this is actually what happened to those banned players in swtor, read on. The article is spot on.

Also bioware has a really good system to track and ban credit sellers or so called gold farmers accounts.
It seem to be working for the first time. Blizzard in wow doesnt seem to track gold very well, however bioware is tracking golds transactions very well. kudos to bioware.
I wonder how they look at solo farming flashpoints.
I did Boarding Party solo yesterday at level 41 and my oh my, the farming potential was clear to see.
My brand new bloggity blog.
I like what they did. Shows they mean business. I havent had single "buy gold" in general or whisper and have 9 days /played (yuppie for vacation ).
Keep up the good work BW.
I also saw farming potential of friendly camps, moreso on PvE server and didnt do it. Use common sense. And no, i havent been banned for picking up nodes/chests when passing by when exploring. And i left those alone if some imps were there doing their quests instead snatching them in front of their noses (and yes, i do run flagged for PvP and dont go into their aoes to get them flagged).
Play fair and you have nothing to worry about.
They seem to be doing all right with the chat screening.
I've pulled down some in-game mail from spammers once or twice.

Philosophy of MMO Game Design
I would like to start by saying that in every game I have played, I've always been extremely active when it comes to reporting farmer and bots. They're easy to detect when you cross them in the field. Also of course, the general chat spammers and mail spammers.
I do feel Bioware is doing an amazing job with these people.
BUT!
I do not agree with them temporarily suspending accounts who are not trading credits, but just sitting there and getting a chest. I have not done this, I would have probably done it if I knew about it lol. but if in real life, I knew that by sitting next to a tree and a lump of gold would appear every now and then, I would probably just sit there all day and get it.
Being a greedy bastard is part of playing the game. this is an RPG (role playing game). I Queue PvP all day, and I do it because I feel it's easy money and exp. Does that mean that I am exploiting the game? NO! This is the same, there is a chest there, and it's popping every 10 minutes, so I feel like sitting there and waiting for it to pop so I can loot it. It is like Queuing every 10 minutes for a PvP match to get my 2-3k credits.
honestly, I think they got to be careful right now to alienate people. The game is on thin line, don't get me wrong, I love the game and am enjoying it, but I already have 8 friends who joined with me at release who already quit the game because they are feeling it's too repetitive and boring, and I am seeing a lot of people on the forums saying the same thing. I think Bioware should work on gold farmers, and that is fine, but don't start suspending anyone who does anything that to you is suspicious telling them they can call customer service and rectify things, because that is a bad service, and a lot of the players might just come back to the game, especially if these people were unjustly suspended.
That is my 2 cents.
Hm, is this really a bannable offense? Sounds more like poor game design as they did not seem to be using any loopholes or exploits but rather just use the faction allegience to their advantage.

If the zone is level 40+ the chest should only be able to be opened by a level 40+. How hard of a fix would that be.
Everything I say is my opinion or personal preference. You may or may not find it useful to your cause but regardless I am entitled to it.
If something in the game seems too good to be true, for example, being able to farm a level 50 chest every 10 minutes for 4000-5000 credits a pop, when you are only a level 14 character, I would suggest that you just don't do it, or you might get your arms ripped off ... ask any bot who has played against a Wookie
You misunderstoos quite a few things.
Gold farmers are separate from people that used this little trick. Wont go into more details but its nothing like queuing for PvP. You can do this and you will get banned for it. Good call on BWs part.
Thumbs up for BW, many more people will respect things like this and give thumb up.
Why? They are doing something which the game allows them to do which imo is a ban for the devs rather than the players. Sounds to me that Bioware is trying to push the blame on the players for what is clearly either poor game design or an oversight on their part.
But my point of view comes from playing sandbox games and I often try to go away from the linear path which Themeparks want you to take.
My gaming blog
Bioware has a team studying player's activity so called metrics seems to be working.
Its going to be hard to trade 1,000,000 credits or sell credits online without getting flagged.
I think EVE Online has its own team studying the economy and credit transactions....
I dont believe blizzard has a team that is looking into where gold transactions for players.
You wont get banned for going off linear path or looting high level chest as low level char. That is not why these accounts have been suspended.
Correct. The writer was stating that the credit traders (using bots) were using this trick to farm credits without doing much at all, and then selling the credits online.
The normal ones you can do indefinately I think.
My brand new bloggity blog.
The problem with this is that people are taking Bioware's word as the "truth". Now I'm not saying there aren't gold farmers, there always are, but I think that it is highly likely that in being over aggressive against gold farmers they have banned a few legit players. I'm assuming they are using metrics and metrics do not tell the whole story. Does a player that does a lot of buying/selling for his guild look much different than a farmer that does a lot of buying/selling for his bot-guild? Does a friend giving out credits to his friend look different than a bot delivering credits to a buyer?
The whole Illum thing is just hilarious though. "Sure you can go to Illum below level 40, and sure you can loot the chests, but loot too many and suspended!". How many is too many? 3? 15? 150? They designed it poorly so they are now enforcing an arbitrary rule. They should have just slapped a level restriction on the planet or the containers until they can fix the poor design.
i dont know today but back then wow wasnt wellrquipt to deal with gold seller!industry evolved from the get go often they put tool in place so they can monitor what is actually going on on accesible by player other just by the company!
I am so glad I could go to Dath with a couple of friends farming NS all day no matter what level I was.
Removed some high-level harvesting nodes from Tatooine, Corellia, and Ilum.
Heh, anyone wanna guess which ones?
Could be related to something else, I suppose. Or the Devs are watching a swarm of farmers gathering in other spots now.

