I'd challenge you to name an mmorpg that isn't like this. A released one, developers can claim whatever during development circle. Only one I can think of is A tale in the desert (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Tale_in_the_Desert)
One of the reasons the combat speed and movement speed are a little bit slower than say, Dark Souls or other single player games, is the latency. They want the game to be balanced and have a larger audience, and the sad truth is that most MMO gamers are running crap rigs, with crap internet. And honestly it seems to be well paced to me, its not to fast button mashing contest, and its not to slow. The combat is very engaging IMO, and if you have a brain and some hand eye coordination you can really shine, doing things like soloing bosses. Thats another problem with the MMO market, most of the players are just steps above 100 IQ, with little to no coordination, and when they can't spam macros/target of target, they don't like the combat. Each to his own I guess.
I agree and actually love the speed of the combat. I actually feel like I've been in a fight and can recover if I make a mistake. It feels like an actual battle over just "whoever shoots first wins".
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
Well, maybe yes, maybe no. If he's trying to single out Tera as the boring cousin in the family, then he's wrong, because the whole family is boring according to the criteria set by him.
However, I don't think that there is something inherently wrong with the system. I don't want to see alterations for the sake of alterations. In an FPS game I expect to, you know, shoot people. Putting those mini games with cars etc. worsen the experience for me.
So it's a tricky one. I don't want the basic formula to change into something unrecognisable, it was entertaining for years and still is (for the most part). GW2 seem to be on a good road. The kill quests are there, the fetch quests are there, I bet the escort quests are there too. They're just presented in a different way than what we've been used to. SW:TOR tried to differentiate as well, but pushed the MMORPG too much into the single game territory. So in this regard, I hope that GW2 succeeds where SW:TOR failed (for me), but I don't have high hopes that they'll deliver anything beyond a glorifed WAR dynamic event.
Better to be pleasantly surprised than the opposite I suppose.
As for Tera, in theory it is an equally good game to Rift. Unfortunately the timing is not as good as Rift's, it was developed by non westerners in a style that alienate a portion of people and has combat that, like AoC's, is potentially a bit too different than what is considered norm for an MMORPG.
Bottom line, unlike what the OP claims, the game is good. Or at least equally good to any other MMORPG in the market, having its share of pros and cons. Will people stick around to see if they actually like it? Most probably will not for the reasons mentioned above. And of course, the vendetta between NCsoft and Tera's developers that is forcing a premature GW2 marketing campaign doesn't seem to help either.
This game actually is pretty boring. It's a pretty game, with fun animations and cool attacks, the combat system is alright but over all it leads to encounters feeling sort of the same after a while. The character creator is sort of a joke, it looks way better in the videos than it actually seems to be in the game, the difference made by any of it is slim to none. And most importantly it's an old fashioned MMO, and their timing is terrible with it.
People can say "SW:TOR failed" all they want, but if 1.7-2 million active subs = failed than rofl @ what you think TERA will make, and be considered a "success". Because it won't be half that, and it won't retain a majority of what it does take in like SW:TOR has, and GW2 probably will (although I find it hard to compare any game to GW2 due to it's lack of subscription, the measure of success is totally different.) Overall it really is kind of a "boring" game. I've been beta testing it, I have fun for maybe 30 minutes but I find myself wanting to log back into SW:TOR, or play ME3 multiplayer instead. I had high hopes for TERA for years, I think it'll have it's specific demographic and will be a success within that. But I also won't be surprised if it's f2p within a year. I think they'd actually be smart to launch as "Buy to Play", make their money that way and maybe charge for expansions etc like GW2 will. Then it would have some sort of head start on the direction the market seems to be headed.
Oh, it's inevitable that it'll go F2P hybrid. All MMOs will see that transition sooner or later (a good portion already has).
The sad part about SW:TOR is that they wrapped a single player game into a couple coop features and mass sold it to all those star wars fans or generally people tired with fantasy. Tera by design (open world, smooth engine, world PvP, etc.) is so much more an mmorpg and is offering so much more than SW:TOR, but I doubt it'll will be anything more than a niche purchase or a time killer until TSW or GW2 arrives. It is kind of sad really to see that it's not quality that sells but marketing, unfortunately.
TERA has a good combat system i'll admit but i really don't see the appeal of the killtenrats or the end game rat race or the endless gear treadmill. Those things are old and should be shunned by everyone here.
I haven't been keeping up with TERA: when is it suppose to release? Maybe it is good for me seems like a skill based rather than tab-target combat system? I'll have to check it out. The more I found out about GW2 the less excited I got to the point I'm not really following it anymore.
So are GW2 (which I've already lost interest in) and Archage and TERA the only decent PVP games to look forward to over the next year or is there anything else on the way as well? I have to start figuring out where I'm going to land next or if I have to fall back to an existing MMO...
GW2 will be the only one with decent PvP. The other two will be decided by gear.
Shows exactly how much you know about either games.

