So far I haven't seen any incentive to PVP or GVG. That is the only thing I don't like so far but PvP rules havent been set and Guild Perks are still in works so I assume there will be better GVG additions. Wasn't too happy to hear about battlegrounds since I don't like instanced lobby pvp at all.
The combat in this game makes it already a step forward in mmorpg's with open world(all dragon nest,vindictus,c9 shouldn't be compared with Tera they are Instanced, same shit all over again).
Why? open world =/= better game. DN, Vindictus and C9 have faster combat which is way more fun IMO. To dismiss the combat cause of their simple design choice of the world is stupid. TERA's combat is fitted better for newbies to action style games but from someone like myself who plays action games and fighting games normally, it's a borefest.
open world = better game for me because I can feel what i'm part of the world and go everywhere I want on the world with my feet or my horse and further places with a transport system and explore new places different from the others(Like Vindictus is recycling the same places for like 10 missions on every boat).
Yeah, because open world games don't reuse texture packs and models for different open world areas, do they?. Open world is a waste of time IMO. It looks nice, yes, but in the end it's only a place just to kill mobs and thats it. Exploration in an MMO is a silly concept IMO as well cause no one is going to care at all once you out level an area. Vindictus just streamlined it, while it did get old to see reused areas at points, it's not like I cared after I outleveled the area and went to a new area which was different.
Hrmm looks like my opinion is entirely at odds with your opinion in about every way. Open world is very important to a lot of gamers. Honestly I won't like an mmorpg unless it has FFA PVP in an open world. I hate battlegrounds and never gave 2 shits about any sort of pve content. I hate instancing like SWTOR since it takes away from the FFA PVP and provides absolutely no benefit in return except to protect the weak and cowardly from their enemies. I also disagree with you about self rooting in combat. My favorite action rpg console game is Dark Souls which has such a mechanic. It slows the combat down a bit but also makes it very tactical instead of every just running around like a crazy chicken spamming attacks repeatedly. Dark Souls is the best console experience i have had, and Tera uses a similar combat style which is a good thing.

Deal with what Sector? I'm just comparing nuts and bolts with you. You can't list your opinion ("obviously flawed") as fact and then point out my arguments are only my opinion. Just because you don't want to play it doesn't mean you need to talk it down to validate your decision.
Your lack of response regarding how many skills other action games have is telling. It's a different playstyle, that's my point. Could it be improved? Sure, anything can. Should it be like DN? No.
Like I said anyways, TERAs combat is not slow lol, depending on the circumstances at least.
I like the speed too.
Any faster and I wonder how many would be able to keep up with what's going on. People need to remember that in TERA: what's happening on your screen is important! Watch the mobs, watch how they move, react.
Exactly, it's made for newbies to action games. I find it funny that people keep putting up videos of end game. Yeah, end game where your gear and enchants give you attack and movement speed boosts. They should increase the base speed and not need speed boosts in late game.
When you post your high level BAM solos and hardmode videos then I guess you could talk. Until then you can`t really say anything to discredit TERAs difficulty.
Steparu has been playing TERA for a year and just the other day I watched him wipe about 12 times in a dungeon, I left the stream at that point.
lol, What a poor excuse. Make the game more fun to even get to high level and then we can talk. The whole "well, it gets better at endgame" is such a WoW excuse that it's not even funny. And I did see Steparu's stream where he wiped a bunch of times, on a hard mode dungeon, where the boss blinds the party if you don't take him out quick enough once he hit's 30% HP. That had nothing to do with skill, it was they didn't have enough DPS. So, lol on the failed point.
You forgot about the cannon and mirrors parts as well. xD
But anyways no I didn`t fail on my point, he wiped twice on the first boss, once on the second, skipped the third and wiped once on the fourth before even getting to the last boss. Also he wiped like two times on the last boss before even getting to the darkness phase.
Also maintaining enough DPS takes skill, you need to take risks and try to land as many attacks as possible in between the bosses attacks without dying, because if you die you are guaranteed to lose unless you get rezzed very quickly.
Half the times they failed on the darkness phase was because half the party was dead during it, of course they wouldn`t have enough DPS.
I can't even remotly think of what to post coz the past 3 pages has been well pretty much people going against each other's opinons.....
For me i like Tera's combat its a good pace like monster hunter and god eater burst. I personally don't like combat to be any faster because than its not about stratgy any more and all about the twitch. Which in turn becames well freaken gaitor hero in a way where your just memorizing keys and relying on your muscle reflex. We all know game like street fighter and such it all about muscle reflex. Basically you play so much your hand would mobe vefore your brain even tell it to move and pretty much thats how you get good at the game. Some people like it i don't.
I mean in the end it all comes down to preference, not really good or bad just what you like or don't like. So freaken lighten up guys XD

I played TERA one weekend, lots of hours, so what do I know...
First, I admit I did not put such a strong, critical measure towards TERA like, say SWTOR or LOTRO. I am a Tolkien and Star Wars fan, so that of course made me look more closely and these games. WIth Tera I feel more lenient, since the setting is nothing I know and felt for before. I know it isn't triple AAA league, so I won't measure it that way.
That said, I had a good time that weekend. The movement combat was a bit tricky for me, but it does feel refreshing and new to me. The world scenery was nothing short of breathtaking, I loved the many details and the textures which were really good IMO. Also the sort of light hearted humorous approach of some races, the nice and really detailled animations of the various races and how they walk, fight, ride asf. really was something with "soul". Something light hearted and lovely.
I don't think TERA is a heavy weight game and not too serious. But so far it looked like some good fun to me.

