While that does at first strike me as odd, after some thought I could totally see it. If it's well designed for consoles and PC separately, it could actually work.
Think about it.. you go out and adventure in the land - you don't even need to form groups for the most part. The combat is twitch based so controllers could totally take advantage of that. Yeah, considering everything I know about the game's design, I could totally see it happening and even working.
I'll stick to PC though...
so basically the UI is going to suck.
that's all I get from multi-platform mmos: the ui is going to suck.
has any mmo ever had an ok ui with cross-platform?
Basically the UI of a game developed for consoles and then ported to PC never works good.
But in this case, the whole game is developed around PC... including the UI... and afterwards ported to Consoles... Arenanet will give us a great UI, it was allready an awesome feat when i played the game at Gamescom.
I just hope they will have sepperate servers for PC and consoles.
Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)
wow so much QQing about the UI; I am actually pumped about the news because this means I can be playing GW2 with my xbox while my bro plays it with his PC!!
Personally it doesn't bother me, DCUO was fine for me, in fact it was better than fine. But that means nothing, it will get slated for it no matter what. On the other hand Anet probably don't care about that and will deffinately go for the additional revenue stream a console port would generate.
Also fanboism in this thread, lol. It was being militantly defended against a perseived onslaught that never materialised.
----- The person who is certain, and who claims divine warrant for his certainty, belongs now to the infancy of our species.
Really! If this game coming out on consoles which will not effect the PC version has made you lose interest, you could not of been that interested in the first place.
I'm banking money he had no interest in the game either.
What's funny is Anet is obviousely making the game with PC in mind first and obviousely consoles seconded.
I am curious how it's gonna work, DCUO was multiplatform as well.
As long as they do it like CD Project with The Witcher 2, im ok.
I just they don't have to cut corners due to console limitations.
Thought you had lost all interest in GW2?
CD Project will do a great job porting TW2 to Xbox 360,of that i have no doubt.
Now what about the other 20-30 key you can bind with a keyboard around WASD? What about gaming keyboards that have more and macro functions? My Naga mouse has 17 programmable buttons, where ya gona fit that on the controller? Also what you have there will work but the response time will be a little slower then a mouse and keyboard. Only advantage a controller has is running circles around people. Function is not the problem, be equal to a keyboard and mouse never. Equal to a gaming mouse and keyboard imposable. Then tell console gamers they need to buy a mouse and keyboard to play it on their console and the sale turn into nada.
Yeah but that's irrelevant.
It doesn't matter how many keys you have on your keyboard if the game doesn't need them. 17 programmable buttons on your mouse? Well GW2 only have 10 skills and then maybe some supplementary F1-F5 ones. So what are the other buttons for? And what about all the buttons on your keyboard?
This isn't an argument of whether a controller can ever offer the versatility that a keyboard and mouse can in general...I think we know the answer to that question. This is an argument of how well GW2 can work on a controller. If GW2 doesn't have a need for the 30 keys on your keyboard and the 17 buttons on your mouse, then they aren't relevant.
Do you even know what macros are and the HUGE advantage they give an MMOer? If you cant see the advantage a keyboard and mouse gives with keybinding and macros and the even bigger advantage a gaming mouse and keyboard has I am not even gona try. I will just say you take 2 people of equal skill, one uses a controller and give one the gamer mouse and keyboard the later will win every time.
You're missing the point...
It's not about whether the game can be played better on a keyboard and mouse. It's can the game be played in an ENJOYABLE manner on a controller.
As I understand, console gamers and PC gamers will be on different servers. So it doesn't matter that PC gamers will have an advantage because of their control mechanism.
Do you see XBOX BF3 players bitching and moaning about PC BF3 players? No! Of course you don't, because they aren't playing against them.
So long as the game is FUN on consoles, it doesn't matter that PC gamers have all these crazy macros.
That how DCU-Online started. Console gamers on one server and PC on another. The console gamers didnt have a large enough poll of players to make it work so they stuck bother together. The unofficial forums is filled with rants of unbalanced gaming. If the game comes out on consoles in 2014 how many new people do you think it will draw? Enough to make a stable server? How many time zone dose that cross? It would have to be a large influx of new gamers and that does not normally happen on a MMO 2 years old. Maybe if they shared the same release date.
Lol, they never merged the DCUO servers, you can even see that on the site if you click the players tab and the console population is actually higher, don't pull things out of your ass.
I played FFXI for many years. I greatly do not wish to experience the same problems/limitations FFXI had due to being tied to a console. Hopefully Anet can pull this off but atm it is a huge de-hype for me. (still really looking forward to the game though)
The limitations of FFXI were due to far more than it also being on consoles.
Not true, unless you're talking about it being made for a console and then ported over... in which case it's the same thing to me. So so many of it's problems simplify down to consoles, it's even been mentioned by their devs a few times.
Key point, Anet is making it for the PC, so hopefully they won't have any of these 'console' problems.
We really need separate forums for every newly launched game. There can be the anti-<MMO> one and there can be the 'what general discussion should be' one. All the lamenting can happen together where each can find solace in like minded can't-move-on-ers leaving the rest of us to actually move forward and discuss meaningful and relevant topics.

