Easy. You do what I am doing. Make one of each class. Use one as a story character, what you think is your favorite, and park the rest in WvW Eternal Battlegrounds at the start. Then you have instant action for all classes in world PvP and you can jump onto different ones based on your preference that day. Eventually all will be level 80 and all will be lovely.
I narrowed my classes down to warrior (which I ALWAYS play and was originally against, but access to all weapons and higher level skills looked great), guardian, and engineer.
Pretty much ruled out Guardian as its not the Paladin I thought it was (more defensive). Though I hate playing support I kind of fell in love with the engineer. So far I liked what I read about its breadth of skill and figured to learn them (well) early on to beat the masses.
Besides, its hard for me to pass up a flame thrower and bombs.
Race is more of an issue, because like others I dont want to 'ruin' the personal story by playing the same ones over and over and over during all these betas. Then when launch comes around Im bored with the content. Really leaning on Dynamic Events to make each beta experience different. We will see if they deliver.
I have a VERY bad case of altaholism. I make alts because I wonder if the grass is greener, I want to see a specific ability, or I just like how something looks.
Looking at the character builder here: http://gw2.luna-atra.fr/skills_tool/?lang=en and reading the massive posts in the stickies above, how the hell do you decide what class to play???
There is a SMALL chance I have eliminated Warrior and Guardian, and maybe ranger, but only maybe, but for the rest, my god, the possibilities and combos...
Someone needs to make a think like there use to be whre you answer a bunch of questions and then it recommends your class based on the answers.

Lol, you're not supposed to pick only one =P. This game is very alt-friendly.
When it comes to betas, I decide like this:
1) Which areas do I want to explore? This will determine which race I roll.
- Norn for Shiverpeaks (frozen tundra / foresty type zone)
- Human for Kryta (beautiful lush green forests, caves, & rivers. A lot of the videos we've seen have been from these areas)
- Charr for Old Ascalon (similar to kryta, but a bit more scarred / war torn. Has the marks of centuries of battles)
2) What classes look most interesting, what haven't I played yet?
- So far I've played the Warrior, Elementalist, & Mesmer. Love them all. Am curious about kits & pet mechanics, so I will be rolling an engineer / ranger alt for this first BWE.
3) How much of the game do I want to see?
- This one's super important, and kind of a tough call. Basically you have a choice between playing one character more extensively, giving you the ability to see more content, or try out a bunch of different characters (giving you an extensive experience for the starter areas). You could also choose to only focus on PvP, which I know quite a few people have said they're doing.
Anyway, dunno if that helps you widdle down your decision, but those are some ways in which I helped shorten my list for beta. There will be one of these each month, so keep that inmind as well. Since this is your first beta, it might be best to get a decent 'starter' experience, and then save the later betas for some of the later lvl stuff.
And I seriously do not think you can say anything is OP or imbal in this game
Because the game isn't finished being made yet. That won't stop some people from complaining, it hasn't so far.
As for how does one decide on a class? Honestly, I haven't yet, not 100%. I'd love to say I will play the Guardian right off the bat, but a lot of the professions look so tempting, the answer to your question would have to be: "very carefully".
First step is to eliminate melee classes since they usually just get kited in PVP games. Next step is to roll whatever does the most range damage with the most crowd control.
But dont the melee classes get range weapons too? Warriors have access to rifles and guardians have access to magic which can be ranged.
I think rogues and guardians can have up to 3 gap closers depending on their weapons and utility skills. Warriors can have up to 2 depending on their utility skills, but they can remove movement impairing effects every __ seconds and become immune to most kiting CC's, snares, and knockbacks every __ seconds. That is if they are speced a certain way though. The rogue can turn invisible and the other two have heavy armor.
If you have a class type you 'usually' play, one of the classes in GW2 will meet that demand. Elementalist - DPS, Guardian - Tank etc. If you don't 'feel' it after 15 or 20 levels, roll another.
You should play with whichever class you feel most comfortable with going into the game for the first time, i have played a ranger, engineer, warrior and elementalist and all of them are very fun and each powerful in their own way...

Please... stop. Just. stop.
Not only is this statement flawed on so many levels.. the OP doesn't seem like he needs more confusion in his life at this time.
best bet is to figure out which you don't like and eliminate them.. THEN just see what you like over the weekend
same plan here
Going to start with engineer /thief/ranger
The ones i prefer is memser/necro/warrior
I just love how we all think differently ranger will def. be my main, thief is on my no list and possibly war with mesmer but I will probably play necro and eng. Usually ppl are defined into roles and its so nice that in GW2 we can just pick the other stuff we like
Yeah, my concern with the mesmer is his illusions/clones seem to be a big part of his power, and while they might fool PvE, I have doubts they will fool PvP.
I.E. Kill the controller, ignore the pet, has always been the way of dealing with pet classes.

