If you like watching Cut scenes 50% of the time, and dont mind a lacklustre world go for SWTOR. If you want a game that is not missing anything from the MMORPG genre and has some unique aspects thrown in, go for RIFT.
I do like listening instead of reading my quest text , nice change imo just saying .
whats with peeps saying " long term rift is blablah but swtor is so much better " how can you compare 4-6 months of rift vs 1 month of swtor ? wait till you played both of same ammount of time
most new games are fun, most 2+ months old games you played are worthless not wortth 20s startup time to launch them
i actually went and got myself rift when swtor early access ended.. got to 34+ lvl and was " well this is getting boring by now " and i knew there was nothing at endgame , and was blown away by all rift offered at end game , but if you expect either game to hold you for 6+ months loging every day for 2-5 hours you are out of your mind , there is no such game created yet, and doubt there ever will, everything gets oldand boring
Well put about there being no game to hold daily attention. When people fly through them and play for hours each day, as a certain type of people are liable to do, then it will get boring very fast, and there really won't be an MMO out here that won't become as such. However I don't feel that you need to dedicate time to a game that you aren't having fun with. In beta and at launch I was having a blast in Rift. In beta in SWTOR I was having almost zero fun, same story at launch. I don't think we should have to continue to pay hard earned money to a GAME company that can't even hook us in at first. The very least they could do is hook us in at the begining and make it fun then let it get boring I mean isn't that more logical? MMO developers are probably the most lazy game developers out there because we don't hold them to any accountability, we just keep buying the crap they keep putting out. Trion at least tries in my opinion, and they listen to their players. Will EA/Bioware do the same for SWTOR players? Possibly they will. But I am not going to keep playing a game that isn't even fun in the first few weeks of playing it.
"God, please help us sinful children of Ivalice.."
As for the above poster saying the results will be skewed, I presume the OP was looking for players that had played both games, something you wouldn't have in another forum.
This.
I am interested in the perspective of Rift players or those who have played Rift. I didn't want to throw this into the SWTOR forum for a flame war, or in a general forum because probably it would get derailed more easily.

Never played DAOC I take it, kept many occupied for years at 2-5 hours a day.
On that note SWTOR, is a much better game then Rift, Rift just bores me to tears.
It's just my own personal interest. I was interested to hear from other current or former Rift players in the same situation as me (ending the first month of SWTOR and considering other gaming options). Quite often, there are intelligent and insightful posts and I enjoy reading them.
I cancellled SWTOR yesterday, but I like to have one MMORPG in my gaming options rotation. I've played enough WoW and I can't go back to it. Not to criticize WoW here, but 2+ years is enough. I love Darkfall, but have problems with the present state of the game. So, I've narrowed it down to Rift as my mmorpg (and I've played just about every one that's out there).
I like to play Skyrim and Minecraft, which offer exploration, but they get lonely. I like pvp, so BF3 is good for that. However, I need to explore and I like to play with other people sometimes. So I think Rift will answer the call for that.
I'm a casual player. I don't log in every day. I don't play for more than 2-3 hours at a sitting, so I believe Rift definitely will have enough content for me. I re-subbed last night.
Was on Rift last night much to my surprise I have 3 free days of gameplay, Trion must have been doing a promotion or something. Anyways I rolled a new toon and was quite shocked at the amount of people receiving veterans rewards for 6 month and 12 months which are displayed in the zone chat as achievements.
So either old players are coming back and had some time in the bag for these rewards, are rolling new toons or there is quite an influx of new payed subs.

Well Forum Talker,
Something to think about, Rift is not a year old yet. if you see a 12 month vet award, that means someone subscribed for a full year. As Trion is giving out the rewards early. Which says alot as far as a game goes. Yes, there are quite alot of new subscribers. Im in que everynight just to log in for at least 10-20 minutes. Sometimes longer.
While Rift isn't a good game in my opinion I can play it while waiting for GW2. On the other hand, nothing in the world could ever force me to touch SWTOR with a ten-foot pole. This shlock is even worse then Aion and you need to try really hard to beat Aoin at crappiness.
MMORPG genre is dead. Long live MMOCS (Massively Multiplayer Online Cash Shop).
After playing TOR since launch I will say Rift is the better game.
BioWare is one of the most incompetent developers I have seen in a while. They are actively making TOR worse or ignoring glaring major problems.
TOR is bugged beyond comprehension, every single aspect about TOR is abound with bugs. From the UI to the instances and raids to the much hyped cut scenes.
TOR needed at least 6 more months of development to eliminate the various bugs, especially the end game which does not seem to have had any testing at all. Maximum level battlegrounds, instances and raids are frustrating at best and unplayable due to game breaking bugs much of the time.
Rift had problems in its first month, that is undeniable, but not nearly this bad or with this much inaction from the developer.