There's not a lot that separates TERA from your standard Korean grinder outside of a unique combat system and quick, westernized leveling. I kinda go back and forth with my support of TERA, but after playing three closed beta tests, I think TERA will be just another flash in the pan. The graphics, while still nice, aren't as impressive as the screenshots would have you believe, and people are probably going to get bored with the game once the combat stops feeling special.

you dont need to play a game if you got more then a year in hours worth of actual gameplay movies of real players to know AA is the most inovative and largest mmorpg to hit the market since the dawn of mmo gaming.

Glorious looking although not quite to my taste, I love the asian artstyle but this is a stretch to far for me.
Combat is fun and at least keep syou on your toes even the NPC's will try and Benny Hill you.
Theres just a bit to much of it like UI, looting etc that feels like the 10 a penny cheap asian F2P that really puts me off it though.
I also think I have been somewhat spoiled by the one thing SWTOR had going for it and voice over I found myself oft clicking quest givers and waiting for them to start to talk then realising oh wait I have to read the text.
In short if it was F2P I'd probably play it but as a sub I wont which may seem odd as a sub is a pittance in the grand scheme of things its just a perspective thing.
Tera looks nice and has no lag for me, the combat is pretty cool and feels different from the rest of the mmorpg I played.
The quests in Tera are very boring and require you to kill certain amount of mobs from area A to area B to area C and that makes it feel like you're grinding and not questing really.
I had fun untill 20 since everyone was saying the fun starts at 20 but all I saw from 20-22 (current level is 22 i'm almost 23) is the same monotonic quest grind that I have been doing since level 1.
Aside from combat Tera feels like every other korean mmorpg.
Things I don't like at all are: loot drops down like a free2play game and you hit F to pick it up, repeatable quests start by themselves and you have to manualy abandon them if you don't want to do repeats, it's a mmorpg and since has 1 path guided by quests they separated the servers into channels so you don't have to fight over mobs you need but that imo is a bad approach cause you miss the point of being a mmorpg. Separating the servers into channels means the game has 1 starting area and 1 path to follow so means they were lazy and formed a world very generic and simple that usually single player games have. A good mmorpg to me is one that let the player choose the path and not being forced to go into a one way path and that was the reason I never played Aion more then level 20. Aside from combat this game is Aion 2.

EME has already stated they will take the channels away at some point if it makes sense. At the moment they are there so that when the game goes live people aren't playing slide shows due to everyone starting at level 1. As weeks and months go by you might see the channels disapear altogether. Other campanies over server their games to combat the initial rush only to merge them or have low pops. There is a method to the madness
Aside from the storyline putting every race through the same area for a reason my friend (who won't play TERA) had an interesting perspective. He thought it wasn't so bad because if every race had it's own starting area around thier capitol there would more useless areas after leve 10. By placing everyone in the same path to a certain point those areas can be more useful to the players later on. When you're level 15 open your world map and take a look at the small spot you've explored so far.
I agree that it's boring if quests run you in a line. I've been told by a EME employee however that early on you get forks in the road that take you through alternate areas:

