Life after GW2... What if it doesn't live up to the hype?
hmm.. If they ever created a game that appealed to everyone that would be the end of the industry.. Different strokes for different folks, GW2 no exception..
There are going to be a very vocal group that strongly oppose and detest the game, thats a given.. Tne hype train that has been going since the original announcement some years back was created basically by the ruined hype trains of games past..
When people say they don't like a currently released game they ALWAYS use a future release as something to look forward to instead.. "I'm waiting for GW2..", as soon as it was announced it became that game that people would use as a reason not to like the current games..
I haven't grown up on this site, but I have been here enough to see that many games go through that cycle on this site.. I can probably pull up threads where people were "waiting for Age of Conan".. I may even be able to find some "I'm waiting for Vanguard" threads..
tl;dr: Nothing will EVER live up to the hype.. Hype is already heavily opinionated and since we all have our own opinions there is no way ever that one single game will invoke the exact same opinions from everyone who thought they wanted what they ended up getting..
Just be honest with yourself, it's NOT going to live up to the hype.
Maybe but I believe it will live up to my expectations.
Dont have expectations. Having expectations ruins everything in life. Keep an open mind and you will Always feel lucky no mather what reaches you. Having expectations means you only restrict yourself of how something can / is allowed to touch your inner.
I don't find it restrictive at all and I'll determine who or what touches my inner, thank you very much. Sounds like a world where everyone gets a medal because there are no expectations.
Sometimes things will fail to meet my expectations that will not define me. Further I can have expectation AND keep an open mind. Game-wise if it doesn't meet my expectation some how but provides something I didn't consider and is fun, I'm playing the game.
This world "full of medals" of what you speak is called, your consciousness. If you feel to have expectations, you can have them. There is nothing wrong with it. This was just my opinion, how I see the world comparing it - with and without having expectations.
Name me one situation where you have high had expectations and the expected thing succeeded. There is none. You will come to a point in your life, where you tell yourself: Damnit, I must artificialy lower my expectations. We all know this point. But have you ever concidered to let go of them? Trying doesnt hurt anyone, does it Just saying.
If you read reviews and watch such on youtube etc, you mostly wont keep your open mind. Your sub-conscious is already seduced. Most of the time. Thats how advertising works these days, btw: Working hand in hand with your habbits and let you the imagination of having everything in control
Phew that was offtopic - cheers on different opinions!
It would be very similiar to life before GW2. Am I excited for the game? you bet, but ill reserve my judgement for when i play it, minimize the possibility of disappointment.
Worst case scenario it blows and i'll play Tera or Archage instead.

If you really have lived a life in which you never have had high expectations that have been fulfilled i simply pity you.
I had high expectations in lots of moments in my life and a lot of them were fullfilled. Sex with my first love, Grades in college my best friend being very succesfull even though he is lazy and stupid.
I guess life is just kinder to some since ive never had the need to lower my expectations in life
It won't live up to the hype. SWTOR was hyped this much and all people can do now is QQ about it. That said, my expectations are firmly in check. I expect a fairly pedestrian fantasy sandbox. Probably worth the box price, but not the second coming.
At this point, I'm not pleased with any MMO I'm currently playing so I'm not expecting anything revolutionary from GW2; my expectations should be exceeded with ease. If even my expectations don't get met, I'll end up going back to WoW or tiring myself out with F2P (Ya rite) MMOs until something else comes up.
I believe, we as gamers get too cought up in hype, to realize many of our choices are affected by the wrong opinions. Time we start thinking for ourselves and stop letting hype affect us so much.
Here's the thing... HYPE is generally hyperbole created from buzz words and marketing stunts. So far, from everything that ArenaNet has actually allowed us to see in gmae, it all lives up.
I'm not worried about this one.
What he said^
If you market something, say like a Jedi pulling down a tree with her force powers, in CGI graphics too, then do dual weilding attacks slicing people in half with one stroke. And yeah, you can't do anything like that when you play- that's hype.
Showing in game footage, then people drooling over what they see, that's called excitement.
Who gets hyped over a cgi trailer, thinking they can do that stuff in a game? Many companies use CGI in this way, why take a stab at a one certain company over it?