I dont see how people became so blind with this game and dont get that if a game gives you the opportunity to camp at a lvl 50 box at lvl 14 and ofcourse keep the stuff that you get for your own use why this should be banable?
i dont get both the players agreeing with it and with bioware banning these players.
I dont play swtor but Bioware has made this game so easy mode that you are even able to do this and these players are just doing what is available to them in this MMORPG world. So basicly without using any hacks/third party programs, illegal trading or anything like that you can think of there is a way you can get banned when you are just playing the game,
I think that tells allot about this game and while i was considering trying this game out and purchase the game myself this topic made me wake up again and wouldnt even play it if my copy+sub time was given me for free.
QUOTED FROM LINK:

Second, a smaller number of accounts were warned or temporarily suspended for exploiting loot containers on Ilum. To be completely clear, while players may choose to travel to Ilum earlier than the recommended level (40+) and may loot containers if they can get to them, in the cases of those customers that were warned or temporarily suspended, they were systematically and repeatedly looting containers in very high numbers resulting in the game economy becoming unbalanced.

THEN WHY ARE THEY ABLE TO DO IT? If a lvl 14 can break your ingame economy just like that ur game is pretty much darn broken. I know they want a carebear easy mode hit max lvl without dieing game but increasing the aggro placing some mobs closer to the treasure = problem solved.
i am ofcourse not talking about the gold sellers but about the fait players just playing their game.
Guy1 says: i want to reach lvl 40 so badly to farm all tha epic gear and pwn nubs at PeeVeePee
Lvl14Guy says: I traveled to a high end location and already got my epic gear and found enough money to buy me items to 1 shot lvl 20 mobs for easy leveling and when i reach lvl 40 i have maxed gear for that lvl and a shitload of gold to buy everything i want.
SERIOUSLY finishing 1 game of pacman is more intense then playing this -Cencored- from start till end game.
Never will understand this view by some people. Life allows me the posability to shoot you in the head with my Sig, should I do it just because I can? And if I do, should I believe the cops shouldn't arrest me for killing your dumb ass? Should I expect them to not push the blame on me for your murder since the game of life was poorly designed.
Oh and yeah, just to point out, real life is a sandbox game, so dont use that as an excuse either.
You should know better, level 15 taking in 5000 credits ever 10 minutes without any effort, when you KNOW everyone else at level 15 is making 5000 credits every 3 hours. YOU SHOULD KNOW BETTER! Did your momma never spank you when you were a kid? If not maybe she should have, obviously you never learned about doing whats right and not doing what you know isn't. (and no, this is not a personal attack against this particular poster, he just gave the example and I am responding to everyone who has this attitude towards exploiting a game.)
(DISCLAIMER - The use of the word YOU in the above post is not directed at any one person in particular, but towards those who fall into the category itself - there is no personal attack here, neither intentional nor implied.)
Hmmm...
The only bannable offense I see here is botting. Farming chests should not be bannable, so long as you're not using some kind of BUG exploit to cause duping or very fast chest spawning.
The article just seems like it assumes these guys were botting in the title. But then it says these guys were farming chests in a high level area. Farming is fine...botting with a macro or third party program is not.
So if BW banned them for botting...okay. If BW banned them for farming...not okay.
Are you team Azeroth, team Tyria, or team Jacob?
Yes, these situations you present are clearly similar.
On one hand, you have a player repeatedly looting chests that are put in the game TO BE LOOTED.
On the other hand, you have someone murdering other people through their computer in real life.
Yeah, no difference here. If you think these situations are the same, then you have some interesting morals .
Are you team Azeroth, team Tyria, or team Jacob?
Comparing real life to a online world created by humans wich they can create however they want to avoid this problem much?
your vieuw and opinion on this is invalid.
They were talking about this on gamebreaker, and I kind of agree, because you get some people who just like to farm, and if you want people to not farm stuff thats not for their level just put a limit on it, instead they are going with warning and temp bans.
This shows that if you step off the rails its curtains for you.
The truth may be puzzling. It may take some work to grapple with. It may be counterintuitive. It may contradict deeply held prejudices. It may not be consonant with what we desperately want to be true. But our preferences do not determine what's true.
