The main reason it gets higher ranks is cause other games fluxuate above or below it which changes quite often depending on the month or the current trend. A lot of what has changed with the Korean gaming market is League of Legends which even pushed Aion down. I can say that a lot of people most likely moved to play LoL but TERA kept it's steady playerbase. But even so, when considering the cost of the game, a 2.5% market share isn't what I would call a success.

Yes I agree, note that not once did I say TERA was a success in Korea. I only stated and showed proof that TERA did not and is not a "failed" game as many people like to think.

Comparing  the initial costs from revenue and market shares when TERA first launched to today, will lead people to the conclusion it did not do so well. Yes this is true, TERA on so many levels was not deserving of and ready for release at that time for a sub based game, a year ago.

But with having that much time for updates / polishing / content, its possible that TERA will be a success for NA and EU. Which at this moment, only time will tell.

Inventory space won't cost much and the rest... you have 5 characters slots at start. You want more???

The keys are dropped in game too. Do your research better.

And just hope we don't get in TERA NA and EU the same P2W cash shop that just got introduced in Korea.

Or you didn't even know that TERA has a cash shop too?

    Mmmh. NO

You are just not really informed about it (or you just don't want to be informed about it).

But let's leave it at this cause it's not in topic.

Problem is that if you only have a single new feature.... sooner or later other titles will have it copied too. Dragon Nest and Vindictus already have action combat (arguably even better than Tera), Blade & Soul will have it. RaiderZ too (even more actiony and f2p).

Honestly Tera's future  doesn't look good.

It will be a nice niche title with a small but  loyal player population.

BTW this is bound to happen. Look at Rift... they had the rifts as the "new" thing and Tera copied it.

combat doesnt make the game there's alot of other features to MMOs

a good mmo will excell in all areas not just combat

example PSU has great combat but poor mmo systems

so i played other games such as WoW,SWTOR,aion,rift,ff11

Probably just me, but I don't like the graphics style, the huge swords and that asian feel of it. The combat looks fun but the setting, theme and graphics doesn't fit me.

Well, I think it does look better than AoC, so obviously it is a matter of taste.

Actually the graphics are quite different and hard to judge against each other since AOC is photo realistic and Tera is "asian" style. My personal pref is AOC but certainly nothing wrong with Tera's graphics

I just don't see this being in the top 5 this year. It has one gimick, a reactionary combat system.  It'll be stable, find a niche crowd, but the last game that had a one hit gimick (Rift), its still the same ole game with a differnet combat mod and grinding questing that throws the window out of logic and fun

um, what game have you played where if you fought the same but higher level mobs it would count toward your quests?

I've tried and played many of these games and I can't think of a one. Sorry but that's not really a great excuse. That you hate killing 10 of this and 10 of that is a much better reason on its own.

As far as the quests, i think some people are too hung up on those. In some ways this really is a Korean Grinder that isn't a korean grinder.

You can literally go out nad grind out mobs if yuo want and in many cases get almost as much as going out, killing 20 of something and going all the way back.

Just like Lineage 2 where grinding mobs "wasn't the game" the same can be seen in Tera.

The game, and why some are finding this game a draw, is about an open world and possbilities. For pvp servers it's about the open pvp, wars, alliances, etc. For pve servers it's about exploring, fighting monster hunter type monsters and just enjoying the world as it comes.

In the last beta I did quests in a group that sort of "just happened". I didn't care about the quests but did care about meeting someone who needed help, calling our guildmates and then completing our objectives. I haven't had so much fun in this way since Aion and definitly L2.

The quests are incidental even though they give xp. Not to say some won't like the story but its' the large world and a more old school feel that some players are graviting toward.

Sov I have noticed that in games like Vanguard and Ryzom you have tried to help people and I appreciate that and find that commendable and as such I want to say this:

Hey bud can you lend a brotha from anotha motha 50 big ones:) just kidding------can you?

BnS combat sucks so bad, i prefer freaken tab target over it. Basically you stand infront of the person and spam buttons, thats yet, its like playing DDR but only lot worse. The running is fun.

RaiderZ as of now is unpolished as hell, delay and lag and choppy frame work. No tot metion is a pure pve game hosted by one of the company well known for their horrible P2W cash shop.

Also the entire mmorpg has been copy and polish. If they can copy something and make it better all the more go for it.

Be honest, you haven't researched TERA at all, have you?  TERA and SWTOR both have quests.  That's about the only similarity in either game.

And if you honestly believe that how a game fares in the Asian market has any bearing on how it will do here...Aion says "Hi."

