SWTOR has seemingly polarized the "gaming elite", those who sit back and decry the status of modern mmos and pine for the days when SWG was all pre-CE and EVE wasn't cash shopped up. Some of the biggest forum names around here are on a seemingly endless crusade against this game, saving us poor huddled masses from our uneducated game picks. If we enjoy this, we obviously are drooling idiots and need to be shown the light. Its eitist, arrogant and doesn't reflect a positive light on yourselves or the genre.
Let it go. The game will sink or swim without your endless baiting. All you do by predicting 200-300k subs in 2 months is set yourself up so that if you are wrong, you'll have to lay low, hoping people don't look at your posting history (I call this the "don't brag before going on the range" rule). You can hold the GW2 grail up and mutter about it being your last hope, but now that everyone has had their little tirade about this being the end of modern society, lets just let the game sink or swim on its own merits.
I love you
Currently playing SWTOR and it's MUCH better than it was at launch.

I agree about the polarization. However the reasons for people hating the game aren't all the same. Assuming they are is a tad ignorant.
I'm not a sandbox fan, I quite like theme parks but I also think that as theme parks go, outside of the VO, that SW:TOR is a 'meh' title, never played SWG so cant compare it to that, I'm going on experience of other theme parks like AoC, Rift, Aion, LotRO, Vanguard etc. The game sites need the devs on side to get the news and interviews that draw in the readers so of course they are going to be generous with their scores. At the end of the day it's your experience that counts and if your enjoying it have fun!

Wow you summed up what I've been thinking since the game released. I am a sandbox fan, I was a huge swg player pre-nge and I agree with your post 100 percent. A bunch of elitist that make up at most 5 percent of the mmo community here running around on a private crusade to somehow save us from our own inability to see that swtor is a bad game and we can't be enjoying it. Let them make the fools of themselves that they are, there is one individual that is gonna find that their little blogs aren't gonna be so popular as people see just how biased they are.
100% of reviewers like the game, but even Crest can't get 100% of dentists to recommend their toothpaste. Only get 9/10 dentists will recommend their product. What the heck is going on around here!
Bioware has made the perfect game of all time. Period.
Not even close. Period.
Closer than you'd like. Semicolon;
The majority of gamers would like to disagree with you.
yep.
Baldur's gate 2, then BG 1m then Dragon Age.
Everything else is shit for console play-with-shit.

had to be done....cause I'm out of coffee, and just feeling that way.
Looks like your assuming again. Please show where I have ever stated that I wanted this game to fail or be bad. I won't hold my breath on that one because I know you can't as I haven't.
My prior statement is pure truth... something that fans, like stealthynin1, cannot handle. This game is NOT perfect. NO game is perfect. That is a pure, unquestionable fact no matter if you want to believe it or not.
Whoever said this is the most perfect game of all time, I hope you're trolling.
Anyway.. game magazines, whether they are directly "paid off" or not, feel the pinch when they take a dump on any major release, this has been proven via people getting fired and companies losing advertising $$$. That doesn't mean the game isn't good, it's a solid RPG, but if you really buy into the hype, you're kidding yourself. The game is far from perfect, let it have its moment in the sun for what it is.
Where will the praise be then? At a level higher than any POS MMO sandbox game. That is where it is, and will continue to be.
Thanks for playing.
You have an unhealthy obsession with bashing sandbox MMOs. Just thought I'd let you know.
That doesn't mean he isn't right. Eve was the last time someone actually made a good sandbox and that was 2003.
The whole idea with sandboxes are great and I am certain you can make a huge sandbox that attracts a lot of players but most devs making sandboxes are inexperienced people with a budget that you just can't make a good MMO out of it.
Saying that all sandboxes will fail in the future is of course dumb to say the least, themeparks with the budget and experience that games like MO, FE and DF have also attract few players but I for one wish someone could make a sandbox game with the same quality that TOR do have.
That doesn't mean you have to like TOR, I am not that found of it myself but Bioware is really good on doing what they do, unlike every company that have made a sandbox since CCP and Origin.
Lets hope Bethesda/Zenimax game that will be reveiled this year can raise the bar, or at least that CCP put in a new gear on WoDO.

True, dat.
Eve Online and maybe UO are also the only sandboxes... EVER... that managed to fix most of their bugs. And some would probably argue against them.
SWG takes a serious case of rose colored glasses to celebrate as a "good" sandbox. It was bugged to Bermuda, and most of the open world "choice" you had was an illusion. If you weren't the flavor of the month - if you didn't wear composite armor - if you didn't harvest the right components from the right planet to make your stuff, you were second rate in PvP, at best.
"You can have any beer you want, as long as it's a Corona."
It would be funny as hell if GW2 gets bad reviews lol. Something tells me it will haha. Watch it get like a 5/10 or 6/10. That would be really funny.
inorite?! Then it'll all be "Bah, reviews don't mean anything if ur having fun" or "yeah, that's what the critics say, but here's a link to a guys blog that thinks it's great".
Warahammer Online got all posivite review too, 8 and 9.
Rift got all positive reviews, 8 and 9.
So what's your point ? Look at these game population now. The point of a MMO is not how polish it is at launch, it's the retention rate. Review dont show that.
it can have all the positive reviews in the world but it wont make me play it, simply put the game is not for me
Can I ask...
If that's the case, why are you in the games forum?

