Except people got enthousiast about the dozens of facts and the reports of people like me that actually got handson experience. While in this case the free speakers obviously only have one or two facts and lots of emotions to base their plea on.
If you have hands on experience and enjoyed your experience then I think that's great. Maybe your opinions formed from hands on is different from the opinion someone else might get from a hands on experience. It doesn't make their experience more correct nor yours. It's subjective to the person either through hands on experience as you say or in the case of no opportunity of experience, reading of what is deemed "facts". No one can judge their own enjoyment of a game from someone else's experiences. We take reviews with a grain of salt, we take Beta impressions with a grain of salt, we join them together with "facts" which are written down game mechanics and we form an opinion on these things and hope we are right. Sometimes we are, sometimes we aren't. That's the gaming industry, that's the movie industry and that's the music industry. You could go further and say that's just life too. My favourite holiday destination might bore you to tears. My favourite restaurant might make you hurl. Doesn't mean that my opinion that for me it is great is wrong. If someone says I think X game would be great "if" it had this or that insteead of "this feature" it doesn't mean they are trashing it. They are expressing an opinion. And seriously I have seen plenty of GW2 fans trashing other games in other sections on this site too. It seems to happen when any MMO with great expectations is on it's way. I don't think that's going to change ever. And the fact remains this section of mmorpg.com isn't invite only thus it is open to comment from anyone. Same with other game forums on this site. Plenty are hoping for success if only for the sake of the genre as a whole, even those who aren't going to play it for whatever reasons they have chosen.
P.S. Just to add, yes there probably are some "trolls" here at times. There are such in all sections in this site if you look around. But I've also seen people with genuine opinions or concerns completely shot out of the water for even dare questioning a thing. That stifles debate which is not cool and gives a bad rep to the future community as a whole.
@aesperus Im not convinced that companies dont in fact like the drama between fanbois and trolls. Look how much attention that particular fight drummed up for Darkfall for example. Like they say, bad PR is better than no PR.
That's partially what I was implying; though if you dare mention that on these boards people go into an uproar. Running a smear campaign isn't exactly a new strategy, so it's not out of the realm of possibility. And, you can hire people to raid social media sites nowadays for very cheap (I have a few friends in marketting that do it on a regular basis, generally to promote a product instead of deface another). It costs them almost nothing in the scheme of things, and yet the results are phenomenal.
However, in this case, I don't think Anet would want this kind of 'bad press'. Sure it's opening people on to the game, however it's doing it by severely distorting the facts. Given that most people don't want to take the time to make sure they have their facts right, that's a very bad thing.
There are very few development studios these days that can release a product that people will buy regardless. Contrary to what certain people seem to think here, Anet isn't one of them. If they had announced GW2 as touting a similar system to say WoW, for example, no one would buy it. Wouldn't even matter how good of a job they did with it. It would be a ghost town.

Hanging out in a forum, about a game you dont even like, and you expect us to take you seriously?
There are a number of games here on MMORPG that I dont care to ever play, and you wont see one single post from me on those forums, because there is no reason too.
I get where your coming from, but 'Viral' is a pretty neutral word tbh.. it really just refers to how the information is spread, not whether it is positive or negative.
True, but marketting is the promotion of ones product. If they did something like 'this is why SWTOR is so much better than GW2!' that would be marketting, but sneaking in false info or hiring people to trash someone else's product isn't marketting at all, it's basically assaulting someone's image. The end goal may be to inflate your own product, but a smear campaign doesn't attempt to discuss your product at all, it focuses all it's attention at making the competitor look as unappealing as possible.

Please show me one truely negative response from someone with handson experience, i havent seen anyone. Back on gamescom everyone without any exception where very possitive, this my kind sire isnt based only on my experience, but on dozens of experiences from both gamescom handson experiences, as the many blogs posted from the press beta testing. While there was some criticism from the press, their overall opinion was allways very enthousiastic and positive.

Sadly, under the new rules of the internet, it is considered marketing.

I'm not a sire You answered your own question by the way. There was some criticism. I happen to think that's healthy. I don't claim anywhere that there is some broad standing negative opinion in the press that is being outright ignored by the GW2 fans. However even if someone can watch the good reviews and not be as enthusiastic about it it doesn't mean they are a hater. Perhaps they are a fence sitter who is still as yet undecided. And negative backlash to any form of debate on the matter throws them off the other side. I think that's pretty silly but again just my opinion.
I have no problem being a fan of the game and at the same time being VERY concerned and critical about how the cash shop gems will affect player economy and what the effect of future changes will be when Arenanet tries to fix the economy. That I can't be sure yet is obvious, that is why I call it 'being concerned'. And I think it is very important to voice your concerns so that comes to Arenanet's attention before the game is released.
What doesn't help is that I'm allergic to yes-sayers. Putting your head into the sand and hope that everything will turn out allright is naieve. They bring out the worst fanaticism in me. I have more problems with yes-sayers then trolls. Yes-sayers always remind me of zealots who are spreading the word! hallelujah! UGH!. While trolls are most of the time just mis/uninformed players who are not capable of doing some research about a game.
II think some people just like to play devils advocate as well. Most avid MMORPG players are planning /or will pickup this game, the same ones who flame the fanboy posts on this site. You have to admit that some of the fanboy comments posted on the site tend to draw out the worst in people.
I have seen comments for GW2 that make even someone looking foward to the game kinda embarrased for the poster. This is what is drawing the negativity. If I said "X is going to redeifine the MMORPG genre" prior to release, without ever having seen or played it (or based on youtube vids) I think I'm probably going to draw a few negative posts as well. Regardless of the game.