Yes, the game is that big and at level 17 you are just on the edge of several new areas. The quest line does a great job of getting you to explore each area and is recommended. As you begin to progress throughout the game you will soon leave Lumbertown and the adventures you go on will traverse greater distances and there will be multiple areas for you to level. Stray too far and you may find that the mobs you encounter will lead to your death rather swiftly.
Personally I'll be doing just the storyline and rich reward quests. There are just to many, at least early on. I'll be reporting back after this weekend on how it goes.
Originally posted by airborne1312 I just pre-ordered my copy in the uk so will be playing the beta weekends before i make up my mind. Anyone played it already and thinks its sh1t? Give the reasons please. I just want an unbiased opinion since im getting in the 'hype' mood. I played wow on and off for 7 yrs but its boring now and holds no interest. I tried rift, age of conan, warhammer, SWTOR which all failed to inspire me. TERA looks promising but so did SWTOR. The open world is a big draw for me and the pvp. The lush visuals and new combat system too. Is the game polished like wow? Please no wow h8ers frothing at the mouth. WOW is but boring for me now but it was very well made and playable. Bring on the negative tera boys please...i want to hear the other side of the coin.
I've played all of 2 hours.
I made a Honey Badger guy and he's a mage and I sling fire. I have to aim to sling the fire.
That is FUN! The controls are very DCUO, but I feel they're a lot tigther. Tho' I haven't tried a melee character yet.
I'm on a now aging machine. (3.0 dual core Intel processor, 4 gigs of ram, a 1gb mem 9800 GTX) This game is making my machine show her age at times with a little lag in the animation and some odd load anomolies. I like that for a Korean game there were enough video options to change and get 40 fps pretty solid out of the game while giving up some light and shadow effects.
The questing at the beginning sucks. I've done 3 quests and decided I wasn't going to do any more for the rest of the day unless some group quests pop up and people are looking. I grinded and leveled just fine blowing crap up. I enjoyed that.
So, first impression is pretty nice. It's a good looking game even scaled down, the game play is actiony, but the questing.... Well always sucks at the beginning of (yet another) MMO. SO maybe they'll pick up?
That's my unbiased review. Not paid by anyone, just snagged a key from the front page of this site. Who bans me pretty often so no favor to them. LoL
I used to play MMOs like you, but then I took an arrow to the knee.
Before betas I was excited. During first beta, I thought, this could be good. During the second beta I almost fell asleep. I tried to llike it, I really did, just didn t feel like it would offer me anything I haven t played or could still play. The combat alone became boring to me. To each their own, but the only negative I can give you is, uninspired and boring.
I don't know how people are saying this game is boring? Compared to what? Rift? SW:TOR? WoW?
I can understand if you are a fan of click based combat, and don't mind games that look like they were made 5 years ago, then Tera would probably not inspire you.
The whole rooting animation is only really a nuisance to the Archer class, and I can see it being annoying. But please don't try to pass if off that playing a Ranger in the click target based MMOs is anymore skillful. clicking on your target and spamming one macro and hitting every arrow perfectly from 30m away is not skill. Tera's combat is fun because the combat requires more skill to play it. But of course the majority of the complainers here didn't bother to play it past the starting Area. Try fighting that level 20 Spider BAM and telling me this game's action combat is boring.
I'm not really concerned about the opinions of players that only invested 4 hours into the game and found it boring, and neither should any of you.

There's merit to what you say; but first impressions go along way when there's as much competition out there as there is.
I've got 4 hours in and my impression gets better honestly. The AI is picking up, the moves and hits are feeling more solid. I love the combat.
I do hate the questing system still and not an instance in site; considering the community in right now tho' I don't think it'd be very fun. Wish I had talked some guildies into joining with me. This game has potential to be a PVP rockstar.
I'd sub right now if they had a "straight to pvp" option like Guild Wars 1 had back in the day.
I used to play MMOs like you, but then I took an arrow to the knee.
Ok I played alot of MMO's now and beta tested this during first free weekend and enjoyed it some did the second one and could even stand it but continued to play have 2 characters ones a warrior with a two-handed sword but got him to there cap for the last weekend and stoped and then started on my dragon kin cleric and had fun because I played him for combat only and it was fun but still didnt really enjoy myself I play throught the instances they where ok but only the second one I did seemed group based and was not hard at all. The big bosses in the world are hard and fun some of the elite mobs where a blast because they where a challange but other then that I don't think I will geet it and will wait for something better and more fun to me.

Did everything you said, and yes it s still boring. Combat alone doesn t make a game and , in this game thats all it really has. It gets boring fast. This is of course my opinion, but I find the game completely boring.
I completely agree with some in this thread. It s not a very good game. Linear beyond linear. The combat is more of the same level after level after level. Yes I did get off the starter area. Everyone has opinions of course, mine is this is a low for MMOs this year.
I played this weekend and found the game spororific. The game gives you too few skills to start off with, and it's far too easy. The quests are poorly written, it's voice acting is horrendous, and the cinematic question presentation was either unnecessary or boring. Despite its fantastical setting, I was never truly impressed by what I saw. The game has a very nice utilization of the Unreal Engine, but somewhat interestingly, it's very difficult to see the detail of the creatures you're fighting. This is actually very unfortunate.
The art style also seems to be a little bit all over the place - kind of like it doesn't have its own identity. The skimpy clothing get annoying as well. The UI feels sloppy, and the game, at least early on, is as linear as The Old Republic [major turn off for me].
I was hoping I would enjoy it, but I didn't. I don't think it's a bad game, but I also don't find it particularly enthralling.

Personally I'll be doing just the storyline and rich reward quests. There are just to many, at least early on. I'll be reporting back after this weekend on how it goes.
Edit: For clarity, sorry for the wall.
Just not worth my time anymore.

Compared to any action based combat game in the last 10 years ... Last time I checked there were more then 1 genre of video game, sir. =P
Also, if I wanted to fight BAMs then I will just play Vindictus for free or if the rumors are true, I will wait for Dark Souls on the PC.
