Life After GW2... What if it Doesn't Live Up to the Hype?

Mythios11Mythios11 Member Posts: 129

I'm cautiously optimistic that GW2 is gonna be good but considering that most people are really banking on ArenaNet to deliver the best MMO we've seen in quite some time, what will the MMO space look like if GW2 falls on it's face?

SWTOR was the game that I had been looking forward to for years but after three weeks I had to cancel my sub and ultimately ended up back in WoW.

That being said, if GW2 does not live up to the hype, where will you end up?

Its kinda scary that after GW2 there isn't much on the horizon to be excited about (for me at least).  People talk about Tera and TSW but I don't have much hope for those games at this point.

Archeage if it ever gets released on the west

Otherwise I will play and get disappointed by 40k DMO

Here's the thing... HYPE is generally hyperbole created from buzz words and marketing stunts.  So far, from everything that ArenaNet has actually allowed us to see in gmae, it all lives up.

I'm not worried about this one.

Why do I write, create, fantasize, dream and daydream about other worlds? Because I hate what humanity does with this one.

BOYCOTTING EA / ORIGIN going forward.

Argue about how it did/didnt live up to the hype

Continue on with my daily life because I am in no way drawn into the hype and am not very excited for GW2 in the first place.

Even if GW2 lives up to the hype i'll probably find myself still playing TERA because I love that game.

    What he said^

If you market something, say like a Jedi pulling down a tree with her force powers, in CGI graphics too, then do dual weilding attacks slicing people in half with one stroke. And yeah, you can't do anything like that when you play- that's hype.

Showing in game footage, then people drooling over what they see, that's called excitement.

I'm impressed enough with what I've actually seen.  Whatever hype is loaded in top of that is irrelevant.  That said, I'm still going to look at other MMOs like Firefall and Wildstar (whenever they get released), but I'm confident that GW2 will be my main for quite some time.

continue with my other interests including EQ2.. maybe a bit of CO or DCUO thrown in. I dont hype it to begin with 8)

I find it interesting that so many negatives have come up about GW2 and it doesn't seem to phase anyone. Like the fact that we heard there were no mounts, no raids, no seemless world. That would usually have the community in an uproar around here. I can't decide if its the fact that this game is so over-hyped that some people just refuse to see the potential negatives or if people genuinely don't care about these things...

Personally, I have been around MMORPG.com long enough to know that people here ALWAYS over-hype every new game that comes out and are generally disappointed when they actually get to play it. I doubt this game will be any different, but I will definitely give it a shot to find out for myself.

Well, most MMOs don´t live up to the hype... and yet life goes on.

If GW2 doesn´t then I guess there is always WoDO and Class 4.

It's "free" so unless it's super horrible (which from viewing videos and reading lots of previews etc seem extremely unlikely) it will at least be worth the box price seemingly far more then other full priced mmo's with a sub I bought the recent years.

The next release that i'm interested in would be archeage.

The travel system in GW2 doesn't require mounts. This is taken from the first guild wars.

Anet already explained that Dynamic events ARE end game. Why would you raid with 20 people, when you can be apart of actual, world changing events with 200+ people?

Non-seamless world was taken from GW1, however, it was toned down by manitudes, making it much more open than the first, and MUCH more open than a game like SWTOR or Warhammer.

Anet has stuck to their guns ever since announcing GW2, that's why no one is phased by the information coming out.

And the endless wait for the perfect game that will most likely never exist will continue...

GW2 might be my last true shot at the MMORPG genre for a while.

I just can't go back to quest hub level grinders with all focus on end-game PvE and PvP. Raiding, instance farming, repeat battlegrounds.. been doing that for the past 8 years - I'm done.

I can't go back to meaningless sandbox grind fests with dated mechanics and systems.

If this game doesn't hold me over for quite a while...

Then I'll probably end up having to wait for the next truly different/innovation promising game. Who knows when that will be. Firefall? EQnext? Titan?

I feel marginally better about the marketing of GW2

Mainly because, unlike every MMO in the past 5 years, they don't need to release 5 Blur studio trailers in order to get people hyped up...

You really think games like SWTOR or Rift could run a successful marketing campaign if they used ONLY in game footage? Please

TERA has an impressive combat system and good graphics, so they could definatley get people interested.

Imagine if SWTOR tried to use THIS as a advertisment.

For me, if GW2 and/or TSW turn out to be crap, I will never touch another MMO as long as I live. Flight sims and Arma III is all I will play.

Honestly most of these arent such a big deal to most people, the world has some loading in between zones sure but at least it's not crazy instanced like GW1. Mounts are sort of pointless with the teleporting around after you have discovered an area and they would serve very little purpose.(perhaps some temporary mounts in WvWvW would be nice) Raids is just a word for dungeons with more people in it then usual and most of the difficulty of these are getting the people to do them, with open world bosses I don't think we need raids since raids are usually about defeating a super boss and you can do plenty of that in DEs.

The people that will be deceived by the game is people who didnt bother checking any info on the game and think there's still the holy trinity and the gear because over the time people have been brainwashed to think it's a staple of AAA mmos.

Hell my brother told me the game could never work without dps/heal/tank and since I played a whole lot more of MMos which didnt all use the trinity I had to explain to him how things can work differently.

Plenty of games out there to pick from. There is no reason to hype a game before its release or bash it after its released. You like the game ? Play it. Don't like the game?  Move on. It is not a do or die thing.

Yeah I'm thankful that for now (in a few weeks anyway) I'll have ME3 single player and awesome fun multiplayer to tide me over.

Seriously, ME3 multiplayer is freaking fun.

If GW2 doesnt work as well as I'm thinking it will, then I shall be retiring from the MMO genre altogether, Warhammer, FFXIV, and SWtor all failed for from my point of view, so this is the last time i'm going to try and get into another MMO.

As I posted in another thread, I don't understand these over hype concerns...every single person who played loves it, and ANet is keeping all promises. So what's with these paranoid what-if threads?

It isn't really hard to understand peoples doubt in MMOs these days..

The saddest part of games like SWTOR and WAR isn't that they failed, it's that the confidence of games like GW2 has to suffer as a consiquence