If people were a bit more, aloof, for lack of a better word when it comes to MMOs, perhaps companies would work harder to get that dollar instead of knowing full well since its the next big thing people will buy it on that merit alone.
I wouldn't call this viral marketting, but more of a smear campaign tbh. Viral marketting is a method of creating buzz. What we have here is a board full of (mostly newer) posters who do nothing but bash the game all day.
And, for the hundredth time, saying something bad against a game is one thing (if it's valid). Broadly spreading false claims & information is something else entirely. A lot of what's being passed off on these boards as 'criticism' is missinformed flaming of this game.
For those that are legitimately interesting in this game, and are still caught up in all the flames, open your eyes a bit & do some research (it's really not that hard to find).
There's pleanty of posts that will point you to places like:
Accurate info on this game really isn't that tough to find. This is one of the reasons why it's all the more frustrating that people continue to make false claims against this game. And for what? Can you really think of another MMO that had this degree of attacks on it prior to launch? This game has repeatedly been attacked (primarily with false info) for almost 6 months straight now. Most of the threads have been locked, but it just doesn't seem to stop the tidal wave of negative thread posts.
It would be one thing if they were based off of accurate info we've seen on the game (like the comment of the world bosses not moving much), but instead we have thread after thread of 'gw2 is the worst game ever and here's why! No, I've never played it, but here are the facts!'
I can't think of any other game where that would be 'okay', but for some reasons GW2 is the favorite demon of the average forum poster on these boards. What's more is it's seaping into other games. Games that really shouldn't be giving a crap about this game to begin with. It's the type of reaction you'd expect from someone who's been personally wronged in a horrible way, and yet none of these people have actually played the game!
- What I want to know is, why are these threads (many of which contain obvious trolling, flaming) being allowed to go on for so long. The longer this goes on the more it seems like the rules of these forums are tipping in favor of the trolls. We (again for the 100th time) have valid threads discussing complaints, concerns, or wanted features for this game. And yet none of those are blowing up the forums. It's always the 'gw2 is the worste MMO ever made' threads that get perpetuated. I really don't see how this is magically 'okay' for this game, but not for any other.
The funny thing is, that statement works for both sides of the street.
That Guild Wars 2 login screen knocked up my wife. Must be the second coming!

I can understand that. However, looking at the genre as it is I do not think we can count on itto be "aloof" about anything anymore. GW2 is not going to be hurt by a positive or negative reaction. It seems to have a timing that is going to grab alot of folks (regardless of what they say on these forums) for the box cost. No monthly fee guaranteeing that even more. With everything it has going for it any press draws attention to its release and that is all they really need. The negativity is just backlash against an overly vocal, and someyimes naive group that have already decided this is going to be something it can never live up to.

This.
I've noticed myself starting to feel the same about it. I've been a fan of ANet since the earliest GW betas, but in no way do I feel like associating with this new hyper rosy-colored, activist GW2 fanboi crowd that can be found at the far end of the GW2 fan spectrum. Comments of those people start to grate more and more on my nerves. I see no problem with people being excited and enthusiastic for a game they're interested in, but some of the new hardcore GW2 fan crowd just remind me too much of those evangelist 'hallelujah, praise the lord' people in their extreme way of expressing their love of a game.
I've nothing against faith and beliefs people may have, but some of the more extreme versions of it I just find distasteful and disturbing. Same with this new GW2 fan movement, some of the more agressive activist ones that you can also see on these forums is just not something I feel akin to in my own ANet positivism.
Out of all the upcoming games i am by far more comfortable and excited with pre-purchasing GW2 as i like and trust anet to deliver the goods and i am the least comfortable with the idea of purchasing TSW at all from 2 companies i do not like or trust, everything else like tera, archage and others fall in between to the yet unknown territory..
While i tend to not trust or like fudgecom products and i especially dislike EA i still wouldnt want to discourage those that think TSW is the bomb from buying it, if it survives and thrives after a year i may get it myself but i would warn gamers that dont know that fudgecom and EA are both real true industry scumbags that will try and suck you in with doctored pics and video, lies, deception and mistruths and promises never delivered and they often leave their customers disappointed and feeling ripped off in the end..