Fair enough.
But I still suspect you're a closet SWTOR fan - that's REALLY why you're here. You seem to have SOME level of interest in the game, or you wouldn't be.
I contrast you posting here to my posting about GW2. I have NO interest in GW2, so, I won't be visiting the GW2 forum. NOTHING that game does will excite me. Some people will love it.
I guess it's an apples/oranges thing though - GW2, while popular amongst a few, doesn't have a fraction of the attention/hype this game had, so maybe I'd be here reading as well if I had no interest in the game myself.
The funny thing is... even if SWTOR somehow loses most of its players and ends up with around 300k subscribers (which I highly doubt btw), it will still be much more popular than almost any sandbox MMO.
I know its hard to accept, but SWTOR is getting all the positive ratings it is getting because the game is good. Almost everyone who isn't a disgruntled sandbox MMO vet is greatly enjoying the game and is giving it good marks. You can't trust the user reviews on sites like Metacritic because people who don't like the game do not give it a fair review. Any fair review of SWTOR would be 5+ at a minimum based on the quality and polish of the game, yet the haters often give it a 1 or a 0 on user reviews. This is the act of a person with a personal desire to destroy the game. It is a far cry from anything even remotely resembling a fair review. I don't care how much you dislike a game... I don't think I have EVER played ANY mmorpg that deserved a 0 or even a 1.
The fact is SWTOR is a quality game whether haters like it or not. You can't stop it and nothing you can do will cause any true harm to it. It is what it is and it will be successful regardless of your feelings.

You do realize that sandbox MMO's are cheaper to run overall. 300k would kill SWTOR budget wise. They have investors and debt already built up from this game, plus Lucas alwasy gets his "cut" first.

Good point, only my ocd son, after talking to him about this same issue, went back in and recalced the scores by throwing out every 0 and 10. He claims it lowered the user rating to 5.9. Which to me is about right where I would put it, so its subjective but at the same time, it's not far off either.

agree 100%

I too agree, I think SWTOR will be succesful filling a niche just as SWG did. For how long, that is not really up to the gamers but to EA and Lucas. If the time came the game would face f2p status, IMO Lucas would rather pull the plug then face the brand name hit.
Nothing like the sweet sound of NOOB's tweating to make my ears perk up.
I just read the IGN review. 9.0? You have to be joking this game is a solid 6.5 - 7.5 at most.
I am level 50 and the end game is no finished in so many ways.
Let's not even talk about the huge lack of features this game has. Literally no features. You can't even stay in a party when queing for Scenarios
THERE IS NO SCOREBOARD IN SCENARIOS,,,,,,,,,,THAT'S HOW UNFINISHED THIS GAME IS.
You do realize its your own fault for rushing to 50? When WoW was introduced there wasn't anything to do at 60. It's been that way for many MMO's, when they are launched. Stop spacebarring through the quests and learn a bit about your story line.

Blue: Or, that EA has been shelling out the cash for the great reviews.
Red: So, you speak for "almost everyone"? You know that the ones who don't enjoy it are "disgruntled sandbox MMO vets"? Yeah... your statement has no factual basis.

With the amount of advertising and real world marketing, such as flash mobs and movie/cartoon marathons ALL DAY... I'm just gonna assume they paid everybody including reviews. Great Star Wars game tho
I think the way sites rate catagories might be adding to the confusion. Adding catagories such as innovation really have little to do with whether a game is fun or not. Most new MMo's should get a 2 or 3 in that catagory and that isn't necessarly a bad thing to most of us. People compare all new games to WoW which added almost nothing to creativity from the ones before such as EQ and DAoC. The fact WoW didn't have a lot of innovation didn't make it bad, in fact its refining of the past MMo's creativity just helped make it that much better. On the other hand rating the new MMO's a honest 2 or 3 on these silly catagories would give new MMO's unrealistic scores of around 5 or less. No one with any sense would tough a game with ratings that low. This game is very fun to the vast majority so a rating lower than 8 would of been unwarrented and in my opinion stupid.
Maybe it would be better to just leave off ratings and tell us what the rater finds fun and what he finds lacking. In the summary tell us why he actually likes or dislikes the game in spite of or due to its short comings. I will say that in the end it is up to each of us to decide whether a game meets our expections as I like SWTOR, Rift, STO and don't like LoTR. Does that make the best or worst games? No, it is just my opinion and I wouldn't for a minute try to change someone elses mind that others on this board seem to strive to do. State your case and move on.

I also don't think that Bioware or EA are paying for all their positive reviews. It is possible that some of this happens... and I know it does in the software industry, but I think its hard to argue that SWTOR is not an extremely well-made piece of software even if you don't like it.