I was told they did and that why a number of my guildies quit the game. Guess I was miss informed. Or I didnt what they ment. They talked about the UI being dumb down for balance and the server merge how it made a mess. I dont know guess I got my info messed up.
It's supposed to be launched sometime after the PC release. But seriously, what the heck?
Ok, now it's official : the MMO genre is doomed.
/tinfoilhaton
Indeed the genre is officially distroyed!
The truth may be puzzling. It may take some work to grapple with. It may be counterintuitive. It may contradict deeply held prejudices. It may not be consonant with what we desperately want to be true. But our preferences do not determine what's true.

I don't understand you guys that go this way with it... I like PCs and choose to use one over a X-Box, but saying a genre i doomed because it is ported to the X-Box? Confusing and just a product of 'leet pro' posturing IMO.
If, for example, GW2 featured as a launch title for the 720 and made use of it's rumoured Wii U style (reportedly more the size of a Vita) touch screen controller then nothing would have to be sacrificed and the game would gain a whole new market, which any fan must see is a good thing.
I dunno i dont see why the Xbox and PS3 versions just come with the lil keyboard attachments in the box, they cant really cost more then 30.00 to make and sell, especially when i got 2 of them for 9.99 at walmart 2 years back. If they had a box that contained the lil chat pads and the games required them to work right.... i see that as a win for Sony and MS and the players will have plenty of buttons to use for skills and chatting.
playing a console you essentially have a mouse under each thumb.
By 'essentially' you mean 'not fully functional'...which is fail...ever play FPS?....go play Unreal on a console against some PC players....then talk about your 2 'mice'..
I also think its great that GW2 will gain exposure thru this .
For those worrying about the UI being shit because of this move, well don't. A move of 'consolising' the UI of the pc version is simply unimaginable. We are talking about ArenaNet devs here not the many other triple A companies who take shortcuts and implement a console-like ui in pc versions of their games just to get a simultaneous platform release of their games or what not >.>. ArenaNet actually read the forums and cares about our reactions, feedback, comments and suggestions.
Also take note that only a small team are gonna make console version. I can almost guarantee you that this small team will stay away from tweaking the UI of pc version :P.

I have thought this myself in the past, but the touch screen controlled rumoured for ther 720 will allows for that I guess... basically any key configuration and be displayed, be it a querty keyboard or tailored game scheme.
Consoles, huh? So how exactly is this going to provide balanced PvP if players can play either console or PC versions of the game? You'd figure that one group would definitely have an edge. Not to mention all the UI issues it will cause in one, or both, platforms.
But I'm sure the GW2 fans view this as yet another great revolution to the mmorpg genre, since Arenanet always makes the right decisions.

Very true, but how does this help with current consoles ?
Less hacking, less cheating and less pirating not to mention you make more money when offing it on multiple platforms. It is a good decision. Ofcourse the pc elitists will hate but whatever... lol
Hmm i would love this to be on the console (PC elitist) but the control scheme needs to be intelligent, reason why i think making the chat pads required would be a very good idea.
Maybe LB could be the modifier to access the F1-F5 skills? So like LB + (RB or X or Y or B or RT) could do the F1-F5.
I think it would be cool if the interface would "highlight" skills 1-5 when you aren't pressing LT or LB, highlight skills 6-10 when you are pressing LT, and highlight F1-F5 when you are pressing LB. It would make it clear what you will be using. What do you think?
I don't know... I think modifiers may be harder to learn than just have a full controller layout, especially when you have to get used to what buttons you need to press to get the skills you want and I'm saying this because DCUO uses this system and I totally failed to grasp it lol.
Heheh yeah, I can see that. I think the best we can hope for is that ANet comes up with a better controller layout than we can .
So I've actually gone back and taken your advice on the F1 to F5 thing being activated. It seems it makes sense to use the modifier in a part of the controls that isn't used too often, for instance the F1-F5s and since they usually are one offs like the Thief's steal skill, it would make sense to just have it activated by a modifier.
Here's the new scheme with all the bells and whistles... EVEN JUMPING !!!

I personally don't see GW2 being for the current gen tho tbh...
I can't see MS changing it's policy towards chat pads now though, but at least the next gen shows more promise of flexibility.
haha, I knew the rationalizations would be rapant when I heard this. If any other MMO had ported to console, you all would be trolling that game to death. And you know it.

Yep, yet people aren't for one main reason. A-net has continuously stated that this will be a PC game FIRST and ADAPTED by a tech team for play on CONSOLES. Which is exactly OPPOSITE of what EVERY OTHER COMPANY has done with their games in the PAST THREE TO FOUR YEARS.
So while I feel that some fans of this game and this company have some blind faith issues when it comes to GW2, in this case I don't feel that this is one of them.
