I have a VERY bad case of altaholism. I make alts because I wonder if the grass is greener, I want to see a specific ability, or I just like how something looks.
Looking at the character builder here: http://gw2.luna-atra.fr/skills_tool/?lang=en and reading the massive posts in the stickies above, how the hell do you decide what class to play???
There is a SMALL chance I have eliminated Warrior and Guardian, and maybe ranger, but only maybe, but for the rest, my god, the possibilities and combos...
Someone needs to make a think like there use to be whre you answer a bunch of questions and then it recommends your class based on the answers.

Let's be honest, you'll end up playing them all.

First step is to eliminate melee classes since they usually just get kited in PVP games. Next step is to roll whatever does the most range damage with the most crowd control.

Since all classes can basically fullfill every role does your choice of class really matter?
Just pick one and roll with it. After 20 levels you don't like it, reroll.

Honestly? I was extremely conflicted and kept switching which class I was gonna play.. Until a guy on some forum mentionned that he wanted to make a group of female Norn Guardians role-playing as valkyries.
I'm a GIGANTIC fan of norse mythology and '' Valkyrie '' rang a bell in my head, I then decided to roll a guardian! Haven't switched class since then.
My names Nick and I'm an altoholic.
Probably will end up leveling 2 80's and the others will be insta pvp 80's.
How I came up with this is exactly what I did in GW1. Played monk and ranger to 20 and thru story then rest all pvp only!
Gunna go Mesmer first and then ranger or thief 2nd!
Considering all classes have range, I don't think that helps.
As for step number 2, are you predicting rangers and mesmers will faceroll in pvp?
All classes have long range, except for Guardians they have no long range weapons, only medium range and mellee

I have the same problem. So that's what I'm using BWE's for. Going to try each class out until at least level 10 - hopefully that will at least give me some indication of what to roll at launch. There again I'm very torn on race/class combos, but don't want to spoil the story of the Asura, Sylvari (those two not a problem on first BWE) , and Charr. I must stop myself from rolling a charr this weekend I must......goes off mumbling, wondering if Doc has any cure for GW2 obsession....
best bet is to figure out which you don't like and eliminate them.. THEN just see what you like over the weekend
Have to roll a Charr to try out the char creation...
*wink*
God I know right I am right there with you ALTOHOLIC
I don't know what i am talking about, so no idea. Mesmer looks good for small fights but I wonder if their tricks will stand up in the face of mass AOE attacks. Personally I will either go Mesmer or Necromancer...probably both. I have fond memories of the necro from GW1 where you could defend an objective from an entire enemy team with enough minions. We will have to see if the minion master is as fun in GW2.

best bet is to choose ranger or mage, they are imba and ez-mode in every game
its true you end up playing all tho evry class grant you unique elite skill wish you can get unique play depend your profetion,
mi personal class will be necro cause if you master necro it will be hard to kill even in 1v1 alwais think twice before atack 1 knowing they have doble life
I'm going to chose class by the way the armor looks on the race. Will only be rolling female avatars.
So for Charr....what looks good?
Norn or Human...mesmer and elementalist
Sylvari...not sure what their armor looks like but I'm thinking thief or ranger.
Asura...needs to be a guardian for sure!
im normally like:
Hi, im Archaegeo, its been 10 hours since my last new character. My sponsor told me to call him, but he was busy rerolling...
Sigh.
And I seriously do not think you can say anything is OP or imbal in this game, looking at the skillsets and choices. Now might you have the wrong skills loaded for the class you just ran into, sure, but still, looking at all the choices, wow.
And yeah, dont get me started on races, though i think charr is out.

I like to get really good at one class, can't really do that if im playing everything
"I am not a robot. I am a unicorn."
I'm quoting the above just because it's a similar process to how I decide on a class I'll play in a new MMO.
I do think a bit about what class will be more to my liking in terms of gameplay mechanics, but ultimately I always end up going with what to me would be a compelling or interesting character in RPG terms, and I pick the class based on that.
For this game, my gut reflex would be to go with Thief or Mesmer - though a Sylvari Necromancer would also be intriguing... but that's all prone to change on *actually trying the game*.
I think I have eliminated Guardian for first play through and maybe Engineer (flame thrower pahh) normally I would eliminate Warrior too but they just look like beasts.
It's all too perplexing.
But but...I dont want to spoil the game with the beta weekend, so I dont want to try the class Ill end up playing...
Oh who the hell am I kidding, I wont pick a class to stick with, sigh.

Oh, and of course there is the decisions about...
Well, I think I would like Mesmer better for PVE and Necro better for PVP, sigh. Its hopeless.

there's one thing to remember. When a game offers you a necro class, you ALWAYS HAVE TO pick that mkay?

lmao. That really made me laugh out loud
Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.
But dont the melee classes get range weapons too? Warriors have access to rifles and guardians have access to magic which can be ranged.