So much this. In the end, that is also negative to the community and the genre as a whole. This thread is aptly named.

Lets hope GW2 meets your expectations, theres not a lot of companies out there who can rely on customer loyalty in this genre.

Nice little world you have created for your self though. "they hate anyone who speaks positively or like the game" LOL
Sounds reasonable on the surface, but when you dig down a little, that rationale holds no water. For instance, would you go to a sports event, say a hockey game, dress in the colors of the visiting team, cheer for them and dance when the home side loses, when you're not even a fan of the visitors? How about if you're not even a fan of hockey?
That's often the case with the so-called 'free speaking individuals' that haunt these boards. They don't even have a stake in what happens with the game because they won't be playing it. They are here for one reason only and that's to incite the community. Then they have the audacity to point fingers when the 'fanboys' lash out. Worse, they piss in the pool that everyone has to swim in, which sets up even the most honest of questions for attack by overly sensitive fans, thus worsening the so-called fan image.
Being critical of a game and expressing your views is one thing. I do it myself often. But I don't harp on those points in other game threads. I say my piece, sometimes very cordially, then I let it go. Often times I'll even try to say something positive before leaving, simply as a courtesy to the community that I'm sticking my nose into. Here, these 'honest critics' who are just 'speaking their mind', hammer on their points for days on end, almost without let up.
If you can't see this in motion, you don't want to see it.
"It is fanboys who have zero credibility because they are incapable to of having any opinions of their own."
actually being a fanboi IS an opinion of it's own. they like a game, i doubt they like ALLLLLL THE GAMES out there. they usually like one game, and haters call em fanbois
i could just take your statement and rephrase it:
It is haters who have zero credibility because they are incapable to of having any opinions of their own.
see what i did there? smart me
"I'll never grow up, never grow up, never grow up! Not me!"

The logic doesn't fit, or you're using your analogy wrongly. To use your own analogy as example: I can go to a soccer game of a club I like but be turned off on the hardcore crowd in their segment with many hooligans among them. Anybody who's aware of soccer hooligans knows the difference that there can be between ordinary club fans and the hardcore fan crowd especially in countries like the UK. Same with religion, a normal believer can still be repelled by the extremists and blinded zealots in his faith, like I'm guessing ordinary muslims can be repelled by the actions of religious muslim fanatics, or how some catholics can feel they've nothing in common with some evangelist movements or other more fanatical expressions of their faith.
There's annoying people who do nothing but campaigning and crusading on both sides of the fence, among fans and critics. As far as I've seen, it's no different for other MMO's on this site, but I've noticed that particularly a hard core of extreme GW2 fans, disgruntled sandbox fans and some people who're not playing MMO's atm at all, are the most vocal and onesided in their arguments.
Of course that's not all critics or fans, so let's not generalise either group for any game.
Fanboys and alike cannot think for themselves and can only follow others so this "negativism" you are talking about is simply free thinking individuals who are not afraid to speak up.
OMG! Yoda said I'm not a free thinker! And a coward to boot! Oh wait, nevermind, just some guy named Yamota, my bad. I should've known, Yoda would've said, "Fanboys think for themselves they can't."
Fanboys and alike cannot think for themselves and can only follow others so this "negativism" you are talking about is simply free thinking individuals who are not afraid to speak up.
Sorry you are dumb. It is negativism if the person wastes his energy on something he dislikes. It is not the same as criticism. Free thinking individuals? What the hell?

I'm not a sire You answered your own question by the way. There was some criticism. I happen to think that's healthy. I don't claim anywhere that there is some broad standing negative opinion in the press that is being outright ignored by the GW2 fans. However even if someone can watch the good reviews and not be as enthusiastic about it it doesn't mean they are a hater. Perhaps they are a fence sitter who is still as yet undecided. And negative backlash to any form of debate on the matter throws them off the other side. I think that's pretty silly but again just my opinion.

Re: SWTOR
"Remember, remember - Kakk says 'December.'"

Playing GW2..
So much this. In the end, that is also negative to the community and the genre as a whole. This thread is aptly named.

Lets hope GW2 meets your expectations, theres not a lot of companies out there who can rely on customer loyalty in this genre.
gw2 prepurchase sales will speak for themselves.
If you can't see this in motion, you don't want to see it.
errmmm...
Not me!"
Welcome to the world of free expression of ideas and opinion.
OMG! Yoda said I'm not a free thinker! And a coward to boot! Oh wait, nevermind, just some guy named Yamota, my bad. I should've known, Yoda would've said, "Fanboys think for themselves they can't."
Sorry you are dumb. It is negativism if the person wastes his energy on something he dislikes. It is not the same as criticism. Free thinking individuals? What the hell?
