I am about to be a condescending prick because WoW clone type threads piss me off. Why? Because WoW is a clone. WoW as far as interface and character rendering and all that go is basically a DAOC clone with some EQ1 thrown in. WoW didn't really invent anything, EVERYTHING that is in WoW was in Asheron's call, EQ1, or DAOC before it. The problem here is that some of ya'll are young and don't remember these games and think WoW was the originator and bestest ever. The fact is not only is WoW a clone, it doesn't do PVP as well as daoc(not even close) it doesn't do pve as good as EQ1, and its graphics are reminiscent of a saturday morning children's cartoon, and I am not talking about anything as cool as pinkie and the brain here.
And the sense of community, pvp and otherwise was better on EQ and DAOC, but hey keep riding that WoW train, you may even convince yourself panderans don't suck.
EQ1 had better PvE? Better Faction Pride? I dont know what your taking to think that but can I have some of it? I played EQ1 for 3 expansions all I saw was snobs who had their nose so far up in the air they might as well be sniffing the ionosphere. 90% of the players in EQ1 defined what it meant to be narcissistic snobs. And dont get me started on the boredom known as DAoC.
Yeah... I'm going take a wild stab and said you played neither. Of course EQ1 had better PvE.
If you read what i stated you would see that i did play EQ1 from launch till the 3rd expansion. What I hated more about the game than the pretentious snobs in the game is that SOE made you see a loading screen everytime you wanted to see a new zone. DAoC's graphics were so bad it looked like they asked a bunch of seventh graders to do the artwork. on top of that the one class i do play in fantasy games(if the game has it) the necromancer was more spell caster orientated than actual work on the minions that the necromancer should have. IMO if you want to see the older games about PvE content then the only game you need to look at is Asheron's Call. Unline EQ1 or DAoC which forced you to group hunt Asheron's Call allowed you to solo or group hunt depending on your mood. Also what made Asheron's Call better than EQ1 is that Turbine added content every month without forcing players to buy a new expansion pack. Yes Asheron's Call did add Expansions but only 2 as compared to the 18 for EQ1 and the 8 for DAoC.
"Possibly we humans can exist without actually having to fight. But many of us have chosen to fight. For what reason? To protect something? Protect what? Ourselves? The future? If we kill people to protect ourselves and this future, then what sort of future is it, and what will we have become? There is no future for those who have died. And what of those who did the killing? Is happiness to be found in a future that is grasped with blood stained hands? Is that the truth?"
WoW has a lot of faction pride when last I checked, but some people say that it can get out of hand. On top of Blizzcon sometimes feeling like Hordecon with the booing at Alliance leaning questions during Q&A and that Horde band (Corpsegrinder was a bad idea), I've heard rumors on the WoW forums about things going as far as Horde players spitting on Alliance players. I think WoW faction pride has been going down the wrong road over the years.
Anyways, I don't think faction pride has a ton of motivation on where players PvP and how they PvP. Faction pride only seems to happen after everything is said and done. Before I left WoW last year I PvPed at the gates of Orgrimmar with my buddies for a day or more every week or so. It felt like any other World PvP from the past. It was fun, but I did it for the fun and never once did I think about my faction pride while in combat. The only time I truely thought about faction pride was in the story. The story really robbed me of faction pride in Cataclysm as an Alliance player, but I continued to World PvP.
I have never played DAoC so i cannot comment on it except to say my friends who did play it are loyal to the core to their factions.
the most loyalty I have felt to a MMO entity is to my alliance in Eve. hell with eve it's so intense that i find myself mistrusting russians IRL. (eve players ya hear me)
i did find i did have a good deal of faction pride in wow though. to this day i would never make an alliance character, not even to check auction prices.
RIP Ribbitribbitt you are missed, kid.