Sure... if by decent you mean Esport instanced garbage and carebear PVP.
In AA i will PVP for X territory, siege a castle and have guild vs guild naval PVP.
But wait! in GW2 you have a DODGE skill!! gear doesn't matter! rofl gear doesn't matter because there isn't real PVP, only carebear snorefest agains't random servers = yawn, you don't even use your real character in PVP lol
Gear isn't the problem, if i want fair/boring PVP, i can always play 34545 MOBAS or FPS with better gameplay and higher skill ceilling.
"Esport with tournaments is for hardcore pvp'rs that want to be competitive. Openworld PVP with ganking and griefing is for casuals that just wants their pvp mixed with pve from time to time." otacu

The person asked about MMO PvP, the only one worth talking about is GW2 as it is somewhat skill based. I love how you used the word 'fair' because it shows that you acknowledge what my point was... TERA and AA PvP will be about time investment, not skill.
I'm not claiming that MMOs are the pinacle of gaming 'skill' but it is what it is, and GW2 will be the best of the bunch - hence 'decent'.
I just checked some TERA videos and I saw super hot, almost-naked female chracters in armor that can only be classified as erotic lingerie.
Than I saw those very funny and cute, animal-like race-things, that bounce up and down while riding a horse, or fly around while swinging a sword twice the size of themselfs, and it all looks hilarious.
I also saw dynamic combat with some crazy-huge weapons, manual aiming and some kind of combo system.
Who cares about grind or repetetive quests, the game looks fun and I'm pre-ordering it!

Does GW2 have naval PVP? nope
And what about sieges agains't player built castles? nope

Thanks man for taking your time machine back from the future to tell us how UNRELEASED games will be! What would we do if people like you didn't do this to tell us things that no one could actually have any proof about now and be sure of.

i hate to burst your bouble but all you are saying is false .
and this comes from someone who just got done playing swtor and was playing it since the beta. i can assure you that Tera is way way more fun of a mmo than Swtor.
you say Tera is pretty boring. then again, it most be pretty boring for you! so your opinion is only valid as that, your personal opinion. there are tons of people having a blast with Tera. it is obviously not a game for you. but dont worry i got good news for you. you can still Subscribe yourself to Swtor, old fashioned MMO equals Fun. while what you call innovative, new and revolutionary to the MMO genre is usually a boredom paradise. so thanks god for the old fashioned MMO.
For $15 a month this game is pretty terrible. It lacks so much in chacater customization, the game feels very generic, the only thing it has going for it is the combat which even that isn't so great, and the game overall just feels like it'd suite better for a f2p game.
Just my view of the game, don't see Tera Online lasting that long at all, much like swtor did.
people on this website might trash swtor as if it failed, but from what i have read, it has been very succesful. i'm sure it already turned profit, just from the 1st payment cycle and box sales.
(sidenote- i have never played, nor ever plan on playing swtor. it does not look like a game for me. i'm just saying what information i have gathered concerning your comment.)
people can gauge success with MMO's differently if they want, but at the end of the day, it's only about profit, which i am positive swtor created. this is not said in defense of the concept. it is just the truth.
PS- i have no opinion on how good swtor is, because i have never played it.
Ahh this is so nice, Glad that most of the people on this website will not be playing.
PVP is great and idk what everyone is complaining about. THe other thing GW2 has is dynamic events, TERA will even Release 4 Way serer fights soon. Now the graphics in TERA blow gw back to its mother's womb and I dont see why ANYONE would even compare.... You are the same people who worshipped Warhammer and SWTOR in its Closed BETAs and once they came out you all called em SHIT and fail games ( dont get me wrong SWTOR seems to be successful from the numbers I see).
Now The GvG alone in TERA already owns any kind of Trashy Battleground GW2 has to offer. Add in deathmatches which can be set up any time any where and a good Political system as well as more pvp options etc. Don't compare GW2s PVP to TERA buddy, PVE might be better but PVP In TERA is HEAPS better.
Didn't realize that Sieges and Naval combat = hard core XXC PVP
Just got done playing the TERA Closed beta. I'm so sad... I can't wait for launch now...
Just pre ordered... havn't slept in 3 days, such an amazingly fun game. PVP, PVE, its the whole package.
Edit: Also I didn't realize gear some how helps you figure out where to move to move out of abilities and such...

