

Hmmm, not sure. I guess they might've looked at WoW's launch but I don't think it will affect their plans for a closed beta.
Ooh wait, you were talking about TOR???? AAHAHAHAHAHahah, good one ;P

Oh look -- a failed attempt at meaningful criticism.
Keep at it, tiger. You might have something worthwhile to share eventually if you work at it.

How many did they manage?

Aion only managed 400,000. Rift hasn't given us numbers but we know it was under 1,000,000

They claimed it was well over 1m.

Hi, My name is World of Warcraft. I launched with so many players that Blizz's system admins had to commit seppuku.
Everything creates huge amounts of negativity on the internet, that's what the internet is for: Negativity, porn and lolcats.

Looks like 200,000 accounts created on the first day. Nice try.

This is good news. I'm excited for this game. I don't expect to be in closed beta, but I sure hope I get lucky and they put me through!