Wow faction pride? Really, most people could care less about each other in their own faction. DAOC on the other hand, I could go on for hours about the realm pride it had, and even still does somewhat. Definately more then WoW has or ever will.
SWTOR Empire Vs Republic does not have the same feel nor the epicness that Vaniella WoW had with Horde vs Alliance, people loved their sides, people loved being alliance or horde, people loved horde because they were misunderstood, ugly, and outcast, people loved alliance because they were beautiful, and just as misunderstood as the horde.
When the alliance and Horde would clash in azeroth such as TM vs SS or Astrannar vs Xroads, people came from all over as soon as they heard the bell ring that their town was attacked and not just level 60s but every one from level 10 to 60 all joined an all out war to either advance or push back.
I remember one memorable moment when alliance had attacked the horde town in astrannar, I was all the way in STV, grinding on raptors, when I saw a huge fleet of horde all levels riding across the bridge ready to back up the small horde force taking on an even larger force of alliance. Just watching them in aw not even having a mount yet, I went into wolf form and followed the band of horde seeing an all out war in astrannar between alliance and horde.
Just seeing the horde numbers being small holding their own in astrannar until a larger force of horde arrived was such an epic moment and made me proud of being in the horde. Such a nerd moment but I could never feel these epic moments in another mmorpg today, not even in WoWs current state.
Going back, Original WoW was truly the best mmorpg ever. Its sad to see what WoW has become and what every mmorpg after has become. Theres no pride or epic moments in mmorpgs any more
Not to start a flame war but you are dillusional sir. I played from beta 2 (Undead) till jan of last year (quit cause cata was teh suq) and there was zero realm or faction pride. From obscene barrons chat to yo momma jokes and chuck norris quips. Not to mention people came and left at the drop of a dime to reroll the FOTM. Hell even blizzard instituded paid faction change to make it easier for people to find raiding guilds.
Nothing compares to the community and server prideof Asheron's call with total strangers assisting you on those ohh so fun corpse retrievals or the pride one had for their faction in DAoC. Most people detested and loathed the other side and wouldnt reroll on the opposite faction if their mom played it.
WoW might of done alot of things but faction pride sure as hell isnt one of them.

WOW had it in its very early days. I'd say much more so before battlegrounds were implemented. Starting with the first expansion it dwindled. Letting players create characters on both factions on PVP servers was probably the last heaving sigh.
Frankly, in games with open world PVP, I do see some merit in not allowing players to create more than one character on a server.
I would argue no other game had faction pride like Anarchy online. Doin faction pride since 2001.
I think a more accurate title of this thread would be "No other mmorpgs have faction pride since WoW" since that game brought millions of gamers who hate RPGs into the mmorpg scene and voted with their wallet for mmorpgs with less RPG and more FPS death matches. Doesnt matter about the lore of the faction, just which side wins more these days.
Games prior to the 8 million players who dont like RPGs setting foot in mmorpg land, faction pride was the norm. People actually stopped what they were doing when someone typed that other faction memebers were sighted...
I honestly wish half these players whos first mmorpg was wow actually set foot for a month in a game that came out before it, see what mmorpgs were like as far as the community and how they interacted...diffrent mechanics and less convienience programed into the game aside.
But yeah faction pride and light RP use to be the norm...i remember AO has OOC chat which stood for out of character, which was general chat. Also faction determined their server XP boost based on captured objectives...

lmao...vanilla wow didn't have this amazing faction pride you speak of. Sure some players were proud but alot of ppl was mad about faction imbalances just like the current situation swtor faces. Then there were the player that used to whine about racial abilities and how how the undead racial ability. As far as pride goes I think hands down the award goes to daoc!!! Its funny how not many players remember the issues wow vanilla faced. Yes, it was a good game but alot of fixes and patches were needed to make it the monster it is today.

I dunno. People were fiercely loyal to their home countries in Final Fantasy XI. It just wasn't a PvP oriented game.
Goddess bless San d'Oria!!
suprised no one has mentioned planetside, the faction pride was very strong in that too

Got to say DAoC as well...
Never had any faction loyalty in WoW... Played both sides equally much...
In DAoC I gave a few attempts to try other factions... but it failed... Once a Midgardian, always a Midgardian...