Im getting tired of reading this type of thing.
The "hype" regarding GW2 is unique in that its based on mechanics that have literally shown to be already in the game build. Working and ready. So its there. People get excited about that. And then we call it "hype". Its not hype in the traditional sense, its excitement over existing, real, already programmed, game mechanics that have been displayed, and shown.
Meanwhile there are gaming news sites being able to get in and play it, such as mmorpg.com. Gameinformer also just posted a gushing preview from what they had tried.
Here's the point. Those saying "It will never live up to the hype" have NOTHING to base that on. At all. They compare it to Swtor. Swtor has nothing to do with GW2. Make a real valid point. But they cant. Meanwhile those excited for the game have real, and proven aspects of the game to point too.
One side, the "wont live up to the hype" side, have nothing but useless conjecture and opinion to toss around. The other side, "This game looks very exciting!" side, has real and tangible facts to back up exactly what they are excited about. Period.
I find it interesting that so many negatives have come up about GW2 and it doesn't seem to phase anyone. Like the fact that we heard there were no mounts, no raids, no seemless world. That would usually have the community in an uproar around here. I can't decide if its the fact that this game is so over-hyped that some people just refuse to see the potential negatives or if people genuinely don't care about these things...
Personally, I have been around MMORPG.com long enough to know that people here ALWAYS over-hype every new game that comes out and are generally disappointed when they actually get to play it. I doubt this game will be any different, but I will definitely give it a shot to find out for myself.
thats all a + fore me outside of seemless world but i dont care about seemless long as theres not a ton of loading

Generally when people talk about hype in this way they're referring to hype generated by players, not really marketing. There are different levels of hype generated by players. At the common level it's just people being excited about the possibilities of a new product. This is the most typical form of hype, trolls tend to blow it out of proportion, they portray this hype as meaning everyone who feels this way is blowing a game up to be the second coming. See TOR...
The less normal form of hype is the type where people actually think it's the second coming. This is a little more rare, but it does happen, it could be argued that we see more of this type for GW2 than others, but I find it understandable, because the possibility of something different in this genre. It's just that this type of hype is impossible to live up to. You can't act as though it doesn't exist though or isn't happening at some level, it does and it is.

I will be playing GW 2 with friends which is rare as they they dont normally play mmos but as it has no subscription( something they seem to be scared of ) they decided to join me. So I kinda see this as my friendly? mmo for jumping in a few times a week to have a laugh. Otherwise I don't see it being the most amazing ground breaking mmo man has ever seen but i imagine it will still be great fun. On the side of subscription mmo's i decided to play tera to tide me over until TSW and eventually Archeage comes out, if both fail to impress then I will hang up my hat and call it aday for mmo's as I hardly have the time to paly them these days and when I do I want it to be worth it.

You're arguing that people can't have different opinions about a topic. That somehow because you've seen some game features that makes the hype more valid. I disagree.
Certainly there are features in GW2 that represent incremental innovation. But it is a fact that some people have been suggesting that this game's impact will be transformative on the genre. I do not believe that will be the case. My opinion on that matter is not subject to factual refute. It's an opinion. I respect your right to be hyped about GW2. I will be buying the product and made that decision over a year ago.
However, I will not make this game into more than it is. It's a video game. It might be fun. It will almost certainly be worth the $60 I'll probably pay for it. But it's still going to be a MMORPG. Which means that there will be no end of complaints on their boards within weeks of launch claiming Arenanet failed them. The hype will deflate in the presence of an actual game with all the warts and bugs that a new release always has. I will not be upset, but I suspect many of the people thinking this game will be the best thing since sliced bread will be.

I think, and rightly so, that the language used is completely wrong.
Hype is promotion based on misdirection or out right lying about someting to increase the product. Ie not really letting you peak inside the box.
Excitement =/= hype in this case, it is based on what has been already revealed.
Personally, I have been around MMORPG.com long enough to know that people here ALWAYS over-hype every new game that comes out and are generally disappointed when they actually get to play it. I doubt this game will be any different, but I will definitely give it a shot to find out for myself.

News flash: It won't live up to the hype NO GAME EVER DOES. SO stop being stupid and setting yourself up for massive dissapointment. This happens every game release, then fanbois whine and complain, until you try the game itself, expect it to probally suck like most other mmo's. Don't believe the hype, stay neutral till you try it, I am thinking of getting gw2, but so far nothing it has atm that we know of is really all that impressive, though it does look like a better game than swtor at least, not that its hard, most f2p titles blow swtor out of the water gameplay wise. Honestly the only mmo that looks decent thats on the horizen to me is phantasy star online 2, because its going to be way diffrent than the typical mmo's, all you have to do is see a vid of the combat and you can tell its much diffrent than most wow-like games that are out/coming out.
But yeah this happens like every major title release, people get all hyped up, the game comes out, then peoiple relize its pretty craptastic compared to what it was hyped up to be, then they get pissy.

The greater the hype the worse the fall.
I will just continue training and school.
Not that worried about a MMO since we haven't seen anything worth the box price since WOW, and I hate what the game is today.