Unlike Tor, Rift actually tested their endgame prior to release. Expert dungeons were being tested in Alpha back in October almost 5 months prior to release Many top guilds were invited to Alpha betwen October and December for the purpose of testing endgame. Greenscale was tested starting in December. Ros started testing in January. All this testing and the game did not release until 2/24, Compare that to SWTOR which opened a special high level server on beta two weeks before release for testing endgame.
While I love the Star Wars genre. I am not a fan of SWTOR. Not because of the story lines or cinematics. Which are some of the best I have seen in any game. But rather gameplay. Combat is clunky. the commands are off base and tedious. I feel like im playing DAOC all over again. Which was 10 years ago. They really could have made a better UI.
So my pick is Rift. As it is flawless in its game mechanics. Has a good open world. PVP is going to be quite something after this next patch. A well made environment, streamlined and non linear. What I like in a game. Rifts class/soul system is by far the best out in the market currently.
I will not resub SWTOR after my initial month is up. I feel minus the storyline/cinematics like the game was a waste of money.
So choice between a singleplayer WoW clone, or an even more singleplayer WoW clone... why don't you save money and just play Diablo or something?
Has the MMO genre fallen so far that we're comparing two complete WoW clones and trying to figure out which is better? Neither are worth anyone's times.
Have to vote against SWTOR. Game was fun for about 30 hours, then I just couldn't log in anymore.
Rift is certainly no savior of MMOs like many here would have you believe. The community is just as crappy as WoW. In fact, ran into some dope who was crying about the DPS of the group going too slow.. at level 39 mind you. Reminded me of my PUG WoW days were people would rage about DPS not being above 1600 in 5 man heriocs(back when cap was 80)!!
I really enjoy the soul system, and its very easy to get groups. Even while leveling up, which is very hard to find in a MMO. The BGs are not as fun as WoW's. Overall, Rift is a step up from WoW - its too bad it couldn't maintain its early momentum. SWTOR is just a clusterf$#@.

Rift has the best implementation of dynamic event public grouping, short of anything that isn't released yet. I'm not sure why people knock rifts and invasions so much - Its been a long time since I've seen so much massively multiplay mayhem in an MMO, so IMHO, they serve their purpose well, and it was a lot of fun.
At least, until everyone ended up at the level cap, leaving all that behind, to grind instances.
I wish they had an endgame that incorporated all that better. Like maybe a huge lv.50 zone that put the rift dynamic into overdrive, with all the factions invading eachother and fighting it out, including some sort of contested FvF content in the middle.. or something like that.
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.

Sadly, that is way too ambitious for today's "hit and run" mindset developers.

So this?
Also pretty sure Aion and ILUM in TOR prove how much of a complete failure the idea of open world pvp zones are in two faction games. If you want pvp wait for GW2. If you want pve go play Rift, TOR, WoW.

What's going on with the editor? Not sure how I messed up quoting like that, but anyhow..
No idea what you're trying to say with that pic. Been a few months since I've played Rift. Maybe explain a little?
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.
If Ember Isle is exactly like what I'm talking about (is it?) then what's the problem with it? Is there not enough incentive? Like, is it just for gear and rep? Does it encourage public grouping? Are there any PvP objectives, and have they improved the rewards for doing them?
Looks like I may have missed a big chunk of content to pick apart, while I've been gone...

What makes Guild Wars 2's PvE any less legitement than WoW, TOR, or Rift's? Not only is it more MMO than all of those games, but it's also more RPG than 2, arguably 3 of them. Dynamic events and personal story, respectively. Likewise, what's wrong with WoW, TOR, and Rift's PvP exactly?
The two don't have to "mix", but Guild Wars 2 throws its hat into the ring on that as well, with World vs World vs World that incorporates dynamic events, and massive 3 faction PvP with castle sieges and guild keeps.
Having good PvE and PvP are NOT mutually exclusive.

IMHO, not only aren't they mutually exclusive, they're so much better when they support eachother, rather than marginalizing the PvP by keeping it seperate and pointless, like most MMOs do.

They are both theme park clones but RIFT has way more polish and features - plus arguably the best mmo dev team around.