I think illusions will have a similar effect as feign death did for hunters in wow. While its full effect won't work on players, it will probably detarget them from your toon. In vids I saw attacking players had to tab target through illusions to get back on the actual mesemer.

I thoguht so too. However, a recent PCGamer previewer mentioned Mesmers kicked his butt in pvp because he had a hard time figuring out whome to attack. And some of the videos I've seen seem to make it difficult to tell. Might you, you have to be careful about which clones you use, and how YOU act while they are up. If three clones pop out, all firing gratsword beams, and you have a pistol on and keep dodge roling, not gonna take long to figure out.
Watch videos from beta and chose what playing-style you like, because there are big differences between the classes.
Think about the following things:
-Elementalists do not change the weapon during combat they change their acumen through de F1-F4 keys. Every acumen has a certain effect. Looks to me like the class, that needs the most skill.
-Rangers use the F1-F4 keys for their pet. However, the pets have been very buggy so far. Kiting will not be as easy as in other games. I suppose that josting could be very important.
-Mesmer has a lot of tricks, but is very weak. F1-F4 are for his illusions. What I have seen so far, Mesmer looks like a very fun class, especially in pvp.
-I still have no idea, how arena.net wants you to play a rouge. Totalbiscuit was very disappointed with his rouge during a dungeon run. He couldn't melee because he died quickly, but relying on his pistols was not satisfying. The rouge has not a stealth-ability like in other MMOs. He can only stealth for a few seconds during battle. Very important is his ability to steal an ability from his enemy, but I could not get an idea from the videos, how this exactly works.
-I like the look of the necromancer a lot. Everything he does looks so creepy. He can survive in battle for a long time and is all about conditions. The guy from Yocast prefered to run around with all possible minions. It looked a little bit crazy to me. However, if I understand it correctly, direct damage is not his best quality. In some pvp-videos the necro really kicked ass.
-The quardian is clearly designed more towards support. I think he looks great and I like this class. But I have not seen a pvp-video where he really shined yet.
-The warrior seems to be a lot of fun and was the favorite class of many beta-testers. I forgot who it was, but one guy said that warriors are op in pvp, another guy stated the complete opposite.
-The engineer seems to be a little tricky, because of his turrets and all the different kinds of kits. I mean, if you just want to kill and kite a little bit, better chose the ranger. If you like to have a lot of possible skills for any situation, but not like the mesmer, chose the engineer.
Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don't need.
I saw one PvP video where a bunch of warriors were doing a instance pvp. They may not be op, but maybe they require less thought and can be facemashed with more success early on.

LOL, images of Wii controllers and TV's just flashed through my head.

Maybe thats a good plan, since I know I dont want to be a Charr long term, I should try Charr for the beta weekend.
And then one of the classes im leaning away from
But what if that makes me dislike the game. sigh. its hopeless

I really really want to play Thief so bad! All of those different stealth moves look so fun.
But I will be trying as many classes as I can this weekend before I make any sorta of final decision for my main class.

They are all good classes to play, not many mmos can say they have all good classes. Going to roll them all in beta and at release!
Grim Dawn, the next great action rpg!

I'll help you OP.
For the upcoming beta you will play a necromancer.
Glad i could help. Your Welcome.

Oh I fully understand the triad is gone, thankfully.
So he didnt confuse me that way, maybe others.
But yeah, im still confused, but thats a normal state of affairs for a true altaholic.

I'd say weigh the pros and cons of each. For instance, based on what I know of Mesmer (The class I personally am looking most forward to)
Pros:
-Signifigant buffs/debuffs
-Tons of ways to mess with players head's in pvp
-AoE stealth for the party.
-Mix of melee and ranged gameplay
-Look like a challenge to play
Cons
-Look like a challenge to play (yes this is in both columns, for a good reason)
-Squishy
-Melee skills look weaker than I'd like
-Clone mechanic may not work well in pvp depending on its AI.
-Everything is pink.

I seem to remember reading somewhere you get 5 character slots at launch? I hope so because my 5 choices will be.
Charr/Thief
Norn/Guardian
Human/Necromancer
Sylvari/Elementalist
Asura/Engineer