Yeah, I agree.  That's a matter of art style, and I generally prefer photo realistic to asian anime art style.  This is why my favorite looking game has always been LOTRO.  The guy I was responding to mentioned graphics, which I think is better in TERA, even if I prefer the AoC "art style."

i really dont think TERA will be any kind of hit. while its combat is an improvement over WoW's for example, the rest of the game (questing, pvp, class design, etc.) is mediocre if not subpar in some ways.

  • austriacusaustriacus Member UncommonPosts: 618

Sadly the game cannot be a hit, and thats because the majority of people who play subscription MMOs are a bunch of xenophobic kids.

I personally love the art style and find the game very good but it will follow Aions route in the west, 2-3 years after release it will become ftp and before that it would have had a niche audience of prob around 200-500k people.

Sad really, the game has a lot of potential.

  • PuremallacePuremallace Member Posts: 1,856

WoW fanbois will not like it so it will get labeled as a failure by all the tools playing MMO's currently. It is a pretty solid game and pvp'rs who have jobs will play it. Broke basement dwellers will be in that other pvp game coming out later this year.

Has nothing to do with Xenophobia, so dont make assertions you cant back up.  Some prefer Sci-Fi, some prefer Eastern, some prefer Comic style and others including me prefer Mideval High Fantasy.  Something more gritty, more realistic something silimar to Lord of the Rings or Advanced Dungeons & Dragons.  I dislike Final Fantasy and Phantasy Star style Asian art, not personal but personal prference.

Well that will be fine, is that not what we want our future MMOs to represent? Taking the best qualities of other MMOs and making it a part of a new / improved and innovative MMO.

Even if it may just be one aspect "combat," It's still a very important part of any MMO. What are you mostly doing in MMOs regardless of quests / Lore / end-game?? Yep its combat and TERAs sets it part from many other MMOs, with this we will see the trend of action-MMORPGs start to rise.

It all depends on what you are looking for. I can see someone who likes WoW but is bored with it liking TERA. The combat is completely different, you aren't required to do very many quests if any (main story quest is recommended), there is a lot of overworld group content and the graphics and animations are top notch.

EQ, EQ2, WoW, VG, Aion. These are the games I have played more than two months time. I could write a two page review on each and point out the ways I would change each to make it more enjoyable. I'm going to play TERA because it fits my list more than any title I see coming out.

Basic quests aside TERA has correctly build off of the game that have come before it and added their own features. They didn't replace one thing for another and yeah, it looks really nice and has the most engaging combat system of any AAA MMO out right now.

Just not worth my time anymore.

People that talk about TERA's combat being the only interesting thing about this game obviously haven't played it past the starter area.  To me, the combat is great, but the real thing that stands out in this gave is the world design.  To actually be a part of a world where you don't want to be bothered with questing because you are too busy exploring and killing makes it a breath of fresh air, IMO.

You don't need tons of innovation to have a solid game.  TERA's combat is innovative, but it also brings back some very well-needed features from past games.

if that actually happens, thats a great thing.

it will be great to have more than one MMOVW whose combat isn't built on fundamentally shitty concepts.

you WANT good features to spread.  you DON"T want it to be special to just one game.

Its all about the pvp, and this is to both pve and pvp server. When you pvp the game is like a completely different game in of it self. Yes PvE dungeons are challenging but when you PvP the game changes ^_^ Open world and guild war are massive fun, really does get a group of people together just very fun. And than you have DM and 5v5 and 10v10 and those are intense. Honestly i perfer 5v5 and 10v10s more, lot of team work and skill invovled where every player matters. Also my computer isn't great so rendering issue in massive battle sucks = Some one buy me a desk top pl0x

Nothing to back it up? ROFL how about the years and years i have been the victim of americans being xenophobic towards me when im playing, and how about all the hundreds of people that use the word "weaboo" for anything asian related.

Im sorry but you are so delusional its not even funny. The USA is a very xenophobic country and thats known by almost anyone outside of it. Its very hard to introduce a foreign culture into it, specially since a great deal of people worship their flag like a god and deem everything else inferior.

At least this is the image that the USA has shown to me and a lot of other foreigner gamers.

Listen dude.  believe what you will, I cant comment any further then that without going into bannable political discussions which I wont do.  For every single act of percieved Xenophobia or racist remark I can show you a thousand instances to refute it.  Just leave it at that.  I feel sorry you feel wrong but as the point of my post was to point out I dislike Asian art syle in all games and it has nothing to do with me hating Asian culture, I just prefer Mideval high fantasy PERIOD.