Need Naval battle in Tera = , server was about to go down me and my friend try to finish some repeat stacked up for next beta and this archer keep harrasing us and than swimming in to the water -.- and my friend plays from brazil so his ping doesn't help at all XD. got him down to like 3.5% hp when he swim away and i leash him back and the archer lags before i can land a hit and swim away again Q_Q
Gears wise it only matters if there is a lvl difference, but honestly yp cap in 2 week to 1 month so hardly matters once your all capped.

Because its star wars. -.- the game is doing well in term of numbers is because its star wars. The whole thing has so much fan behind its almost impossible to not turn a profit now matter how shitty the game is.

Ya the death matches are nice, good way to guild to prative anything form 2v2 to 10v10 or even uneven matchs. You can also fight for money too by betting so its pretty cool. good for pratice or real uses. And i can't wait for 4 way server war going to be sooooo crazy considering how crazy guild war already is XD
The only way Tera could improved is make more then one unique system, the omly unique system that they made was the improved combat to where it's more actiony like vindictus, and how each and every race has a different type of control and uniqueness, that is the only good thing however it's just enough when you still have generic things that been neglated of improvement like the quest system, the crafting (that's need a big upgrade), making guild have the ability to gain special perks, a guild hall, a unique experiance system that determines it's level, and other things to make this game better. This is what is needed to attact more people and resolves most of the problems that we are having.
The key problem with character customization is it's too centralized around the face/head features for a lot of races. You can't control character size. You can't have fun creating funhouse-mirror characters or voluptuous defenders of truth.
I've been in all three betas and I am feeling kind of burnt out with the character wipes
Character wipes??? my guess is you have never played the beta at all.
in Tera Beta 1-3 they haven't wiped any characters at all, when Tera goes to Open Beta characters made before in Beta 1-5
will get wiped. and characters in open Beta will not get wiped at all.

Well yeah other than the combat its your basic run of the mill themepark MMO..
But because of the combati t actually makes it better than all the other run of the mill themepark MMOs..

Lol, even the lock ons are completely dodgeable, some people just don't get the concept of anticipating your enemies next attack...
Anticipate!!! In an mmorpg!?!?!?! What ?!? you mean i don't just press 1 2 3 1 5 6 3 7 2 1 0 3 5 9 3 in that order every single time any more? I have to think? OMG BLASPHEMY!!!!! HACKS They dodged my lock on skill!!!
Ok on a more serious note, i need to learn to block sleep. Got to find healer to pratice locking down.

Sure... if by decent you mean Esport instanced garbage and carebear PVP.
Openworld PVP with ganking and griefing is for casuals that just wants their pvp mixed with pve from time to time."

Only if you like instanced garbage and carebear PVP.
AA actually has open world PVP (lol), and things worth fighting for, unlike GW2 which is just another themepark with battlegrounds and fights agains't random servers.
Does GW2 have naval PVP? nope
And what about sieges agains't player built castles? nope

Yeap, we'll see AA in like 3 years. Have fun waiting for that.
Thanks man for taking your time machine back from the future to tell us how UNRELEASED games will be! What would we do if people like you didn't do this to tell us things that no one could actually have any proof about now and be sure of.
TERA is the first true skill based online game.
Genre creating game here.
i hate to burst your bouble but all you are saying is false .
and this comes from someone who just got done playing swtor and was playing it since the beta. i can assure you that Tera is way way more fun of a mmo than Swtor.
you say Tera is pretty boring. then again, it most be pretty boring for you! so your opinion is only valid as that, your personal opinion. there are tons of people having a blast with Tera. it is obviously not a game for you. but dont worry i got good news for you. you can still Subscribe yourself to Swtor, old fashioned MMO equals Fun. while what you call innovative, new and revolutionary to the MMO genre is usually a boredom paradise. so thanks god for the old fashioned MMO.
people on this website might trash swtor as if it failed, but from what i have read, it has been very succesful. i'm sure it already turned profit, just from the 1st payment cycle and box sales.
Fucking sleep, gets me every time. ;(
